    Great informative video Joe. I was researching the Canopy board game bag that has an optional Ripstop nylon cover and you were the first result. Coincidentally you've got a nice collection of games, Cyclades is great!

    Like someone else said, thanks for answering questions I didn't know I had :o) I've worked with this stuff for years, sewn up packs and tarps but didn't know the history about it, or what some of the terms were. good to hear about it. Thanks.

    Thanks for the informative video. Why a polyester thread and not a nylon thread? I'm replacing a bug net sewn into my hammock and bought 0.9 oz ripstop no-see-um material (hasn't arrived yet) to replace the torn 15d material. Hopefully it won't significantly reduce visibility and air flow

    • @BackcountryBanter

      Polyester thread will hold up much better to moisture because it tends to dry faster. It is also a little more UV resistant than Nylon. Best of luck with your modification!

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  10 лет назад

      I do, eventually... The job in Maine kind of delayed it and then winter happened, so I can't really do the series until the leaves are out again. But then I'll be on the trail again.

    What size needles do you use for sewing purposes?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  6 лет назад

      For lightweight fabrics like most ripstop you need a lightweight needle. Especially with down gear, you want to make sure you are making as small a hole as possible, so that your down has less chance to escape. I use size #9 or #10 needles for most of my gear.

    is Oxford Nylon one of ripstop nylon family?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  10 лет назад +1

      I've never worked with oxford nylon but I do know that it is just like a really thick (high denier) taffeta. This means it does not have the ripstop grid, but it is similar to ripstop. It is very heavy but tough material.

      oxford nylon is different from ripstop nylon. oxford nylon sometimes plain weave, but ripstop nylon sometimes grid pattern or other.

    g/m2? I think.28 grams for a 30x30 square would be a bit too he

    • @BAK87
      @BAK87 9 лет назад

      1 yard = 0.91 meter. So 1.1 oz square yard = 37 grams square meter.

    water resistance????

  • @harrisb43
    @harrisb43 5 лет назад

    For correct pronounciation of "taffeta", ask your Grandmother. Really!
    Video very informative. 10+ minutes of hands and forearms: hmm... Beats a talking head, though. I didn't see what prompted the comment about stabilizing the camera, but it sure is stable now. LOL
    One thing to be aware of if making trail clothing with ripstop, flying embers, even tiny ones, will eat it up. You end up with little holes with black cauterized edges. Stay back from the fire, especially in the wind. (Writing from Newfoundland, I hear there are places with no wind. Baseless rumors!)
    Thanks. Looking forward to more.
