Just done a marathon of all your vlogs I live in Scotland, I have 4 kids, 2 chickens a cat and we are self sufficient in fruit and veg. What I love about these vlogs is you can see the passion you have for what you do, you also do a lot of work yourself and show appreciation for your employees and land owners love everything you stand for and completely agree with your thoughts on culture change and laws putting fear in to people....my kids and I wanted chickens....our local council class them as "live stock" after quite a debate we were allowed to keep them 😆 no fear live as you wish......love what you do, love everything you stand for much respect 👍
An alternative for keeping an eye on field/greenhouse temperatures are those indoor/outdoor thermometers they sell at Canadian tire. They come with one module to put outside ( or in your greenhouse/tunnel ) and one indoor station. Some comes with max/min temp memory and also alarms . I use one for my watermelon tunnel.
I am currently building a micro greens enclosure using duel zone and door mini wine fridge, using Arduino with DHT 22 sensors, controlling intake, exhaust fans and lighting and heating elements :)
Hi Curtis, maybe you have mentioned and I have just missed it...but what is the name of these caterpillar tunnels? And where to buy them? Are these from FarmersFriend with all the upgrades?
Curtis, I'm working with a Greenhouse manufacturer in Clinton NC to make some custom kits for us. One thing we don't quite understand is how the edges of the top are secured along the sides. Obviously we could wire-lock it but we are trying to keep costs below $1k for 19'X100'. It's windy down here by the coast (Wilmington, NC) so whatever way we do it is going to have to be stout enough that wind doesn't get under the edges.
Chas, forgive me for getting ahead of myself on price. I think it's going to be more in the 1500 range. We added a mister kit running up the center purlin- which is actually just conduit- and some wire-locking which has pushed us up a bit. Still a work in progress but we are installing the first one next week. Check back with me. I have some other folks nearby interested as well. stephen.douglass@turnerfamilyfarms.com
I had a question about fertilizing through Sunbelt Ground Covers. I'm new to gardening. So after i prep my soil and install the ground cover and plant my garden, how do i go about fertilizing once the cover is installed? I'm assuming the fertilizer wont go through the cover. Or do i fertilize only once a season, before i install them. I'm confused about this.
Great video. I have a question/idea for the next video: how to fight mouse issue in Green houses/tunnels? I'm setting traps, catching them, but it seems that you never will catch them all. Recently planted the whole bunch of lettuce in cells - 1 week after - all gone - eaten by hungry in early spring mice... The same issue happened last year with seedlings on the tables - were badly damaged by mice. Thank you!
Hopefully this post goes through.... I am wondering why you say to only use the black oil sunflower seeds for microgreens? When I have seen others using the striped seed with good success. Thanks for your time and troubles to help others learn the trade.
Bit of splitting hairs here....but this is a high tunnel. Caterpillar tunnels are a type of high tunnel where instead of an end wall, the ends are pinched and pulled taught at a single ground stake bringing the covering to a point like the body of a caterpillar
Hey Mr Stone, love the book and the videos. A question for you or anyone else out there.. I’m looking for pack/child carrier that is suitable for “light work on the farm or in the garden. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi Curtis, great video. Is it ideal to have Caterpillar tunnels over all of your crops? Also, is it a good idea to throw something like 30% shade cloth on the caterpillar tunnels instead of poly for the summer in a place like Florida?
Hey Curtis not sure if it's just me but the tabs on your "urban farmer" Web page buy, resources an connect do work? And also what's the difference between the US and Canadian book? I tried once before and understand that I can't purchase your paperback in Australia so would like the digital. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask. Regards
Hi Curtis, thanks for the amazing content! Im a big fan, I have a video request/suggestion, can you talk about strategies to deal with possible crop contamination of pathogens like e.coli or any of those, we are using well rotted manure of a number from different farm animals (cows, sheep, horses, chickens and one pig) as fert and we have some concerns, the plot is also right next to the compost pile.. anyway we are investigating with using antimicrobial agent in bubbler step. As well as sending plant tissue to lab once in a while. Are we over worring? Any advice ? Thanks so much!
I just realized youtube unsubscribed me from your channel a few months ago. Maybe that's why I've been so depressed; from missing your videos. I've got a lot of catching up to do. Wish me luck!
I think velcro would be stronger than the poly, maybe just a few spots vs strips magnets could be a hassle to line up. Honestly i think the zippers would do better if the poly was folded over, but i dont have experience so, grain of sand
hotdroper I think the value is in the connectivity and the app. Data logging and integrating that into reports is also something interesting that could be done with it, has some good potential for piggybacking off that data with an IPM protocol for getting ahead of pests.
A sort of improvement for the zipper is to add velcro. Zippers will wear out fast if you do not order heavy duty, as will velcro in the dust. Only use the velcro in windy conditions otherwise you will have extra work everytime you open it up. The problem with zippers is that they are not designed for 90 degree forces of the magnitude the wind produces. You are then left with coping mechanisms or replacing the whole end with a wooden frame with regular doors as in a normal greenhouse. If you want to go real Illuminati you can dig cooling tunnels under ground and vent the greenhouses that way www.new-learn.info/packages/clear/thermal/buildings/passive_system/earth_air_tunnel.html Amory Lovins at the Rocky Mountain institute have done some similar installations throughout the years, for schools and public buildings.
Is there no good way out of living & farming so plastic-dependantly? It all ends up as Landfill in the bosom of dear lady earth....but we have a cash-centric lifestyle, don't we? Sad ...so sad.
Hi Curtis Re the temp monitoring I have reciently been searching for switches around my home for turning lights and The kettle , washing machine and other electrical stuff I have a google home mini but these ideas I am about to offer also work with android smart ph and Apple as well Sonoff Switches for the switches very reasonable pricing First check out www.itead.cc/sonoff-wifi-wireless-switch.html Then download the App IFTTT from Google Play Store or Apple equivelent and go and discover what the App is about here ifttt.com/discover between the Sonoff switches, IfTTT and the temp sensors I think you will find it will cover everything you need and then some ... you can set up many applets to do many different tasks you need Tony

i love your tunnels. I will build in my land. thanks for your sharing.
I love them too! Any greenhouse is a good one. Keep growing your produce all year. Good luck!

How Awesome! Wish I could have joined you! Hopefully, there will be a next time!
What is size of your tunnel length, breath, height and size of your tunnel pipe
I am currently building a micro greens enclosure using duel zone and door mini wine fridge, using Arduino with DHT 22 sensors, controlling intake, exhaust fans and lighting and heating elements :)
May i know the width of those tunnels pls. Thank you.
I own my land and I will be putting this type of greenhouse on it. Makes sense all around. That was sweet
What are the louvre vents installed directly into the plastic? Are they passive? I have been looking for something like those!
In the UK here it's -4 at the moment.. our tunnel needs no shade... Lol
Hi Curtis, maybe you have mentioned and I have just missed it...but what is the name of these caterpillar tunnels? And where to buy them? Are these from FarmersFriend with all the upgrades?
I suggest velcro versus a zipper for the end walls
curtis, if youre gonna build a catterpillar tunnel on your backyard, how far spacing would you go from a 6ft wood fence?
Very nice new technology of monitoring the farm!
velcro or loop and toggle fasteners might work too.
At 4:40 He lifts a film off the tomatoes, what is that called please?
Rob S row covers

Might be a cheap alternative your looking for. Uses pvc to hold down sides instead of wiggle wire.
Slick. Thank you.
Hi there, I'm also in NC. I'm interested to know who you worked with and how it's going building your tunnel for under $1k. Thanks for any updates!

Thanks, Ian. Will do!
Great. Cost For 1 Caterpillar Tunnel ?.
i think permanent solid end walls is best. you have this right curtis?

However zips are better at keeping insects out so in summary I suggest looking at the design of a camping tent
We have seven acres on manitoulin. Would you like to come visit
OH man i wanted to go!!! completely forgot about this!!! yes its a days drive but man I would of still gone #kicking myself #facepalm # crying inside,
Hi Curtis, great video. Is it ideal to have Caterpillar tunnels over all of your crops? Also, is it a good idea to throw something like 30% shade cloth on the caterpillar tunnels instead of poly for the summer in a place like Florida?
I cant say I have ever heard them called Caterpillar tunnels. I have only ever heard the names Polly Tunnel and Hoop Tunnel.
What's the model and make of that temperature sensor? Something I would like to get. Thanks!
"TEMP STICK" from Ideal Sciences Company
idealsciences.com/
hi sir, how wide are those tunnels? thank you
They are probably 14 foot wide. Some of them are 16 foot wide.

US is book is for Americans.
No difference just shipping.

Caterpillar tunels only works if there is no possible wind though .
They work here with high winds.
I just realized youtube unsubscribed me from your channel a few months ago. Maybe that's why I've been so depressed; from missing your videos. I've got a lot of catching up to do. Wish me luck!
That's weird and not the first time I've heard this.
Hi Curtis here in Chile I have a little farm and I'm interested on use these kind of tunnels, How much cost?
Israel Diaz you could build it by yourself it'll be much cheaper
Great video!
this is really interesting.
Thats so dope!!!!!
I would recommend velcro instead of a zipper. Great video, thank you.
or magnets
I think velcro would be stronger than the poly, maybe just a few spots vs strips magnets could be a hassle to line up. Honestly i think the zippers would do better if the poly was folded over, but i dont have experience so, grain of sand
Just glue neodymium mags they will work great I am speaking from experience next best is folding the plastic
Velcro wears to fast
And zipper
are you on instagram?
Charm.me.Charlie yes he is. Greencityacres
nice
haha, I wonder if someone has run off with the idea of making a preemptive plant disease scanner star trek style
Maybe that’s your calling to make it.
At $150 a pop you really need to sell a lot of vegetables to cover the cost of that Temp Stick, seems like its not a good value

Sonoff Switches for the switches very reasonable pricing
First check out www.itead.cc/sonoff-wifi-wireless-switch.html
Then download the App IFTTT from Google Play Store or Apple equivelent
and go and discover what the App is about here
ifttt.com/discover
