Before coming to the knowledge that divorce after remarriage while your spouse is alive is adultery, I used to sincerely ask the Lord, "God, what is the point of marriage if I could remarry anyone I want? What is even the point of abstinence if marriage with whomever I want is possible, or so I think it's possible since so many people are doing it? You can apparently be one flesh with anyone, whenever you want as long as you're married."
Little did I know... there is a serious significance to holy matrimony and the Spirit was leading me to his truth on the matter. And now I praise him so much for revealing it to me.

Not all marriages are made in heaven and not all marriages are God's will for our lives.
Some marriages were traps by the devil to cause us to remain in bondage, to abuse us and to remove us from God's will for our lives.
Abuse, is a form of abandonment and abandonment is listed in the bible as one of the reasons to divorce and remarry.

Question: Isn't it arrogant to believe divorce and remarriage is adultery since so many wise pastors do not?
Answer: No. It isn't arrogant to believe divorce and remarriage - while the spouse yet lives - is adultery, because no pastor being wise would ever advocate for such wickedness. Only prideful pastors will walk in willful sin and teach others to do the same... Only prideful pastors make merchandise of men's souls... as they entertain their fans and in turn reap the rewards - cash donations - for their Mixture (false teachings that tickle the ears of sinners)... Only prideful pastors are arrogant enough to reject God's Word as they mock God with their fake and false worship. So it isn't arrogant to believe divorce and remarriage - while the spouse yet lives - is adultery... because God has said it is arrogant to believe otherwise.

I have prayed that the Lord send many more of His servants to speak the truth on this matter which had sadly fallen into the cracks with His people. All glory unto Him. When Paul said that one is "no longer bound," he goes on to add, "because the Lord has called us to peace." Peace? Does remarriage constitute peace? No, that which the Holy Spirit (through Paul) is referring to is no longer being bound to marital duties, which can no longer be otherwise conducted in a peaceful manner.
Concerning divorce, The Father can separate His people out from their marriage for His purposes as He did in the Book of Ezra (no where does Scripture say that the Lord cannot separate out that which He or man has joined together). However, Paul does not mince words when He tells those who are divorced to remain unmarried. If remarriage was allowed whilst the first spouse was still alive, then what prohibits 3 marriages or 5?
I walk in this example, personally. The Lord has not ordained a spouse for me, and so I needed to lay those desires on His Holy Altar, along with my life, in order for the flesh to be crucified and to die to self.
Last but not least, the Lord's judgement is now upon us and it begins in His House. Christians who are living in sin are under this judgement- not His provision and protection, as most believe.

missinsanelogic don’t spin the Word. In that statement was actually saying that divorce is meaningless and not recognized by God. The person who divorces his wife can force her into adultery as being married to a husband in that time could have meant survival. So the man could be guilty and or share guilt of the sin of adultery simply by doing the sin of divorce. He does not even have to commit the sexual act to be guilty. That is the destructive power of divorce. It is what I will continue to rebuke and call out for the rest of my life. Divorce and remarriage is adultery. Period.

After studying this topic, I have a question.
If a wife divorces her husband and refuses to reconcile. Wouldn't it be lawful for a man to take a second wife? Becuase polygamy was lawful. Even the new testament mentions to be a church elder, the man must be the husband of one wife. The verses seem very sex specific. In the old testament law, it wouldn't have been lawful for a woman to divorce her husband either.
There isn't a verse that says if a woman divorces her husband, that the husband cannot take a second wife. For the sake of procreation, that makes sense to me. Any thoughts?

The admonition against divorce at all is to prevent tempting your spouse to commit adultery by separating. The except in case of sexual immorality thing in Matthew allows divorce because you can't tempt your spouse to commit a sin they are committing anyway. It does not give you permission to remarry. Just gives you permission to get rid of your spouse and live elsewhere. Of course it is important to remember in Jesus day, adulterers were murdered by stoning to death. Because even then, people knew only death could break the marriage covenant, so they solved the problem with bloodshed.

Nowhere in the Bible have I found that it's okay to remarry if you divorce. Only death of the spouse allows it. We should not add to scripture to make up our own assumptions of what Paul was saying. In some of the oldest manuscripts that we have access to Matthew 19:9 does not read like our modern Bibles do. Matthew 19:9 reads just like Matthew 5:32 there is no exception clause in Matthew 5:32.

I think many know part of mine.
I was raised in a fake Christian home but didn’t know it at the time. My parents are remarriage adulterers and have been all my life. I am an uncovenant child. My father has a living first wife but she had left him at a young age and then he got saved later and “married “ my mom. Saying that the equal yoke makes the marriage since his first unsaved wife departed even before he believed, he likes to assume the bondage to her as his covenant spouse is broken. He’s been a deacon in the church all my life. My parents act all holy but now I know the truth.
I at first thought like them so as you know I “married” a woman who like my dad had a first hubby who left her, never had kids and she was unsaved then. So we “married” and had 5 uncovenant kids. One day a lovely new secretary came to the church and caught my eye. I felt guilty until I realized my “wife” was not my own! Blessed indeed to be freed from that awful union and now in covenant marriage with the secretary Tally! Though the churches and my parents side with my fake ex and support her stand for my return since they all believe professing Christians need to keep their “marriages” even if they had a living spouse before they were saved that left them! They like to claim this is how the Bible is and how God makes covenants and that he only allows a believer with an unbeliever in yoke one flesh as long as the unsaved stays in the marriage.
Trying to get them all to see the true nature of covenant marriage, that God joins ALL first time or widowed marriages of a born man and woman, happily and until death! The bond, the binds, the bondage stays for life even if both are satanists! Or one is a saint and one is a satanist! There is never any sin in covenant marriage. It is never to be repented of.

Please allow me to apologize for my polemic essay earlier. I've been praying about learning the truth on this matter and being less angry relative to my own desires, and less needing to take it out on fellow believers and especially pastors or priests. Here are some new thoughts that came to me:
One of the oldest churches, the Catholic church, does not allow for divorce and remarriage. Another of the oldest churches, the Orthodox church, does.
Jesus states that divorce and remarriage = adultery 4 times in the Gospels. 2 of those times includes an exception for sexual immorality, 2 do not.
As suggested by the above ambiguity, which causes so much debate within the church, God knew that it might not be good to never allow for divorce, but he also knew that if he spelled it out too clearly that that would be taken advantage of.
The end result is that anyone who comes to faith and is concerned about it, will be extremely careful in their future decisions, and maybe that's the best possible answer. Which means to me I will never have a truly solid answer on whether it is right or wrong. And God in his wisdom does not want me to have such an answer, because then I would take decisions I make in this area of my life less seriously.

    • @SaintAthanasiusChurch

Thanks for the comment and apology, Derek. We understand this can be a difficult subject. And we understand that it can be difficult to harmonize the texts in Matthew with the texts in Mark, Luke, Romans, and 1 Corinthians. But we are persuaded the best way to harmonize the texts is to permit divorce in cases of unrepentant sexual immorality, but to never allow remarriage while the former spouse is still alive. When Paul gives a concession for the wife to separate from her husband, he says her only options are to remain single or be reconciled. The West has been blessed far greater than the East, and we are persuaded that this is due in large part to the West not adopting the East's permissive stance on divorce and remarriage. And since we have recently in the last century adopted the East's permissiveness, we are seeing God's curse on us because of our covenant unfaithfulness.

At the very least I've concluded it is absolutely inappropriate to pray for a second wife. Instead I'm praying for God to have me do whatever he wills, and to participate in church as much as I can including community efforts. If he would want to restore this aspect of my life and give me a real second chance one day with someone who takes marriage and life seriously, it might become clear some day. But if not...it's alright. He already richly blessed my life in countless ways.
Also, I think the church changing positions on this (regardless of denomination) has very little to do with the amount of divorce today. I believe it is much more to do with that contraceptive technology and the resulting autonomy for women simply makes sex, marriage and divorce have less severe consequences (though obviously still very severe, especially where children are concerned). And modern narcissism, which infects everyone's minds with idols of sex, money and distracting entertainment. It's a miracle any time anyone's life becomes oriented squarely towards God.

His son Abraham has apostatized from the faith because of Piper's soft, cowardly, position on divorce and remarriage.

The divorce and remarriage for adultery doctrine is based solely on the supposed guilt of the wife in Matthew 5:32, and Matthew 19:9. However, the wife in Matthew 5:31-32 is clearly not guilty of fornication because the Jews that Jesus was speaking to were still living under the law, and if fornication was discovered, there was a moral obligation to report the offender according to Deuteronomy 22:13-24. The wife, who would have been found guilty of fornication, was subsequently stoned to death, according to the law, which had still governed the Jews up until Christ's death on the cross. The same for a woman caught in adultery, according to Leviticus 20:10. How could a wife, guilty of fornication, or adultery, under the law of Moses, be given a writing of divorcement and be caused to commit adultery with whosoever marries her, that is divorced? Jesus is clear, in these examples, that the wife is not guilty of fornication, but is still caused to commit adultery if she marries another man now that she is divorced. This is the only way that Matthew 5:31-32, and Matthew 19:9 keep harmony with Romans 7:2-3, and 1 Corinthians 7:39. Please use wisdom when living in any situation against what the scriptures command.
The ancient Jews called the betrothed (engaged) "husband" and "wife" according to Deuteronomy 22:23-24, Matthew 1:18-25, and Luke 2:5-7.
Deuteronomy 24:1-4 (Moses's precept of divorce and remarriage) was never for fornication or adultery. Allowing those guilty of fornication and adultery to remain living and become a prospect for remarriage was against the law of Moses in Deuteronomy 22:13-24 and Leviticus 20:10, which commanded that those who were found guilty of fornication and adultery be put away from Israel, and stoned to death.
The law of Moses was not given to the world, only to the Jews. From the exodus, to Christ's death on the cross, the law of Moses governed the Jewish people. But when Jesus died on the cross, he caused the Jews to be dead to the law of Moses so they could be joined to Christ under a New Covenant. This is what Jesus's fulfillment of the law of Moses, including Deuteronomy 24:1-4 (Moses's precept of divorce and remarriage), means. Paul gave several warnings to Christian believers against keeping the law of Moses over following Christ and his commands under the New Covenant with Christ. Keeping the whole law is no longer possible for those in Israel and that is why Christ prophesied that the temple would be destroyed. These scriptures make it clear that if you choose the law over Christ, that you must keep the whole law: Romans 7:4, Galatians 3:1-9, Galatians 3:10-29, Galatians 4:1-7, Galatians 4:21-31, and Galatians 5:1-15.
The phrase "sexual immorality" being used in Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9, in place of "fornication", creates conflict with what is written about fornication and adultery in Hosea 4:13-14, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and Galatians 5:19-21.
Being unequally yoked to unbelievers is not a cause for divorce, once two become one-flesh in a covenant of marriage, according to 1 Corinthians 7:12-14. Many one-flesh covenant marriages between unbelievers are recognized by God in the scriptures, most notably the marriage covenants between Herodias and King Herod's brother Philip, Potiphar and his wife, Ahab and Jezebel, and Ruth to her deceased husband Mahlon by Boaz when he took her to be his wife.
Some are teaching that 1 Corinthians 7:15 implies that those who are abandoned by the unbeliever, are "no longer bound" in a one-flesh covenant of marriage. The reason this is in conflict is due to the way they word it, which gives it an entirely different meaning, and context. 1 Corinthians 7:15, says, "15But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace." As you can see, the actual scripture says "not under bondage," which means that the husband or wife is not enslaved to sin with the unbelieving spouse, and is free to worship Christ in peace. Subsequent translations have changed the words to imply that they nullify the marriage covenant, when this is not at all the case. The issue that this creates is with 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, which says, "10And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: 11But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife." As you can see, those who claim 1 Corinthians 7:15 has the Apostle Paul giving permission to remarry do not understand that the abandoned husband in 1 Corinthians 7:11 is expected to also remain unmarried, in order to be reconciled with his wife. The theory that 1 Corinthians 7:15 nullifies two as being one-flesh in marriage puts the Apostle Paul directly at odds with Christ, by implying that he has issued an opposing command.
Some also teach that 1 Corinthians 7:27-28 is referring to both divorced men, and virgin women, and not exclusively to men and women (virgins) who have never been married. This has been falsely taught for some time in churches as referring to anyone who is not currently in a marriage, which, for them, also includes those who are divorced. This is a very false assumption, and puts these verses in a different context, that is at odds with both the teachings of Christ and the apostle Paul. We see Paul refer to virgins, which signifies the unmarried who have never before been wed, which is the proper context here. We see Paul saying clearly that it is good for virgins, which is also speaking to never before wed men here, "that it is good for a man so to be." He goes on to say, "Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife." Who is he referring to here? Men who, like himself, have never married. The word "bound", in these verses, is a clear reference to betrothal (engagement) and not to a one-flesh covenant of marriage. The ancient Jews were considered bound as husband and wife during the betrothal (espousal/engagement) before becoming one-flesh in a covenant of marriage, through consummation. This is affirmed by the context of the term "bound" seen in Numbers 30:14-16.
The Jewish couples in ancient Israel, who were betrothed (engaged) were also bound together until death, either by execution for fornication, or by other causes. Then Paul says, "But and if thou marry, thou has not sinned", which is who? The men who had never married in the congregation at Corinth. So he begins with verses 25-26 speaking exclusively to men that have never married. Paul then says, "and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned", which is speaking directly about virgin women who have never been married, within the congregation, not divorced women. Notice that verse 34 says, "There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband." Paul speaks plainly when he says "there is a difference between a wife and a virgin." Paul goes on to say, "But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry." This is speaking of a father with a virgin daughter who has become of age to bear children when it says, "let them marry." This is a clear command to a third party, the father, and not a divorced man who has taken a virgin to be his wife. Paul then says, "Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well." This is referring again to the father who decides it is better for his dauther not to marry, but to stay betrothed (engaged), under the present distress, by saying that he "hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin." Paul then says, "So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better", which means that fathers of virgin daughters in the congregation do well if they choose to allow their betrothed virgin to marry, and fathers, who choose not to allow their virgin daughters to marry do better, under the current climate. For more proper context of the word "bound", let's look further down in this chapter to verse 39, which says, "39The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 7:39). For so long, these scriptures, between verses 25-38, have been twisted and used to enable divorce and remarriage, by wayward churches and teachers, and have caused many to stumble and to be trapped in unlawful unions.
The use of the woman at the well, in regard to marriage, falsely implies that Christ was endorsing remarriage after a divorce. This teaching is in defiance of Matthew 22:23-28, which shows a woman who had been widowed seven times, and entered into each subsequent marriage without any scriptural conflicts with God's law of marriage (one-flesh covenant) seen in Genesis 2:23-24.
Mark 10:1-12 is the same biblical record of Matthew 19:1-12, which both record Christ's teaching that day beyond the Jordan. There is no mention of the words "fornication", "writing of divorcement", or "divorced" in Mark's Gospel, because Mark was not written to the Jews (as Matthew's Gospel was), but to evangelize the Romans and Greeks, who had no knowledge of the law in Deuteronomy 22 or Deuteronomy 24. All of these facts draw a clear understanding that remarriage after a divorce, under the New Covenant with Christ, is a scripturally false and baseless teaching.

(Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.Rom 7"4) anyone who relies on works of the law is under a curse (For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Its easy standing on the side till you get into this situation. And then what about peopke living together, do you think you are free because you didnt finish the paperwork. I'm so curious...Most people shoot down a remarriage after sexual immorality.
If Gods Word says it in Matthew 19:9 why are so many people kicking against it? Is Gods word right in this or wrong? Is it a interpretation issue? It seems simple to me.
Simple enough that I can say that if you go against matthew 19:9 you're unfortunately not speaking by the full councel of Gods Word in this matter. I'm I wrong for saying that? Is the Word wrong?

Most DEFINATELY there is an issue of error.... on the basis of willfully ignorant people redefining what the word of God actually says!
Jesus uses BOTH words, "fornication" and "adultery" in MATTHEW 19:9, & MATTHEW 5:32. (See verses below)
MATTHEW 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of *fornication,* causeth her to commit *adultery:* and whosoever shall marry her that is DIVORCED committeth *adultery.*
MATTHEW 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for *fornication,* and shall marry another, committeth *adultery:* and whoso marrieth her which is PUT AWAY doth commit *adultery.*
A child is smart enough to figure out the difference between the two by their definitions:
FORNICATION - Sexual immorality outside the bounds of marriage.
ADULTERY - Sexual immorality against the bounds of one's marriage covenant.
People wrest the scriptures, twisting and redefining what the words actually say to appease their guilt. They're only fooling theirselves.... Damning theirselves, in all truthful reality!
There is a sinister reason behind the production of new translations. Think about it.

Divorce and remarriage is not a sin. The Bible never says "God hates divorce." It says, "God hates the putting away." Divorce and "putting away" are two different words in Hebrew, and the English translators either didn't know that, or didnt like that and changed it, like when they changed "Sabbath" to "first day," because they wanted to justify Sunday worship.
Sticking to divorce, again, God said he hates the putting away, which is what the pagan nations around Israel did. The Hebrews were to write a bill of divorce, and give the ex-wife her dowry back, so she then had something to live off of, and a legal right to remarry. If she was merely put out of the house and told not to return, she couldnt remarry, and had nothing.
Interestingly, today pastors preach the "putting away" all over again, saying just because your partner betrayed you, you have no options and are forever bent over a barrel.
But that's what we get for listening to pastors and theologians, and not God. Jeremiah 8:8, the scribes change the words of God. Or as Jesus said, they preach the traditions of man, while ignoring what God requires.

In your Mark 10:12 example you stated "a wife who does not divorce her husband then she marries another man she commits adultery." I think this is just by mistake, since you have the proper context on the other scriptures. The actual verse, in Mark 10:12, states, "and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

Some of these pastors, like John Piper, aren’t saying remarriage is ok. They are saying if you are already remarried (esp if that marriage produced kids) then you can’t put the horse back in the barn. What’s done is done.
There ARE some pastors who say it’s ok and usually because they a.) are remarried themselves or b.) have officiated weddings of remarriage and that’s what they do.
I am divorced and it is the desire of my heart to remarry but I won’t and I am banking on my faith and obedience growing stronger. My ex-husband never remarried either but he has a common-law wife. He has his path and I have mine.

Jesus said it was adultery to remarry, so are you saying He is arrogant. There is the true and false, the body of Christ and the temple harlots. They body of Christ follows Christ as He followed His Father.

No, we are saying Christ spoke truth. That it is adultery to remarry. And that these pastors who deny this are arrogant.
Please watch the whole documentary. We are siding with Christ over these pastors.

Jesus clearly accepts divorce on grounds of sexual immorality Mathew 19:9 and Mathew 5:32. So u may say all u want but Jesus allowed divorce on those grounds and it's plain and clear. So if someone divorces his spouse due to sexual immorality it's OK and they hv committed no wrong.

John MacArthur the calvinist says that man is so depraved that he is unable to seek God and then their doctrine blames God for causing sin...
    John Calvin does....
“thieves and murderers, and other evildoers, are instruments of divine providence, being employed by the Lord himself to execute judgments which he has resolved to inflict.” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 1, Chapter 17, Paragraph 5)
“The devil, and the whole train of the ungodly, are in all directions, held in by the hand of God as with a bridle, so that they can neither conceive any mischief, nor plan what they have conceived, nor how muchsoever they may have planned, move a single finger to perpetrate, unless in so far as he permits, nay unless in so far as he commands, that they are not only bound by his fetters but are even forced to do him service” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 1, Chapter 17, Paragraph 11)
    John Piper does.....
"God . . . brings about all things in accordance with his will. In other words, it isn’t just that God manages to turn the evil aspects of our world to good for those who love him; it is rather that he himself brings about these evil aspects for his glory (see Ex. 9:13-16; John 9:3) and his people’s good (see Heb. 12:3-11; James 1:2-4). This includes-as incredible and as unacceptable as it may currently seem-God’s having even brought about the Nazis’ brutality at Birkenau and Auschwitz as well as the terrible killings of Dennis Rader and even the sexual abuse of a young child . . .
EVERY CALVINIST I HAVE TALKED TO DOES......
Jews thought salvation was only for them as the elect nation of God and could be achieved through works of the law. Calvinists think salvation is only for them as the Augustinian-elect of God. Ironically they both have the same elitist objections and can’t stand the fact that salvation is freely and genuinely offered to all through faith. Calvinists can even see the similarity between themselves and the Jews who boasted of their election. The irony is literally staggering. Calvinists are the 21st century Pharisees. Calvinism: Satan's way of unloading his responsibility for what he has done in this world and placing it on God.."God predetermined everything and caused everything including evil" If God predetermined everything..that means everything!! And so Calvinism places the blame of anything evil on God.. That is blasphemy..They follow a false god that is responsible for evil. I mean really?!? God gets glory by purposefully creating creatures that are intended to burn and suffer in unfathomably painstaking eternal torment as a way for Him to have glory?
