Hi, wild horse photographer here. Wild horses herds are split up into bands. A colt gets kicked out of the band as soon as they're sexually mature. The lead stallion, usually the sire of all foals in a band, will kick them out, and this process can be very brutal if the colt doesn't get the point.. You will often see "bachelor bands" in the wild, small groups of young males that aren't established enough to lead their own band. When a male becomes brave enough, they will branch out on their own and try to steal mares from a stallion. It's very complex. I have seen yearling fillies nursing on their mom while she has a newborn foal at her side. But for the most part, mama will kick them off permanently around a year old. Weaning is very dependent on available food for adult horses.
I recently saw a show on TV where a male challenged his own sire for the harem and got his butt whooped but it was fascinating to watch as well as brutal.

I recently got a chance to photograph wild horses and it was incredible! The herd dynamics are very interesting to observe. I got a shot of a large “baby” probably a yearling nursing 😂 Every horse had lots of scars though, from their fights to establish pecking order. Especially the stallions.
I'm like Abigail when it comes to hunting, as long as it is all eaten and, have no problem with it, but I couldn't do it myself I think. My dad grew up on a farm and he had no issue separating the two.

I'm an older woman and am a huge animal lover. My father grew up on a farm in the 20's and 30's and shared life on a farm. Every thing you talk about is the honest truth regarding animal behavor, the growing spurts, everything is right one. I don't think really understand what it takes to do what you are doing so successfully. Most people can't take of a dog or cat, let alone large breed animals. For someone your age with the knowledge you have, I woyld trust you with one of my animals. Your young, beautiful, smart and successful. Haters are just going to be jealous, let them go. You do you, it has worked so far!!
As an older woman myself , totally agree! We used to show and breed and raise farm animals , back in the day , and I didn’t know what all Katie knows! She is so well spoken and eloquent imo !
I was shocked with some comments I saw on other social media and wondered if you knew what some are saying about Stevie. This broke my heart, I don’t know her, but I just don’t understand why people would be so hateful about an innocent animal who is growing and maturing and training. I am glad you have thick skin. I will never understand why people say mean and horrible things about someone or something.

RS Lucky Seven? I could see him as a therapy animal - saw a video a few years ago with an adult horse (I think a stallion) that makes the rounds at nursing homes and the like. They let him choose the rooms he wants to visit. It was amazing to see the patients faces light up when they get to pet a horse! Seven, likely to be smaller and certainly identifies as a human, would make a great therapy animal.
Katie, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says. Keen on being you. As for your size? That's just more for your hubby to love. It doesn't matter. Just love yourself. Many of us love you for sharing your life. And I was an idiot for waiting to long to subscribe! I love all yhe extras that come with it

Human women can also give birth alone, out in the wilderness, but we really encourage them not to - for the same reasons that we help our pets/livestock.
Katie please do a children's book about the babies and mini's. I think it would be awesome if it was a book that babies could just listen to and see the pictures of them. My Ggrandson loves horses and especially the babies.
It's all good! I'm a Slytherin. Slytherins are resourceful and have very high standards. Ravenclaw is highly intellectual. Gryffindors are brave and adventurous. Hufflepuffs are the ones who bake cookies for you when you are having a bad day. And they are very hardworking.

I think you are lovely inside and out, never let the hate into your heart because the hateful don't deserve to be there.
This was such a great conversation in terms of wild vs "domestic". And I think what so many people don't seem to "click" about is that this is an investment. Yes Katie will step in, as she deems necessary, during foaling etc, and so many people pipe up with negative opinions, the whole "but in the wild blah blah blah...." but not only does she a) have a heart but b) is also PROTECTING HER INVESTMENT. The amount of time and money that goes in to every single aspect of breeding animals you HAVE to consider it as an aspect. Love your work Katie. xx❤

Thank you for talking about wildlife management. Many non hunters I have spoken to have no idea that the state manages the hunting. Or that many more animals would starve, be hit by automobiles,etc if they were not legally hunted. Thanks again
I have hunters in family. It's a good source of food when getting animals in wild vs animals on certain farms. I know a lot of people are like why and how cruel, but when deer population gets out of control it doesn't help with forest growth and tooany deer going to people's houses. I think hunting is not cruel if done right and I love how Katie and her group are caring and conscience of animals.

I laughed at your lizard comment. I'm a reptile, amphibian and invertebrate zookeeper and they are all animals! There are speciea of lizards and snakes that actually do "live birth" which is called ovoviviparous. BTW I'm a Hufflepuff. I always love these videos and learn so much!
