- This fascinating filmed "Master Class" showcases the events surrounding 1930s movie star Jeanette MacDonald being featured on a brand new Fall 1952 reality television series, "This is Your Life." Without either the show's host or the TV audience knowing it, the live show served as a personal reunion for MacDonald and her movie co-star Nelson Eddy. They made 8 films together and were off-screen lovers despite marriages to others. But by late 1952 Jeanette and Nelson were estranged both personally and professionally. Jeanette's reactions during the half-hour show are telling, first her nervousness that "he" might actually be there, her looking around trying to acting nonchalant, relaxing when someone else comes onstage - not "him," then sitting tensely once again in anticipation and finally crying when Nelson makes his appearance and holds her hand through the rest of the show. How the show came about and its poignant aftermath was written by Madeline Bayless. The talk was delivered by Linda Tolman. After the show Nelson's appearance is shown again, silent, in slow motion and then with still photos. Anyone who believes these two didn't love each other off-screen should study the footage and the expressions that flit across Jeanette's face as she tries both to hide her girlish adoration of him, and to regain her composure. whole true storyx
Great presentation and the "This Is Your Life" clip and stills are fantastic. It's really an amazing reaction, I caught that little action where she runs her tongue over her bottom lip as she throws her head back and grasps the back of the couch. She was certainly excited to see him! Thanks again for posting.
She also looked like she almost kissed Nelson straight on, but, veered of to the side at the last second since her husband was sitting right there.
Wonderful video Sharon. I have GOT to attend one of your master classes! This surely shows her love for Nelson. A shame that they had to keep their public appearance and not be able to display their true emotions. Anyway, your book does a tremendous job detailing her life. So very glad you met Blossom.
This entire presentation was wonderful; thank you so much.
Nelson e Jeanette , uma dupla belíssima.
read the book "sweethearts" they had a love like no other...
Fantastic to see this video that coincides with the MacEddy meeting story! Wonderful!
Magnetic Duce this!
That was because she thought he was Nelson. Nelson was the only one who ever massaged her feet, Gene never did. That's what Gene wanted the press to believe,
I keep asking myself why not make public their love? It was 1952, the world had changed, people had changed, what were they afraid of, what did they expect from life? What was more important than their love?
Макартизм в Галивуле этому имя. Их совместные фильмы были свободолюбивыми и это заставляло их быть осторожными .
Notice she started breathing pretty heavily as soon as she saw the pictures from her movies with Nelson...

Jeanette MacDonald NDAA Nelson Eddie are on my family tree... We are all cousins... I have to look further into it because I am not sure how far removed. I am wondering, is this a known fact that they may be distant cousins?
You know, I have no idea whether the two were together or not, but I have always found it to be odd (coincidence?) that Gene Raymond always bore a striking resemblance to Nelson Eddy. Not only in looks mind you, but almost in voice. If you happen to see him in the movie Roberta with Astaire and Rogers, there is a point there that his singing voice bears an almost incredible resemblance.

And... Not NDAA! God no!
Is it just me, or are people kind of obsessing over her with Nelson Eddy? If they were gonna get married, wouldn't they have? It seems like she had a good relationship with Gene. I read where he massaged her feet before she died and she told him "I love you" and passed away. I haven't researched much about this and her relationship with NE seems to be a warm one, but, if they were gonna be together and married, they had every chance to be..
