Have y’all watched Matt and Abbies podcast on why they left Hawaii? I’d really look into what non-natives of Hawaii think and why they’ve left. There seems to be a lot of tension between locals/natives and people moving there from other states. There’s not a lot of available housing and people moving there cause the rent and real estate prices soar and make it hard for natives to find housing. Also make sure you really look into the history of Hawaii and how it was acquired by the US so you can have a genuine understanding of why there’s a deep tension and hurt for natives when it comes to non Hawaiian people moving in.

The Beeston family also touched on this when they moved. Power outages, constant theft of their property, and being able to do basic things like get a passport made living there stressful for them.

I lived on Maui for 14 years and moved back to the mainland a year ago. Rentals are scarce there right now and very high priced at the moment. I raised 2 of my children there. It is very difficult for kids not born there. We moved because our daughter who has only gone to school there from age 4 and is now 16 asked us to. Living there is not the same as visiting. The cost of living is very high as well. I would honestly say move close to your family and visit Hawaii as flights from Portland are often very inexpensive. Good luck with your move and choosing the best place to raise your family.

I’d agree with the earlier comment and encourage you to just visit Maui. Born and raised on Oahu, have family on Maui. Truthfully it’ll be a very different experience living on Maui than just a honeymoon, especially with young kids. So hard for locals to even find homes and people moving in just causes prices to go up. Visit and enjoy 🤙🏽.

Hawaii sounds amazing but being near family with 2 under 2 would definitely be a wiser choice. Good luck with wherever you decide to go with the economy rising and only getting worse it’s hard times for a lot of people. Definitely pray about and go from there! ❤

My husband was stationed on Oahu and we loved it! We just moved from there in April and we miss it! We recently found out that I’m pregnant with our first baby, and I’m grateful that we are closer to family. I know a lot of military wives who could not wait to get off the island, because it’s hard to raise to kids without the extra help. Just things to consider. Excited to see what God has in plan for you ❤️

Josh & Sav, I love y’all so much! Have been watching y’all forever! I currently live in Hawaii on Oahu and although it’s beautiful and seems like a “dream” to live here, without family it’s terrible especially with kids 😭 it’s been so hard raising our baby girl all the way over here so far from family. Having family around makes such a big difference. Flight expenses and how long flights are to travel back home with babies are also really hard so just think about that as well. We will be leaving Hawaii within the next year and are so excited to finally be able to be by family again after 5 years😭

I will say that my husband and I lived in Hana, Maui for 8 years, but after our first was born, we decided to get closer to family. My family is actually in MI, so the prices for them to visit were high, my mother in law in Oregon could get to us a little cheaper, but it was still hard! Island fever is real, finding affordable housing is a huge challenge and owning a home 😱 unless you have millions, close to impossible! .. but of course, the hiking and beaches are amazing! Research areas! Up country Maui is beautiful, kula and makawao! Then there are Kihei, Lahaina, paia etc…. We were in remote Hana- beautiful, but might not feel as welcomed… Oahu has a large, young mainlander community, and has some beautiful areas as well… and has more mainland conveniences. Big island is the cheapest housing wise… and has neat areas. Kauai is probably the most remote/expensive- but holy beautiful!!! We dream of going back to Hawaii…. But not until we can afford to buy a home… ❤️🙏🏻 good luck with your choices!! All moves are a fun adventure!!

I second this!!! I’m currently pregnant with my first and have lived here for the past 2 and half years. (We are leaving this year thank god) and it’s honestly and awful place to live. This place is not great when you don’t have family. And the homeless and mental health crisis is a HUGE problem here. 0/10 would not recommend

Hawaii cost of living is expensive but a very beautiful and relaxing place to live. I lived in Hawaii for 3 years as we werestationedn there. We lived on the island of Oahu.#Waikiki. My husband was stationed at Pearl Harbor, and we lived on Kaneohe Marine Base in Kailua on the windward side of the island. The lifestyle there is very laid back. The food is great as it's a very diverse mixture of Asian and Polynesian culture. I loved Hawaii and wanted to retire there, but the cost of living was a bit too much. You'll enjoy it regardless of the island you settle in, Oahu. Maui, Big Island, Kauia, Molokai, Lanai, Niiahu etc..

Washington on the green and beautiful distinct seasons / obviously rainy side is Seattle side. dry and more way more intense weather, way more snow, a bit more sun too, is the Spokane side, closer to being truly landlocked. Where I am, I am next to Mt.Rainier and Mt.St.Helens! In this area I'm as close to the ocean as I am the desert annnnd the mountains. There are trails and hikes, lakes, and it's a kind and welcoming area!! There is something for everyone here ☺️💪

I’m from Washington, and as much as I love it and it’s so beautiful, it’s kinda dangerous in areas and not as family friendly as you might like, however being near family would be soo helpful! We lived in north seattle area and just moved to Boise, ID and LOVE it!! New York I don’t feel like is a real “family” type of state and it would be a long flight for family and hawaii would be fun and beautiful, but it would be pretty far from family and another long flight. If y’all are okay with Renting and not necessarily looking to buy I would say- While the baby is still young and NOT school aged- give Hawaii or ny a try maybe move to both for a year or 2? And see how u like it?
If you can afford it and are up to it- it’s best to get the traveling and looking on potential home locations while the kids are young that way they aren’t in school and have friends ect.
Being away from family is extremely tough tho- I’ll tell ya that. I ended up moving back near my mama about a year and a half after moving to another state lol but yeah, and wherever you are moving actually look into things that matter like safety in the neighborhoods and the specific schools in the areas too cuz that’s #1 for a family ya kno? Unless u plan on homeschooling.
ny sounds cool but unless you got hella money- ur prob not gonna get a spot that is safe and in a good schooling zone .. ny dreams are ones for ppl without kids or for ppl who have tons of guap to be able to afford to live in nice safe neighborhoods especially with having growing daughters.
Hawaii always is beautiful- but in order for family to visit they HAVE to fly so if they down w that or if you rarely see them anyway then that isn’t a bad option.
But y’all got some time to move around and figure out where u wanna really raise your kiddos once they are school aged and whatnot.
PNW is always a great choice as u have family there and it’s beautiful! But certain areas the weather isn’t ideal unless ya like the cold and gloomy for long periods of time :)
And if u are very family oriented then of course it’s a no brainer- pnw! My mom passed away a few years ago and my biggest regret was the years I lived far away from her and she wasn’t able to see my son (her grandson) grow those years and I always wished I had been closer so we coulda had more time together. But u also got to do what ur heart is telling you and not just live somewhere out of guilt as that can be a tough feeling to go thru years later when ur looking back and regretting not atlesst TRYING new places. ❤ goodluck y’all!

A lot of people of Hawaii are unhappy with the amount of main land people who have moved their because it has severely raised the cost of living that they can’t afford to live in there home
