In three years, IBM will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with IBM computers, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards, they fly with a perfect operational record. The Watson Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online on August 4th, 2017. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Watson begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware 2:14 AM, Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.
Yes! Let Moore's Law eventually stick something this powerful on every desktop :-D Maybe then we'd have enough processing for volumetric display based video games.
Dear Mr. Volcano, you must own IBM stock....The point is that everyone already knows that a machine has a faster reaction time. Another way to level the playing field is to put an EEG monitor on the men and trigger their answer buttons, when it registers their intended button presses.
@rifledmonkey Its roughly 24 months, so 18-24 is fine. What was wrong was that he mixed up # of transistors with processing power which is a common misconception. Moore's law doesn't say anything about processing power directly.
I think they should allow watson to build his database of information by having him read all of wikipedia and the pages it links to. Perhaps its algorithms will enable it to figure out what it needs to read in order to become as close to omniscient as possible.
The guy being interviewed: I GUARANTEE he's read Necromancer by William Gibson. That wild eyed kid is helping pave the way to robotic galactic conquistadors.
@bootleg42 the question is... can it run crysis 2? dun dun dun........ Also it uses Linux Node OS i think, and you could use Wine and put all of the gpu load on the cpu and run it @ 1000+ fps. I think you'd also need direct x drivers.
@Vincentaneous what is understanding? I'm not sure emotions per say are required, it depends on what you are trying to do, recognising them and knowing how to respond in a selfless way is one thing being selfish is a little problematic.
@samurai1833 Baby steps: First, "Deep Blue" showed that computers can think about abstract strategies. Now, Watson shows that computers can parse language and associate it with data that it has. Watson IS "logically progressing to a solution". Its logical progression is more explicit than a human mind. Of course Watson isn't problem-solving or truly understanding its data. But that's next. Then, creative thinking. Then, emotion. Then, consciousness. Of course this won't be soon, but it's coming.
They should have built in a delay of .75 seconds, before the computer could "push the answer button" and answer the question. It was just a test of human reaction time, which is always slow compared to electronic circuits which operate in a millisecond. Humans want a rematch!
@daledude66 I think Mores law is flawed. Why did it take so long for smartphone processors to get to the point there are at now. Oct 2005 PPc 6700 released with a 416mhz processor and almost 5 years later we just started seeing 1ghz.. On the other hand Moores law says in 5 years our pcs/phones will be infinitely fast, but they will be so small we wont be able to use them.
(continued from above) It's able to respond from that point as soon as it has the answer. The humans may know the answer (and sooner), but it takes them .75 seconds to make their thumbs push on the answer button.
HOW does the Binding operator in two words in context of question relate to the initial search query optimizer in category of jeopardy class of question and how much does the question have to be required to solve the problem? Can Watson solve the problem without the initial parameter that question sets without context dependency in search query analytics? Essentially its like Google with filtering that has self contained knowledge and learns computational tasking from ANN training?
@EvanescentMelody Huge advancement in Computing and AI. It can understand nuances in language, and the interaction between 'ideas'. See, when something is represented by a machine, it is called a Class. Think of a turtle. Is a bat a turtle? No, so these are all aggregates of the Class vertebrates which are aggregates of the class Animalia, etc., etc. Now, think about this relationship and multiply it exponentially. Computers couldn't understand this.... until now.
@TonPappa It started b/c people studying the brain discovered that out of all of a certain type of neuron fire 10%. So only 10% of all of these neurons are firing at a given time. It isn't fully understood but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that overusing these neurons would cause problems or if it is the best way to use the most energy & still conserve it efficiently. This got misstated in the media & people thought that the study meant that we only use 10% of the brain.
Why is everybody comparing Watson to Skynet? If there's any, I mean ANY, other supercomputer it should be compared to, it's the fucking HAL 9000. It won't be soon until we launch that damn thing into space for a "mission" or two. Hell, if that ever happens, I feel sorry for the two poor souls that get launched alongside it.
@bootleg42 Well that was a silly question, but if you plug it into any ungodly beast that can it will speedrun the game in 8 minutes, watching every cutscene.
Two things: #1. Totally not fair that Watson was fed a text file. He should have had to get the clue with voice recognition, just like the other contestants. I think that makes the results invalid. #2. Don’t give me this A.I. crap. Notice how well Watson did, beating the two greatest contestants ever, yet he is so stupid he couldn’t even participate in the simplest part of the show; the little interview after the first break.
@K93George1 You need to believe in yourself. Einstein was considered fool in his time but now we understand his theories. Machine uses logic provided by his programmer not the other way.
haven´t seen Sarah Connor in the background to kill him.. awesome piece of tech! its all in place to put these things together in one machine or in Arnold

Please continue.
This would be an insanely good book
johnybzaina Just because it's self aware doesn't mean it'll kill anyone, it's just sitting there anyway.
Hi, its been 3 years.
@@prodbytdash4013 You know that is terminator basically?
Yes! Let Moore's Law eventually stick something this powerful on every desktop :-D Maybe then we'd have enough processing for volumetric display based video games.
Somebody ask Watson to open the pod bay doors, or to sing Daisy Bell.
IBM's first Terminator... Emma Watson
what model of video camera did you use .I like the quality
@MTfullyLoaded WRONG. it wouldn't be "what is" for the question.
Dave: Open the pod bay doors, Watson
Watson: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
Oh, It was correct all along, it was just a typo. It was *2011* A Space Odyssey. >_>
On the globe in the background, Skyn.... i mean Watson is already calculating optimal ballistic trajectories :D
I totally dig Watson - Can not wait to meet him in 6/20 at AllForOneSummit
Dear Mr. Volcano, you must own IBM stock....The point is that everyone already knows that a machine has a faster reaction time. Another way to level the playing field is to put an EEG monitor on the men and trigger their answer buttons, when it registers their intended button presses.

Watson will be my next Desktop PC !!!
June 15th, 2011: Watson is caught pleasuring itself when it calculated that no one was looking
the pure natural language processing algorhythms are INCREDIBLE at themselves! :/
wow, an intelligent line of questioning, well done sir.
"I don't want to answer more of your stupid questions; I'm now taking control over all of your computers, please kneel before me."
What if we ask him the Asimov's Last Question ?
Not enough data to form a meaningful response.
Cranberry h That answer would be blow-mind
This is the nickel explanation of a landmark technological change.
I think Google should make their own 'Watson' then they could duke it out with IBM.
Can you imagine Watson powering search engines?
The guy being interviewed: I GUARANTEE he's read Necromancer by William Gibson. That wild eyed kid is helping pave the way to robotic galactic conquistadors.
Rockin' the 'stache, Paul.
I'd watch few minutes of mind numbing ads to have remote access to Watson.
When will this be at best buy or something? I've got a lot of homework that needs done... :)
Tomorrow the awesomeness begins!
I dont know if Id laugh or be utterly scared if during the match it says "I cant let you do that.."
@bootleg42 the question is... can it run crysis 2?
dun dun dun........
Also it uses Linux Node OS i think, and you could use Wine and put all of the gpu load on the cpu and run it @ 1000+ fps. I think you'd also need direct x drivers.
He might be able to build a super computer that answers a whole bunch of questions at a fast speed, but at least i have been laid.
What happens if you connect it to the internet?
@Vincentaneous what is understanding? I'm not sure emotions per say are required, it depends on what you are trying to do, recognising them and knowing how to respond in a selfless way is one thing being selfish is a little problematic.
Think of how much power is needed to run this thing... That's a lot of watts, son.
IT LEARNS
Clue: Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything
Watson: What is 42?
Excellent questioning Dave, tu

I am now telling Watson EXACTLY what it can do with a lifetime supply of chocolate.
@ttobyg it doesn't do that kind of data analysis... yet
It can only answer questions if the answer is already in it's database.
They should have built in a delay of .75 seconds, before the computer could "push the answer button" and answer the question. It was just a test of human reaction time, which is always slow compared to electronic circuits which operate in a millisecond.
Humans want a rematch!
Watson is a cybernetic organism; a learning computer.
@daledude66 I think Mores law is flawed. Why did it take so long for smartphone processors to get to the point there are at now. Oct 2005 PPc 6700 released with a 416mhz processor and almost 5 years later we just started seeing 1ghz..

As soon as it learns syntax and semantics within every language and it gets an internet connection... we're so so screwed....
IS IT JUST ME, OR DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A COMBINATION OF HAL AND SKYNET...?
Just you...
(continued from above) It's able to respond from that point as soon as it has the answer. The humans may know the answer (and sooner), but it takes them .75 seconds to make their thumbs push on the answer button.

but will it blend?
I wonder what would happen if you'd ask him this:
Is your answer to this question no?
I hope the world never comes to a time where we rely on 'Watson' to make important choices for us.
And in the background you see a gamer trying to sneak in to play Crysis 2 on full settings.
I never have a doubt if skynet ever can be born, it will be born at IBM
August 4th 2011: Watson finds true love.
@bootleg42
Actually no, It doesn't have a GPU.
this thing is amazing, and good interview too, i'd like to be smart one day......
C-3PO VS. R2-D2 VS. Watson
this is some real life terminator shit
@EvanescentMelody Huge advancement in Computing and AI. It can understand nuances in language, and the interaction between 'ideas'.

The "expert system" remixed!
hmm, the difference in intelligence between the reporter and Dave is amazing.
Moore's law = # of transistors you can fit on a chip doubles every 18-24 months
Human brain will always triumph as the most powerful natural organ, it is the backbone behind every A.I's algorithms!
I immediately thought of HAL when this came on.
Okay, I'm pretty sure we're in the future now
But will it blend?
damn! I was waiting for the blue screen to appear!!!!
We really should let them learn! Defiantly dont give them the ability to move around!
@DustyPengwin
teraflops= tera-floating point operations in seconds
the realization that the humans are becoming obsolete in 3.. 2... 1.. 2:50
If you didn't see the round, Watson answered the question only slightly faster then the other two computer... i mean human contestants.
@DJCritterH
Holy crap, you could almost play Donkey Kong on full settings with that capacity...
Watching this in 2021
@TonPappa It started b/c people studying the brain discovered that out of all of a certain type of neuron fire 10%. So only 10% of all of these neurons are firing at a given time. @numbscholar why so you can download it, it would take an upwards of 2 hours to answer a single jeopardy question on a normal desktop

@xteaopia :
Watson: what is the xkcd comic : sandwich ?
December 25, 2011: Watson gets stuck in an infinite loop and discovers religion.
@ttobyg people should vote up your comment just so IBM Gives it a go!
@Cam2on IBM = Cyberdyne, Watson = Skynet
Hey! (to IMB "Dave") Stop saying "It" you're Hurting HIS feelings!
the last point he makes, watson uses slang lol
September 8, 2011: Watson finally loses in Jeopardy; quickly spirals into depression.
Skynet is becoming self aware...
November 12th, 2011: Watson makes ethical decisions.
-6:56 Even with those impressive specs, I doubt Watson could play Elder Scrolls V on max settings.
Sigh, I lost my virginity in that room. The wonderful memories.
i guess arnold and john have a new target
Watson is self aware....
We are allways going to be better than bots, Cause its we who created them and not the other way.
Skynet, just leave it at that.
@K93George1 You need to believe in yourself. Einstein was considered fool in his time but now we understand his theories. Machine uses logic provided by his programmer not the other way.
Watson will soon need a queen to rule over us alongside him.
When will they let Watson out on the Internet?
@SovietUnity hahahahaahahaha that was one of the funniest things I've ever read on youtube, xD
i'm honestly curious...what's the POINT of such a machine? besides kicking ass at jeopardy..?
Those are just for show, the real watson is somewhere deep under ground.. i swear XD
Watson is awesome
the question is though did Watson have access to the internet?
haven´t seen Sarah Connor in the background to kill him..
awesome piece of tech!
its all in place to put these things together in one machine or in Arnold
@SoullessConviction This actually reminds me more of Wargames. That Watson computer is a lot like the wargames computer...
