Gotta say, Jeff, I’ve been following you for a long time now, and not only has it been really cool to always be learning something from you, but it’s been really cool to see you grow as a drummer yourself. Another great vid. Thanks.
Two biggest game changers for me were accenting my 8th notes and learning to back stick with my left hand to add those tasty notes in between or accents. Snare sound like an SLP super aluminum. Or maybe a newer variation. One of my favorites.
I really have to point out the fact that you are playing all of this with the shoulder of your stick. You can re-do all the same stuff but by using the tip of the stick on the top of the hi-hats, the sound become thin and different. Playing with the tip, on the top of the hi-hats, is a game changer in studio for quiet and musical situation, instead of that thicker sound when you hit on the side. I play the dual motion with shoulder/tip, here it's shoulder/shoulder with dynamics. In fact, you did hit the hi-hats with the tip just ONCE in the transition between ''8Th Pulse'' and ''UpBeat-8th-notes'' if you pay attention closely, you will see it and hear the different sound too.
Probably a dumb question.. but when accenting, are you alternating between hitting the hi-hat with the shoulder and the tip of the drumsticks? Or alternating between heavy and softer hits? I just started drumming less than a month ago, so I’m new to all the cool stuff haha
Your hi-hat sounds very fuzzy….its not sharp we can barely hear you change up some of your patterns if the titles weren’t on the screen. But the sound 👌🏿

It’s a great question! I’m alternating between hitting the edge of the hats with the shoulder of the stick and the top of the hats with the tip.
@@JeffRandallDrumming oh wow that’s awesome, thank you very much for taking the time to reply ❤️
Try both because you will get a different sounding groove from each.@@dalatina911

Sometimes dont play all the hi hat beats, skip and double. Paradiddles and paradiddlediddles help with that.
