My mam used to run the Anchor Fish Bar for over thirty years - grew up in the flat above the shop & helped out with all the spud prep etc when I was a pup. Lots of memories from the days when the queues were half a mile long in the late 70s & early 80s & chucking out from the pub time late on Fri & Sat night - the good, the bad & the ugly! A true Barrow Island community institution. There were tears shed by the locals when mam decided to call it a day. Glad it’s still going great guns..

We’ve got a place like this near us, its a Chinese takeaway and a fish n chip shop, its one of the best in the area and a lot of people go just for the fish n chips!

When I lived in Bristol I had a Chinese chippy near me. It was run by a big woman with a ferocious temper. If you went in and you didn't order Chinese, the woman used to go out the back and shout while she threw things about, then she'd send her husband out to serve and he didn't speak a word of English! How anyone ever got served is a miracle.
Two of my local chip shops were run by Chinese people and they were both really good. On one occasion, I left an online review to say it was literally the best fish and chips I'd ever had! I had haddock and it was delicious! The fish was really tasty and succulent and the batter, light and crisp. Sadly, neither shops are there now. After decades, it was the lockdown that ended them.
Our local chippie charges £9.10 for fish & chips, they don’t do mushy peas, thank God yuck. A can of pop is £1.20, so £10.30 all in. Your Chinese fish and chips look delicious and a real bargain. Loved the video,keep up the good work 👍🏻🏴
That's a massive piece of fish, yum. When I got fish & chips from a Chinese chippy, the chips were fried twice. Behind the counter there was a large stainless steel tray loaded with part-fried chips. You placed your order and the assistant got a portion from the tray and fried them for 2 or 3 minutes. They were delicious. The price you paid yesterday was very good value. I pay £9 without peas or a drink. With so many people watching your channel nowadays, and with the various fish & chip reviews you have done, maybe chippies up and down the country are experiencing an uptick in trade! They're gonna be saying, thank God for Gareth!
Chinese are very very good at fish and chips. When I was a kid, we used to always go to Scarborough for our holidays and one year we stayed in a holiday flat near to a Chinese chippy, and they were the best any of us have ever had. I keep meaning to go back and see if it is still there (even though I’m 51 now lol), who knows, with fish and chips that good they may well still be going lol 😂
Ohhhh me too, we always stayed at Filey for a week ... we used to have a day out to Scarborough and a day out to Whitby and go to the Magpie for fish and chips or if we were flush we’d go upstairs and get plaice with cream and tarragon sauce....yum. 🥰
Most Chinese or foreign cooks know how to cook the best flavoured and trandintional food's, but most cook to our western tastes, there food's are amazing and for us we still enjoy everything we get served, though respect to these guy's they know how to cook, remember they where brought up on this got to love there culture. 😀

A large cod and medium chips cost me £10.80 last night from my favourite chippy down here in Bognor - Ocean Fish Bar on Hawthorn Rd. which I've been going to since 1984. Have to admit, even their small portions of chips are an entire plateful and even a half portion of chips isn't far off the small. They really don't skimp on the chips.
Yummy. They looked delicious! You carry on munching and lip smacking. At least we can hear when something should be crunchy! I've never had fish and chips from a Chinese takeaway Gareth , I'm gonna try that . I like the Chinese batter and that was pretty thick fish for haddock , that's the best fish for it . I think you were wise avoiding the extra wrapping as it causes the chips to steam soft . Another quality vid from a quality bloke , you're the reviewer to the common man . Take it easy 👍

A large piece of cod on its own at my local is £9.40, small chips £4. The north is looking very tempting, you can get a decent meal for under a tenner and still buy a house for 50K
Back in 1971 when I was playing keyboards in a 3 piece band at week ends we'd call in after midnight all of us in the Roadie's van, starving and pick up from a Chinese take away the most fabulous fish and chips, crisp batter not tasting of oil - lovely white chunky cod like the Haddock you see here. But all of us band members ended up with upset stomachs (the squits as we called it!) but we were devils for punishment and repeated this whenever we'd finished a gig in that NE London area north of Edmonton. We never knew why they caused gastric disturbance. It wasn't food poisoning and the oil was certainly not stale or we'd have tasted that. But those Chinese chefs knew a thing or two about cooking fresh fish and batter too.
We have a cracking little Chinese in our village, traditional 1970s fare, that does the best and cheapest fish and chips for miles around. The top priced chippies, and I mean c£4.80 for a bag of chips and £9.00 for a medium fish, nearby seem content in trying to flog the nastiest sausage, pies, gravy, curry sauce,peas etc they can find. I know they are feeling the pressure with their bills but they just aren't the same cheap and tasty option, with a queue outside, that I grew up with.

Looks lovely that I tend to ask for lightly battered as the batter can be stodgy at times from some places but going off how crispy that was looks best to stick to normal. Suppose if you were to take home and it had been steaming away in the wrapper then it would be stodgy. Such an etiquette regarding a good fish and chip experience!

Local chippy to me here in Carlisle charges the following £8.10 for Small Haddock alone, Small Chips £2.40, Small Peas £1.50, Can of Pop £1.50 (£13.40) £10.40 for Regular Haddock, Regular £4.25, Regular Peas £2.20, Can of Pop £1.50 (£18.35) Days have gone now where Fish and Chips was an affordable meal.... The Chinese across town however does a great Fish & Chips (Large Skinless Haddock & wedge of Lemon) for £8.50. Feeds me and the Wife that does.
Hi Gareth. Barrow still looks good. I was there in the early 70s to visit a WOODEN submarine. The boat was made of wood so that things could be altered easily. Any worker caught smoking was SACKED. Hi Gareth from Spain. Made my mouth water. The reason the batter has a bit of thickness is to protect the fish from the seering heat of the oil so that it is still juicy and not frizzled. As you know, my nearest fish and chips are a round trip of over 400 km away. I don't think you did too badly for value given the fact that fish is more expensive.
Gareth, that batter sounded really crispy for all that it was as pale in colour as you showed it. Made me wonder if it was mixed with a light beer or maybe they use a bottle of fizzy water like the Japanese Tempura batter is made (it makes the batter very thin, light and crispy).
There was some crunch of that batter,the fish and chips looked great value, £1.30 for a Diet Coke is ridiculous but the fish and chips made up, thank you for taking the time another good review❤

Made me smile as my bigoted stepfather refused to eat Chinese takeaway made food. One day he felt he had to tell me about somebody at work, that had bought him some chips. Without telling him they were "Chinese" until after he ate them. He was so amazed that they were "as good as real chips", that he just had to tell me about it.

Mmmmmmm... I love chinese chips, i think they use the same oil to fry them as they do for the chinese food, it gives them a nice flavour, and so so good with chinese curry sauce! Yours looked delicious, and such good value, no grey bits in there and a really good portion.

Ah, this is an interesting one… F&C from a Chinese/Turkish takeaway can be a revelation. £7 ? Wow, that’s great value. For many years I’ve enjoyed a large Haddock at a Turkish place in Scotland where the food is immaculately presented. The fillet is so large that it fills the box it is served in. Always fresh, it’s a taste treat and costs £6.50. Although you are wise not to let your local seagull population tuck in, do you have to get your car interior valeted ?!

Perth western Australia...Finally a chippy that looks better than my local... The pease at my local are basically soup. And those chips look better too. But there a chippy near rockingham railway station that beats this one and my local. Its behind the McDonalds about 1.5km south of the station.... I was there a few years ago and a nz moari ordered 20 dollars migt have been 10 dollars (10 or 5 quid) of chips server cooked and wrapped the package and the customer remarked " wow that's a lot" server responded " wait I have to wrap the other half of your order
When out and about in our county I quite like the Kingfisher in Keswick for fish n chips either upstairs in the cafe or take away. Mind you there are several eating places in that town that we frequent. I prefer thin batter.
Gareth our local chippy does a small fish and chips for £3!!! I kid you not, the best chippy fish I have tasted. Not sure how they make money on them as they're pretty big. Most the chippy's by me are Chinese. Most are really good.
There are a couple of Chinese takeaways that are also a chippy in Perthshire Scotland. I’ve only drove past in shock reading the sign but to be fair, there’s always a queue outside. I’ll be trying it out next time after seeing this 👍🏻
As you can see British fish and chips really interest us . We have tried Henley ( as posted before) Bourne end the same maybe worse Both Chinese and tasted like chicken Chau min. I can recommend the chippy in Goring on Thames, just up the road from the river Wonderful. In fact the best we have had. Because we live in Asia fish and chips are always a highlight of our holiday.

Hi Gareth. Barrow still looks good. I was there in the early 70s to visit a WOODEN submarine. The boat was made of wood so that things could be altered easily. Any worker caught smoking was SACKED. It was a good trip from Gosport where I was on the Submarine course. Keep up the videos they are always good and your honest opinions are worth listening to. Best wishes.

Hi Gareth from Spain. Made my mouth water. The reason the batter has a bit of thickness is to protect the fish from the seering heat of the oil so that it is still juicy and not frizzled. As you know, my nearest fish and chips are a round trip of over 400 km away. I don't think you did too badly for value given the fact that fish is more expensive.

Gareth, that batter sounded really crispy for all that it was as pale in colour as you showed it. Made me wonder if it was mixed with a light beer or maybe they use a bottle of fizzy water like the Japanese Tempura batter is made (it makes the batter very thin, light and crispy).

sometimes it can just be a clean fryer that makes all the difference to the batter colour.
I think it looks pale as most add a bit of yellow food colouring to make the batter more appealing. Beer does add a great flavor.
It looked a bit like the batter, that they put on the chicken balls/sweet and sour.
i loved fish and chips from the chinese in my younger years,that looks a good feed.

Made me smile as my bigoted stepfather refused to eat Chinese takeaway made food. One day he felt he had to tell me about somebody at work, that had bought him some chips. Without telling him they were "Chinese" until after he ate them. He was so amazed that they were "as good as real chips", that he just had to tell me about it.

Mmmmmmm... I love chinese chips, i think they use the same oil to fry them as they do for the chinese food, it gives them a nice flavour, and so so good with chinese curry sauce! Yours looked delicious, and such good value, no grey bits in there and a really good portion.

That portion of Fish and Chips looks absolutely delish! And what a bargain at £9.30. At my local, chips cost £3.50 and there is enough to feed a family of four, sadly they don't do small portions for less.

Ah, this is an interesting one… F&C from a Chinese/Turkish takeaway can be a revelation. £7 ? Wow, that’s great value.
For many years I’ve enjoyed a large Haddock at a Turkish place in Scotland where the food is immaculately presented.
The fillet is so large that it fills the box it is served in. Always fresh, it’s a taste treat and costs £6.50.
Although you are wise not to let your local seagull population tuck in, do you have to get your car interior valeted ?!

in 80s at high school we would to a chippy that was Chinese. chips and fish cake or battered savaloy. they had pickled onions and eggs too
Perth western Australia...Finally a chippy that looks better than my local... The pease at my local are basically soup. And those chips look better too. But there a chippy near rockingham railway station that beats this one and my local. Its behind the McDonalds about 1.5km south of the station.... I was there a few years ago and a nz moari ordered 20 dollars migt have been 10 dollars (10 or 5 quid) of chips server cooked and wrapped the package and the customer remarked " wow that's a lot" server responded " wait I have to wrap the other half of your order

When out and about in our county I quite like the Kingfisher in Keswick for fish n chips either upstairs in the cafe or take away. Mind you there are several eating places in that town that we frequent. I prefer thin batter.

Gareth our local chippy does a small fish and chips for £3!!! I kid you not, the best chippy fish I have tasted. Not sure how they make money on them as they're pretty big. Most the chippy's by me are Chinese. Most are really good.

There are a couple of Chinese takeaways that are also a chippy in Perthshire Scotland. I’ve only drove past in shock reading the sign but to be fair, there’s always a queue outside. I’ll be trying it out next time after seeing this 👍🏻

As you can see British fish and chips really interest us . We have tried Henley ( as posted before) Bourne end the same maybe worse

I can recommend the chippy in Goring on Thames, just up the road from the river
Wonderful. In fact the best we have had.
Because we live in Asia fish and chips are always a highlight of our holiday.
