Microsoft should focus a little more on this issue. Luckily people started noticing this and thanks to that there are now several improvements to insider builds, like the redesigned notepad or updated volume flyout, although it would have been better not to rush the launch and ship the os when it is really ready.
Since Windows 8 (a decade) they want to modernize the UI but the only thing they have achieved is more and more inconsistency in each new system and duplicate apps. It's disappointing to see basic parts of the system that don't respect the dark mode or not being updated since Vista :(

  • @onelazynoob15
    @onelazynoob15 2 года назад +270

I think code reuse is ultimately fine if it leads to a better experience and allows devs to fix and update core systems more heavily, but from my experience Microsoft isn't very interested in doing that either. They very much want to repaint over everything and act like it's brand new while only tweaking a few things in the background. I feel like when it comes to UI stuff in particular is just that Microsoft has never really been a forward facing company and doesn't really plan for the future. So many default apps are written in such a way that they handle their own look and feel independently, rather than using a core theme engine. This is also why Windows doesn't really support themes in any meaningful way. Unlike linux apps that either utilize gtk, kvantum, or libadwaita and can be themed at a system level. But Microsoft doesn't seem interested in going back and refactoring their code base, (probably because it would possibly break backwards compatibility or just be too expensive to actually do at this point), while continually applying more and more coats of paint with every release. This is a problem that is only going to get more and more difficult as it's ignored.

did you deadass just say that libadwaita can be "themed at a system level"

Prior to 8, I believe Microsoft used the approach where they'd add onto or change existing windows features. Meaning that they'd either completely rework something (windows update) or they'll update (control panel).
After Windows 8 however. They essentially started to become lazy. Instead of updating features of Windows so things stay consistent. They started essentially layering new features ontop of Windows. A few of those Windows 7 remnants can be found as far back as Windows NT, but since MS use to update the grathics system wide back in the day. It was far less noticeable.

There are some stuff in this video that either have already been fixed or have a fix coming :
    - 1:20 The calculator did get updated to match Windows 11's design. I don't know why Windows 11 comes with the old calculator pre-installed but it should get updated to the new version automatically shortly after you install W11.
    - 2:31 That flyout has been redesigned for the upcoming 22H2 update. It should have been redesigned way earlier but at least they have worked on it. Can't say the same for the Wi-Fi flyout though
    - 5:30 Task Manager has an updated version coming too with dark theme support, Mica elements, the accent color being used instead of orange and layout changes.
    - 6:02 Same goes for the volume and brightness flyouts; their design and even position have been changed.
    - 6:35 They updated the design of this dialog but scrapped the redesign for the time being, apparently due to the feedback saying the updated dialog was slow or buggy
    - 8:06 This has been changed too. The new animation is kinda similar to the old one but also quite different
    - 12:31 MS Paint has been updated and the updated version is available to everyone already. It's functionally the same program but its design is quite different and Microsoft has promised to update it further to add stuff like dark theme support
Windows 11 was released in a pretty dumb state but at least Microsoft is actually working on fixing some inconsistencies this time around instead of completely ignoring most of them like they did back in the Windows 10 days

Everybody who took even a brief look at Windows source code (which is publicly available since 2004) knows that all Windows versions share a common source code, with new features just added to that already existing code. It isn't news, at all.
Windows sources are full of directives like #ifdef WINNT, that separate parts those are specifically for NT-based systems (NT, 2000, XP and all later versions) and those are specifically for 9x (95/98/ME).
The main difference between 9x and NT is char type: ANSI for 9x, UNICODE for NT.
But even without source code, it's pretty obvious that all Win versions have a lot in common, like seriously.
Same file and catalog structure, same dialog window all over GUI, same tiny little things of behaviour, same registry with a small set of keys unique for 9x against NT, and even smaller set for versions inside two major branches.

In my opinion Windows 7 was like a nice and polished house with all the tools you need organized very well. Newer versions are like if someone went to that house, took half of the tools and threw them in a giant pile in the corner of the basement, because they want the house to look "clean". And then they lock the door to those tools and buy shitty replacements for *some* of those tools. And then they rip out and burn every curtain, table cloth or anything that looks nice to make it more "minimalistic".

What most people are glossing over is that they never threw the old tools away when they could have. Think about how much worse it would be if they had, and any other company would have thrown away the tools. Might have to make a video about that, it's frustrating how one sided some of these conversations can get. The irony is that if they had done as many want them to do, Windows would have been truly ruined. I know that there have been times where you've been thankful to have the old control panel (especially if you ever used Windows 8), come on now. The irony is that you're giving them way too much credit. We need the backcompat because Microsoft takes an entire decade to get new UX correct. ☺

They themselves have said that Windows has become just a tool to enforce subscriptions, data collection and ads on their users, like mandatory Microsoft account, telemetry that you can't disable, ads on folders, Candy Crush, Edge being default even if you don't want it, XBOX Game Pass, OneDrive, Microsoft Office... the list goes on. Why would they waste their resources on making a good operating system, if they'll use it only to get people to pay for their stuff?

It's been this way the whole time. Yes, it's more obvious in Windows 11 (especially since Winver reports it as Windows NT 10.0 still, that's the killer.) But from the things you've shown in the video, then Windows 11 is just Windows NT 4.0 with a prettier UI. It's also XP and Vista and 7 and 8 and 8.1. The Windows 7 Basic theme still exists in 11, as well as the Windows Classic theme. And also Aero Lite from Windows 8. Guess Microsoft is just finally seeing the effects of having layered on top of an OS since 1996...

    • @cacodemon345

@@cacodemon345 At least Microsoft actually tried to make the layer system work up until Windows 7 by having many things stay the same internally, just richer and richer in functionality (you know what I mean right?)
Then they started with that UWP and web integration stuff, and everything just went downhill
Then the lazy layering started, with UI elements from Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7/Vista, Windows XP and freaking *_WINDOWS 3.1_* in Windows 11
Hell, even Windows 98 was different enough from 95 to be considered a new OS
Microsoft never tries these days, instead of rebuilding the weak, unstable foundation, (as Enderman said) sanding down the rust, cleaning every stain, polishing everything properly and *_THEN_* adding a fresh new coat of paint they just throw away the sandpaper and turn over the bucket of paint and splatter that brand new UI paint all over a small area of a giant, largely neglected OS

Why is it the general consumer's problem? @@snil4 Because that would not be financially viable. There's no company that is your friend, and there's no company, (especially a company that is traded on a stock market) that cares about consumers. Companies care about money.
But let's say that Microsoft have 2 separate versions of full-fledged Windows, one for consumers, and one for businesses.
There are two problems with that.
First one is: one Windows makes a lot more money than the other one, because businesses often pay more, or even pay, for keeping older software alive.
The second one is: why would any company keep two very similar products that are not sharing a lot of codebase? And how could those two versions of Windows share a lot of codebase if you're going to throw away half that is there for backwards compatibility, and the other half you're going to replace with shiny new things?
You could argue “then why there's Windows 10 and Windows 11 at the same time?” but the situation there is slightly different.
First of all, Windows 10 is phased out, second of all, Windows 10 and 11 are sharing a lot of the code, so both teams aren't wasting resources just to make the same thing twice.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

I mean, that was their plan originally. Not sure what prompted them to release 11 at all. Maybe they thought we'd be accepting of their changes if they didn't just force them as an update but instead released them as a new OS revision? The problem with that is that by making it a new version of Windows, they _greatly_ raised the expectations for it to be of quality, which they weren't expecting.

    • @iClone101

@@invalid_user_handle It has to do with a certain company with their brand new shiny CPU design wanting a new OS built to maximize its capabilities. And of course with their CPU whitelist, a good portion of PC users simply can't get Windows 11, and when the time comes when Microsoft gives Windows 10 the axe, those who can't update will simply continue to use their outdated and "vulnerable" OS. It's exactly what happened with XP, with the main reason for its decrease in usage being that people just finally got new computers.

this video perfectly showcases one of my biggest complaints with modern windows, and one of the biggest reasons why i made the switch to linux a few months ago. ever since windows 8, it feels like microsoft has just been slapping more and more things onto windows 7 and calling it a day (granted, windows 7 is possibly my favorite os of all time but i dont like the things theyve been slapping onto it). they were already doing this to a degree before win7, but i think the switch in aesthetic from aero to metro and the introduction of uwp and other tablet-friendly features made it significantly more noticeable since there was now a much bigger contrast between the legacy stuff and the new stuff. windows 11 feels like a weird mishmash of features from all the last windows versions since 7. there is no consistency. i dont think i need to point out any examples, just watch the video, but it just feels lazy and unpolished. i cannot believe that control panel still needs to exist after 10 YEARS of trying to phase it out because there are just still some things you cant do in settings, and thats just the biggest example. i find it hilarious that one of the biggest companies in the world known primarily for their operating system that is used on billions of computers cannot develop a more consistent os than a bunch of random open source developers that usually work for no pay developing programs for an os with countless different distributions and only a 2% desktop marketshare. seriously, on linux theres pretty much only gtk and qt apps, and both can be themed extensively, including to look almost identical to each other. you can barely even theme windows anymore at all. i hope microsoft completely overhauls windows one day, but it seems like theyre either too low on manpower or too lazy to be bothered
