    You are beautiful inside and out Trish. When you talked about your single friend who is concerned about going gray due to ageism...whew, that hit me the same way it hit you, because that is my own fear! I’m 52 still looking for the love of my life AND just figuring out how I’m going to make a mark in this world - it scares the hell out of me to not be perceived as young and vibrant based solely on my hair color! I’m just shy of four months in, and I keep telling myself “It’s going to look very cool, like I have silver highlights.” I’m not going to deny, it’s a struggle emotionally. But I’m thrilled I came upon you in my search for “gray transition” inspiration. I’ve subscribed 🤗❤️

      Michele Rosenblum Oh my goodness! When I loved your comment, I replied as well and for some reason; my comment didn’t post. YT is acting up for me and it’s annoying! Let’s give it another try shall we?
      Thank you so much for your kind words and I’m so happy this video resonated with you. I totally get where you are coming from! I feel young and healthy and don’t want my hair color to define anything about me. But then why should it? It’s up to us to change that paradigm! But it is hard. And I’ve had some crap days for sure. But then I also had crap days when I was dying my hair where I felt not super cute or thought I looked “old” when I looked in the mirror. So it’s important to remember that too. It’s also helping to try to be neutral about my hair. Not hate it; and not love it. Just be with it. Kind of a nonjudgmental observer about what’s going on with it LOL.
      Feel free to reach out over on IG if you need some support!!! 😘 XOXO

    Yay you! After several years of thinking about it..,I finally ditched the dye and cut off the last of my dye at age 60 in December 2019. The growing out was rough...but I’m SO glad I hung in there. I wish I had done it sooner like you. Hang in there! It’s going to be gorgeous.

    I think your hair will look fantastic. It's also nice that your family is on board and that you have someone who's taking the journey too to share your experience with. You hit the nail on the head! It's not necessarily the grey hair....it's also the condition of your skin, how you dress, and your overall vibrance. Totally agree with you about the difference between women and men. So frustrating!

      Thanks Tanya! And yeah, it is frustrating, can you imagine a support group for men going gray? But it's where we are at this point in time and I'm glad that at least the conversation is happening and women are questioning why we dye our roots, even if we make the conscious decision to do so.

    Thanks so much for sharing your experience growing out your greys. I'm four months in and did pretty much the same as you describe in lightening your hair and using purple shampoo. I'm still basking in the freedom from covering my roots... just can't believe I waited till my mid-50's to do this. Also, regarding your comment about criticism of the choice to colour correct the dyed hair to ease the transition - I've noticed this too, with some ire; there's a doctrinaire attitude from some hardcore 'cold turkey' advocates... kind of like a virtue of some higher order to embrace the skunk line's potential for psychological and moral growth. Your hair looks great by the way, and I hope you make more videos of your grow out.

    • @TrishV1
      @TrishV1  4 года назад +1

      M Carmella Thank you so much for commenting! I honestly don’t understand that line of thinking, being critical of however a person chooses to grow out their gray. It’s such a personal decision and attitudes like that drive people away and make them feel inadequate. That’s why I’m staying on the fringes of it; and only follow a few gals that bring me silver inspo!

    Hi Trish. Thank you for the video. This video appeared in my recommended feed, as I have been searching and watching “Going Gray” videos for the past 6-8 weeks or so. I am with you on the grey hair grow out. I’ve had a silver stripe since 16, and went totally grey around 35. I love my stylist and she does a wonderful job with my color but I have been wondering about all the chemicals. I hate the time commitment, and the itching/burning scalp...every 4 weeks. To add insult to injury, the gray begins to sparkle out often two weeks! I turned 50 in October, had surgery in December, so last root dye and all-over color touch up I had done was in late November 2019. With recovery-time backing into quarantine, I am rocking 4-inch silver roots. I have committed to stop the hair dye, my husband and friends are pretty supportive. With you on this journey. Good luck!!

    My mom used to dye her hair black for several years and later developed lymphoma. Of course it's not known for sure whether the hair dye caused it but there is that possibility. I am 61 and have reached the point of no return as well about hair coloring. It's only been 2 months for me but I am determined to stick this out. Rock on, my silver sister! Hope to see more updates on your progress . ☺

      I've started adding some lowlights to break up the gray a bit, but no root coverage, so I feel better that the dye isn't touching my scalp.

    Your hair looks great, Trish! I too have very dark hair and colored for a long time (thinking my grays were very obvious in contrast). I finally trimmed off the last of my colored hair last summer, and I will never go back! It was definitely a process for me, both internally and externally, but it totally changed my life. That sounds dramatic, but I really have grown in confidence and feel so much more free to be myself. I no longer feel ashamed to let myself be me- naturally and just the way I am. You are right- this isn't something men really have to think about. Gray haired men are considered "distinguished," but women with gray hair are accused of "letting themselves go." I am so excited for this movement where women ARE letting themselves go- go free of society's demands and letting themselves go free to be the beautiful ladies they already are. Best wishes on your journey! I'm rooting for you (and also hoping that I get a cool white streak right in front). As an aside- you mentioned purple shampoo. Do you know of/are you using a "green" option? I haven't been able to find any so far.

    • @TrishV1
      @TrishV1  4 года назад

      I don't think that sounds dramatic at all, I totally get you! And thanks for cheering me on, it means so much! XOXO
      Someone else asked me about a "greener" option for the purple shampoo, and I got the Davines one, because that's what is at my salon. I know over the years I've heard that Davines touts itself as "natural" and sustainable. I'm not sure how accurate that really is, but maybe it's better than other brands? I honestly haven't looked into it that deeply. But in the long run I will only be using it maybe twice a month so I'm not too concerned about it.

    I loved this video, Trish! I think your hair looks as beautiful now as it always has. I'm 64, and have just recently started to go gray and I'm not going to dye it. My hair is naturally a streaky blonde, so the color change doesn't feel major except that at times I think hmmm...that's kinda mouse-colored now! I've noticed that I want to wear more color than I used to - maybe that's why so many women turn to dying their hair red when they are going gray?
    On a more serious note, I believe that it's important that we embrance aging. We are the elders and have the opportunity to fully own that and participate in society as such. We can't expect aging to be revered as it once was if we continue to demonstrate that we're terrified to exhibit any outward signs of its occurence. I think we have some responsibility in creating a new paradigm where every phase of life is respected and celebrated.

    • @TrishV1
      @TrishV1  4 года назад

      Holly D You said that so well Holly! We can create a new paradigm where we neither retreat into the background nor deny our aging. We can embrace it fully and healthfully and also not be ashamed at wanting to continue to be stylish and look our best, whatever that means for each of us. Thank you for speaking about the self criticism. I don’t know any women that truly feel good about themselves and that is a real societal problem. Letting our hair be natural seems like it shouldn’t be a big deal but it is. What a waste of time and energy. It is better for the environment in so many ways. And who knows what the chemicals do to our body. I am single and I have worried about dating while my hair is growing out. In my gut I know what is right. I’ve tried a few times and gotten to about 6 months and then I cave. Hopefully this time I won’t.

    I’m in my early 40s with similar brown hair to yours - I’ve never colored it (lazy and cheap). my stylist says I have virgin hair.. My grays have been coming in since my early 30s I think and I have just let them come in naturally. I get compliments all the time on my hair. I live in LA, home of the dyed head and people stop me almost daily to compliment my hair. As the grays have come in and grown out they’ve started to look like highlights. I personally think that gray hair is sexy on men and women and feel empowered by my natural crown.
    I did start using purple shampoo every week or two to take any dull brassy tone out and make the gray look more silver - it works well! Do you have a recommendation on less toxic options for blue/purple shampoos?
    Stay committed to the process, you will be so happy in the end!!

As for the purple shampoo, I got the Davines one, because that's what is at my salon. I know over the years I've heard that Davines touts itself as "natural" and sustainable. Wear it with pride. I haven’t colored my hair since 2008. And it was semi permanent. I’m just 43 and have streaks in my hair. Their is times some will look at those white hairs standing on end. Especially since mine are growing on. I have many younger woman ask who my colorist is... it’s natural. Society makes us chase our youth, and never supports growing old gracefully. Supporting our crones stage. Our solidarity of been there and doing that... come now. We are not the woman of their 50’s back in the 70’s and 80’s. Getting perms and pink or blue rinse on our short tight granny haircuts. Who knows.. but I doubt you’re one of them!
    It’s okay to age!!! We age! I want to support my aging. I’m okay with lines. My lips... my badges of laughter and bags of sodium... haha. Have we not earned our beauty... why should grey hair be coined old. I see it as wisdom. I see it as beauty. I don’t want to be that nip and tuck woman. I want to grow old and be human. Isn’t that life... I’m closer to 50 than 20... I don’t want to carry the hair I’ve had all my life when it’s changing on its own. It’s white... white... so I can’t wait to play with deep silver.
    Every year I get new stripes. It’s so exciting to me. I love it!!!!
    We are so much more fashionable and put together than the ladies of the late 20th century.

      Cheers to that! Bags of sodium...LOL. I love that and will have to use that one in the future! I wholeheartedly agree and am down with your sentiment on aging. It's truly a privilege to age and grow into our (hopefully) better selves each day.

    I am going through the same thing and my stylist did almost the same thing for me as far as the highlights. I have s dark hair as well and in my fifties.. the only thing he did was he covered the areas where the hair is next to my face where I part my hair. he said it would help me not feel the shock. He was totally for me going gray he said that I can always color it if I don’t like it.
    Good for you. Keep up the good work.

      Green Beauty Trish, that’s what I did after 10 weeks of no color. I still have the streaks of gray but not close to my face. 😀😀.. looks much better. But I agree with you, I wish it was easier to do it and the transition smoother but I think it does take some work. 😊

Not to mention, last year my agent asked me to get new headshots and after that $400 investment, I can't afford to drastically change my look... yet. Haha, I used Sun In! It made my hair copper/red. Oh also, if you come across a more natural purple shampoo, I'd love to hear about it! xoxo Cheryl

    Hi. I’m at two months now and curious about what my hair will look like. It seems like now grey hair is popular. Look at how many twenty year olds are purposefully dying their hair grey. I think it is about changing ideas of style and now is the time to go grey. I’m 65 and only considered doing this recently and for me it’s probably only because I see more grey haired women and the color often looks very pretty. There are women dying their hair colors that really are not even flattering on them so maybe natural is better if it’s styled well. I’m wondering how I’ll feel in the next few months!

    • @TrishV1
      @TrishV1  4 года назад

      I think it does have to do with liking how it's styled, and then I have to remind myself, that the same goes for no matter what my hair color is! I wish you luck if you decide to embark on the sliver journey! XOXO

    I got my first grey at 17 and I am now 30 .The time I saw my hair without any color ,five years ago,I was 35% gray.I might do some subtle highlights but I think my sliver streaks look cool against my dark hair.The grow out is a massive pain though.

    • @TrishV1

      It is a pain, that's no lie! There's an Italian woman on IG who has jet black hair and has grown out her grays cold turkey. No highlights, no toner, and she looks amazing. If I can remember her name I will post it here later for inspo. :)

    I love your gray! I don’t dye my hair and one hot gray, I actually like them. I have blk hair so it’s super noticeable. I’ve even influenced two ppl at work to grow out their grays.
    I’m going to leave this comment here but it’s not for you specifically. It’s that the word journey is so overused. It annoys me for some reason. Everything is a journey now, even going gray, eating certain foods, trying to wake up at 6 for a week, trying to stop drinking coffee, and other smaller life changes. It know it’s a word that became trendy to describe any experience. I just hope a couple other words start popping up in the vernacular so people can branch out and use another word.

    • @TrishV1
      @TrishV1  4 года назад +1

      I completely agree! I almost didn't want to use "journey" because it is so overused, but thinking upon it, it really does feel appropriate for this particular process. If a journey is "a long and often difficult process of personal change and development" then I would say this truly is a journey. Even after three months I can already see how this will be a process of change and development for me. It won't always be easy to put into words, but it will be transformative to a certain extent. But I hear you, there are buzzwords in our culture right now that seem to have lost their meaning like "journey," "resonate" "at the end of the day," "pop of color" LOL
