Production choice - it's not a quality issue it's a choice they've made to go for that tape saturated late 70's / early 80's punchy sound. I find it much better than if they'd done a Taylor Swift crystal clear production on it

That guitar sounds horrible
It's supposed to sound fuzzy in the verses. So there's a contrast with the fuller sound of the chorus.
