    Great fun watching your Rocket on the move today Oscar. Four coaches hauled up the incline with ease. From what I've watched online the new Centenary version has less pulling power. A superb model by Tri-ang that works as it should after more than half a century. Best regards to you

    The "weathered" look of the Rocket looks quite good. :) I do understand how delicate it must feel. If I recall it was pretty delicate from new. Almost 60 years later it would be very delicate.

    Such a relaxing and calming video to watch this morning, a nostalgic look back at the original “Rocket and carriages” from 60s. Such a fragile model to service and put back together but when travelling around the railway what a view. Not sure about the new one, thick it’s actually more delicate.. I don’t think you should ever refer to Stephenson’s Rocket as a Novelty! That model is six months younger than me and still performing brilliantly. As said already you have to love Triang. From the Rocket to EM2 overheads, the Blue Caley Single to the Blue Pullman. Must get my super 4 layout out and get my favourite if all time the Transcontinental pacific, out for a run.

  • @muir8009
    @muir8009 2 года назад +4

    Magnificent example. What a wonderful model.
    Wasn't triang at the time almost enigmatic. You couldn't really have a loco stud for even a garden variety GWR branchline, however you could run stephenson's rocket next to the latest blue Pullman. But that's all part of the triang charm really.

    • @jeffreymcneal1507
      @jeffreymcneal1507 2 года назад

      It was a horrid model, sorry to disagree. As Oscar explains it perfectly: it was/is a novelty. (The new Hornby HO version is a jewel).

    • @muir8009
      @muir8009 2 года назад

      @@jeffreymcneal1507 was it horrid though? The latest hornby has had the backing of half a century of technological development behind it. The triang model is instantly recognizable, it ran, and was available in its thousands anywhere at an affordable price, previous models of rocket tending to be very expensive and exclusive.
      With technological hindsight it is horrid, in 1962 it was a bit of a plastic miracle. And not a particularly good seller, for exactly that reason: it was cute, a novelty, and most children really wanted the blue Pullman.
      I do agree with you funnily enough from a modern viewpoint, but I think that we of today should really be looking at a model with how it was viewed at the time.
      The triang rocket was praised, like the brush A1A-A1A. The dublo co-bo was considered a very disappointing model at the time, its ringfield not withstanding.
      With that in mind should we be justified in determining what should be considered a horrid model? I think really it should be judged by aspect of contemporary availability of like models, with triangs rocket there was of course the trix Adler, better or worse?
      One could pertain the same view towards say, the XK120 or its track racing rival the hornet, both horrid by today's standards, but absolute world beaters for their time, even an early e-type, but all revered by enthusiasts today :)

    One of my favorite locomotives, and you are absolutely correct, there is always something ready to go wrong with this item. I obtained a set, scarcely used, and ran it for about seven hours at a train show. The brushes wore out quickly, and attempt to repair it came to not. An interesting design, poorly constructed. Some said that it was actually Sn3, not OO in scale.
    As many know, Hornby released a a new tooled HO version, which I got as fast as I could pull out my wallet. Unlike the Triang junk, it is a jewel, and has power pick ups from locomotive through the tender, thus it runs at a slow sweet speed and walks effortlessly through turnouts.
    In any event, another superb video, and "novelty" is precisely the correct word to identify this unit.

    Hello Oscar, I really have fun Sunday mornings comparing my versions to yours. Your Rocket model certainly runs much better than mine. When I got mine it was a non runner and what I found was what you mentioned about a split in the brush holding piece. Mine was bad enough that the brush had pushed out and twisted sideways. A very delicate plastic welding with a soldering iron was required to repair it. Other differences include a yellow firebox and black banding on the water barrel in the tender. I only have one coach, Despatch and it is missing one buffer and that same step is gone too. It also has a small chip in the luggage rack on the roof. These models have been shelf display only for many years.
    It amazed me to see yours pulling four coaches on the flat and I could hardly believe that you would even attempt the elevated section and then to do a standing start with minimal wheel slip was incredible.
    Thank you again for a great start to my Sunday. Regards, David.

    Hi Oscar. Probably the only way to get it running better over the points would be to put pick-ups on the tender. A bit of a fiddly job, But it can be done. What is really impressive was that they managed to get a X03 type motor in it. Again a great video.

    Thanks Oscar. for showing the Rocket coping with system six track
    With the contemporary Dean Single and Caledonian Single Triang also had the trailing wheels make use of magnadhesion to assist with electrical pickup.
    Seems to be needed even more with the Rocket but not designed in for some reason.
    Very early TV news coverage in Australia covering Toy Fair news had Triang solve this problem by running it flat out as I recall. As was lots of Triang usage at the time .
    With the Rocket featured in the edition nine catalogue not long before and admired by me, the TV coverage was firmly etched into my mind.
    As was an early seventies Faraday lecture on TV using a Rocket model to demonstrate an electronic principle. However what was the biggest memory with this was the fact that the Triang Rocket failed to move at all. Most disapointing.

    Oh, the irony of describing Rocket as a "Novelty". On a different note, the paperwork that came with her shows how manufacturers' attitude to supplying spares has completely changed: you get an exploded diagram with all the part numbers listed, whereas these days if a small part detaches from your £200 loco and gets lost, the standard answer seems to be, "Sorry we don't carry that part as a spare". I'm speaking from experience.

    Hi Oscar,
    What a delight that was, such a delicate model as you say and deserving of some TLC. The whole thing reminds me of the film the Titfield Thunderbolt. I don't suppose there are many examples of the original model surviving today in pristine condition, given the afore mentioned delicacy.

    Hi Oscar. I have a spare triang rocket tender happy to swap for a coach if anyone interested.
    Apparently these coaches are all based on the 1930s replica of what people THOUGHT the original coaches were, not necessarily true to life as it was pre camera era. That holds true for the yellow too.
    I have the late 70s hornby version. Very similar but silver seal wheels help with pick up. However it seems the trailing wheels are always the culprits for poor running as they don't seem to conduct to the chassis reliably. I've fitted a weight under the chassis but the pick up is still unreliable. Yours has benefit of the magnehesion being steel track. My suggestion is to ensure the axles have thin oil applied because if its anything like the ringfield chassis picking up through the diecast, keeping that bearing point lubricated helps a lot with connectivity.
    Thanks for the gift you sent, hope you enjoy the zero one parts.

      @oscarpaisley  2 года назад

      You're welcome, thanks again for watching and the information. Great to hear you have the 70s version with a silver seal type wheels. I think you're right about those rear axle pick ups due to the lightness of the model they tend to float in the bearing and don't keep continuous contact.

      Good afternoon Roy thanks again for watching, it's such a lovely item and terrific bit of design for it age. It does smoke on the Rolling Road quite freely and it will smoke on the rails but has to be run rather quickly. I suppose on a white/light background any smoke it dose produce doesn't show at all, but against a dark background you would see smoke much more quickly at lower speeds, it certainly has a great smell about it when it's running, all great fun.
