@@thomasffrench3639 We did in the eighties because it was not so common to sell anime outside of Japan, so they filled Italian TV schedules with cheap (cheap in cost, not always in quality!) anime. Now you have to pay a fair price for anime even outside Japan and TV is in crisis, so it is equal now.
If you want to see more 70s mecha anime I highly recommend watching Zambot 3 (which is one of Tomino's first anime shows and also what started the "KIll em all" icon before Ideon), Tosho Daimos, Voltes V, Casshan, and the Getter Robo franchise (starting with the manga and or the OVAs).
Daitarn 3 is fun but as far as "happier Tomino" goes, Xabungle is EASILY his best attempt at a more comedic show. It still blends perfectly the plot-centered style of his more well-known stuff like Gundam or Ideon with the goofyness of Daitarn, later seen in ZZ Gundam as well. It's personally my favorite non-Gundam Tomino work.
Tomino series that are comedic usually try to be funny while sprinkling in story but as the series goes on they usually get more serious late in the shows run
I've been on a Tomino binge this past year. Daitarn is one of the only 2 left (Xabungle) that I need to watch to complete his works. I put Daitarn on hold for a bit to watch other things but after seeing your review here I might have to go back to it soon. Do you plan on reviewing Zambot 3 anytime soon?
@@bobsamurai Ah I see. I wouldn't mind seeing you ranking his shows from best to worse in a video sometime down the road if possible. I always like to hear your opinion.
@@omegashenron8 thanks. yea i'd like to get to the point where i can do that for most popular directors. lots of anime watching until i get there though lol
Hey I enjoyed your video and if your looking for something like Daitarn 3 your in luck there is another tomino work that is historically funny called Combat Mecha Xabungle it's a Classic it's bit slow from the beginning but it picks up after ep 6 or 7
00:55 that's mostly due to Yoshinori Kanada's work. his talent was recognized in part because of his work on Daitarn and Zambot 3. There's a short clip of Hideaki Anno commenting his work on RUclips; they also worked together on Nausicaa.
If you want a funny Tomino anime, you should give Overman King Gainer a shot. It had me laughing quite alot at certain points (It's premise is even similar to Garzey's Wing lol)
I don't agree Banjo's backstory is just an afterthought: each episode deals with a Meganoid commander and shows what lead them to that path, while the last episode deals with Banjo himself. There are hints that Lord Zauker is actually his father, and so Banjo is fighting a personal war against his own family.
@@HeavyMetal95 Italia 1 is a national channel, but it didn't really broadcast much anime in the 80s. The first anime series aired on Rai (the Italian state tv) and on local channels in the early 80s. Italia 1 has been broadcasting anime for kids from the late 80s, most notably Dragonball
This seems like an anime that would be featured on something like "Anime Hell". But it seems to be a fun watch nontheless, it seems it should've been way shorter for what it tried to go for but it is impressive that they even go out 40 episodes. Sucks there is no dub, would probably be more fun with one, but I'll look into this, among the other stuff. This also looks like if Tomino did something like G Gundam in some ways.

This anime was a hit in Italy. I read they even added the Italian opening in the latest blu ray edition in Japan.
Why does everyone get anime and manga before English speakers?
The italian intro is an absolute banger

I was going to watch every tomino anime I haven’t seen but got hung up on triton of the sea. Started a few eps of zambot. Seems nice
Tomino made plenty of comedy mecha anime, eg, Xabungle, ZZ, L-Gaim, and King Gainer. He typically alternated between tragedies and comedies.
I gotta get on them then lol

@@bobsamurai Zambot 3 is not comedic, you might see it as a "proto-ideon", at least partially
@@frankjaeger2565 It has comedic elements for sure. The ending is very cold though, no tragedies happen, but it still ends sadly.
You might love Xabungle by Tomino

Never seen it, but it's been on my list for a while. For some reason, Gainer's intro song has been stuck in my head all day today
Just watching the clips and it looks so funny.
Yes, this seems way more interesting than Gundam's weary tones...! (No discussion of Comedic X Mecha can skip Yatterman, etc. of course!)
