I used round wounds exclusively( for 30 years) until I bought my Warwick Corvette fretless (5 years ago) which came with flat wounds. I now have re-strung all my basses with Thomastik Infeld flat wounds and love the feel and sound.

Anyone have any clue which kind was used by Paul Simonon of the Clash? I love the way the bass sounds in the Clash’s music. Guessing he might have used the flats.
I’m new to playing bass and so far I’ve only used the roundwounds that came with my bass, but very interested to try the flats.

Hey man, maybe it´s late but here is what Simonon used.
For most of the time(or atleast for the sound you're going for)he played a cream colored fender p-bass with a black pickguard with a pick(the pick is really important for the tone). The strings to get are Rotosound Flats, which are extremly bright flatwound strings that were used exclusively in the 60's and 70's. Use all downstrokes unless you really can't

Nice video, Thanks, good tips, so what would you prefer on a fretless ? Round or Flat ? BTW, SWEET PLAYING ! Philip.

I mostly use rounds but my fretless has a very “Jaco” tone naturally so rounds have always been better for me.
      Cheers for the comment!

I use flats exclusively…and to me flats are Thomastik jf344, mostly for P basses…
Anyway…if you want to make a comparison between two string types it’s better to string the same bass, or the same bass model

Hi. Are Flatwounds more melodic and musical than Roundwounds? Thanks

Does playing with a pick damage the coating on the Elixir strings?

not really a fair comparison. he’s comparing roundwound on a j-bass and flatwound on a p-bass

Do you have any tips to help combat the "stickiness" that the flats produce on your plucking hand? Someone suggested baby powder to me once, but that's just messy.

@@OnlineBassGuitar1 It sure does. Thanks for the feedback.

Wash your hands. If they later start to stick, rub the bridge of your nose with your plucking fingers. Works a treat.

I don't trust people who don't like flatwound strings. Especially on a P-Bass.
