  • See this excellent oxy/propane gas torch set being used with some new special nozzles. These Nozzles have been made and formulated to flow at the same rate as acetylene versions. Also the nozzle has been designed so that it is not too large that it could obscure the work.

    Nice bit of kit, I used to do some oxyacetylene welding when arc (stick) welding wasn't suitable for small repair jobs - you still can braze, solder and bronze weld though with oxypropane... Have fun!

    Nice use of the small jam jar. :)
    Aside from the lighter comment that someone else mentioned, for switching off you can just turn the fuel off first and then the oxy (unless sustained backfire in which it would be oxy first).

    Seems like a nice little unit for the home shop. Do you plan on getting a cutting rig? Also, some friendly advice, when shutting down turn the fuel off first then the o2 after, this will prevent the chance of flashback.
    Cheers

      Hi Rick Thanks, no I don't plan getting a a cutting rig yet as I heard they use a lot of gas. I have my plasma cutter anyway
      People keep saying different things on shutting down. And it makes a bang if I do it the other way. I do have flashback arrestors on both gas and oxy as well. I tend to decrease each until they have nearly stopped then turn off the oxy, so as not to cause a large gas flame. What are your thoughts on this?

    I thought you were using oxygen acetylene? I weld with O2 + C2H2 Which is easier than TIG for fine work. 0.5 steel sheet you need a number1 nozzle, 0.7 number 2, 1mm number 3, and 1.5 up you need a number 5.

    Hi Steve thanks for the video. I have three questions. Q1 was the torch advertised as a propane/oxy torch or as an acetylene/oxy torch? Q2 what’s the regulator that you have on the propane cylinder, how many Bar? and Q3 what’s it like with as number 1 nozzle?
    I’ve just purchased a MAPP Gas and Rent free 2 Ltr oxy bottle kit form Flametech (flametech Lite brazing kit) for £410 April 2023 which is expensive but I couldn’t find any other complete rent free solution as an alternative to acetylene. On reflection had I have seen your video before I would have looked more at the propane oxy option. For anyone looking at the Flametech option (refrigeration engineers) be aware that the rent free oxy bottle is from GCE Gas Control Equipment company and the have very little coverage in Wales where I am. I have a 4 hour round trip to replace the oxy and they won’t deliver rent free; you have to collect. The Mapp gas/oxy is almost as good as oxyacetylene, I just wanted something a bit better than the Sievert jeweller’s propane torch that I have been using. If you could answer the 3 questions that would be great Steve. Regards . . . Andy

    Hi I am just building a oxy propane set up, I was concerned that I have not got regulator indicator valves on my propane tank. I noticed you have one on oxygen, but like my set up you don't seem to have gauges on your propane. Have you found any problems? I have not lit my set up yet but if , like you, I can not have any gauges I won't worry so much. Any info will be much ly appreciated.

    • @felixthecat265
      @felixthecat265 5 месяцев назад

      You do need a gauge on the low pressure side of an adjustable propane regulator to set the required pressure. Propane is liquid in the cylinder and will only ever give the same pressure until just before you run out of gas so a gauge on the high pressures side is pointless. As you use up the propane gas, more boils off from the liquid to replace it. This is why you need always to keep a propane cylinder vertical when it is in use. If you see a regulator on a propane cylinder with two gauges, it is probably an acetylene one..! Pressure regulators with no gauges are usually non adjustable and set to a fixed pressure for domestic use. You do not want to use one of these with a torch.

    Surely that's silver soldering not brazing? Easyflo flux doesn't go up to brazing spelter temperatures. Brazing is using bronze and is above 900 degrees. But I might be wrong.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  3 года назад

      Hi David no I'm using proper bronze brazing rods. I have got silver solder as well. So far I have used this flux with success, but I have some borax powder to try next.

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  3 года назад +2

      Maybe it isn't for this as I see bronze flux on eBay for acetylene work. I will get some of that to use instead. I did actually think the braze wasn't flowing nice when I used this flux...it must have dissolved! Thanks for pointing this out.

    • @daviddunbar5754
      @daviddunbar5754 3 года назад

      @@SteveJordan No problem. I always used borax for braising but have got away with Tenacity flux too. It's rated to 890 degrees so I assume you can push it.

    Thanks for a very informative video. Question...I have heard that oxygen is expensive and doesn't last long. That has prevented me from doing oxy/anything. What do you think?

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  3 года назад +2

      Hi Well the initial cost of the new oxygen bottle was about £60. When it's empty it will cost about £34 for a refill. Personally I think it will last a long time as I only need to turn the regulator up a fraction to use it.
      I never came across oxy/propane until a couple of months ago, so it is new to me.
      I have had my full 13kg propane cylinders for a few years now using them mainly with large sievert gas torches. I'm actually amazed that they are still going.
      Also I hope to get one soon, but you can buy oxygen concentrators, the ones that people use for health reasons. These can be connected and used for constant use of oxygen, cutting out the need for a bottle. They can be a bit expensive but are gradually coming down in price. You can see them in use on other RUclips channels.
      Regards Steve.

      @@SteveJordan Back in the 1970's I had a friend who ran a junk yard in the US. He used propane instead of acetylene for cutting. He just did a modification on the plumbing. It took a slight bit longer to get up to heat but cut just as good as acetylene.
