Good job Roy! what a stand up dude! He's a believer and he wants to have thoughts and ideas about his belief!!!! So nice to hear from a believer like Roy!
If someone during the time of Jesus wanted to convince people that they are the Messiah, they would have looked at what was prophesized and try to convince people that they're meeting what was prophesized. The fact that what's written the new testament was written to be "congruent" with a pre-existing text doesn't provide a proof that the prophesies were miraculously met.
The Exodus happened sometime during the 18th/early 19th dynasty (i.e. c.1550BC and c.1230BC) depending on which biblical chronology is used. Karl Butzer (1970s) estimated the population of Egypt around 1250BC using two methodologies to be between 2.9 and 3.5 million people. The methods he used were 1) to take the estimated cultivatable area of Egypt at that time and multiple the resulting number by the estimated carrying capacity of that land and 2) to take the estimated occupied area and multiply this by the estimated population density. Barry Kemp (1983) used a similar method to 2 (above) to derive his estimate of 4 to 5 million people. Using slave estimates from Roman Egypt and combining them with Butzer's population estimates, John Madden has estimated that the number of slaves in Egypt c.1250BC to be 200 to 250 thousand people. Maskell (2002) determined that the number of people under the age of 20 was approximately 42%. According to the book of Exodus, God commanded Moses to lead the Israelites away from the fertile Land of Goshen and to conquer, without killing anyone (because God was soon to forbid this), the already occupied Land of Canaan. Exodus states that the Israelites numbered 600 thousand men. The book of Numbers is more specific stating 603,550 males older than 20. Assuming a like number of women and grossing up for the accompanying children, we get an estimated Israelite population of 2,081,207 people [(603550 × 2)/58%]. There is no evidence in the Egyptian records to suggest that Egypt suddenly lost 40 - 50% of its population around this time, nor is there any evidence that the scrublands of the Sinai desert could support this number of people for even one year, let alone 40! The total size of the Egyptian army during the New Kingdom has been estimated at 40 thousand men. These were arranged in four divisions stationed in different parts of Egypt. If Pharaoh's army had pursued the escaping Israelites it is unlikely that they would have faced more than 20 thousand men. The Israelites outnumbered the Egyptians by 30:1, if Exodus is to be believed. Why did they not just take the Land of Goshen? Also, the Land of Canaan throughout this period was under the hegemony of Egypt. So the escaping Israelites were fleeing from Egypt to Egypt controlled Canaan. A pointless exercise if ever there was one. The story of the Exodus, as written, not only didn't happen but it couldn't possibly have happened.
Believers will claim the Egyptians covered it up but no way could the economic collapse that would follow such a large number of people leaving the country, be hidden.
"Why did they not just take the Land of Goshen?" Or summon god to drop a pillar on them, killing all 20,000 of them at once. Didn't he pull a trick like that once before, or after?
Well, that's a very unfair analysis and argument that you are making. 😠 How can a theist respond if you insist on making your points based on reason, calculations, and actual historical context?

Bunny: "They don't know what chocolate is, so I told them its really good. It'll be a few hundred years before they discover real chocolate, so i'm kind of helping them... LOL I even hide them so they feel like they did great when they find one!" Jesus: "Wow, that's good, I wish I had thought of it. You could almost start a religion with a scam that good." Bunny: "Don't worry, something will come your way! There's a sucker born every minute." Jesus: "I must think on this. It's such a good idea that I'd hate to pass over it without doing something!" The biggest mistake the caller is making is Jesus doesn't fulfill the prophecies from the Hebrew text, he fulfills the translation-filled errors of the Greek text that Paul and other Roman scholars would have been reading at the time.
@@KNylen it isn't as simple as one source. But, it is well known by honest scholars that Jesus does not fulfill the prophecies. They are twisted to force Jesus to fulfill them. You have to do some actual research of your own.
For this program, the general solicitation to theist callers is "Tell us what you believe and WHY"… however if you go so far as to tell the call screeners that you have EVIDENCE to support the supernatural claims of the bible (figuring that will increase your chances of getting on the show)… and then you start off telling us all why you BELIEVE what you believe, instead of jumping right into the evidence you claim to have, Matt should just interrupt them and say "get to the EVIDENCE"… which of course they never have.
Nahh.. The g0d of Moses wanted to exterminate some fledgling humans and the story of Exodus is all about how he went about setting things up so he could get his rocks off!
Zechariah prophecies that the messiah will ride a donkey into Jerusalem. option1: Jesus knows the prophesy and so gets a donkey to ride. option 2: It didn't happen but the authors knew the prophecy and wrote that it happened. option 3: It didn't happen but some intermediate storyteller (Q) knew the prophecy and made it up so the authors believed it did happen.
option 4: (Bible Thumper) Jesus both knew and didn't know he was fulfilling prophesy. Jesus: "Wait a minute, derp, did I just fulfill prophecy in Zechariah? Wow! It's amazing! You readers should feel just as awed as I am!
Not being funny, but how many alternatives to a donkey as normal transportation back then were there anyway ? It's hardly a massive stretch is it that a "man of the people" would only really be able to choose a donkey? Now had it been today and the prophecy went, he came in a bright green Trabant and then he actually did, then I'd be a bit more impressed Still not enough to prove anything really, but certainly a bit more impressed lol.
Mathematical analogy to congruence or consistency: If 0 = 1, then 9 = 10. Not only are the two equations consistent with each, one actually implies the other (such as by adding 9 to each side of the first equation to obtain the second one). But the fact of this consistency does not tell us whether the individual statements are TRUE - which, they are not.
The Bible is a collection of stories that were edited and retold and then rewritten over extended periods of time in attempts to increase the interest in those stories. For example, some re-tellers and later the writers who documented the verbal versions of the stories thought it was more interesting to have the hero do supernatural stuff, like walk on water, instead of simply strolling along a sandy beach. The miracles never actually happened as written, but they made for more interesting stories.

I still remember this story from when I was a child in 1960. Wynken, Blynken, and Nod Eugene Field - 1850-1895 Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night Sailed off in a wooden shoe,- Sailed on a river of crystal light Into a sea of dew. "Where are you going, and what do you wish?" The old moon asked the three. "We have come to fish for the herring-fish That live in this beautiful sea; Nets of silver and gold have we," Said Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. The old moon laughed and sang a song, As they rocked in the wooden shoe; And the wind that sped them all night long Ruffled the waves of dew; The little stars were the herring-fish That lived in the beautiful sea. "Now cast your nets wherever you wish,- Never afraid are we!" So cried the stars to the fishermen three, Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. All night long their nets they threw To the stars in the twinkling foam,- Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe, Bringing the fishermen home: 'Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed As if it could not be; And some folk thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed Of sailing that beautiful sea; But I shall name you the fishermen three: Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes, And Nod is a little head, And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies Is a wee one's trundle-bed; So shut your eyes while Mother sings Of wonderful sights that be, And you shall see the beautiful things As you rock in the misty sea Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:- Wynken, Blynken, And Nod.
matt and jim were on fire for this entire ep. what a privilege to have these great thinkers available to us. ball is so in your court, theists; so far all any of us have seen from you is utter garbage.
Jim highlights a recurring problem with theists saying: so you don't believe anything without scientific evidence. Historians & lawyers also have always required empirical evidence, long before science was established. Philosophers back to the ancient Greeks don't require empirical evidence but they do require consistent logical deduction. After that: very diplomatic conversation between the reasonable (but misguided) caller & Matt.
Depends on the caller attitude. Are they avoiding answering questions? Are they listening? Are they trying to talk over the host? Matt would have less patience with those callers than one like Roy. But I'm sure he has days when he is just in a sh..tty mood too.
it's easy to tell how Matt will respond to a caller. is the caller interested in an actual conversation by listening as well as speaking? or is the caller combative, talking over the hosts and never listening and never shutting up? very easy to tell how Matt will react to each caller.
Not that hard to predict. When a caller seems to be serious and isnt insanely dishonest, dodging questionst etc he is nice. If dishonest etc etc.. bombs away~!
Damn! When caller said, near the end, that he believes there are theological reasons why we no longer see miracles, I was hoping there would be follow-up. WHY DON'T WE? ... (Hints: Education of the masses. Higher standards overall. Cameras/ Video to record events of all kinds.)
This may be Tyne best video I have ever seen on this show in terms of being respectful. I believe people can diss agree and still be respectful to one another even though they have conflicting beliefs. I’ve always heard Hitchens and DeSusa after debates of evolution vs Creation, would always go out to dinner and have discussions on literature, music and many other academic topics. Always awesome to have class and respect!
Whoa . Did Patch Matt gulp down some thc gummies before this call ? So mellow and calm. This is a clip to show the theist relatives who can't handle the rougher tone of prickly patchless Matt.
I think what’s going on is the caller is actually listening. And so it gives Matt a chance to actually have a conversation. Not just listen to religious folks proselytize And have to stop them and tell them to listen.
I'm sorry, but as soon as Roy here said in answer to Matt's question about why he believes the bible over the others and then said "Because I had a 'personal experience in the church ', I Immediately thought.. he's a Catholic and the priest was VERY friendly to him every week. I'm a very bad man. Lol
During this call, my son looked at me from up on my deck and said "I found a bird!" Then he proceeded to throw a dead bird off my deck into the yard. How did the bird die? I have no idea. I told him to wash his hands and get the germs off - the stuff we know exists. I did not tell him it was a harbinger for doom where the end times are coming.
Asked for evidence, spends the whole minute talking about internal consistency of a story. If he were right, all that would mean is it's well written. But of course he isn't even right about that... But at least this was a nice decent caller actually capable of having an honest conversation for once.
I don't understand the whole Jesus story after we now know for a fact that the Adam and Eve story is complete legend. No original sin sort of throws a spanner into the whole narrative of salvation from their disobedienc to god.
God could easily settle all this by making himself more apparent in the real world. Maybe a few Old Testament magical miracles every now and then? Wonder why he won't do this in today's day and age? Wouldn't you think he'd want to do that so he could convert more nonbelievers to Christianity. Right after I wrote this comment, Matt essentially made the same point. I liked what he said about God playing hide and seek. Well put.
I think God would start with the Christians that have it wrong. Evangelicals say that Catholics are not real Christians. The previous Pope said that a lot of Protestant churches are deficient. And there are the Mormons and JW's.
LUKE 24: 42-43 states that the "Christian Messiah" came back in the flesh, which clearly REVERSED any "Blood Sacrifice made for the Salvation of Mankind" ! ! ! Even their own "Holy Book" contradicts their beliefs! In addition: Proclaiming that some man named "Jesus" is you new god, contradicts the FIRST COMMANDMENT of your Bible!
One of the errors of theists (Christians mainly) is taking the bible as a reference book, but when questioned for EVIDENCE to such biblical writings, it all falls apart... Those are nice stories, at best, until proven true

Grahame came hot out of the gates with stats and math, and I'm digging it! Haha. Cheers, Grahame. 🍻
Believers will claim the Egyptians covered it up but no way could the economic collapse that would follow such a large number of people leaving the country, be hidden.
Damn if that OP wasn’t a 🎤 drop.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod
Eugene Field - 1850-1895
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe,-
Sailed on a river of crystal light
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring-fish
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we,"
Said Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.
The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe;
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew;
The little stars were the herring-fish
That lived in the beautiful sea.
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish,-
Never afraid are we!"
So cried the stars to the fishermen three,
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.
All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam,-
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,
Bringing the fishermen home:
'Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed
As if it could not be;
And some folk thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea;
But I shall name you the fishermen three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.
Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
Is a wee one's trundle-bed;
So shut your eyes while Mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:-
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.
I used to sleep soundly in those days.

Not that hard to predict. When a caller seems to be serious and isnt insanely dishonest, dodging questionst etc he is nice. If dishonest etc etc.. bombs away~!
