Wonderful History. Reminds me of the Ruth Hartley Mosley Home....A Black Woman that was the first registered Nurse in Georgia and Philanthropist. Her home is still used as a educational center after she donated the home in a trust. In fact we just filmed one of my Independent films there. The local news came to interview our film project there. It's an amazing home with so many precious timed items still filling the home.
Thank you Kathleen Sanders for sharing the story of your grandmother, Ms Katie Johnson Warren. I grew up hearing about Freedman Town and was always fascinated by it. I love history. I love learning history. I would love to see your film /documentary.
Our Black history desperately needs to be talked about more, in the 50s we'd hear from our Grandparents some but not nearly enough, thank you for sharing yours.
There once was a "Freedman's Town" here in Houston, Texas. The area is called Mid-Town. There is an organization that is trying to put the descendants back into that community. Gentrification is a reality😢
My ancestors lived a place called Freetown in south Louisiana. The community built a gate and charged white planters to travel down their road as a shortcut to one of the local sugar cane mills.
Wow this neighborhoods rich Black history has almost been completely erased. Im so fortunate my elders shared some of it with me. This is just one of many stories from Freedmans Town/Uptown
This is needed for our communities ...especially our young people
so many freedmans towns are being lost to urban development here in texas... keep yalls history going
History we all need to know.
Exactly
