The story is a broken mess in all honesty.
Using mere concepts of other works like Fullmetal Jacket, Animal farm, the last unicorn and watership down which are then super glued together and held with ductape.
Instead of focusing on one concept it goes all over the place hoping it seems high brow by throwing all these concepts together and hiding the cracks by absurd violence towards cute creatures.
The weird Cain and Abel brother thing was not really required as it kind of defeats the purpose of "War makes average men do unspeakable things".
Having twin brothers where one is a psychopath simply due to a percieved slight and neglect and presure by both parents kind of defeats the anti war sentiment as the evil twin came out broken anyways and the war/military thing did nothing to make him such.
But i guess the script writer realised he was making a Private Pile from fullmetal jacket with chubby so added the no reason evil twin so people wouldn't notice.

Well the ending is just kain and abel, the first sons of adam and eve. Them both getting combined with the unicorn into this human form for me means that both the innocence and the "sins" are combined in us humans. We are capable of very evil and very kind things alike and do both.

I think that Bluey never really hated Tubby just for being born before him. I think the explanation for it is that it was a mixture of him trying to rationalize his mothers favoritism while also internalizing his fathers words of needing to be the best. His brother was born first, therefore he did something "better" than him. In his young mind, he must've thought that was why his mother liked Tubby more, and that jealousy only festered until he find more and more reasons to hate his brother, until it wasn't about who was born first anymore, only that he hated Tubby.

I loved this movie a lot partly because it's from the same creator / director of BirdBoy: and The Forgotten Children which is another good but dark adult animated film that touches on a lot of mature issues and themes. But what I enjoyed about Unicorn Wars is that while it is a gore-filled violent feast, it's still has substance and a story to it filled with many underlying themes and messages to it that you can pick apart or go a bit more in depth on.

he mentioned being partly inspired by Apocalypse Now, which itself took lots of inspiration from sources like The Golden Bough and TS Eliot's "The Wasteland".
only yokels believe in dark/light, good/bad, and binary thinking. rather, the sense of the "shadow self" isn't just one "evil twin", but rather various "dark sides" everybody has.
conversely, we also have many "light sides". it's how people can choose to forgive rather than get revenge, or choose to do better, or stay quiet and listen rather than get into an argument, or just abandon a bad situation rather than coming back with a weapon.
so much focuses on the dark side of humanity, but very little focuses on our light side--the sides that chooses good over bad. and these light sides appear very frequently in life too. people have done so many wonderful things, and we still do every day.
i believe people are essentially good inside, though unfortunately, some people are born with (or acquire) mental illness that makes them do bad things.
apes are generally peaceful creatures who don't enjoy fighting. in fact, they only do it when it's absolutely necessary. human apes are extremely social and very emotionally dependent on their fellow apes. we need one another all throughout our lives.
but because we're existentialists ("we think, therefore we are"), we assign subjective meaning to everything....and this produces art, and it also produces war.
we feel very deeply, and that means we also fear very deeply. and that by itself is a pretty simple explanation of why people do bad things: because we feel deeply, and fear deeply.

True, this movie pretty much shows why bad parenting (and people not being able to address traumas and/or any possible PDs) can have consequences to societies and future generations. The way the society was built as well as the background Bluey and Tubby grew up in ends up leading to doom of the bears in general.

If there's poison in the foundation it'll effect everything built on top of it. There's normally never a clear reason to think the way he does unless you know how it started.

I cried at the end, seeing the unicorn and brothers merge into a person because the end result is what humans are. Seeing both souls of the vile and good merge was uncomfortable. it is like the new human was leading other impressionable beings, the monkeys, into a complicated future full of unpredictable chaos of war, resolution, bitterness, understanding etc. it's scary how you can see the brothers in ourselves. During both of these scenes he's still abiding by his beliefs and principles, something many of the other bears didn't do. I feel Baker could portray that strong yet misguided morality well. Personally, I love the whole birth sequence. It’s the purest depiction of Azulin’s issues. Why did the universe choose Gordi first? Who knows. Maybe there was a deeper purpose, maybe it’s just random chance. In Azulin’s perspective, however, it’s proof of his inferiority. It’s an unbearable worldview. Every moment he’s not the center of attention is an indictment of his worth.
Is he REALLY this evil just because he was born second? No, of course not. There is no valid way to rationalize his motivations. But the birth scene is the strongest possible emotional foundation for him to cling to. “The universe wronged me before I was even born, therefore I will declare war on nature itself, and I will stand victorious.” That’s the best way I could describe his worldview.
He’s possessed by envy. Perhaps he is the embodiment of the spirit of envy itself. Everything that doesn’t bow to him is a threat to be destroyed. He is a raging fire that burns everything in his path.
He’s a fascinating character. I’m surprised how much I want to empathize with his plight. I wonder if it’s more due to good writing or my vulnerability to cute aesthetics.

Actually, there's a story in the bible about a guy named Jacob, or Yaakov in Hebrew which comes from the world akev which means heel in Hebrew. The reason he is called that is because when him and his tween were born, Yaakov's tween came out before him and Yaakov grabbed his brother's heel because he wanted to be born first.
In his story, we see how jealous Yaakov is of his tween brother, going so far as to disguise himself as his tween so that their sick father would give him the will money instead of his technically older brother (I'm pretty sure that's how the story goes, but anyone can feel free to correct me).

The first born has the most potential, the most social power, and in some cases, first in line to carry on the business, the kingdom, the family name, etc. It's a point of contention but it's a position that is more curse than anything. I'm the First Born Son of the First Born Son in my family and there was a lot of pressure put on me to be better than my cousins and sister, to set an example for them. Now, I'm the farthest behind anyone. Now, I don't talk to my father. And I've never been happier. Yet that stinging, wrenching feeling of perceived failure will always be there.

I'm sure someone has mentioned this, but my immediate mental link when watching this movie was to Princess Mononoke. Especially the creatures of the forest, the apes and the unicorns-- reminds me of the wolves, boars and monkeys fighting against the humans. Some of the animation, like the blob monster, is really similar to the cursed boar at the beginning of the film, too. It was really fucking strange getting that sense of deja vu whilst watching care bears in the trenches. Genuinely shocked to never hear it listed as an actual source of inspiration for the creator cuz it seems so intentional; either way, it's an incredible movie with all the shock & horror advertised via trailers, plus a shit load of gorgeous animation and a mindfuck of a story. Super Enjoyed it!

Waitwaitwait this isn't just Bambi this is The Last Unicorn. With warmongering Care Bears. Down to the animation style of the forest when Unicorns are involved, this HAS to have some Rankin and Bass visuals plus original author Peter S. Begal's themes inspiring it! And now I'm leaving the review only halfway in to go watch it. Which basically means: Job well done, sir.

i'm in film school currently, and i watched this at a time where i was burnt out with all of the "classics" that were boring me, and i genuinely considered changing my major because i was so bored with the classics and what they were teaching at the time. (plus, i've always been more of a horror/thriller person) but i watched this with my friend in a cramped dorm room, and i watched every single bit of it from beginning, and even through the credits. now, that's a feat for me, since i'm autistic and can't hold my attention on things during long periods of time, but this film GENUIINELY captivated me, and i think its reinvigorated my love for horror/horror-adjacent films, and just film in general. and that's the highest honor i can give a film.

Depends on what film school you are. Artistic theatrical movies and Hollywoodian movies don't intertwine but are often mingled. A horror movie is a commercial one, the artistic movie of that is an antiwar movie, an authoritarian government's prison movie etc.
I'm not a student or that passionate about movies but I know from art school the focus is not on memorizing but understanding the era works belong to and the overall message. It stimulates creativity

The director has brought out some other wonderful flicks I think GKIDS brought out too like "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" "Summer Wars" and "Wolf Children".

I think that the unicorn represents nature, Tubby represents our love for nature and our general kindness, and Bluey represents how ideologies can affect us, we are part of nature and we love it, and we can be very kind creatures with people helping others out with the sole intention of making other people happy, but sometimes our ideologies and desires get in the way and we rip ourselves to shreds.

And then other replies "actually I'm the oldest because the position meant that i was first, thats why you were closer to the exit". None of them hates the other twin, but if they did maybe that factor could play a role in it.

I feel like the ending represents the rebirth of humanity. Not only with a human(oid) leading a pack of Simeons as a leader should, but seemingly to start a whole new race of species.
And the fact the humanoid was made with the few meanings Maria, Bluey and Tubby held, births a new start to more madness and war. A new humanity, a new war. But that's just my theory lol.

I paused, went to watch Unicorn Wars and am back. It is so beautiful and means so much. The references are very obvious, from My Neighbour’s Totoro and Princess Mononoke (which are also shown in GKids’ Gallery) to Cain and Abel (which was just an unexpected cliche) It was just pure mental due to the cuteness the bears had. Talks a lot about how looks do put a major impression on the mind. And of course The animation is just too gooood

I know with my own siblings we used to het really mad at each other over dumb things because we'd continue to escalate the situation, neither of us wanting to admit to "losing" the argument. As we got older we got better at communicating but many people don't especially if parents or peers specifically pin them against one another

I have a personal theory about Tubby and Bluey's parents. I believe they only got married because the mother bear got pregnant. The couple were never in love and only married to not cause a stir with their religious community, but when Tubby came along the mother treated him like a miracle baby. Something good in her unwanted marriage. Then, Bluey came along and he was just an accident until the father bear (with no word to his wife or first born) carried Bluey away robbing the child of bonding with his mother, and later trauma dumped on Bluey which lead to his downfall as an adult.

Blue hated & despised his mother after breaking his father heart & spirit.
Even more so since he saw the betrayal first hand & saw her action of picking the same flowers her lover gave her as a further insult to injury.
He hated his brother because he knew after that moment that he probably is his half brother.
The punishment he dishes out constantly on Tubby is revenge for what his mother had done.

Hey man! Big fan of both your videos and Alberto Vazquez’s work. Now that you’ve watched Unicorn Wars you should definitely check the rest of Alberto’s catalogue! Birdboy and the forgotten children is one of my absolute favorite films but also his short films are great!
Also, fun fact: Alberto is a self taught animator. I was once lucky enough to attend a masterclass of him in an animation festival where he explained back when he made the original short that inspired this film (the short is called Unicorn Blood) he was an illustrator but didn’t know how to properly animate. He didn’t know how to animate on computer, so made all the drawings (in ink and watercolor) and scanned them to give animation a try.
    He is a BEAST 🔥

When I was born my brother was 2. He instantly hated me. He would constantly try to kill me when I was only days or months old. Not hurt me. Kill me. At 2 or 3 year old constantly trying to murder your infant brother any chance you get. From that point on my brother could not be trusted near me or my little sisters. His reasoning for this was that everything was perfect till I came along and ruined everything. He told me that when I was like 3 or 4. I didn't understand what he meant till I was older.
