I may be reading into it too much, but maybe his “friends” are his insecurities and what’s plaguing him mentally. Each verse refers to these, and it’s either his way of coping with loneliness, or he has schizophrenia.
The jolliness of the song is a way to juxtapose the severity of his mental state.

Holy shit... I guess these guys won't be a one hit wonder after all. When I saw this come up on my phone I thought to myself, there's no way this is going to top 'Broken' . But I must say, I am blown the hell away. Their energy, the instrumental finesse, the vocals, the meaning in the words... Such a happy beautiful song that really makes me want to jam out.

All the people saying that they copied the 1975 just because they have a white background are incredibly ignorant. Watching this video is a whole new concept and does not follow them frame by frame. This is original in all aspects and just because one artist does it, it doesn’t mean that they are the owners of that certain style.
