Nirvana was a great band for the times. This music is a departure from all the over produced carbon copied music of the day. That’s what garage band music is all about. A homegrown, organic, almost amateurish quality to it.I personally really liked the grunge era. It kind of reminds me of the advent of punk rock. It was a much more raw sound not concerned with perfect guitar work or lead vocals but more about achieving a atmosphere showing the discontent of the younger generation. Pretty impressive work I’d say
I definitely see what you are saying. I like to listen to Nirvana from time to time on my mood for that exact reason. However, I do find their lyrics to be a little too simple and repetitive at times. But I see the reason why they went for that.
Something like Nirvana is needed today. Away with auto tune, drum machines etc. Just punk attitude, pop song melodies, hard played instruments and great lyrics.
'Grunge' for the most part was just a continuation of punk, they just rebranded it when it became popular again after the glorious death of hair bands. Other than maybe the first album Nirvana to me was just another Husker Du.
@Simon Davies He didn't say the musicianship was substandard and he's right in that it was more organic than the hair crap from the 80's, not so overly produced and everything being perfect, kind of what most popular music is again today.

This song is a masterpiece, surprised at your takes on this one. Nirvana is deep, especially Kurt's lyrics. Kurt was very introspective and this song is a great example of his use of metaphors and visual style of writing; with themes of control, manipulation and indulging in the demise of his own self-worth.

Not really. By Kobain's own admission, his songs were not deep. In fact, some were written as a kind of middle finger to all of the hero worshipers and fanbois that were popping up at the time lol.
@@bminturn by deep, i mean sure not always, but i don't necessarily mean philosophically or anything like that. i find his writing even when very literal at times has a strong lyrical sensibility and is sometimes undermined by the image they portrayed, their 'raw' sound and how they didn't take themselves seriously in the public eye.
Grunge became a genre during Nirvana's run, but at center they were a punk band. That simplicity (and power therein) is a feature of punk. Kurt brought unique vision and lyrics that changed the game for everyone, forever.
Changed the game forever in that rock music was never as influential on popular culture again after Kurt's death.

I agree with your point. This band was about being true to yourself, having integrity, not covering up things and polishing the music to remove it's rawness. Their music helped provide a way for a generation to question why society wasn't living up to it's ideals.
For Brad: song is pretty much about Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love. Her sign is a Cancer and he’s a Pisces. And there was a heart-shaped box given as a gift. But as someone mentioned on another comment, Cobain often said he wrote lyrics at the last second because he was lazy.

For me, as someone whos been suicidal through many periods of my life (because of brain injuries, ive come to learn recently), I always thought it was talking about how almost useless talking someone out of doing it or telling them how suicide isnt the answer is almost pointless, because in that mindset, even though you really do want help, you know there nothing anyone can say and youre right back where you were the moment they leave. "Hey, wait, i got a new complaint" about how we not only complain a lot, but we actually call out for help a lot instead of just keeping our complaints to ourselves, just so when someone comes to help, we dismiss them and dont take anything they say seriously even though we may love that person. Thats just what it means to me.
The song's about a very specific PART of Courtney Love. Lana del Rey did a cover of "Heart-Shaped Box" in 2012, and Courtney heard it, and felt the need for some reason to go on Twitter and inform Lana (and the world) that the song's about her...um..."girl parts".

The fact that one of its draft names is "heart shaped coffin" leads me to read the song about being about being trapped in a situation that looks like love but is actually killing you. A toxic relationship, a growing dependency on heroin, or a toxic relationship that enabled his growing dependency on heroin, take your pick.
Cobain was a punk at heart. His thing was taking abrasive, ugly sounds and writing killer hooks and melodies around it. Though he shat on his own lyrics all the time, in reality they tend to be a bit more clever than quite a lot of music that is as popular as Nirvana. They were definitely not amateurs, but were quite literally of a frame of mind that would have scoffed at technical perfection. There has been no one like them in mainstream music since.

They scoff at perfection, yet Kurt's singing is perfect for the songs. Rick Beato breaks down songs and mentions how Kurt's voice acts as the missing note in the chords he plays, tying the vocals to the guitar. That doesn't happen by accident nor was it as "imperfect" as Kurt made it out to be.
And Dave Grohl as the drummer, you know he takes great pride in his drums. It takes a lot of practice to sound that raw and imperfect.
Kurt combined the Beatles and punk better than everyone else.

That's really the beauty of great punk rock. It's catchy and melodic, but it's hidden underneath the ugly, abrasive surface.

Lex, you nailed it when saying "just playing with your friends" because that is exactly what it was all about. They were not polished and mega produced, just very raw rock music which is what music needed at that point in time.
I’d argue Vig and Albini actually did mega produce them. I saw them a few times and they were wayyyyyy rawer and noisier than their recordings.
Yes exactly! That was kind of the whole point of grunge. However, even that kinda mindset can and will be incorporated (and neutered) by the music industry as rob daniel pointed out above....
Same with punk, hiphop, rock n'roll, funk.... But these type of genres will live on keepin' that true spirit in the underground scene, we just need to keep digging and not get distracted by the industrial clones that we're being spoon-fed. There's probably a band of friends creating music you dig in a garage near you... As music lovers, it's our duty to make an effort to be there cheering them on when they have their gig at a local stage.

Anyone who says Nevermind wasn't mega produced isnt listening. Albini did his fair share with In Utero but it was night and day rawer than Nevermind. Anything Butch Vig touches is so produced and washed clean it should be in an Apple commercial. As Rob said, its so much more sonic and raw live

Nirvana was a white hot ball of beautiful rage that tore a hole in the slickly produced and shallow 80s hair band sound and burned it to cinders upon arrival. The lyrics were more Picasso than Da Vinci but the sheer amount of “FUCK YOU” embodied in their sound was immeasurable and tapped into something dark deep and primal that connected with a surprising amount of people.
Lyrics are wrong. It's "broken hymen of your highness," not "broken hearted," UGH.

Make no mistake. Kurt, Krist, and Dave were all absolutely professionals. That raw sound was an intentional callback to punk rock and it's unpolished, DIY production values. The entire Grunge movement was about rejecting the excesses and insincerity of the late 80s.
All that said, you kind of underestimate the songwriting. Sure, Smells Like Teen Spirit was shallow. It was supposed to be. That was the point of that song, to be shallow. However, when you learn the context of them, the lyrics start to get a lot deeper.
By the time this song came out, Kurt was struggling with the sudden fame, drug addiction, the uncertainty of fatherhood, and a troubled marriage. He felt trapped and caged by all of it, and the many, many fans who loved him, but expected a level of wuthenticity that was difficult for any band to maintain. The heart-shaped box.

This album was a huge hit with all the kids back in the 90s. The alternative kids, I mean. It's not like it was exactly a niche audience.
In Utero is a better album than Nevermind.

The last thing Kurt wanted was to be mainstream. He didn't want the fame, he didn't want eyes on him, expectations to rise (from fans OR the record labels). He just wanted to write music.
Really? Didn't he sign with Geffen? Weren't they on Sub-Pop originally? Because if I wanted to stay low-key as a musician, I probably wouldn't write pop songs for a pop label. I would have stayed on Sub-Pop.
@@hmpz36911 They wanted off of Sub Pop at the time. There were money issues, as there are with small indie labels, and some of the biggest bands defected to other labels. They didn't necessarily intend to attract a major, it was Susan Silver who referred them to an entertainment lawyer, who in turn set up a meeting with DGC. They actually wanted to be on Touch and Go Records out of Ann Arbor at the time. There are always problems with budgets at small labels, lack of pressing enough records to tour support to royalty payments and marketing. Green Day did the same thing, Lookout! Records just didn't have the money to support their growing fan base adequately.
i don’t buy that crap. you don’t sign with a major label and all that if you just wanna make music. you could be a local band, play bars your whole life and make decent money and “just make music” so let’s stop with the fairy tale lol. what the truth is he wanted the success, fame and money but he didn’t want the things that come with fame that HE didn’t want, the things that annoyed him or inconvenienced him. But no sorry I don’t buy the he didn’t want fame or eyes on him. You don’t go out and perform onstage if you don’t want any bit of attention. he could wrote for others and stayed in the shadows.
He wrote letters to mainstream labels asking to be on them. Hoping to be on them. And hated the mainstream at the same time. He wanted both. He wanted eyes on him and hated it at the same time. People are complicated.

Its an amazing song. Might be the best example of Kurt's writing since its a great mix of chaotic loudness and his love of The Beatles and their pop sensibilities.
One of my favorite songs. Incesticide is one of my favorite albums of theirs.
I mean how can you not love a song where Kurt screamingly implores you to "come on over and do the twist"?

There were just three instruments in their songs. Electrical guitar, a bass and battery. Electro-acoustic. No fancy stuffs. Their style suited them especially Cobain's.
They're lyrics are actually well thought through, and more advanced than a lot of groups. It's that, that makes it tough to figure out without a bit of thought. It's like after listening to a lot of they're stuff several times, you have that moment where you're like "oh snap! That was deep, and hella clever".. 😁

They're the perfect contrast to each other, that's why i keep coming back. There's a lot of songs I've never heard before featured on this channel, and listening along, sometimes I'm Lex and sometimes I'm Brad.
She has a good ear. Seemingly armed with only what she’s learned doing these reactions and little musical knowledge, she hears pretty accurately where any song fits in the musical landscape. It’s pretty impressive.
Brad just needs to learn that many songs give you imagery rather than plot, leaving you to make connections to your experiences, rather than being preachy. He’s trying hard though.
She feels the music viscerally, while he approaches it intellectually. Neither is wrong, but the contrast is definitely fun to watch!
To understand Nirvana: All through the 80's, in the Seattle area, everyone knew, at least some one person, that played in a garage band. My best friend and neighbor, for instance, had a band named the Primitives, later Pale & Skinny, who's drummer Patti eventually played for Courtney Love's band, Hole. We, in our late teens through our early to mid 20's, in that era and area, 1980's Seattle, loathed the over produced, "hair band/glam metal" music of the time played on the premier rock station, 99.9FM KISW Seattle. We were listening to our friends, in their practice sheds, and the 1st wave punk rock on vinyl from the mid to late 70's instead. Or contemporary bands like The Dead Kennedys. Stuff you could only know about at the time via word of mouth or by going to those sections in your local record store and gambling on cover art. Tower Records in Seattle and Scattergoods in Everett WA were my 2 favorite haunts. Simple? yes. That was the point. Underproduced, buzzy guitars and 3 to 5 piece drum sets. You could always find a hand drawn, ransom note style, xeroxed flyer, stapled or duct taped to a power pole, pointing you at the next all ages show at some dilapidated hall that 3 or 4 local bands had rented. That revulsion to the musically over produced, out of touch 80's, lead to the backlash of early 90's in the Seattle area as that demographic dwindled. When I 1st heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, on the way home from work, on KISW it was a beautiful day. A breath of fresh air. You have to immerse yourself in the setting to understand it. I can imagine how hard it is to empathize today, if you didn't live through it. What it was like at the time with no internet, 4 channels of broadcast TV and if you wanted to see a movie you had to rent it from a store on VHS. A light was shown on what we PNWers were listening to, thanks to SubPop Records, in our friends basements on Saturday night and it turned the music industry on its head. It sorely needed it.

The dots are there. He is talking about the abusive and manipulative relationship he had with Courtney Love. The heart shaped box is a reference to their relationship where it looks nice and pretty on the outside, but is really just a prison. He tries to bring up a complaint but it falls on deaf ears and nothing ever changes. His partner is narcissistic and domineering and manipulates him, then claims that the manipulation is making him a better person so he owes her, putting him on a guilt trip. It is the constant gaslighting process that repeats over and over, which is why the lyrics are repeated several times.

The "heart shaped box" is also an obvious metaphor to her va-jay-jay...as referenced by the "Broken hymen of Your Highness, I'm left black.

For some reason, a lot of people thought she was stupid hot back in the day when she was young, before the drugs and booze wrecked her. She used this to her advantage to manipulate Kurt (as well as Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, who she cheated on to be with Kurt), and he's aware he's been trapped by it.
She also actually gave him a heart shaped box

Usually don't comment, but I think you're off on this one. Even though Kurt was music first over lyrics and he would often mock his own lyrics within the same song, that's part of the unique song writing of Kurt. This song itself is incredibly deep if you know about him and his history. Themes of codependency, struggling marriage, drug usage, etc. They didn't want to be so obvious with their lyrics and their music was intentionally simplistic to be accessible. They admired bands like The Beatles but also had punk rock vibes and that's where some of his internal conflict with fame came from. I could go on but don't miss out on more Nirvana, and Kurt because it doesn't hit right away. Plenty to dive into with Nirvana!
agreed. Heart Shaped box was kurt's best song lyrically and pretty straight forward. No mystery in these lyrics..and definitely not random
There's a long-form audio-only interview with Kurt where he admits that his lyrics do have meaning. He said he would have to go section by section to explain it. Also that he (boiling it down here) kind of resents journalists, who he felt were always going to misrepresent him no matter what he said. He also felt like the public wasn't owed perfect explanations or insights into him.
He lied and hid behind the "It's not that deep, brother!" bs as a way to protect himself.
Sad that Lex and Brad wrote it off as not meaningful just because they didn't "get" the meaning. But...that's what we do to make ourselves feel better when we're confused. I didn't understand this level of poetry and symbolism when I first heard Nirvana, either.

Nirvana sounds simple yes. But they are deceptively complex. While the technical ability required to play the parts is quite beginnerish. To write these chord progressions along with Kurt bizarre sense of melody is another thing altogether. While almost of their songs end up being catchy ear worms, a challenge to begin with, these progressions are also very unique and not standard rock riffs and movements. They completely hit us over the head something both poppy and unique at the same time. And that is unheard of. That is why they are held in such esteem.
They strived for that “raw” sound, never fell into the trap of over production that so many bands do.
Kurt would have disagreed with the second part of that statement. On "Nevermind," he felt like the engineer tricked him into doing a lot of doubled-vocals and other studio trickery that he didn't want on the album. That's why "In Utero" sounded way more raw than "Nevermind." Kurt learned his lesson and had the power to enforce the sound quality he actually wanted.

Nirvana had a very primal sound due to the raw emotion but its definitely not basic or immature. It's straight up poetry!
Kurt often talked about how lyrics were the last part of the song he would write and frequently did so at the last minute. He also went out of his way to contradict himself and hide any meaning. Think of his writing like listening to a sarcastic teenager, they're mostly just looking to get a reaction. To be clear, he's also my favorite song writer and I grew up listening to Nirvana non-stop, just remember the lyrics are there more for effect than meaning.

Nirvana always had punk rock roots. Many other grunge bands and alternative rock bands as well. Just raw.
*"Grunge"* a genre name created from the adjective "grungy", is a mix of Punk, Metal (especially Black Sabbath), some Noise Rock, and some Pop thrown in for good measure. I don't know who the first definitive "Grunge" band (or bands) was (maybe: *Green River* or someone even earlier), but it wasn't Nirvana. I'm not trying to bad mouth the band (I'm a fan too), but the kids should know that Nirvana's music was based on what had come before. That being said, Cobain had a knack for making extremely anthemic and catchy songs from their: Punk, Metal, Noise Rock, Pop and other influences.

The In utero album is clearly Nirvanas best album musically. They had grown significantly since Love Buzz started getting radio play.

They knew what sounded good and wrote some amazing melodies and rhythm sections.
Its relatable that the songs have imperfections, that's why many gravitated towards grunge, hair bands in the 80s to early 90s wanted to make it to where it was flawless, most bands had that type of ego at the time

Lex, you hit the nail on the head. Nirvana was a garage rock band, meaning that they intentially sounded amateurish.
Lex is onto something. Nirvana must be put in the context of to the polished slick bands that immediately preceded it. Welcome to Grunge.
Nirvana is a mood. Literally, they created moods.
She nails it every time: refreshingly amateur. Lex should be a pop critic for the NYTimes. And I’m dead serious.
Nirvana- MTV Unplugged is worth your time to watch,even if you don't react to it I suggest you do yourself a favor and watch it.
Guitar, bass, and drums. Doesn't get much simpler than that. Like many classic rock bands, like the Rolling Stones and Beatles, the songs here are not musically, advanced. Great songs are always simple and have musicians everywhere asking "why didn't I come up with that?" So many songs are simple 3-4 chords and a simple lick on the guitar. It is a recipe for success. No drum machines, no choreographers, no explosions and flashy lights. Just rock and roll.
The lyrics are very simple to understand. Think of Kurt as being sarcastic. Most of the song is being sarcastic.
Sound was intentional. When I hear the word Grunge, Nirvana and Cobain come immediately to mind.

The song is about Courtney Love, Kurt's wife always stored her heroin in a heart shaped box. Both were highly addicted to heroin at this point. "Trapped inside her heart shaped box" "Drawn into your magnet tar pit trap" both refer to their addiction. Courtney survived it, Kurt did not!

being raw using the power of your youth, soul and innocence to create something beautiful without being technical, that's the spirit of punk rock, garage rock, and bands like the "the shaggs" who were 3 girls who didn't know how to play music but their father who had a fortune teller tell him his daughters would be in a famous rock band so he made them make a record... if you go listen to that album its absolutely horrible or the greatest thing ever because even though they sucked at their instrument the music they made was pure and from their hearts... kurt loved them

When nirvana dropped Nevermind and in utero in the 90s it was earth shattering. For me personally what was captivating was the fact that the band in its simplicity sounded so heavy and big. Kurt played guitar in a way that is unpolished and "dirty" and he used fender which was a more "bluesy" and melodic sounding guitar compared to others but it was such a "big" sound coming from one guitar, one bass and drums. Nirvana was massive in their simplicity and that made them stand out in a world that until that point had been dominated by hair bands with perfectionist guitar solos and over the top showmanship. That's what made nirvana so awsome, to me anyway.
Favorite Nirvana deep track is "DIVE"....worth a listen 🎶
Agreed. People say Nirvana was grunge but they’d already moved beyond that with Nevermind. But Bleach was grunge and Dive was the best grunge song of all. I first heard it on a Sub Pop compilation called The Grunge Years which I still have. It was the starting track, and is still my favorite grunge song of the era.

Nirvana was very anti-society as it was back then, most of their stuff is rebellious teen angst with a few anti-guitar solos thrown in with a stop/start ambivalent musical multiple personality disorder. They were an awesome antidote to the BS media controlled mass suggestion of the time.
Love you guys! One of the best things about Nirvana is that they were organic, unforgiving, unrefined but done in a way that sucks you right in. This is one of my favorite songs by them. The song to me sounds like a man talking about a woman who eats him emotionally.

sometimes life is confusing and incomplete and Nirvana lyrics can be snippets of awareness and fragments of interactions. If you dip in and out of mental wellness, relationships, sobriety, or you try to sum up a who;e life or relationship, it's not about perfect linear lyrics. you guys are just way off topic and didn't get the references.. the way he seems to be involved in some kind of unhealthy relationship, the references to flower names and their meanings in the song, the way he asks for the umbilical noose, as if fucking would go back to being a preborn. it's a mixture of a love letter with a suicide one, or a desperate cry for help

You guys REALLY need to react to Nirvana playing at Top of the Pops. There was a dispute about letting the band play live and they would only let the vocals be live. Kurt went on to butcher the song intentionally while the band spun their instruments around showing that they weren't actually playing. It was an amazing fuck you to the industry.

Lex you nailed it again.simplicity is bang on and as a guitarist their songs are pretty easy to play which is what makes them such a joy.unbelieveably catchy riffs is what made Kurt such a genius
Once again, Lex, you hit it on the head. Simplistic amazing creativity in their music that sounds so good to people. Nirvana single handedly killed the Hair Band Era. The minute they played , "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the world changed and I experienced it. I was so caught up the the hair bands, one day MTV played, "Smells like teen spirit", and my world changed forever, as well as the 90's and the music industry. Thank you for taking me down memory lane.
The amateurish sound is basically just the grunge vibe , that’s the whole vibe of grunge even though some grunge bands like Alice In Chains and Soundgarden can very complex at times , they just did their own thing that’s what made Grunge so refreshing back then I mean it was very much needed at the time !

I get the vibe this song is about his mother passing away. I don't know when she did or if she has, but the idea of her being one he could talk to about all his complaints and receive advice from. The verse about the umbilical noose so he could climb right back. I imagine when my mother is gone, I'll be locked in her heart shaped box, metaphorically, for a long time.

Love you guys. If the lyrics are so complex and poetic that you can't interpret them then they can't be simple and basic. Most Nirvana lyrics were about deep societal issues that bothered them so the wrote songs about them. I'm sure a real Nirvana fan has explained the meaning of this song below already. You should look at some of his influences like The Wipers, Butthole Surfers, The Vaseline’s, The Replacements. To name a few.
After you check out these influences listen to their album “Incesticide” which has their early stuff. Then you should be good 👍🏽

The context of the time is important to remember. The music that came before and was one of the things that Nirvana rebelled against was the super polished, cheesy, glam rock, hair band “metal”. It was intentionally a simple, noisy, raw, punky type sound.
They played around and made a masterpiece.
Some bands are "Polished." Some are "Raw." Nirvana is toward the "raw" end. All bands are somewhere on the scale.
Your description around 2 min, if you have ever seen or been to their hometown Aberdeen, WA, is actually spot on. A couple of gems from the rough for sure.

My decipher of the lyrics: 1. Pieces is the zodiac sign of the woman that he is talking about. Pieces women have a characteristic that they live in a dream rather than make it a reality and give chances over and over and over. So when he is weak, she is there for him again when they have tried before and it didn't work. 2. He gets drawn in again, and is in her "heart shaped box" for a time. 3. The advice given wasn't correct. Now forever in debt because you took the advice and are stuck in your situation. 4. Eat your cancer when you turn black. He is offering to take away whatever is wrong with her whatever is causing her pain. Basically, their relationship never works, despite that they try again and again and his complaint is that nothing has changed and the result will be the same.
This was always my favourite Nirvana track - from what is now a classic album. I still remember the first time I heard Nirvana… stopped me dead in my tracks - had to be there to fully understand

'Kay lemme clear this up: Nirvana was a punk rock band. Cobain was a genius lyricist. He wrote great songs and that helped to make the band great for ALL times.
This song's lyrics are horrifing. This is my opinion, but when I first heard it I said to my buddy 'this song's a suicide note'. We didn't know the story about Italy then - that it was an attempted suicide - and I didn't know if he was seriously going to off himself - I remember thinking that No musician is going to kill himself with a hit record out... Well I was wrong as hell, usually I don't mind being wrong - but this time I sure do wish I was. Poor kid.
