- Why I left the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as a new grad registered nurse.
Many of you who follow me on my Instagram may remember that I shared on my stories a couple of months ago about leaving the NICU which resulted in an influx of DMs asking me about it. I decided to create a Q&A at the time to answer some of the most common questions. However, leaving the NICU was a very difficult decision for me to make and I was having a hard time sharing this vulnerable part of my life with the public. I was navigating feelings of “failure” as a nurse and questioning if I was cut out to be a nurse to begin with. Since then, I have fortunately been able to move forward, and I am now in a much better place that fits my needs. I finally felt ready to share about this with you and I have answered some of the most common questions that I had saved from the Q&A.
Stay tuned for my guide titled: How To Land A Job in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit!

I'm starting my second quarter of nursing school for my RN, and I love your videos.
Thank you for sharing your life, it's inspiring.
Well, I've taken the exams for the 2nd time now and still didn't succeed, i wonder how those who succeeded did it. 😭💔
I failed twice, i lost money to reviews that never helped but the major thing is that l've not lost hope.
NICU Exam is really frustrating, I can't believe I failed again after studying so much. 🤦♂️💔😭
So sorry to hear you guys complain of failing the exam. But I will assure you that NICU Exams won't be a problem to you anymore,if you work with someone like MRS CATHERINA ALISON
After using different review Materials I still fail the exam twice , I never knew i could ever pass the NICU, but today I’m very happy, I just passed my NICU on my second attempt with a great help from MRS CATHERINA ALISON
As a RN (registered nurse) I'm not afraid of loosing my job or quitting my job because I learnt how to save to invest putting my money back to work to make more money. I'm not just after the money but the freedom to live on my terms
@Camila Santos yeah I make 3k as extra income from my investing trying so much to build more side hustle and extra income
You're doing great keep it going @Bashir Auwal
There's a lot of investing options real estate, stocks, ETFs, crypto but my best advice get a professional lead you into profitable one and make good financial decisions
I work with Rachel Blanc, growwealthywithrachel
She's a great expert and has been influential in my financial journey, I recommend her to everyone
Investing should be everyone's top priority now. You'll be ecstatic with the decision you made today in a few months
It takes 12-18 months to begin feeling competent as a nurse. Experienced NICU nurses (at least on my unit) are always a resource person for the newer nurses. If you are uncertain about anything, ask an experienced nurse. We would rather you ask a million questions than have you afraid to look stupid for asking too many questions and harm your baby. We hire almost exclusively new grad nurses on our unit, so we always have several new nurses on the unit.
Thank you for your message! I agree with everything that you said! I was lucky that all of my preceptors encouraged me to ask questions and always helped me whenever it was needed.
If possible, do you mind sharing what hospital you are currently working in that hires new grad nurses? I’m sure several students or new grads watching would love to know!
That’s why it’s a journey, you never know where you will go next (: looking forward to your vid (:
Absolutely, I completely agree with you! Fortunately there’s so many avenues that nurses can take which means that we have a good chance of finding something that best suits us ❤️
I’m a new grad in the nicu coming up on 10 months, I completely understand everything you said it’s so tough
That’s amazing! Congratulations on your nursing journey! All the babies and families are lucky to have you as their nurse! ❤️
I’m in the NICU as a new grad & everyone is super nice but I’m just not feeling it. I find myself really missing trauma from my RT days so I’m wondering if I should switch to the ER
I am with you, I quit a job in maternal child health after two weeks of nights, realized the night shift life was def not for me, I cannot sleep during the day!
Agreed! Night shift is not for everyone. I definitely saw a difference in my physical and mental health once I switched back to day shift. I don’t think I can ever work nights!
I love the honesty of this! I worked in the nicu in 2 years and I’m so tired of nights 😢( actually rotating )
Yessss nights are not for everyone! I knew my limits and knew that it simply wasn’t for me.
I’m a new grad in Nicu and it’s very discouraging how I’m expected to know so much off the top of my head in such a short period of time, especially when I lack reference points and haven’t been exposed to everything. I ask for a list or ask if i can write it down but i get told they’ll get me one and never do. And our protocol reference doesn’t have everything.
I may start in the NICU in the next month or so as a volunteer. I will be a senior citizen volunteer working with the kiddos. Many of the babies were born from mothers who abused drugs and alcohol. We care for these babies by holding them and caring for their basic needs.
Currently, I am a volunteer at my local VA Hospital. I help out in many different areas within the VA Hospital. I am a retired soldier and have 4,000+ hours of spending time with my fellow veterans.
Speaking of nights, the NICU wants me on duty at night. Aren't the babies sleeping? My work with the VA Hospital will be on the weekends.
babies never have a strict sleep schedule, they basically do whatever they want! in or outside the nicu
I work in neuro Trama ICU and Im considering leaving. It can be so stressful at times
Great video. Thank you for your openness. I’m a senior nursing student with a goal of becoming a neonatal nurse. The list of NICUs that you made would be very helpful but I don’t see it in your Etsy. Can we find it somewhere else?
Hey hun! Thank you for watching ❤️
My NICU guide just went live on my Etsy page today! Hopefully you find it helpful! :)
@@NurseIvyRN Thank you! I landed an incredible new grad opportunity as a Level IV NICU RN starting in July! 😊
