    In this video, I give an analysis on The Lost World by Michael Crichton. Here, I look at the second Jurassic Park novel critically and give my thoughts on what I think of its quality. This is the last book review for the Jurassic Park series and this particular chapter happens to be a favorite of many. It's based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle book of the same name yet this Jurassic Park 2 is actually a bit different. Is The Lost World Remake as good as the original?...Well I don't really know haha :D

      For sure. As a child I was afraid of the dark, like many kids. But it wasn't the dark I was afraid of; it was the thought of something out there lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to pounce. That scene plays into that fear brilliantly. All seems calm at first, a little too calm. Then the breathing starts and it just escalates from there.

    I may have a theory as to why there were no guns brought by dodgson, and I can't remember if this was ever touched on in the novel or not. But here we go, and this is just my theory. But 1. Dodgson is pretty short sighted in the eyes of progress, and especially profit. When describing his past endeavors with biosyn, all of his shady doings showed a sheer lack of vision. He was only occupied with the big picture and how to get there right now. Which is why he was pretty much always in hot water with the people above him. He couldn't really see past his own nose, so to speak, and it makes sense he would hatch a half assed plan without thinking about the more intricate details, like a hard top jeep, a battery cable that won't come unplugged, a better plan than stealing eggs, a gun, or an actual team of mercenaries to protect him while on the island. All he could think about was
    1 go to island
    2 steal eggs
    3 ?????
    4 cash check.
    And it shows in his personality that is he a get rich quick scheme kind of guy, instead of putting in the hard work to get the results, he wants to just take shortcuts.
    The second reason he didn't bring a gun: the dinosaurs are treated ad massive investments and are really quite rare creatures. I'm not sure if he realizes this, but if he wants to make money off them, they have to be alive and shooting them all to death wouldn't make him money if he wanted to return later to take them off the island.
    I could also add here that he isn't a military man or hunter, just a greasy business man who is waaay in over his head, so the idea of having a gun might have honestly never occured to him. Also, he'd need a pretty powerful gun to stop a rex, and one that is still powerful and fast firing to stop a raptor, something he wouldn't be able to operate with any effect as proved by his failure to maintin the sonic emitter. I'm not trying defend dodgson here, just trying to add some depth to his character that wasn't explicitly stated in the novel.

    • @WhyTho525
      @WhyTho525 2 года назад +12

      I don't think he reallly cared about the safety of the dinosaurs as he only wanted to steal the eggs. So the first option seems more likely.
      As much as I loved this book, Dodgson's plan of stealing the dinosaurs didn't make that much sense. Also there was no conflict between the two teams. But that's my only complaints, besides the dinosaurs dying off again.

    • @Redmanticore
      @Redmanticore 11 месяцев назад

      as greedy as businessmen are, they are also selfish cowards hiding behind lawyers and bought security, and dogson would have not entered the island himself, after the 1st fiasco where everyone died.
      in the first book he went himself because he was ignorant of the threat, everyone was. it was just an island visit as any.
      he would've used mercenaries to pick it up for him. they are expendable to him. talked with them through satellite phone, give them pictures of what to get.
      being a cheapskate, he would've bought the cheapest mercenary option. they would've been chaotic amateurs with cheapest soviet union surplus stuff.
      (soviet union had collapsed 4 years ago at the time of releasing the book, and was likely just collapsed at the time of writing the book, so black arms deal market would have been flooded with cheapest soviet union stuff at the time of writing, if Michael Crichton did his research on the subject at the time. following the collapse of the soviet union in 1991, vast numbers of light weapons were released from controls and entered the international arms market.)

      I kind of thaught the book was pretty badly written, honestly. Also, I know that Dodgson was a scumbag, but There is something disturbing about a human kicking another human into the mouth of a T-Rex for seemingly no reason except for petty impulsiveness

    Also I found the entire thing was tremendously cynical- even by JP1 novel standards- and actually had this whole self-mockery about it, taking pot shots against the first novel and constantly showing how much Crichton famously hated writing sequels. I mean, the two names for the island are Isla Sorna and Isla Gemido. AKA, "Sarcasm Island" and "Groan Island". It's hilariously on the nose if you pick up on that.

I think that one felt more like a descriptor of what was in the book and that you like it a lot, while this review goes more into analyzing those topics rather than just stating them. Which is great, it made this video a lot more engaging than I expected it to be!

    I finished reading the book recently a few months ago and I had exactly those same impressions. Every scientific and philosophical part is incredible and everything we learn about the behavior of the raptors helps to explain many things within the film and helps to support very well how Owen Grady trained the raptors.

    To be fair, the sound device worked until one of them tripped over the cable, causing it to disconnect and shutting down the device - granted, I doubt it would have lasted against the T-Rexes in the long run, but they might have got out of that situation at first. Still no excuse not to take guns, simply because it *might* not work.

    • @Jdabomb93
      @Jdabomb93 Год назад +1

      Literally all Dodgson did, was turn his body too much, till it unplugged. And then sat there motionless like an idiot, thinking the Rex didn’t see them, when they actually did.
      If he just plugged it back in? He would’ve probably been able to keep these animals at bay for sure, because it was working just fine when he used it. (I’m guessing he got all the eggs (or most of them) on the island with this plan.
      Though a gun would’ve still been excellent for back up and self defense when all else fails.

    • @Kultmannen
      @Kultmannen 7 месяцев назад

      And right after, fully grown men was supposed to believe, and bet their lives on, that the greatest predator of all time, could only see them if they moved... I mean, could they even see their own eggs if they couldn´t see movement? It´s a ridicolous premise, and the author should not have made his humans behave that stupidly.
      I felt there was many of these strange contrived human actions, in the book, just there to fuel som intended goal by the author. But completely illogical. I mean, what human on earth, would kidnap a pair of T-rexes children just to give it first aid. And then act if they are oblivious to the danger of doing something like that.
      Just so poorly written.

    The Lost World and Jurassic Park were some of the best books I've ever read. I got chills when they dropped that candy bar wrapper and the velociraptor picked it up and looked at them in the high hide and when Thorne realized that the fence was actually two Carnotaurus. I was 13 when I read the first book and remember being soooo scared. I love the movies as well, and both the films and books have had a huge impact on my life. Keep up the GREAT work Klayton! I'm not going to lie. Take it how you will. This is my favorite book. And my problems are with trying a little too hard to explain things realistically. Malcolm lectures so frequently and on complex subjects I can't blame someone for skipping those parts. And the Climax isn't glorious, neither was the first book. But it's not as memorable either.
    I get why it wouldn't be as popular. But I don't see it as having a problem because of Antagonists. It was different not to have them directly interact much, and I feel that they didn't have to in the books context.

  • @nope5657
    @nope5657 6 лет назад +29

    As I've said in the video for your "Jurassic Park" review, I find this book simply far more entertaining than the first. The science fiction babble is less encyclopedic in presentation (although Malcolm does tend to stop and exposite far too much), most of the characters feel more fleshed out and human - whereas most of the characters in the first novel are strictly two-dimensional people used to push the narrative forward.
    TLW generates a more sinister tone I prefer to the original novel, creating a more overtly horror/adventure feel I prefer. The action is wonderful and the last third of the novel I find more engaging than the first novel despite the slight fizzle with the very end.
    You make some good points regarding the some of the narrative issues and I can't honestly fault your take. But for me, they simply don't amount to too much of an issue.

  • @madieu8955

    For me, TLW is one of best things in JP franchise. I like plot development in this book far more than first book plot development, it's more mysterious and dark. It's teasing reader slowly, building up true importance of site B (and it changes a lot of things- reading JP again after TLW is great). And the dinos- they're more like animals now, less like creations and far more like incarnations of "life finds a way"
    Also, hella good review!

      And that's why I think the author did this on purpose. He was forced to write a sequel. He didn't like writing sequels from what I heard... so it seemed to me... Levine was Spielberg. Arby was a character created that Hollywood would never allow (a black nerdy kid who doesn't like sports and dresses in button down shirts...- course we DID get Franklin in Fallen Kingdom) Malcolm sings or whistles DIXIE at one point and Harding sings "wash that man right out of my hair"... and not much of an ending. They find a small motor boat and leave... that's it! I love the book and the cam dinosaurs but the characters don't mix very well... Dodgson ' s team isn't too smart... a dinosaur gets "randy" on a vehicle. .. etc etc... felt like he was trying NOT to make movie material. And then I movie barely went by the book except a few main characters and a few main scenes and the location... that was it. Santa Claus wasn't killed off IN the first movie so Hammond was stil alive to say "Bring Malcolm in here so I can tell him about Site B!".... uh!? Half the mystery of the book was FINDING Site B!!!

The only thing I'm disappointed you didn't mention was the stark contrast of Malcoms strong desire to go to the island in comparison to his character in the first novel. Spielberg knew this and crafted the character in the movie to absolutely not want to go at all, only being forced to when finding out Sarah was there.

      / Madieu what are you talking about one shot from a 50 cal would blow a hole in a rex in fact an elephant gun would probably be enough to ward it off I don't even know what your talking about here Dodson had a really dump plan with no back up at all the problem isn't the sound box the problem is that he didn't bother to have a backup plan to protect himself in case the plan went south and just guess what happened in the novel.

    • @madieu8955
      @madieu8955 6 лет назад

      Bennett Fender I'm talking exactly about that. He needed plan B but guns werent good plan b. If you know something about hunting, you know that at this range it would be impossible to take down t-rex, maybe shot into brain would be enough, but it's low chance of hitting that spot. Half inch bullet into something different than skull would only piss off rex (maybe bleed it out after long time), and remember they had two of them standing in front of them. Look up on elephant hunting and imagine something two times harder to kill.

    • @bennettfender1546
      @bennettfender1546 6 лет назад +1

      / Madieu there's a place called the chest kind of where people actually aim when hunting like I said an elephant gun like Roland's 600. Nitro Express would be enough to down a rex with a single bullet to the chest how do I know this because no matter how strong T.rex is the chest region at least most likely couldn't tank a shot from a gun that strong maybe the skull can but most sensible people aim for the chest when hunting it's bigger and still ensures a swift kill either way the fact he didn't even bother to bring a gun as back up just makes Dodson look like a moron.

    • @madieu8955
      @madieu8955 6 лет назад

      Bennett Fender yeah but aiming in chest results in "smoking". That's bad idea when you want take down animal fast, usually they run few hundred meters even after heart/lung shot.

  • @tonylane941
    @tonylane941 6 лет назад +2

    Dodgson was hoping for a quick "in and out" mission. He was so arrogantly confident in his plan that he made as little preperation as possible and didn't waste any money on adequate resources. They had a boat, and a jeep, and that was it. He had tried and failed numerous times to get a hold of Ingen's technology, so Biosyn became impatient with him, and refused to give him more assistance in his efforts. Dodsgon's plan was a last ditch, hastily scratched together project. Hence the lack of guns and other precautionary measures. I think it actually perfectly sums up how impulsive and arrogant he was as a character.

I can't imagine what would happen to Dodson and his crew if they were trying to steal raptor eggs. But I see what you mean with Dodson not bringing any real weapons on their mission. Even Malcolm's team had those snail darts and the mercs in JP 3 had an arsenal.

    This is one of my all time favorite books. I just re-read it for the first time in 25 years. I think I was 11 when I first read this - it was the first real novel I had read and really kick started my love of reading. Prior to this it was all Goosebumps and other YA stuff. The books stand alone from the movies in my mind - the themes and tones are completely different. A truly faithful adaptation of this novel would not have fit with the theme of the first film, but I can't help but think that this novel would translate into a great 10 part series on Amazon or Netflix.

    Great video, Klayton! I disagree with your analysis of the antagonist, however. I think that Crichton was deep into 'chaos' and the character of Malcolm when he wrote the book. He had clearly just read Stuart Kaufmann's "The Origins of Order" which was published during the years he was writing the book (1993). He borrows heavily from this text and even quotes it in the opening page. I believe the overarching protagonist in the book is the 'system' itself. In other words, the research operation is a system teetering on 'the edge of chaos'. Like the quote exemplifies, the 'complex regime' conveys a false sense of stability, but the smallest variables can lead to catastrophic changes in behavior and a ragged descent into chaos. That is what Dodgeson and his team provide. I think it is important that they do not make contact for this very reason. The impact on the system is when they break the infants leg. This is the tiny change that tumbles the otherwise stable system into chaos. I believe this was intentional. If the two teams interacted, it would have been about the two teams. Instead, the theme remains 'order and chaos'.
    Crichton was a genius, no doubt. His first novel, which I believe was his way of expressing deeper convictions using Malcolm as a vessel, had just been made into a blockbuster which largely ignored the true essence of the character in order to fit the hollywood mold. He was then asked to write a followup, and I can detect angst in his writing. Notice, Malcolm is a disabled character from the outset. I think this represents Crichton's frustration. Bringing him back tongue in cheek is a middle finger to watered down entertainment. I think he really wanted a novel that focused on the concept of control and chaos. Thus, he made these abstract concepts the antagonist and protagonist, respectively.
    I actually enjoyed the second book more in most parts because of the heavy science and greater insight into the character of Ian Malcolm.
    That's just my two cents. I absolutely love your videos. Keep it up.

    I really appreciate the honestly with this review. Their are narrative shortcomings now you bring them up. It doesn't detract from the themes or story but it does seem clear it was rushed. When you know your history, you'd know that Crichton wrote the book for the movie. It's by definition a cash grab sequel. And was written in two years compared to the JP novel. I honestly prefer the movie wholeheartedly, but still think that even for a 'cash grab' it's still one of Crichton's best works.

    I read both of the novels and I must say, everything is so fast, but in a good way. Like the ending of each book swift and ends within a page or two. My favourite parts of the first novel is when the Juvie Rex hunts that guy (I forgot his name lol) and the adult Dilo eats dennis and slashes his intestines out as he holds them, and the rex waterfall scene where Lex and Tim are behind the Waterfall and the rex uses its tongue to drag Tim towards its jaws. I love so many parts of the first and second novel but those are just a few, and the second my favourite part is 100% the part where Levine goes outside the store / gas-station to the shed and the two camouflage Carnotaurus are stalking him. Also when Eddy Car dies in the novel he dies so damn quickly, like he falls off the high hide and the raptors just rip him to shreds and drag his corpse to the Raptor nest in like 2 sentences. It’s amazing how short moments like that can be some of the most memorable and best parts of the books. Rest in Peace Michael Crichton.

    What is reviewer is missing is that the conflict is not necessarily between characters.
    Like 'The Dark Knight' is about the 'soul of Gotham,' this movie is about the arrogance of man and it's tendency to be blinded by self-interest. It also speaks to how mankind is being lead to the brink of chaos (and extiction) by it's carelessness / recklessness surrounding technological advancement. This reliance of technology explains why Dodgson brought the sound machine instead of a gun. It fits the character haughty and reckless nature. Dodgson is merely an avatar for the real antagonist here: the vagaries of human nature.
    In short, the book is really asking whether man is actually going to destroy itself during this period of technological adolescence. That's the real conflict here.
    The reviewer is reading this as a character driven story, but it is really a theme driven story.

  • @goth_fraggle
    @goth_fraggle 5 лет назад

    First of all: I love that you are so honest and not just fanboying over it simply because it's JP media.
    But yeah...I kinda agree. The book has some really fun action stuff and the scientific parts are really interesting...but in my opinion they don't mix at all.
    The first one had some heavy exposition as well with a whole lot of overexplaining and techno-babble...but it happened in believable situations. I mean, the whole tour through the genetic labs was a bit on the nose but it made sense in the novel, so you don't mind to get that exposition dumb. After that big chunk is done, you only get a bit of it here and there.
    In LOST WORLD...the book just takes a full stop every two pages so Malcolm and/or Levine can monologue. And it feels sooo condescending. AND it's cheesy as well. Like, Malcom takes a million chapters to come to his revelation about WHY the dinosaurs went exting because he gets interrupted every time. It's like in a teen flick where the girls wants to ask out a guy but every time she gets herself up to do it, the school's marching band goes by or whatever and interrupts them, so she has to try later.
    The book really feels like it's just swtiching between action scene and heavyhanded exposition and then that's it.
    The characters aren't that great either. book Malcolm really works better as a secondary character like in the first novel, but as a protagonist? Jesus christ do I hate him in the second book. He's too preachy and I also don't think he makes much sense. He wasn't a dinosaur expert in the first novel. Just a mathematician who was asked to look over the data of the park. And in the second one he suddenly knows all kinds of stuff about paleontology. It's weird. I really don't get why neither book nor film went with Grant for the protagonist. Well, at least movie-Malcolm is likable in the second film because he's Jeff Goldblum.
    Then there are the other characters---Levine is annoying as hell, the kids are fine but a bit too smartass for me, Thorne and Eddie and Sarah are good but get way to little screen time.
    Yeah and Dodgson and his stooges are wasted.
    TBH I think the book is kind of a chore. I love the action scenes but that enjoyment is lessened by the fact that whenever I get into it, Malcolm stops the plot for a lecture.
    Still recommend it because it's JP and has dinosaurs :D It's not bad...just...okay

      Conan Doyle did write several sequels to Lost World but none of them feature dinosaurs. In fact they became progressively weirder. The first sequel was called The Poison Belt in wich Challenger and his friends shelter themselves from the apocalypse. The second sequel The Land of Mist was had Challenger dealing with Ghosts. Yes. Ghosts. It was essentially propaganda for Doyle's belief in spiritualism.

    Guns wouldn't have done shit. Dodgson knew it.
    “The thing about these damn dinos is that they have distributed nervous systems. They don’t die fast, even with a direct hit to the brain. And they’re built solidly; thick ribs make a shot to the heart dicey, and they’re difficult to cripple in the legs or hindquarters. Slow bleeders, slow to die.” -Robert Muldoon.
    Now I know the protagonists had dart guns with fast-acting poison, but Levine got them because he was extremely rich and knew cutting edge technology.
    "...as [Levine] unzipped the dark-green backpack, and began to assemble the big Lindstradt rifle. The rifle had been specially manufactured for him in Sweden, and represented the latest in animal-control technology."

    In the nest part, I was thinking like 'Why they didn't get a gun? are they stupid?' When I finished The First book I was scared that the lost world wouldn't be good as the first book and atmosphere of the first book for me The Lost World film didn't have the same atmosphere as the first film but it was still good but I feel sad that awesome action scenes were not in the film. Spielberg was like 'hmm... There is a lot of action scenes and they are all awesome whatever I'll just get 1 action scene from the book' but still, The Lost World book and film are awesome but I think that book is a little bit better than the film that's just my opinion I love both of the film and book.

There were dinosaurs on Sorna for 5 years so why did they just appear now? And how did they manage to do that without people going in an out of the island?? Help

    • @waterloo32594
      @waterloo32594 11 месяцев назад

      It’s been a while since I’ve read both books, but I think just it’s a plot hole. In the first book, a few dinosaurs (raptors and compys) make to Costa Rica. But the end of the novel has Isla Nubar napalmed and implied that the government was hunting down the dinosaurs that made it to the mainland.
      It’s not the only issue I found. I don’t remember dr. Malcolm telling anybody (specifically dr Levine) about Ingens work on isla nubar, or really mentioning the events of the first book until they are on the island. I may be confusing things from the book and movie, but Ian seems unnaturally eager to go rescue dr Levine from an island that he knows had dinosaurs on it at some point. He would have known roughly what Ingen was doing with the data recovered from the computer and all the clues he had collected. And how did site b remain undiscovered by the Costa Rica or US governments? Ingen went bankrupt and a lot of lives were lost at Jurassic Park. The two governments knew there were dinosaurs(they specifically razed the island to stop them spreading), so wouldn’t they have investigated Ingen, and then found and at least tried to destroy site b? I get they need the site for the book, but a little more explanation on the authors part would help make it more reasonable. It feels like MC forgot most of the first book when writing the sequel, and there’s plot holes and weird things that the editor should have caught.
