Just saw Scream 1996 in the cinema for the first time and I totally agree. It’s one of my fave movies but seeing it in a cinema with a crowd is completely different. Born in 1997 and being able to see one of my favourite movies from before I was born in a cinema is a surreal experience
I love all the first 3 Scream movies. The fourth and fifth are okay, but the brilliant directing by Wes Craven and the writing by Kevin Williamson really elevates them to movies I enjoy watching every Halloween.
I was 15 when this movie first came out. There was such a big hype for this movie at the time. I remember being so excited to finally see it. Saw it opening night with my older sister. We had a blast. Excited to see it again tonight in the theater. It's still my second favorite Scream movie in the series with the first one being my favorite.
I love Scream 2. I remember seeing it in a packed theater, and I love how it still holds up. The scene that still bothers me is the one where Randy chastises Joshua Jackson’s character over the line in Aliens, when Randy was wrong and Joshua was right. I don’t know why, but as someone who went to film school that error grinds my gears

Favorite Scream sequel easily! I especially love the chase through the sound studio and the score there. I also love how many characters this film juggles. There are scenes in the middle where different combinations of characters are grouped together for different scenes and encounter other characters unexpectedly (like Cotton confronting Sydney in the library) One minor thing I don't care for is that for Dewey, the film's score recycles some music from the film Broken Arrow, which is fine, but it clashes with Beltrami's score and sticks out in kind of a bad way. But yeah this movie slaps. I always think I don't like it that much, but then I rewatch it and I'm always surprised at how many little things it does that rock

Scream 2 is a really solid sequel. I was lucky enough to see it in the cinema back in ‘98 (it came out later in the UK) and I really enjoyed the whole film but I have two clear memories from my first viewing - 1) Being really sad when Randy (my favourite character) got killed off and 2) THAT police car scene and the audience reaction during that scene. The tension during that scene was off the scale and people were losing their shit, it was brilliant!
Those are the exact same feelings I have! I hated that Randy died... And the cop car scene was very nerve-wracking and topped all off by a nice (shocking!) finish to Hallie.😂
Seeing horror in the cinema really is a whole different experience. I always watch with friends if I'm viewing something at home because an audience with different reactions makes even bad horror more exciting

I actually like this one more than the first one. Maybe a lot of it has to do with the fact that I saw it in the cinema twice at the time - thank you, Chris, now I realised it seems to be designed to be seen in that way. And that scene with Randy, when he talks to the killer... and the music... oh, the memories... :)
This is an absolutely brilliant sequel, ive always throughly enjoyed how they stepped up the horror and brought Dewie Gail and even Sidney towards real friendship. WES I LOVE YOU !!
I think behind that sequel debate is that Empire Strikes Back was conceived from the beginning as a second part of a larger story in which New Hope is just a first part. On the other hand, Godfather: Part II is a sequel that was conceived and shot only after the first one was successful. That has been my understanding. I don't know how steady it stands: maybe ESB wasn't pre-planned or maybe Godfather: Part II was.
Absolutely fantastic movie. I saw this in theaters when I was younger and I LOVED it. It was one of the first R rated movies I ever saw in theaters and I remember feeling so cool because so many of my friends hadn't been allowed to see it. I still love 'Scream' a bit more, but there are some parts of 'Scream 2' that were better than the 1st. That scene in the police car gave me such anxiety at the time. I don't think I breathed once during that whole scene the first time. I also thought the reveal at the end was pretty well done. But that whole scene of Dewey, Gale, and Randy talking to the killer on campus and trying to ambush anyone who happened to be talking on the phone...so...well...done. I just love how that was setup. Love it.
Both those scenes are okay, but them not killing Ghostface when he was knocked out was jaw-droppingly stupid and I cannot forgive Wes for killing off Randy.
Plus also a lot of people seemed to be forgetting that Scream 6 is not the first time a Scream film has been taken out of Woodsboro. Scream 2 is. You could argue the same for Scream 3 but seeing as the Stab 3 film is called Return To Woodsboro, it's more or less Sidney, Gale and Dewey going back there.
I saw it in theaters last night too, I actually had a bad crowd but it didn’t detract from the experience that much for me, I always really liked Scream 2 but seeing it in the theater made me absolutely love it. I think it’s basically a perfect sequel. Scream’s biggest strength for me is the incredible trio of characters and their amazing performances.
4:50 what always annoyed me is how everyone in the class seems to be taken by surprise by the godfather 2...as if that weren't THE most obvious answer to the question, that EVERY one of them should have immediately thought of as soon as it was asked
I love this one!!! Its a fantastic Sequel and it might be my favourite one in the Franchise. Its sad Neve Campbell won't be returning for Scream 6. Wes Craven was taken way too soon, may he rest in peace.
Scream 2 is the movie I've seen the most times in the theater in its initial run. I saw it 5 times in 1997/98. It's my favorite of the franchise. Went for the 6th time this Sunday.
I've seen the Scream films this many times in theatres: Scream - 2 times Scream 2 - 1 time Scream 3 - 1 time Scream 4 - 12 times (including once in IMAX) Scream 5 - 6 times
@@Joker_JAK I didn't even know they released Scream 4 in IMAX. I don't recall seeing it in that format. Other than 2, I've seen the first twice and others once each in the theater.
My mom & I were supposed to go see this in the theater tonight, but she is sick so we can't make it. A little bummed because I've never seen it on the big screen. But I'm happy you put out this video, nice to hear you talk about it!
Scream is my favorite movie of all time. Started my love for horror movies. Made my mom take me to go see Scream 2 in theatres when I was in 3rd grade.
I think the logic behind that statement "EMPIRE STRIKES BACK doesn't count as a sequel while GODFATHER PART II does" comes from that, back in the '80's and '90's, George Lucas always championed the myth that he had planned his entire trilogy out from the beginning. Today we all know that isn't true as more production stuff is known. So the logic that character has is that ESB isn't a "true sequel" because he believes it had always been planned since before 1977.
I saw this in a theater when it came out and always loved it more than the first one. Also I understand the diference between part of a trilogy and sequel, and it has to do with the story. I think the problem is with the word trilogy wich means group of 3, and has nothing to do with the point he's making. Storywise, he refers to a sequel as a movie wich is part of the franchise but has it's independent story. You can watch Aliens without ever seeing Alien, but you can´t watch Empire without watching New Hope. Or Two Towers without seeing The Fellowship, or Back to The Future 2 without seeing the original, because they're the next chapter in the same plot. On the other hand, you can watch any entry on the Die Hard, Lethal Weapon or Indiana Jones franchises without ever watching the original. That's what Randy considers sequels, another independent story in the same franchise.
I thought the same thing on the Scream 2 sequel rant, Chris. I was always confused by it. But funny enough, Scream 2 is my personal favorite over the first. Love almost all of them, but this worked just a tad more for me.
Am I the only one who enjoys Scream 2 even more more the original? The suspense and chase scenes are the best in the franchise in my opinion. The storytelling telling and character development was spot on especially with Gale. The set pieces like the car crash scene.. opening scene in the theatre ect are brilliant. Also note this is the only movie in the franchise that requires no phone call in the opening scene. Thank you Wes 🙏
No you are not alone haha. To me Scream 1 and 2 are equal. Both have certain aspects they do better. But if I would have to say which movie is more enjoyable and rewatchable for me, it would definitely be Scream 2. The setting, the characters, the suspense and the ghostface scenes are just more appealing to me than the ones from the first movie.
I saw this in theaters back in 97! Wanted to go watch it again this past Sunday but used the money to buy the movie in 4k. Will be watching it this weekend at home. I’ve been saying for years this is the best scream! Yes better than 1. Imo
I see IMDb has it rated +16. Had to find out how 13 yr old me was allowed to see this without parents. Close enough I guess. Your bringing back lots of memories Chris. Thanks for these Halloween Specials! 👏🏼
*_Scream 2 was in production-maybe even done filming-before Scream had it's premiere. Scream 2 was in theaters barely 9 months after Scream. Is this a record?_*
I feel like Neve Campbell in "Scream 2." She thinks she can go off to college and be happy. And then, the murderer comes back and starts killing off all of her friends. Learned a lot of lessons from that movie. This is just one of them.
To be fair (In regards to Randy's comment about The Empire Strikes Back) - The Godfather wasn't originally planned to be a trilogy. That happened because the first movie was such a box office juggernaut. But, that being said, I freaking love this movie.
Neve was so sweet in this one, I loved her at that time 😉 The movie was great follow up to Scream. Opening with Jada thrilling as hell, college session about sequels funny and intelligent, while music scene with Cassandra on stage just pure gold.
I hope you check out the movie 'Watcher' for your October month or otherwise. I found it very chilling and tightly directed. I'd love to know what you think of it.
When I saw the new Scream movie in theaters, the main thing that pissed me off was it's nowhere near the quality of a Wes Craven movie. I'm also mad we'll never get a "new" one, and I think Scream as a film franchise said everything it needed to with the fourth installment because the fifth one just felt like a repeat of that whole "legacy sequel/reboot" and Scream NEVER repeated itself until now, that was always part of the appeal, even if Scream 3 mirrors Wes Craven's New Nightmare. I think what Scream 2 was trying to say is Godfather 3 wasn't "planned", the first the installments were but it was never meant to have the three act structure of a trilogy. It's up to each individual what they actually think of such a rule imposement as well as the films themselves, but that's why we dissect and discuss these things and how they made us feel. This was always a great film, but the reason why it pissed fans off is it killed off the fan favorite character in a stupid way early on (think Scream 5).
I think the sequel conversation was defining a sequel as a follow-up movie that wasn't initially planned, but came about solely because of the success of the first movie. And in reference to Empire not being a sequel, it's the idea that George Lucas had all three original Star Wars planned out, while the third Godfather wasn't planned until several years after Part 2. That part I believe is true, even if the movie's definition of a sequel is a bit off in my opinion. Or you can interpret it as Randy not being as knowledgeable as he thinks he is, as a representation of audiences not being as smart as they think are, which is a theory I've seen online. In the end, I just love this movie for Timothy Olyphant's scenery chewing. My favourite Scream killer in the entire series.
I feel like watching a movie in theaters, specially one you maybe weren’t that fond for before, really heightens the experience. I recently watched Rogue One and Avatar in IMAX, and I had never really cared for either, but the experience of watching them in theaters really changed my outlook on them.
watching a horror movie in theaters really is something else. i saw the ring in theaters opening weekend. everyone in the audience was screaming during the tv scene, because watching with other people in that environment makes it scarier, which is really what we're all after when we watch horror. i love that movie because seeing it the first time in theaters was so good
I feel compelled to note that there is a somewhat significant distinction between The Godfather Part 3 and the components of the Star Wars Original Trilogy, even though I agree with you that sequels are still sequels even when they’re part of a planned trilogy or series. The distinction, which the characters acknowledged, is that Godfather Part 2 (and 3, for that matter), was not planned or even imagined until the success of the first film caused the studio to throw buckets of money at the people behind the first movie and demand a sequel. By contrast, the ideas for the Star Wars trilogy were, in rough form, planned before the first Star Wars hit theaters, albeit with no expectation that the original would actually be successful enough to justify making those sequels. So, there’s a behind the scenes distinction even if it’s meaningless to audience members. You would expect planned trilogies to generally be better than sequels where a second entry just gets made because of the phenomenal success of a standalone movie. For instance, new Disney Star Wars is incredibly uneven because they had no real plan. Wholly agree with you on Alien versus Aliens, though!
I saw this my junior year of college when it was released, presented at a drive-in -- which was a perfect venue -- double featured with "Paulie"...yes the adorable little family film, "Paulie" about a girl and a talking parrot. Never was a double feature so mismatched, but I loved it all.
I’ve seen all the Scream movies in the theater. 1 and 2 are my favorites. Best part of 2 is when Randy is going off on the killer. Absolutely love it every single time.
This movie is so well made. The script is super sharp as they really nailed the “everyone is a suspect” element while balancing tons of characters. We get a lot of graphic kills without ever feeling like the film is dependent on it, rather it hinges more on the tension and mystery. The meta commentary is also on point and very naturally woven into the story. The Mrs Loomis reveal is probably the only wet fart moment as it was an unnecessary shoehorn - they really had something with Mickey as it totally fit the themes of the story. Everything else here is borderline brilliant especially for how rushed the production was.
Interesting that you dont like the Mrs. Loomis twist. It is actually one of the reasons why I like this movie so much. It creates this bridge between the sequel and the original by giving the sequel a reason to exist that was actually already set up in the original. Other then that I completely agree with you.
I literally watched it last night in theaters too and the experience was perfect! I’ve never seen this until last night so when the twist happened and also during the death scenes I had chills. I really like both Scream 1 & 2 equally, haven’t seen the others yet except for the newest one
I remember seeing this with my girlfriend in high school. I love this even more than the first one. I like the ending now more than I did back then knowing who the Killer really was.
Chris, love your reviews. You are the only one who I respect to give good honest review. However you leave me wanting more. Like this review here. I wanted to see your review on Scream 3. Same as well for a review on films like Cabin Fever. Keep em coming 👍🏾
The Den (2013) I'm curious if Chris has ever gotten around to seeing this movie. It's a really solid, thoughtful, and genuinely scary found footage film. And the director, Zachary Donahue, has a very Lynchian web series coming out on 10/25 called The Unknowable. Seriously, check it out!
Another thing this sequel does that I think is a brilliant way of making the audience feel like no-one is safe, even if it also annoyed a lot of people, was the decision to kill off Randy. He's the horror film nerd, the whole idea of rules comes from him, that arguably being the second biggest staple of the series save for Ghost Face himself, so I think that as sad as it is when this fan favorite character dies, it was really smart decision. Not only that but the whole setup for his death I think is great, it being out in broad daylight with people around, and the detail that unlike a lot of the other victims in this franchise, Randy stands up to Ghost Face pretty much the entire scene without showing a whole lot of fear, got to give the guy points for that.
I think people don't understand that "the rules" don't actually apply and save people. That's the whole point. For instance, as Randy says only virgins can defeat the killer at the end, Sidney is losing her virginity. She survives despite not being a virgin. He also said that you can never drink or do drugs, but he and the other party goers all survive despite drinking. He also said never say "I'll be right back", but Gale says it and survives.
You noticed the sequel debate, but failed to notice that a character correctly quotes a line from 'Aliens' only to be told he was wrong. That was the part that always bothered me. Lol
Man the Halloween Special continues to be my favorite thing Chris does.
I love to eat food while smoking weed on my RUclips channel, to cure people’s boredom :)

I love Scream 2. I think it's almost as good as the original. Just a really well-crafted film with, like you said, some really nice intense sequences!
Lol we have the same name and the same opinion. Dominik`s just have taste.
Not gonna lie. I actually like this movie a lot more than the other sequels - and it’s MILES better than Scream 3 😂. Definitely a worthy watch.
Every year I look forward to these horror movie recaps. Now looking forward to your own release.
I've seen the Scream films this many times in theatres:
Scream - 2 times
Scream 2 - 1 time
Scream 3 - 1 time
Scream 4 - 12 times (including once in IMAX)
Scream 5 - 6 times
@@Joker_JAK I didn't even know they released Scream 4 in IMAX. I don't recall seeing it in that format.
Other than 2, I've seen the first twice and others once each in the theater.
@@KhalidQuesada Oh yeah. It definitely released in IMAX. I saved all my ticket stubs. It was a blast.
Love when you do this every year man glad you’re still keeping this tradition! 😁
Man that scene where they have to crawl over ghost face, stayed in my memory forever. So good!
My mom & I were supposed to go see this in the theater tonight, but she is sick so we can't make it. A little bummed because I've never seen it on the big screen. But I'm happy you put out this video, nice to hear you talk about it!
Chris, I love your commentary. Your discussion of the best sequel parts bugging you is a great example of why :)
I can't believe it's been 25yrs OMG 😱. I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out. I love this film so much!
I adore Scream 2.. it's as perfect and nostalgic as the original
I miss the ratings man please bring them back 😔
I saw this in a theater when it came out and always loved it more than the first one.
Scream 2 is one of the best horror sequel's of all time
I’m overload with work but I have to stop and watch this RIGHT NOW
Am I the only one who enjoys Scream 2 even more more the original?
THANK YOU for mentioning that stupid sequel debate in this movie. The empire strikes back line always pissed me off
I've always loved Scream 2, it's by far my favourite of all the Scream films. I'm surprised to hear that some Scream fans don't care for it.
One of the best sequels there is. Magic in a bottle twice imho. The cop car sequence is 🤌
I saw this in theaters back in 97! Wanted to go watch it again this past Sunday but used the money to buy the movie in 4k. Will be watching it this weekend at home. I’ve been saying for years this is the best scream! Yes better than 1. Imo
Scream 2 has always been my favorite of the franchise. It gets better every time I watch it.
Its also so addictive. I just watched on Thursday with my mom and I could watch it again.
I see IMDb has it rated +16. Had to find out how 13 yr old me was allowed to see this without parents. Close enough I guess. Your bringing back lots of memories Chris. Thanks for these Halloween Specials! 👏🏼
I absolutely love the Scream franchise! Glad you did this review. I will be having a scream marathon this week.
I literally just watched this yesterday, mostly for the police car scene! wish I could watch that scene for the first time again
*_Scream 2 was in production-maybe even done filming-before Scream had it's premiere. Scream 2 was in theaters barely 9 months after Scream. Is this a record?_*
Honestly I love that my generation is starting to reminisce old horror instead of insult it😭😭
Scream 2 has always been one of my favorites definitely and just was incredible truly amazing
I feel like Neve Campbell in "Scream 2." She thinks she can go off to college and be happy. And then, the murderer comes back and starts killing off all of her friends. Learned a lot of lessons from that movie. This is just one of them.
Poor Michael...
6:50 me with dead man’s chest Pirates of the Caribbean. ☠️☠️☠️
As someone who always felt like Randy, I've never turned my back to a door since I saw this movie.
One of my favorite sequels and horror films of all time. ADORE Scream 2 (and Scream 1)
5:19 Neve Campbell is actually going to be in Scream 6 and 7
I feel like watching a movie in theaters, specially one you maybe weren’t that fond for before, really heightens the experience.
Just watched H2O tonight and it still holds up pretty well. Can’t wait for his review of it this year.
Only saw 1&3 in theaters. Missed 2,4 & 5 🤔
@@randalgraves6979, what did you think of 5 once you did see it??
This movie has the best Gale hair of the original trilogy (4 is past the point where she feels young enough to need to style it so wildly)
I also saw this in Theaters. I learned to appreciate this movie more than I did before. Me and my friends had a good time 🖤
This movie is so well made.
Seeing this in the theaters in my youth was everything
Love to see Chris review every Wes Craven film. Great review Chris.
I literally watched it last night in theaters too and the experience was perfect! I’ve never seen this until last night so when the twist happened and also during the death scenes I had chills. I really like both Scream 1 & 2 equally, haven’t seen the others yet except for the newest one
Scream 3 is ok And Scream 4 is good
@@MrBibi86 Exactly
I remember seeing this with my girlfriend in high school. I love this even more than the first one. I like the ending now more than I did back then knowing who the Killer really was.
loved watching this movie when I was a kid. I remember watching in theater with my friends when I was in middle school
Chris, love your reviews. You are the only one who I respect to give good honest review. However you leave me wanting more. Like this review here. I wanted to see your review on Scream 3. Same as well for a review on films like Cabin Fever.
Keep em coming 👍🏾
The Den (2013)
I'm curious if Chris has ever gotten around to seeing this movie. It's a really solid, thoughtful, and genuinely scary found footage film. And the director, Zachary Donahue, has a very Lynchian web series coming out on 10/25 called The Unknowable. Seriously, check it out!
now I need Chris to make a review on the Godfather trilogy
@@Joker_JAK Great point. Scream 3 to me fails at that by falling into the very tropes it mocks without any nuance or cleverness to them.
wes directed the hell out of scream 2. it’s become my favorite one
You noticed the sequel debate, but failed to notice that a character correctly quotes a line from 'Aliens' only to be told he was wrong. That was the part that always bothered me. Lol
