      To me at least, part of the reason is that a lot of the enjoyment is derived from exploring these titles regardless of their quality. It's a good time all around even when the games aren't that good, and it's fun seeing Binny experience them for what they are. It's vibes :)

    Cocoron is such an ambitious game. Not only do you get the character creator, but you have the combined levels. You can travel to any level from any other level, and each one then works as a transitional area to the selected level. Meaning there’s a bunch of possible combos. And on the NES, even.

    • @bixenter

    "This game goes for $2700" (or whatever the amount was) And that's a big reason why game preservation is so important! If it wasn't for emulation, a game like that would just be unavailable to play and could be almost completely lost

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 Год назад +32

      I love that Little Samson is over $2000 loose despite being dumped decades ago, yet there are collectors who believe that sharing the _digital data_ of their collection will somehow greatly devalue a *physically rare object.*
      That or they exploit the game preservation/lost media community for profit...
      That being said, Little Samson isn't made by some obscure company. It's a Taito game, so the odds of it being lost are basically 0. Pretty sure it was even on VC at one point. Not to detract from the core sentiment, just saying in this case that was never going to happen.

There's other obscure gems I know of that were officially released stateside as well though.
      Sorry for the laundry list, just figured I'd save you time on vetting, lol. Narrowed it down to exclude stuff that would be boring for a stream (ie the DOZENS of JRPGs & any adventure games/VNs), and all of these should be up on the sites I named. Omitted some ARPGs that could potentially work, but idk how well that would go on a sunday grabbag stream. Like, stuff like Esper Dream or Record of Radia War are sick, but might be a bit too slow to start for sunday stream.

  • @lethauntic

    Speaking of Metroid, I played through the series for the first time ever (not prime just yet, just the 2D ones) and I liked it a lot. It was on the lead up to Dread's launch so it was a good opportunity. For the original specifically, I actually did like it. It was fun. That said, though I tried playing without a guide, I did fall back on one pretty quickly. I'll tell you how much I knew about Metroid's gameplay; I knew the concept of using different ammo types on differently colored doors and not much more, but on the original it takes, what, like 5 missiles or something? I never knew that was a thing. I used 3 or 4 and went "I must be doing something wrong" and proceeded to wonder back and forth for, no kidding, 2 hours... on the first area btw. I wanted to play without a guide for as long as I could, but didn't even make it past the first missile door.
    After that the dam was open and I used the guide for the rest of the playthrough-- I explored an area first, then went to it, but I admit that looking at a guide with things labeled made it way quicker and had less to find for yourself-- not that I would have found 95% of any of that let's be clear. That said, as much as I liked playing the game, it would not have been worth the perseverance playing completely blind. It's far too janky and dated for me to have fun at that point. Rather, the enjoyment of discovery would have been vastly outweighed by annoyance and boredom. I'm not trying to dog on NES Metroid, I can see how discovering the game blind would be fun... As a kid where that's all you got. I was there, just not with Metroid. I felt like I got the peak amount of fun from the game using a guide the way I did. And it sounds like I'm being defensive over using a guide, but I try to get the most fun that I can out of a game and I need to judge if a game deserves the time and effort; and I'll do that even if it takes days or weeks. So that's why, even though many tell newcomers to skip the original, out of fear that it will turn them away, I'd say the opposite. To anyone wondering, you should play the original if you have any interest; knowing full well that the series only goes up from there. You don't need to beat it, but resort to a guide to get as much out of it as you can.
    Zero mission I think is just better-- though I see what Vin means in terms of it not have the same level of discovery, but it's the original Metroid we're talking about. I don't think that discovery is worth a lot. In a more modern game, like Super Metroid, sure, but no one's got time for that when it comes to NES Metroid. The only people who enjoy it to that level are people who've played it many times. Zero Mission is at least more bearable. And need I remind you of those bosses? Yikes! Not that I was ever used to NES games having amazing bosses, but still, even regular enemies were more fun than them. I liked the core movement, which probably sounds odd to some, but again it's an NES game, so my standards were lowered a lot, but at the end of it I was satisfied having played it first. I'll probably never play it again, at least not for more than 20 seconds, but I had fun. It's been too long for me to recall specific points as far as what I liked and disliked about it, so I've kind of just been rambling, but that's fine.
    All-in-all, Metroid Zero Mission is great, way better than the original in all ways personally speaking, but the original was worth playing.

      There's a difficulty in recommendation NES games because all of them have some form of "NES era bullshit" where the game has stuff like absurd difficulty spikes, huge masses of grinding, cryptic bullshit, etc. And the og Metroid and Zeld are no exceptions sadly. ESPECIALLY Zelda 1.

    1:02 Billy the Shell, an armadillo that lives in Texas, had a girlfriend. Her name was Sheryl, rumored to be the the prettiest armadillo in all of Texas. One day she was kidnapped by the evil 'Black Bean Gang.' Thus begins 'Operation Rescue Shell's Girlfriend,' seeking Sheryl out.

    I remember going to a family members house years ago as a kid. They had a bunch of NES games and I remember playing Journey to Silius (along with Mario, Zelda, and Kirby). I love the music but I could never beat the 2nd level on that game

    There's something so great about Vinny seeing games that pushed the NES to its limits, especially Little Samson and Gimmick. I didn't know Gimmick was getting a modern re-release too, that's awesome!

    I am beyond happy to see a stream of NES games that isn't just bad games and bootlegs. As someone that has been playing NES and Famicom games for most of the 2010's there are a lot of good ones I can recommend.

    Gimmick is absolutely my favorite game for the NES period. Its platforming and mechanics, its world and art design, its masterful ost, its just an experience that I think anyone who wants to play NES games should play. It's truly a showpiece for the system and Sunsoft

    Gimmick’s music is so wonderful and i still revisit it. It has an extra sound chip in the actual cart so that it can have more sound channels than normal

    • @aaroncrawford771
      @aaroncrawford771 Год назад +1

      Sadly, the expansion chip still requires audio expansion channels that only the Famicom has, which makes the cartridge incompatible with the NES unless you either remove the expansion chip or modify the NES to include the audio expansion channels. As a result, the EU release it got has a totally gimped soundtrack. I listened to it once, and it's just as disappointing as you'd expect. Thankfully, the original Famicom OST is on RUclips in at least a few different forms.

    Anytime I hear Tim Follin involved in any game, its just an absolute blessing and I automatically get a respect for the game. This dude is such a legend with the stuff he's composed including Jim Power, Super Off-Road, Plok, Starsky and Hutch and now this lovely game called Gimmick. I dunno how he does it, but i love every bit of it.

    Damn dude you need a day for each of those games stat.
    Funnyhe brings up Lagoon too, I played it because its basically a natural progression from Crystalis. Outside of the sword issue. The thing about him talking about a "fix" is that the original version of Lagoon I think from a PC game or something, the sword essentially was fine. They broke it for the SNES.

    I think what I like so much about the NES/Famicom is the wealth of genuinely good titles on the system, but that's what happens when you're so dominant on two continents and have shitty developer contracts that basically bar you from making something for somebody else. Some of my personal faves are Wai Wai World 2, Sugoro Quest, Splatter House: Wanpaku Graffiti, New Ghostbusters II, and Zombie Hunter
