- Hi Guys, this summer my mother taught me how to make Kajal/ Kohl like the old traditional way. It was fascinating to see how it is done!
You will need:
•A bell metal plate ( It is a form of bronze with a higher tin content) also known as Kansa plate with upward edges (Kansa is considered to be the healing metal of Ayurveda)
• Container
•Pure almond oil
•Cotton ( used to light clay Diya)
•Mustard oil (Sarso ka tel )
•Spoon
•Pestle & Mortar (for crushing the almonds)
•Matchstick or Lighter
•Crush 5 almonds using pestle and mortar, Make a cotton pad as shown in the video and put the crushed almonds
•Add 2 spoons of Carom (Ajwain) and close the cotton pad. Fill mustard oil in the clay diya to 1/4th capacity.
•Transfer the cotton roll to the clay diya to immerse in the mustard oil, Once it all soaked in add more oil to the clay diya and light it.
•Use three, pillar-shaped containers to support the bell metal plate on top of the diya.
•The plate should be high enough to not completely put off the diya light and it should be close enough for the diya fire to deposit the black ink. you can see the fire lapping at the Kansa plate making it black.
•Wait until the entire mustard oil is exhausted. The black ash collected is the kajal/kohl. Collect it using a spoon and keep it in a small box.
Take a small amount almond oil and mix it into the collected black powder. Store in a cool place.
•You can use the powder for eyeshadow it will prevent the kajal from smudging. Make sure you keep it in a pan so that it is easy to take the product using a flat brush.

Hello everyone!
I hope you and your family are keeping healthy and staying safe. I'm currently working on my graduation project where I'm trying to understand the relationship between beauty and personal grooming. I would love to hear your thoughts on the same!
I'd really appreciate it if you'd take five minutes of your time to fill in this quick survey.

Ummm that's richer and more saturated black than many in a $65 high-end American makeup palette. And this video was more relaxing than I expected haha. So gorgeous and I feel so honored to know this beauty in another culture.
doesnt look as pigmented tho
@@addyphoenix2655 try making it, it's more pigmented than any label you'll find, plus it takes an army of make up remover bottles to remove, so use coconut oil for wiping it off.

My mom used to tell me the stories of making the kajal from scratch and by hand nd how natural ingredients they add to make them .. 😍😍 soo lovely to watch this
I’ve been making my kajal like this for over two years after watching this video. Better than any store bought one I’ve ever tried
Do you collect also what's in the lamp, or only what's on the metal plate ? ☺️
The scraping of the Kajal powder off the plate was so so so satisfying. Wish that part was longer. Anyway, love the video. 🙏🙈😋
It was so elegantly done
Never in a million years would I have guessed this is how it's made. Wow!!!
I never knew kajal was made this way. It is actually very beautiful like art to me. Thank you ladies. I was looking for a natural root touch up recipe and another channel made one with activated charcoal, kajal, beeswax and coconut oil. I was wondering how I could make the kajal.
the best part is that, this kajal has goodness of almond (vitamin E) and ajwain (carom)(for cleaning eyes ) which not only makes you look pretty but takes care for your beautiful eyes ... traditional is best.
Which oil used in this process?
But wouldn't the heat kill those nutrients?
@@shaziajamal9961 Almond oil prefered. You can use any other old that is skin friendly like coconut, til, olive etc.
Such an extraordinary authentic process. Power of tradition. Greetings from Russia!
I was taught by my mom to make it by taking a whole almond, dipping it into ghee(use a needle to hold it), then holding it over a ghee fire (cotton wick) until it is charcoal. Then strain it thru a very fine cloth and use with castor oil. Didn't know there were so many ways to make it! Interesting!
Thank you!

My grandmother used to make home made kajal / kan mai in tamil since when I was a kid. It has a wonderful cooling effect for ur eyes.
Now it has been taken to the next gen too
She made this for her great grandchildren too. Our culture follows using this kan mai for a new born .
Trust me my 6 month old has never cried out of irritation upon using this home made kajal/ kan mai.
Hi there!!! Is this the same Kajal making technique???? If not then please share your grandmother's Kajal making technique too.
Any recommendation for eyesight... Is this d same method used for ages or any other way is followed?
Hey pls share the proceduce how ur grandmother maked
The South Indian way of making homemade Kajal is as follows:
Make a fine paste of sandalwood by rubbing the pure wood on a flat soft stone mortar & a fine paste of Hirda & both to be mixed well & applied on the bottom of a clay pot.
The wick is made out of a cotten cloth 6"×6" & is soaked in the juice of Bringiraj plant leaves & dried in sunlight- repeat for for 5days
Keep it on a mud Diya. Caster Oil is used to lit the wick & the pot with the above paste with some support to allow air.
The black soot formed is then mixed with castor oil & stored in a silver container for use.
Sandal / Hirda / Castor oil will give cooling effect to the eyes & Bringiraj will improve the eye sight
What is hirda??
@@Yuri.b2 It is a nut. It is the Hindi name & in Tamil, it is called as Kadukkai. If you type Hirda & make a Google search, will show the image of the nut. Also will show its botanical name.

I'm from a poor family, so when I was a teen, I didn't have money to buy make-up. So I used to use coal waste - which is called "gayettes" in my country (Belgium) - I collected on old mines sites, burned them and crush them in olive oil. It was my eyeliner and my mascara during all my teenagehood and my college studies.
That was fascinating, thank you for sharing part of your culture.
Also the jeweled boxes that you put it in after are so beautiful. 💖

It's an age long culture. It reminds me of my childhood when my aunt used to make this.. it's nostalgic
Representation is really good.
My mom always make kajal using this method on every diwali using diyas and apply on my eyes since childhood so that it can protect my eyes. After fireworks, mom applied kajal on eyes before sleeping. She used to tell the reason that it will protect our eyes from that light which we saw during fireworks outside and clean our eyes.

I guess the art of making and storing kajal varies a little by region in India, but the concept is the same. My grandmoms - dadi and nani - used to make kajal for us with home made ghee, in a clean clay diya and collect the soot in beautiful artistically engraved and ornate brass kajal daanis for application. The whole concept of kajal making is so holistic and artistic.
In my house my grandmother and my mother also made Kajal every Diwali and we used for the whole year. I will try to make this Kajal one of these days.

it improves eyesight...cleanses thoroughly...we use castor oil
Almond oil is good for eyes and ajwain is soothing in nature may be that's y she used those. There r different traditions in different regions all are good. But in north only cow ghee is used.

Kajal is not only safe to use, but actually healthy for the eye.
Modern chemicals used in makeup are toxic. Oftentimes, the old way is better than the modern.
True, apparently kajal can prevent your eyes (and the skin around it) from direct sun exposure. Good stuff.
Do kajal pencils actually have kajal?

Probably not. That’s why I wouldn’t trust them. Kajal is SO easy to make, so I think it’s better to just make it instead of buying the pencils.
