Iv always said, just buy what fits your budget. Yes the torque converter is better but if you want something cheap to bash around your local field on then the clutch will work just fine. It is actually a Continuously Variable Transmission, not a torque converter which is kind of fluid coupling with torque amplifying capability. Transmission do change the output torque (via speed differences between input and output) but the torque converter changes torque in a very different way. A centrifugal clutch has similar function as the torque converter, that is to engage/ disengage engine from transmission. For some reasons some people call CVT a torque converter while it is completely different from an actual torque converter. You can't compare transmission and clutch because they have different functions and are not interchangeable. What you have here is a CVT with a centrifugal clutch.
Thanks! The spring on the rear pulley is when the rpms of the engine increase, one side of the pulley spins about a quarter turn while also going out a bit. This allows the belt to fall into the V shape of the pulley more, changing the gear ratio slightly for more speed.

Need to spot weld that bolt going to the engine. Spot weld it to the dish slide. It's mild steel. Don't worry about taking it off. You can grind it back to factory. Get the Kevlar belt to make it last longer.
Only thing I hate about what a lot of people call a torque converter is that they don't include a motorcycle sprocket mount on the back side of the driven unit to allow for re-powering any kind of motorcycle basically the shaft that the driven unit bolts to needs to be longer and sticks out the back by at least 1 to 2 inches and is made to allow it to have a motorcycle sprocket attached to it and drive the motorcycle's rear wheel.

No, you would have to buy another chain. The torque converter uses the chain coming from the back pulley and the centrifugal clutch uses the chain coming right off the crankshaft where the front pulley is on the torque converter. So, if you wanted to switch you would beed a new chain. Just note that I usually recommend torque converter's over centrifugal clutches so I might not recommend switching them out.
My friend bought a Chinese torque converter for 30 bucks off of Wish. It came in a month later but it still works ever since he ordered it 4 years ago.
I’ve never oiled mine before, but I’d say oil between the pulley and the brass bushing. Just don’t get any on the surface the belt rides or it wont engage.maybe oil the internals of the drive pulley if u want but don’t take my word on this because I’m just not quite sure. Sorry.
Usually small dirt bikes have engines with transmissions built into them. But if you used a predator or a Briggs & Stratton type engine, you could use a torque converter, I just recommend getting an engine that is fit for the bike though.
Alexander Ellis 30 series is for 3/4” shafts and 6.5 hp motors or under. About 200cc 40 series is for 1” shafts and for 9hp engines and up. About 340cc and up

They sell stage one kits on Go Power Sports.com With emissions, the engine will no longer be legal for California, but since go karts are not street legal in the first place you should be just fine. The EPA stuff is for commercial equipment. You might want a muffler if you live in a neighborhood though, so your neighbors dont get mad (also sold on go power sports). For the kit to really shine though, I would also recommend 18 pound valve springs and removing the governor. I'm not quite sure what Gomo is though, sorry. Glad to help.

Can this be done on Trail Wagon sxs John? We have no low end and looking at different ways to improve that. I believe what we have is a standard centrifugal clutch set up like a snow mobile.
Basically u can get the cheap ones on amazon or eBay. They’re all the same, or you can get the gopowersports one which is high quality but double the price. I have the cheap one and it’s been fine but If u really want long lasting get gopowersports.
30 series has a 3/4 inch shaft drive pulley, and 40 series have a 1 inch shaft drive pulley. 30 can handle a modded 6.5 horse, no more, and a 40 series can handle about 20 horsepower.
Is a torque converter more durable? I had a kymco scooter before and it had what I thought was both but it couldn’t idle so I’d have to jump on start and go. Either way I’m doing research because I’d like to build a mini bike. Something with enough pull to get me going closer to 45mph. Great video you are a fantastic teacher.
Thank you a torque converter will let you go a bit faster, but I'm guessing the bad idle might be because of a gummed up carberator. Make sure all the jets are clear and then you can have a regular idle and not have to jump on it. It's normal to want to creep forward a little, but it shouldn't try to run away. The 45 mph you want can be best achieved by putting on a smaller rear sprocket. Hopefully this helped, I try my best to help, but forgive me if I'm wrong.
It will be about 5mph slower on an on road go kart. With an off road go kart, It will burn up and go very slow, because it has too much weight to move around.

I f we fit this in a royal Enfield 1996 taurus diesel engine how will the transmission work because it has a separate gear box so how am I suppose to work on that or just let it sit idle and make it an auto connect like yours could pls elaborate me on that coz here in Asia there no such thing for a diesel engine. Yes, I'm pretty sure you can, but You MIGHT need engine risers if the torque converter hits the frame, (check with the Torque converter on first) thus longer chain. It depends on your frame. You can use 2 pieces of 1" square tube, drill holes, and use longer bolts for risers. With your engine, you'll also need to trim a little off the torque converter backing plate. Also, most importantly check your crankshaft size when buying a torque converter, it might be 3/4" or 1" (measure it) to know what torque converter kit to get
Also 7/8." If it's not one of those three sizes, there will be no torque converter's available. Then, the torque converter will not fit on your particular engine. The predator engines have three-quarter inch which is the most common and they're only 100 bucks at Harbor freight. If you want, you could grind down the shaft until it is three-quarter inch with a grinder while the engine is running, but I would not recommend that

Lont Mac I get around 45, but you have to remember that my kart is a very heavy 2 seater with a roll cage and a 10 tooth gear on the Torque converter and 60 Tooth sprocket. Mine could go faster with a smaller sprocket.

I've had issues with my torque converter belt getting hot and slipping after about an hour of use, do clutches let you go at higher speeds longer? Also its after an hour of hitting top speed
Don't know why people call them torque converters that not what it is it's a CVT style of Transmission better than a centrifugal clutch because a CVT has a wide range of gear ratios available in one system where as a centrifugal clutch only has one gear ratio and and that is determined by the sprockets used that is why scooter's have been using CVT's for decades now they can take a 3.5 to 5 horsepower engine that a 50cc through 150cc engine put it a scooter and a person weighing 200 pounds can get it to 30 to 75 mph but if they use a centrifugal clutch with the same engine's used would only achieve a top speed of 20 mph no matter what they do to improve the engine displacement or performance.
I’m Putting together a go kart with the predator 301 (8hp). What size torque converter do I need? And what will be the main differences in performance compared to using a clutch?
With a 301, it has a 1" crankshaft so you'll need a 40 series torque converter. (Sold at go power sports) With a bigger motor like that clutches will be more expensive and will slip a lot. Sorry for the late response

If I put the black max torque spring in my clutch for my mini bike which I have from the stock is 3100 rpms which is what the new spring is rated at does it matter if the rpms on that spring are way higher than my minu bikes engine rpm which is 1600 because it doesn't seem to have made a huge difference even with a smaller sprocket my dad thinks that spring is too much for the engine to handle so its bit doing it much good for speed or torque because the engine can't handle it can you help out on this?
I'm sorry, I don't know a whole lot about actually changing the springs as I've never done it before. Usually for me, just messing with rear sprocket size is all the tuning I do and the factory springs in my torque converter seem to do just fine. good luck with your project though.
No. Torque isn't going to backfeed into the engine nor is it going to make more torque than it is capable of. All a torque converter does is keep the engine power driving whatever it is driving in the most effective gear ratio. Without it you have a choice of power down low (such as taking off on a minibike from a stop) higher speed with loss of that or some compromise between the 2. This is why a lot of the vintage mopeds that didn't have variated transmissions (some did) relied on pedal assist for starting out and climbing hills

had a seized driver clutch (wouldn't move back in) and didn't know why, this really helped me understand the mechanism.
Yea you can probably take it apart and wire brush any rust that might be in the driver, or you can just buy a new one for cheap on eBay.

It can be 420 or 35. I have 420, but look for a torque converter that has both a 420 and 35 When you buy it.

Any Honda 6.5 horsepower clone should work. It might be legal stuff for California.
I think you are right about jetting the carb. Still put it in though, otherwise it will run badly.

This will be way too weak for a sxs. I would try just lowering the gear ratio.

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can, but You MIGHT need engine risers if the torque converter hits the frame, (check with the Torque converter on first) thus longer chain. It depends on your frame. You can use 2 pieces of 1" square tube, drill holes, and use longer bolts for risers. With your engine, you'll also need to trim a little off the torque converter backing plate. You can do it with a grinder or big file. Grinders are $15 at harbor freight and are a great tool. (shown in video) Cars and cameras did a video:

Also, most importantly check your crankshaft size when buying a torque converter, it might be 3/4" or 1" (measure it) to know what torque converter kit to get
Also 7/8." If it's not one of those three sizes, there will be no torque converter's available. Then, the torque converter will not fit on your particular engine. The predator engines have three-quarter inch which is the most common and they're only 100 bucks at Harbor freight. If you want, you could grind down the shaft until it is three-quarter inch with a grinder while the engine is running, but I would not recommend that
What size engine and will this work for a bicycle setup
Mine is a 212cc engine. This won't fit a bicycle. However, They do sell complete motorized bike kits. This will bolt right on.

Lont Mac I get around 45, but you have to remember that my kart is a very heavy 2 seater with a roll cage and a 10 tooth gear on the Torque converter and 60 Tooth sprocket. Mine could go faster with a smaller sprocket.

I've had issues with my torque converter belt getting hot and slipping after about an hour of use, do clutches let you go at higher speeds longer? Also its after an hour of hitting top speed
Clutches tend to get hotter and slippery more. If you are running a cover over the torque converter, take it off for airflow and cooling

Don't know why people call them torque converters that not what it is it's a CVT style of Transmission better than a centrifugal clutch because a CVT has a wide range of gear ratios available in one system where as a centrifugal clutch only has one gear ratio and and that is determined by the sprockets used that is why scooter's have been using CVT's for decades now they can take a 3.5 to 5 horsepower engine that a 50cc through 150cc engine put it a scooter and a person weighing 200 pounds can get it to 30 to 75 mph but if they use a centrifugal clutch with the same engine's used would only achieve a top speed of 20 mph no matter what they do to improve the engine displacement or performance.

Putting together a go kart with the predator 301 (8hp). What size torque converter do I need? And what will be the main differences in performance compared to using a clutch?
With a 301, it has a 1" crankshaft so you'll need a 40 series torque converter. (Sold at go power sports) With a bigger motor like that clutches will be more expensive and will slip a lot. Sorry for the late response

Question? If I put the black max torque spring in my clutch for my mini bike which I have from the stock is 3100 rpms which is what the new spring is rated at does it matter if the rpms on that spring are way higher than my minu bikes engine rpm which is 1600 because it doesn't seem to have made a huge difference even with a smaller sprocket my dad thinks that spring is too much for the engine to handle so its bit doing it much good for speed or torque because the engine can't handle it can you help out on this?
I'm sorry, I don't know a whole lot about actually changing the springs as I've never done it before. Usually for me, just messing with rear sprocket size is all the tuning I do and the factory springs in my torque converter seem to do just fine. good luck with your project though.

No. Torque isn't going to backfeed into the engine nor is it going to make more torque than it is capable of. All a torque converter does is keep the engine power driving whatever it is driving in the most effective gear ratio. Without it you have a choice of power down low (such as taking off on a minibike from a stop) higher speed with loss of that or some compromise between the 2. This is why a lot of the vintage mopeds that didn't have variated transmissions (some did) relied on pedal assist for starting out and climbing hills
