30X40 Design Workshop Why is this masterclass chargeable anyways.. There are people who can't afford.. And they deserve to be educated.. I'm sure Gehry has earned a lot by now.. Why not pass on his knowledge.. They want to make money out of everything.. Greedy
Frank Gehry's Documentary link does not work. Is there a way we can still view it? By the way, thank you for your incredible videos, they inspire beyond words.
30X40 Design Workshop can I take this masterclass without any professional education history in architecture ? I’m just aspiring to be an architect but not yet started the journey
KELLY WEARSTLER, an interior designer just released a Masterclass. Wanted to know your thoughts. I’m just getting into it and I feel like I am getting more out of it as a practicing architect than Frank Gehry’s.
I adore your lifestyle as an architect, you are an organized person in your office and everything concerning your career, I like the way that you work in an isolated environment which might increase your focus on each project.
I never expected someone to make a review of the course, I've been sitting on going through it for a while (as in, its been a pinned tab on my browser for about 3 months now), so this is a pleasant surprise and a much needed push. Great review!
Wow. Thanks for this honest review eric. I was skeptical when seeing the ad to this course on RUclips. Definitely gonna enroll after watching your review.
Thank you very much Eric for sharing with us. I really love your channel. It helps me a lot as a student. I hope you never get tired making videos to helps us. Cheers.
I enjoy your classes, I have recently discivered your channel, I am an Architect from Argentina who had lead with depression since 19 because of my mother passing away. I´ve learned english by myself and I appreciate the videos.
I am not also a fan of Frank Gehry's works. Although, I have big adulation for his success as an architect. I am more of a Frank Lloyd Wright's fan. I love his works and how he integrates nature in his designs.
Dude, when I watch your videos it always inspires me to make more stuff, and educate myself more. I am currently a senior arch student at UT San Antonio. Stay safe & cheers.
I'm no architect, I wish I was. I am here because the trailer was probably the best ad I've seen in my life, truly inspiring. Your review was quite solid, sincere thanks.
Wow, I cant believe I saw a review of this course on you part. It is brave of you to have done it, knowing that there were many critics around the world around this course, although, seeing your review, I think many unfounded and even exaggerated. Now I can say that this course is not for me, at least for now, but I'm glad to have seen your review, now I understand much better what it actually offers. thanks!
you're welcome +Mauro Cerino. if one comes to the course looking for specifics on how to be an architect, or how to be Frank Gehry, it would be easy to criticize. however, if one see this as professional mentorship, an opportunity to listen to the stories and anecdotes of a very successful architect, then (I think) it's hard to criticize. thanks for watching...
totally agree. The theme is that it spread even in specialized media such as Plataforma Arquitectura and Architizer. With questions of order "Is it possible to learn to be an architect learning in an online course?" And without a way to know exactly the specific objective of the same any (myself included) could easily dismiss this course. I'm on the other side now. regards.
Thank you for this! I was very excited and a bit skeptical when I saw Gehry doing a Masterclass. The whole Masterclass series seems like such a cool concept that could very easily fail to live up to lofty expectations. I've been waffling on it for awhile, but I think you just convinced me to give it a shot later this year.
You're welcome my friend. I think the trick is to manage your expectations. Know that you're not going to come away with a raft of actionable information, rather it's time spent with a true master of our craft. That kind of access is precious and rare and whatever form it comes in, I'll take it. I think it's a great investment in your professional development. Cheers...
I am really glad that you made this video. I would also like to know how Gehry goes from a rough sketch to a master piece, in step by step, explaining his thinking however; I am glad he doesn't. He allows the student to learn from their own outlooks. I looked at the course outline before, now I will enrol. Thanks Eric
Great review! Your review was informative, honest and positive! So impressed. Long before I purchased and watched the video, Sketches of Frank Gehry by Sydney Pollack, I have always admired Mr. Gehry's stoic determination to stay focused and true to his visions of architecture. I keep a growing file of articles regarding Mr. Gehry's creations. My favorite is the article regarding the design and creation of his yacht. Mr. Gehry will always live as my hero.
thanks for the honesty of the review! also it is very informative and at the same time it is very well planned. im sure you are putting on a lot of work to prepare these videos. thanks for the effort too !
I'm always looking for opportunities to learn, especially concerning architecture and particularly about someone or something different than the way I normally think and design. Like a child, I love learning - yes, I will take the Gehry Masterclass.
Thank u for sharing ur reviews on FG’s masterclass, helps a lot to understand how masterclass provides and what we can learn. Looking forward to subscribing masterclass.
Great review Eric - thank you for sharing your experience on the course. It's one that's interested me, and I have clients (who are just super interested in design) who've done it and enjoyed it.
I am a huge fan of Gehry's work. I think he is part genius architect / part mad scientist. I love that his designs are so free form and outside the box. My original major was architecture, but I ended up in graphic design. While I was great at design, board work (this was the dinosaur days pre CAD), and perspective drawings, my 3d model making skills sucked. My classmates agreed that I had a "glue curse." Basically NO glue I used would hold. (My Le Cobusier chair project literally melted during the presentation. LOL) I often wonder if in this age of the 3d printer if I would have thrived. So, while I didn't end up in my original field, I LOVED my classes at Drexel University, and I LOVE architecture. I am presently teaching an Intro to Architecture class to middle and high school students. I find your videos fascinating and inspiring. Thank you. I wondered about Frank Gehry's Masterclass, and I'm hoping to take the course. Thank you for the review.
LOVED the expression "cross pollination"!!! very well put, thats exactly what we seek by taking tangets to other fields of knowledge for creativity boosts (and what I imagine, in turn, what professionals from other fields must look for when interested in ours). I'm from Brazil, so I didn't know that expression in particular yet, but will surely use it in an opportune moment (should it arise). hahaha
Maybe Im not looking hard enough, but it feels like in this age of mass comunication several professions and hobbies have a very rich online database of thinkers, enthusiasts, commentators, guide makers, opinion leaders and taste makers. But the field of architecture doest feel to me like it has that rich online presence and of the content that is most easily available its usually locked behind a paywall or only the (usually enriching) voices of starchitects are really heard. Even the modt populous sites like Archdaily have little comentary or live discussion. Is it the introverted/reserved nature of architects or their very busy lives doing this or am I simply looking in the wrong places?
That said, I think resouces such as this Masterclass do help very much in the polination of thoughts, ideas and methodology of the profession and its a welcome resource. I myself will probably be taking it in the near future. Thanks for the informative review.
Archinect.com has a pretty active forum that offers commentary on the profession. They also have a podcast where they talk with the 'star' practitioners (in addition to up and coming voices in the profession).
I've taken this masterclass a week ago. while I expected something else from it but in general, it's not that bad. Sure it doesn't teach you to be like Frank or to design stuff like he does. Instead, it's more like a source of inspiration or a few general things for designers and architects to consider.
I enjoyed your presentation, Eric, as I always do. In early 2016, I was fortunate enough to tour a Gehry designed house in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. It was quite a treat to see, but I have my own reservations about his work. I also, by happenstance, met Thom Mayne earlier this year and he provided a personal tour of his own recently completed residence in Los Angeles. Both of those houses are complex amalgamations of esoteric study. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but, here is my question for everyone. Licensed architects design very few of the houses that are built in the United States, so are we, as a profession, pushing too far with intellectualization of architecture to be accessible to most people? I have my own answer to this, but I want to hear what others think. Cheers, SCR
If I do this class, I will be sure to come back to follow this link for yah... I am hope at some point master class will connect with another Architect or Designer. I can think of a handful that I find fascinating and would love to have an inside peak into their practice and studio. Thomas Heatherwick, Herzog + De Meuron, Diller Scofidio, the list goes on... Thanks for your thoughts!
Masterclass clips & videos are so damn short. Tbh feels so abbreviated & wish they’d let people truly talk. Can’t talk architectural concepts or his sketches even make it to the final part. BIG respect but what the heck
I had friends who worked for Frank Gehry, first off he has a hard time remembering your name. He would hand you a crumpled piece of paper and ask you how fast you can put it on the computer. Gehry project often resemble a vinyl record that's been left out in the sun too long. Which are major headaches for structural engineers and nightmare for mechanical engineers to heat and cool.
I took the class. I loved it. Especially glimpses of his sketches. I agree there was a bit too much talking head though. Overall it is definitely a class I will revisit from time to time.
You're a really sharp guy, inciteful, and articulate. I've watched several of your videos so far, and intend to watch more. Gehry, and architects like him, those who sell extravagant designs, are in a small minority in the industry. That's not because there isn't a load of architects who are just as creative, it's because there is a very limited number of clients who have the desire and the money for that sort of thing. That client wants a flamboyant building that will get his company, or just his name, the public notice he yearns for. Those clients don't just want a crazy building, they need one designed by a famous architect, not an unknown. This is about fame, boasting, pride, but it's also an investment. There undoubtedly are Gehry clients who actually earn back the building's extra high cost due to the publicity brought by its oddness, and famous designer. I'm pretty sure that Bilboa has brought in more than enough visitors to have repaid it's extremely high. In short, this is a pretty small niche in the architectural design world. Many students produce designs that are as imaginative as any of Gehry's, but clients to pay for their construction are very rare. Architectures main goals are getting the clients stuff protected from weather and thieves, and meeting the legal requirements. The spaces are what the client needs, he gets the outside as an unavoidable side effect. The budget to make that exterior look good is often rather tight. I'd be interested in seeing a video where you address this subject, even if you completely disagree with my position.
Thank you for this and please continue your great work! How long and how much time you have invested in the course on a daily/weekly basis? I am working on my ARE exams and I am wondering if this is some I can squeeze in my schedule or should I put it aside until I am done with my exams. What do you recommend, Eric? Also, I am interested to know what other Masterclasses you have taken so far? :)
Hi +Loaei Haifa, glad you found this one helpful. The videos are between 5 and 16 mins each so they're easy to fit in to almost any schedule I would say. And, you can return to them anytime, so it's self-paced. For you, they might be a welcome break from the rigor of the ARE studying. I've also taken DeadMau5 and Werner Herzog's MCs and I'll be enrolling in Annie Leibovitz (photography) next, then Aaron Sorkin's class. Good luck on the AREs, not very many make it as far as you've come...!
Absolutely +William Mcmeekin...the Pre-Enrollment is just an on-boarding process, when you sign-up they'll give you access within a very short time (this has happened to me with at least a couple of MasterClasses). Some of the videos were re-recorded at Gehry's request which originally pushed back the release date, but they're all up now...I think you'll enjoy it. Cheers...
Yes +Vrend Viz, I think it will give you a window into how he approaches solving problems and it's a nice mix of practical and theoretical too. Check out my playlist (How to Think Like an Architect) too: ruclips.net/p/PLuJj3iQpiK3squltn2Z721UR8JXkU9s6w
30X40 Design Workshop Thanks Mr. Eric, I'm a great follower of your channel and your website, your advice, sketches are always an inspiration. I'm very passionate about architecture, 32 yrs old and currently working in Dubai as an architectural draftsman since March 2008 i'd appreciate if you could help me or advise "how to become an licensed architect" to be frank, my educational qualification is Very bad (only till 10th grade) i went to learn draftsman civil after my school days instead of colleges, but i have a great experience in the architectural field, also i'm very good in softwares such as AutoCAD, 3ds max and vray I know it's a hard to become an architecture but there's always a WAY to reach every goal, Your valuable reply is highly appreciated..
I would really like to enroll in to this Masterclass , because i really passionate about his design principle about movement or fluidity. The only thing that is bothering me right now is the cost of this course.... sigh
I am an architecture student and im having a pretty hard time deciding on what type of design ideas i need to follow. Im trying my best to learn the antiquity and all the modern architecture to 1st get a better vision of architecture.. I hope you are getting my problems any help you might think will work for me??
Hello. I am planning to enroll but actually I am just a student so I want to ask them if they offer any discount for students? So do you sir know anything about that?
Hi! I am a draftsman. And I am wondering if this Masterclass of Frank Gehry is ideal for someone like me in the same profession. Is this class also geared towards beginners in architectural design?
I really had to balance listening to you talk about the class and giving your bookshelf the death stare. 😂 Do you have a video of book recommendations?
certainly...like any masterclass parts of it will focus on the general concepts and routines while other parts will be understood by professionals with years of experience. this class has a good balance.
The problem with Gehry is that he doesn't focus on beauty, he focuses on randomness, his designs are scribble in the the form of a building. Older architecture is beautiful because of it's symbolic forms and use of natural materials, it doesn't try to impose and doesn't have an imaginary sign telling you to "suck it up". Architects should not impose, they should create designs that are objectively beautiful and functional. We need to draw the line somewhere.
Hey I have been watching your channel for a while, and I'm a intelligent mobility student in Royal college of art, I'm trying to get some arechetecture design thinking into future work. As tutor suggested, I have tried to comibine some thoughts into car styling also design process. If possible please demenstrate some very little process in terms of thinking and ideas for a project. Thank you!
Be sure to check out the playlists on my channel, here's a few to get you started: ruclips.net/p/PLuJj3iQpiK3uPL5PaDjPUS3vQbS2UtHC0 + ruclips.net/p/PLuJj3iQpiK3v7tqYStltImkMxe2iu-l_L
thank you for the review, helps me to make a more educated decision . By the way, just want to say that I enjoy your videos, very professional, keep going!
No doubt, no more "Gehrys" are needed in the world. New paths are needed, new directions based on other ideas. I welcome this new delivery, colleague. A cordial greeting
I love Frank as a person and an architect, but I don't really like his architecture. Love "Sketches of Frank Gehry". It reminds me of being back in the studio at college.
I felt exactly the same way +Tim Barber, which is one of the reasons I wanted to take the course, to better understand his motivations. He really cultivates the artist's mindset and I found that particularly fascinating...it's hard to do in a world where the commercial pressures on our work so often dominate the discussion. Always good to challenge our own deeply held beliefs about things, this did that for me. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts...
First time I heard of Master Class was when I saw a youtube ad of Hans Zimmer's Master Class (I'm a huge fan of his work). Then I came across Frank Gehry's, which is another icon that I admire and respect. I decided to enroll in his class but needed to know how it is formatted, and I thank you for letting us know. The reason to why I want to enroll is because I'm an architecture student, in my third year. For me, architecture was never an option but was forced to take it. (initially I was pressed to study medicine but did not go down that path) And I guess, all this time I was, and still, searching for something that would make me love and enjoy architecture more than I do (this is important to me if I want to make architecture the career of my life). Taking History of Architecture helped a lot, though. So now I'm looking out of the scope of university material to help me even more with that. Anyways that was long, I just want to thank your for this honest video, now I have the courage to take the class. :)
thank you. actually i can't get the a full class. i just can see a trailer. but i really enjoy your review however i can't access a full class. it help me out. i just disappointed when i can't role a full class. i just hope they want to open free class for college student like me.
I just started watching your youtube channel. I wish i could join your other channel for $4.99 a month. But right now i just cant. I hope in the near future i will be able to do it, i am getting a lot from you and I would like to meet you one day, and just sit and talk to you one on one. Thank you for what you are doing.
I would be interested, but Frank Gehry's work is not my cup of tea. I respect that he was successful on achieving his vision ... but nah it's an eye sore for me.
Great review Eric. Frank Gehry's work is truly inspiring. However, in his interview with La Phil on the Walt Disney Concert Hall [ ruclips.net/video/ur1qbB5tOkA/видео.html ], Frank Gehry says that he always designs from the 'inside out' yet on the documentary on sketches of Frank Gehry we clearly see him using a physical model to navigate through his art particularly that part where he 'corrugates' a facade which is basically designing from the 'outside in'. Give your thoughts on this please.
Enrolling here helps to support the channel (at no cost to you): thirtybyforty.com/gehry-masterclass
Cheers...!

cheers my friend...when you get around to it I think it does reveal another dimension to his practice...
Best channel for this kinda content, I’m doing bachelors in architecture:), btw love ur setup

appreciate your support...
I love Frank Ghary he always remind me that nothing is impossible
I worked construction management at the Princeton university Lewis library by gehry. Stunning building at the end but - guttering?, feng Shui?

thanks for posting this...i would really love to hear him speak about his residential projects
As an artist, i would love to learn more about architecture and how i apply art to architecture. (i know this is an old vid but i love your review)

I always think giorgio de chirico in relation to Barragan.

Would you recommend for a 1st year student Trying to tide over summer break?
William Mcmeekin oh yes this what I also want ..
Cheers...
Does this course helps / inspires people, who is passionate about architecture ?
Will it helps us to think like an Architect ?
Yes +Vrend Viz, I think it will give you a window into how he approaches solving problems and it's a nice mix of practical and theoretical too. Check out my playlist (How to Think Like an Architect) too: ruclips.net/p/PLuJj3iQpiK3squltn2Z721UR8JXkU9s6w
30X40 Design Workshop
Thanks Mr. Eric,
I'm a great follower of your channel and your website,
your advice, sketches are always an inspiration.
I'm very passionate about architecture, 32 yrs old and currently working in Dubai as an architectural draftsman since March 2008
i'd appreciate if you could help me or advise "how to become an licensed architect"
to be frank, my educational qualification is Very bad (only till 10th grade) i went to learn draftsman civil after my school days instead of colleges,
but i have a great experience in the architectural field, also i'm very good in softwares such as AutoCAD, 3ds max and vray
I know it's a hard to become an architecture
but there's always a WAY to reach every goal,
Your valuable reply is highly appreciated..
Thank you so much, for all this videos you have been posting. I'm from Brazil, by the way. Just to let you know ;-)
I would really like to enroll in to this Masterclass , because i really passionate about his design principle about movement or fluidity. The only thing that is bothering me right now is the cost of this course.... sigh
education is never a bad investment...
thanks for the video, i´ll eventually take it for sure
😂 Do you have a video of book recommendations?
of course, here it is: ruclips.net/video/B-_QtKl5IkU/видео.html
Awesome! Thank you so much!
looks interesting is it only 90 for all master class or just frank
that's per class...so frank's is $90
...cheers...
Thanks for the review, I'll take it. what other courses like this could you recommend?
Hello, what is the grey item by your left hand?
Can you take this class even though you don't have any background in architecture? Thanks.
certainly...like any masterclass parts of it will focus on the general concepts and routines while other parts will be understood by professionals with years of experience. this class has a good balance.
Has anyone got a one on one crit session with him yet? Hows it like?
Do you know any other masterclasses , or classes to follow online ?

I want to enroll. I'm going to have to find a way to make a lot of hard cash.
I understand...keep at it...!
whats this mavic pro png insert? kk great channel man!
I am most certainly doing it.
fantastic...enjoy...!
No doubt, no more "Gehrys" are needed in the world. New paths are needed, new directions based on other ideas. I welcome this new delivery, colleague. A cordial greeting
hello my friend...good hearing from you...cheers...
As I said before, you do great videos and they a good to watch.
What is your island?
Yes sir i will take a look
Love your content. Thank you.
I like to watch more your video I’ve learn everyday.
(initially I was pressed to study medicine but did not go down that path)
And I guess, all this time I was, and still, searching for something that would make me love and enjoy architecture more than I do (this is important to me if I want to make architecture the career of my life). Taking History of Architecture helped a lot, though. So now I'm looking out of the scope of university material to help me even more with that.
Anyways that was long, I just want to thank your for this honest video, now I have the courage to take the class. :)
glad to help...enrolling via the link in the video helps support the channel (at no extra cost to you)...cheers...
thank you for the review. I'm planning to enroll soon. Love your channel its a big help.

I hope in the near future i will be able to do it, i am getting a lot from you and I would like to meet you one day, and just sit and talk to you one on one. Thank you for what you are doing.
Thank you! More power 30x40 Workshop! This was really helpful!

HI ! In the next video can you put the French subtitles if is possible !? Great video ;)
always looking for volunteers for subtitles...are you interested in translating?
30X40 Design Workshop I am not interested in translating but if someone could do it would be great
I would be interested, but Frank Gehry's work is not my cup of tea.
I respect that he was successful on achieving his vision ... but nah it's an eye sore for me.
I hope masterclass get a classical architect to do a course.
Thansk for the Review
Great review Eric. Frank Gehry's work is truly inspiring. However, in his interview with La Phil on the Walt Disney Concert Hall [ ruclips.net/video/ur1qbB5tOkA/видео.html ], Frank Gehry says that he always designs from the 'inside out' yet on the documentary on sketches of Frank Gehry we clearly see him using a physical model to navigate through his art particularly that part where he 'corrugates' a facade which is basically designing from the 'outside in'. Give your thoughts on this please.
I think you could contact to someone to subtitle your videos for the latin american visitors
always looking for volunteers...are you interested in translating?
30X40 Design Workshop , Its a great oportunity but i'm not able to translate, i'm learning english :/
i ca do it. If u want i can do it for you. I´m living in Barcelona , looking for something like this to do.
u can find me at FCB
Who else got Frank Gehry sponsored video in this video haha
5 people huh...? What if I don't meet people? What if I'm a hermit?
Then you're 100 of what you are... Am I wrong ?
Here's the problem with 'masterclass' courses. They're well advertised substitute to pick up a book
Thanks
啥麼職業要花很多錢?且還得不到尊重?
❤️❤️❤️
waooooh amazin video
+1

Thanks for that post: I will not enrol as I don't see the value for money factor.
For me, it was a small sum to invest in some professional mentoring. And, if you have a business, it's an education write-off.
❤❤
