  • Watch Lasha Talakhadze +109 at the European Weightlifting Championships 2023 building up to some monstrous lifts. The men's +109 at the European Weightlifting Championships 2023 was extremely exciting, with Georgian Lasha Talakhadze competing against the two Armenians Simon Martirosyan and Varazdat Lalayan. Simon Martirosyan hit a personal best in the clean and jerk, as did Varzdat Lalayan. But could either of them best the great Lasha Talakhadze in front of a home crowd?

Nice relaxed, well-informed English language commentary reminiscent of the feeling one gets while listening to or watching the kind of classic expert commentary that complements a traditional American professional baseball game. A nice contribution to the sport of weightlifting that has been very long in coming! I mention English language, because as a former 70s-era American Olympic lifter who later in life learned to speak and understand the Russian language fluently, I have regularly enjoyed over the years listening to the outstanding Russian language commentaries at the Europeans and Worlds which are invariably extremely well-informed and passionately entertaining. Thanks, guys, for being their English-speaking counterpart and top-notch successor to the nonsensical, poorly informed English language commentaries we were forced to listen to in the old days when the "Wide World of Sports" commentators invariably used to embarrass and bludgeon American weightlifting audiences with the continuum of idiotic comments and remarks that accompanied the World Weightlifting Championships year after year..

@@feliciacoffey6832 Right-O on both counts, Felicia. I took four years of Russian at UConn and Yale back in the late 80s, finally went to Russia in 2012 for a number of weeks. I still get a thrill out of the doors of understanding that learning Russian has opened up for me like in this instance. ( I also understand German; that is a thrill for me as well.) I can tell you that those two Russian commentators that have been doing the Worlds and Europeans for the past few years both speak so articulately with a beautiful Moscow accent and their knowledge and love of the sport and their biographical and statistical accounts of the individual lifters, both past and present, are unsurpassed. Just listen to their reactions sometime even if you don't understand their words. Definitely comparable now, however, is the great job that Seb and Max are doing for all of us in our native English tongue.

I'm typing this during the intermission. What I found so hard to believe was the lifters who bombed out in the Snatch. With no realistic hope of winning, they recklessly opened their Snatch campaigns far too heavy! There was no need whatsoever to do that. Why the hell didn't they just play their own game and run their own race? Even the Bronze medallist opened on a weight that he could build upon. That's the way to do it! Make an opener that you can do even on your worst day, then build upon that up to the weight you want to finish on. Opening so heavy that it takes you three attempts to make your opening weight, then still missing it . .? Why even turn up? You've embarrassed yourself and your country by doing that.
