    Hi, great video!! I think all the people that ignore or sell used DTX M12 don’t know how to use the M12
    Sequencing and programming this drum pad is really really difficult. I have the M12 since 2010 and last year I discover a feature that expand the possibilities of this drum pad.
    If you connect the Multi 12 to pc you can sequencing more sound that the 12 pad can handle.
    If anyone wants to give a look to this feature need to manually choose the pad from the right arrows and than you can see that you have more pad against the 12 or ,with the expansion pads, 17 pad.
    Than you can program the “others pads” that isn’t a physical pad from the pc. I use this pad live and this pad is another percussionist that expand your sound.
    I programmed this pad in this way, a pattern that play sound from midi 20 to 27 ( seven different instruments programmed from pc) and with the 12 physical pads play others percussion sound.

    I'm trying to use the dtx as an external sound module, midi in going to a launch pad Pro so I can sequence from there. The sounds can be triggered from the launch pad no worries but wierdly the dtx module is sending gm midi sounds, pianos and sitars etc to midi channel 1-16 drums is on 10 as you'd expect but I can't seem to turn off the midi it's kicking out on the other channels. Any idea how to turn them off please? you seem to know this module well

      Hi Ed, sorry for the late reply. Uh, weird problem. Haven't tried this yet as I'm not the biggest fan of the sound within the Yamaha and I mainly use it as a midi controller for Ableton. You are using the 5pin MIDI cable I'm guessing? In which case, do you need the "return" midi at all? Just get rid of that second cable to avoid the pad sending midi anywhere you don't want it?

      Hi! Sorry for the late reply. What exactly do you mean? You can simply set up separate MIDI notes for every pad - just like you would put sounds on it. (You can then set the audio to none if you wanted some of them to be silent and just sent MIDI while others still send audio)

    Hello Tobias, I would like to thank you and cheer you for your awesome content. I've doing looping for a while, first with a standalone setup with my guitar, the dtx12 and the rc300. But since 3 years ago that I'm into Ableton Live, I've been using the push2, the KM softstep2 midi controller and the looper device from ableton itself (Couldn't have made work perfectly). I've been struggling and wondering if I could integrate both in a fluent and functional setup. At least This is a great start with the dtx. Thanks and greetings from Colombia.

    Thank you for the info. Much appreciated. I'm looking to program chord stacks on to individual pads. For ease of programing, can the chords be played on an external midi keyboard? Is there a function which allows the sounds from each individual pad to play on(hold mode) until a SUBSEQUENT pad is played?

    • @tobiasmiorin
      @tobiasmiorin  Год назад

      Hey John, You would have to program the notes for the chord stacks individually into the midi layers. There is no way of 'recording' it from an external keyboard. Quite a bit of work. Are you using the M12 with Ableton? Then I would highly recommend to do that programming in there.

    Hello, I am attempting to set up my layers to play four different pitches as you have shown, in order to play a bass line. I am using the ipad app while creating these settings and whenever I choose a specific instrument to play the "note," the pitch always sounds at C4 (middle C), even if the note value says something completely different, like G0 or C2. It is doing this with any instrument I try and with any "note" I put in. Can you please advise on how to solve this issue?

    • @tobiasmiorin
      @tobiasmiorin  4 года назад +1

      Right let's see what we can do! I'm guessing you have installed the USB driver for the pad and set it all up properly in Ableton's MIDI settings? (see my video on how to connect your pad to Ableton). Then: Can you see the little orange light in the top right corner of Ableton flash when you hit the drum pad? If yes, this means MIDI is coming in. Make sure you set the channel with the drum rack to "MIDI From" "All Ins" (just to make it easier for now) and then record arm your channel. Now when you hit a pad you will see an orange square flashing at the left side of the drum rack. That's the note this pad is set to. Simply drag and drop your sound on that slot of the drum rack. Done.
      Hope this helps!

      Hi! This is just Yamaha's preset to make it easy to play the kit with an external kick pad (through port 14/15) or without by playing the kick drum by hand on pad 7. You can of course change the sound on ANY pad by pressing on 'VOICE'. Here you select the pad by simply hitting it (or manually by using arrow up, then = or -) and use the + and - buttons to navigate through sounds. Hope this helps!

      Hi Renato,
      Yes. First plug an expression pedal into the 'FT SW' input of the M12. Then go to the foot switch page (UTIL4-2) and select footswitch "FC7". Now, in the MIDI section of your patch (UTIL4-1), you can choose a CC number to manipulate all kinds of control changes within Ableton. Just midi map whatever knob or fader you want to the pedal like you would with a pad.

    Hi Tobias. Diving into this again while trying to setup a nice template for using the DTX with programs such as Superior Drummer. Do you know if I can set different thresholds for the individual layers, in that way using for instance one pad for both snare center and rimshot snare when played harder. Does that make sense?
    Hope you are doing well, and thanks again for your incredible work and way of explaining.

    • @tobiasmiorin
      @tobiasmiorin  3 года назад

      Hi Mikas, yes you can. Two ways of doing this:
      1.) On the pad: When you set up the notes for the layers as explained in the video (A,B,C,D), use the right arrow to make your way to 'VelLimit' and you can set a velocity range for each layer individually
      2.) In Ableton: You can use an instrument rack with multiple drum racks on it. Then open Chain List and select the Velocity tab. Here you can set the velocity range for each drum rack. These can also overlap (just move the main beam) and even fade (move the upper, lighter part of the beam) which gives you tons of flexibility!
      Hope this helps!

    Great video Tobias, thanks for sharing!
    I'm curious if you know how to trigger external MIDI devices without triggering internal Multi-12 voices, also without turning off Local Control globally? We're hoping to trigger some sounds internally with certain pads while also triggering some sounds externally with other pads, without both internal and external sounding at the same time. So far when we play external sounds, we also get internal sounds from the Multi. Of course one could simply turn down the volume control on the Multi to only hear the external MIDI device, or turn off internal voices in utilities, though that defeats using internal and external sounds seamlessly in a performance setting. It seems like it should be possible.
    An example would be, say we want to play aux percussion on pads 4, 5, 6, with internal sounds, while we want to trigger samples on pads 7, 8, 9, on an external MIDI device.
    Thanks again for the great vid!!

      Hi Troy,
      Thanks a lot for your kind words! Glad the videos are helping.
      Ok, so if I understand correctly you want to use some pads triggering internal pad sounds, and other pads triggering external sounds - all within the same patch and without having to physically turn down the pad volume.
      I'd do this:
      - Pads for internal sounds:
      [VOICE] - select the required sound
      [MIDI] - make your way to submenu 1-2 (midi note) and hold the MINUS button till the display shows 'OFF' for that pad.
      - Pads for external sounds:
      [VOICE] - hold MINUS till the display shows 'no assign' - this means there is no sound on the pad
      [MIDI] - select the midi note you would like to use
      Should you require these settings to change between songs, I'd require programming multiple patches and either click through them on the pad or use program changes sent from your DAW to make the changes for you.
      Did this help somewhat?
      All the best,
      Tobias

      @@tobiasmiorin Tobias, thank You so much for the awesome information and pro tips!!
      Very much appreciated! I will try all you've suggested.
      I also stumbled across a section in the MIDI area to turn on or off the Tone Generator or external MIDI transmission per channel, per pad, which is nice! I can't believe the power of this drum module. I do wish there was a Mac application for the computer like the iPad app. I've yet to try the iPad app, though we're considering making the purchase to really take advantage of the Multi 12.
      Our band used a DrumKat for about 20 years, mostly for triggering our samples, playing perc sounds, playing chordal synth sounds, and the last few years, controlling Patches (Songs) in MainStage. It sadly kicked the bucket this past year, and we've been on a journey to find a suitable replacement that covers our unique needs. We tried the Roland SPD SX, and while very powerful, we thought the Yamaha might give us more MIDI flexibility and heard it a nice playing feel as well. I'm impressed with it so far! They both have some great strengths.
      Thanks again for taking the time to help me out! Totally saved me over here.
      Blessings 😎👍

    Hi Tobias! Great succinct and informative vdo. Thanks. Actually I use mine to also trigger synth sounds, however, even with only layer A activated on a pad.. the synth plays a different note..and if I change the midi note, although it begins to tune the synth.. it changes the Multi 12 tuning and voice also.. I am aware that the * symbol means the channel is already used but again when you try to change the midi channel the voice also changes.. I have been backwards and forwards through the midi menus and Utility midi menu but cannot seem to solve the issue. Guess you may not be able to help on this one from what you've said. Midi can be a learning curve sometimes. Tis a great Yamaha machine anyway sure.

      Hey Paul! Firstly, thanks for the kind words. Glad you liked the video.
      Secondly I'm afraid I slightly struggle to understand the problem. Are you saying you're setting a MIDI note on the pad but it 'comes out' as a different note on your computer? Are we talking different octave or completely different note? What do you mean by "it changes the M12 tuning and voice also"? The star means that another pad on your patch already uses that midi NOTE - it has nothing to do with the midi CHANNEL. Two different things :) Feel free to drop me an email and we'll see if we can get it sorted.

    Yeah, but how can you tell it not to respond to channel 1? There doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off, so you have to either segregate the M12 to its own MIDI interface, or turn the volume down on whats playing.

    • @tobiasmiorin
      @tobiasmiorin  3 года назад

      Hi Nathan, not entirely sure I understand what you mean. Are you trying to just turn the Midi off? Yes, you can do that for each individual pad. Just as you can turn off the sample for each pad too. Just keep pressing '-' when choosing the midi note and it will end up at 'off'

    • @nate6692
      @nate6692 3 года назад

      @@tobiasmiorin No - and three or four others have mentioned the same thing. The Multi12 responds to everything incoming as it's in omni mode. You CAN NOT make the M12 not play things on midi channels not intended for it. They have to be on a separate wire. It's incredibly stupid and limiting for a flagship product.

      Hey, sorry I'm not entirely sure what you mean. You're sending MIDI from a different device to the pad and it's responding with a piano sound that you don't want? What exactly are you trying to achieve? Cheers

    • @nate6692
      @nate6692 3 года назад

      It appears that the TG Switch only affects the MIDI messages sent out from the pads, and does nothing about disabling the internal TG on incoming MIDI. You have to segregate the M12 onto it's own cable. It's a glaringly obvious limitation in an otherwise stellar product. If there is note information on channel one, the M12 is going to play a piano sound. period. There is no setting to disable that.
