I met Lynne Thigpen in 2002 at a conference for advanced computer mapping software called GIS. She was appearing in "The District" at the time, and used the software on the show. I waited in line to get her autograph and when it was my turn, I pulled out the sleeve for my VHS copy of "Godspell" she got a big laugh out of it and showed it to some of her people behind the table before she signed it. I was the only one to have any "Godspell" for her to sign.
I was in both Godspell & Jesus Christ Superstar, one in HS & 1 my freshman year of collage. I have been in many musicals, even toured the US in a choral group & I can confidently say, of everything I did, these two musicals, about the life & death of our good Lord, still til this day move me to tears of sadness & also joy. It was, BY FAR, with the exception of having my children the BEST thing that has ever happened to me in my life & I will never ever forget those days, it's just something that has & will stick inside my heart forever as such a beautiful memory.
Today is Good Friday, April 4, 2019. I'm listening to this album for about the 100th time. It never goes out of style. The words mean the same today as they did centuries ago. The bible never changes. Tears are streaming down my cheeks as I think of what Jesus went through for you and me. He died for every single one of us, not just the rich, the talented, the just, but for you and me too. Long live God. He died for the forgiveness of the sins of each of us. His blood was shed for you and for me.
Years ago, I was John the Baptist in my high school's production of Godspell. During the 'Long Live God' section, everyone left the stage, carrying Jesus' body. I remained, and I was the voice that began the 'Prepare Ye' coda. I'm not a religious person, but this scene and this music still hits me hard. Crying now, actually.
My senior year of high school, ten years ago, I played Sonia and sang Turn Back, O Man. During On The Willows, we all had a special handshake or something that we'd developed with the young man playing Jesus. I gave him a gentle sock to the chin and he would do the same. At the last show, a few weeks before graduation, I couldn't help but grab his hand and look up at him. We were both sobbing. The whole cast was sobbing. This show is powerful whether you're religious or not.
We had a meeting close to production and a few of us had reservations about NOT having a Resurrection. So we did!! We choreographed a Resurrection and brought the house down every show! It was very emotionally moving for me and I actually wept on stage!
I know this feel. I'm not a religious person but a beautiful, emotional story is still a beautiful, emotional story. Not to mention Stephen Schwartz's music; if he wants you to cry you're going to cry. Man's a genius.
I think I was 9 years old when I first saw the movie of the musical and I was so moved by the whole thing! I was not quite aware of what the story actually entailed but I always kept it as a very special way of telling the Gospel. Even when I grew and learned all about Jesus and accepted him as my Savior.
I was sent to these videos by the Amazon series The Wilds. A girl in the series burst into song, singing "Day by Day." It took me a while, but I finally realized where I knew it from! Wow, that is such a blast from the past. We put Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar on stage at the Salisbury Repertory Theatre in Salisbury (Harare), Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) way back when. This takes me right back to my youth!
I was so lucky to see this on stage a long time ago. WOW! I have the original soundtrack also and just found "All Good Gifts Around Us" in a hymn book published in 1940! Brought me to this site.
Thank-You Patches and Face Paint. You really did your self proud. I was always in Loved with Godspell. It touched a cord within me, and I guess it will always will be that way for me. You brought it to life for me. :-)
Back in 96 I got busted for pot in the Cayman Islands. I was so afraid they kept me in the city jail for 10 days no access to a toilet in the same dirty clothes. Every day the prisoners from the prison would come in to go to court I got in fights with a couple of them by accident but I was nice. Then one night some roster boys were there and they sang to each other. They sang on The Willows. I picked right up and had Harmony. We finished at the song at the top of my lungs I made friends in prison that night. 2 days later I will cut loose and free. My Cayman friends will always be in my heart for life. I love you Brothers may we never be on the Willows captive. God Bless America
I don't remember the last time I listened to this. I saw a performance at college and I was moved by the music and message. Spotify has another version that I'm unfamiliar with but I believe that this version is the Broadway version.
I never figured it out till just now that Victor Garber the lead as Jesus Christ also played in the Titanic and many other movies and shows. I'm in shock I did not figure this out till just today. LoL....
I first saw Godspell when I was younger, and an Aunt was a pianist for the musical at a College Production and I got to see it 3 days in a row, every time, at this finale I cried. Today, Easter Sunday 4/11/2020, much like Jesus' Disciples, we have been told, "He is Risen", yet the Earth is in uncertain times. Masses online, they explain "be still and know that Jesus is with us" I thank God for my faith, because otherwise, I have no idea how I'd get through this. I am one of many choir aingers along with my wife, and wencan't wait to get back to church to sing and give Glory to God.
If you love this play, and feel spiritual about its meaning and yet do not, day by day, follow Jesus example of love, kindness, generosity, patience, forgiveness, etc., then you've, sadly, missed the point of his message. Every day I face people who are angry, sad, mean, selfish, envious, greedy, and I try my best to be nice, like Jesus has asked of us. Day by day.
Godspell was staged in my hometown of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil in the 70's by a group of local amateur actors. They were invited to perform in several cities in my country. It was a great success!
4:56 just love the transition to Day By Day. If we do a production, we’ll do that, and the bows will start at 5:21, the final chorus comes full circle at 5:47, and then we just roll with the 2012 revival ending of the bows.
I still have my cassette tape of the original London cast from 1971/2 and there's one song on it which doesn't appear in the film.I don't recall the title immediately but it's along the lines of 'Sheep on the right, goats on the left ......' I'd have to go dig the recording out of storage which would be a kerfuffle. Am I just imagining it or does this song actually exist? Still my all time favourite 'faith based' film/musical.
Look to Jesus & find a love far stronger than you have ever known. I am what is called a "chosen one" The Father & Son have saved me from 4 armed bank robberies, a terrible rear end car accident, 2 premature births; the 2nd one with the placenta alongside my daughter's head being pushed back inside the birth canal, etc. Realizing that my daughter's probation officer was an angel "who came out of nowhere & disappeared into nowhere." I could go on & on but I'd much rather you see for yourself. You'll be in my prayers always. Who knows, perhaps we'll meet in Heaven.
Same with me. Not a God believer but this musical just gets to my spiritual being and mind. I come back to listen to it over and over. It lifts me up and maybe even works on my subconscious. You hum the tunes all day. I love RUclips. I can look up a song and play it endlessly. I love Godspell.
i doubt it. the spark for writing the wall was roger waters' disgust with the audience during the "flesh" tour. it was based on waters' own life and on syd barrett, who was excluded from the band in 1968 following very erratic behavior onstage. the band did record several tributes to him, such as "shine on you crazy diamond."
At the end of the song, Paul Shaffer does the organ part during the closing credits of the movie!! That reminds me of the late Bob McGrath (with the kids) song "Groovin' On The Sunshine" (from 1970 "Bob McGrath From Sesame Street" album) at the 2:32 mark!! ruclips.net/video/gK1INME9fsc/видео.html
The same actor plays John the Baptist and Judas, which is actually quite intriguing, if you think about it. The other Disciples did not betray Jesus as Judas did, but they did abandon Him. Human beings are weak and fickle at the individual level, stronger together...
At 1:21 I kinda imagine that's how the actual Jesus (assuming this happened) felt. You know, like: "Oh shit. This is happening. HE's really not gonna call this off? REALLY? Like, I'm his kid. What the fuck." I'd love to hear to awkward conversation between Jesus and God when Jesus fully ascends. Like, "So.. DAD..."
"Oh God, I'm dead. Oh God you're dead" What is there to relate to? Followd by, "long live God"... 'Please prepare me the way of' that not being revealed as a load of shite.

Brill!
What a wonderful memory and keepsake!
What an awesome moment!
I'm not particularly religious but there's no doubt this is a beautiful soundtrack.

I used to watch this movie every Saturday before Easter until they stopped showing it on TV.
God is eternal but godspell shall be forgotten forever
Amen sister!
This song still moves me to tears!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤!!!!
Our God is an awesome God !!!
Love the finale music ! Blessed be God forever !
This score is still captivating almost 50 years after I first heard it!
For everyone listening at home (!), for whom you can't have a Holy Week/Triduum/Easter, *without* Godspell...Happy Easter! He is Risen!
I am in godsoell right now. BEST SHOW EVER

Something about Jesus Christ, His death, resurrection, and forgiveness affected you very deeply.
That was the Holy Spirit touching your soul! You don't have to be "religious" to have these things happen. God loves you!

I saw Godspell as a stageplay. It was mesmerizing. Stephen Schwartz's music still holds all the magic.

Magaluna IKR XD but none of my classmates got the entire reference to the bible.
I listen to this every Easter ....blessing my soul.
I know this song can be sad, but up lifting at the same time, they did a great job with the movie, watched it several times.
This song still gives me the chills.
I freaking Love this MOVIE!
Some time I need this in my life.
My brother did this in high school and he was cast as Jesus which was phenomenal! He managed to make me cry so haha😅❤️
I was so lucky to see this on stage a long time ago. WOW! I have the original soundtrack also and just found "All Good Gifts Around Us" in a hymn book published in 1940! Brought me to this site.
Loved this as musical live in Broadway in New York!
The Lord hasn't given up on you.
Thank you Jesus
our high school did this & did a excellent job...one of my favorite musicals...I have the soundtrack & dvd....
The best version I have seen of Godspell was at Fords Theatre. It was truly amazing
I saw it at Ford's Theater in 1973. I was overwhelmed with emotion.
@@elizabethpoole1880 Me too. It was the first play I ever saw (at Ford's) and I ended up pursuing a career in theatre.
Always relevant and deeply inspiring.
I have to say... the ensemble parts in the alternating beginning part are like a chorus of angels
Forever Jesus....Waiting foir the COMEBACKJ!!!!!
This movie was my childhood. Now I can't find it anywhere!!!! All I can do is listen to the soundtrack :(
Have you tried Amazon movies?
I just ordered a copy on Amazon yesterday and am very excited to rewatch it. You could order one too. 🙂
Always available on eBay for cheap.
Beautiful Blu-ray just came out. Amazon has it! Just ordered my copy

Our church youth group did Godspell. So much fun and great memories.
Wake -up people. God is not leaving us, we lose faith.
Long live God!🔑📝📬📓📖

The Spotify version may be the Broadway version but this one is the film version.
Doing this at my school i love this scene!
Still ideal music for Holy Week.
I never figured it out till just now that Victor Garber the lead as Jesus Christ also played in the Titanic and many other movies and shows. I'm in shock I did not figure this out till just today. LoL....
Same my dad showed me a few days ago

Now this is the right intro and guitar solo . I've heard other versions , that were just weak and watered down .
Amazing!!
Yeah it is amazing

LONG LIVE GOD! Jesus saves folks...FIND HIM NOW before THE FINALE
Elizabeth Diamond Taylor Amen! He will be here any minute now! We will dance to this at the wedding!
That's why I'm here, I'm studying up for that final exam!
Jesus (David Marshall) was in goal for Scotland against Serbia and took us to our first major championship for 22 years.
In the movie , this was the saddest things i have ever seen
Thanks for uploading a good deal of clips for us to enjoy.
My favorite movie!
3:10 Long Live God :)
Track #13 ....The perfect recap....
God is love
This scene and his voice is so moving
Thank you!
I seen that movie when I was 6 years old back in Marshall Town, Iowa on VHS
just saw on TCM again!
4:56 just love the transition to Day By Day. If we do a production, we’ll do that, and the bows will start at 5:21, the final chorus comes full circle at 5:47, and then we just roll with the 2012 revival ending of the bows.

Is apainfull scene
Such a bop
Even this old atheist loves this musical
Look to Jesus & find a love far stronger than you have ever known.
I am what is called a "chosen one" The Father & Son have saved me from 4 armed bank robberies, a terrible rear end car accident, 2 premature births; the 2nd one with the placenta alongside my daughter's head being pushed back inside the birth canal, etc.

Same here; a beautiful, emotional story is still a beautiful, emotional story whether religious or secular in origin.

4:43 EVERYBODY NOW
Did this influence Pink Floyd's "The Wall" ?
i doubt it. the spark for writing the wall was roger waters' disgust with the audience during the "flesh" tour. it was based on waters' own life and on syd barrett, who was excluded from the band in 1968 following very erratic behavior onstage. the band did record several tributes to him, such as "shine on you crazy diamond."
Prepare ye the way of the LORD! I know where i am going. Do you?
OOOOOOOOOH, YEEAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!
poopy poop Orlando? rome? Beijing? Paris? Tokyo?
I'm onna Highhhhwayyy to Hell
I’m already there
At the end of the song, Paul Shaffer does the organ part during the closing credits of the movie!! That reminds me of the late Bob McGrath (with the kids) song "Groovin' On The Sunshine" (from 1970 "Bob McGrath From Sesame Street" album) at the 2:32 mark!! ruclips.net/video/gK1INME9fsc/видео.html
Happy Easter all
As I recall Judas Iscariot stays, throughout the entire musical. Why?
The same actor plays John the Baptist and Judas, which is actually quite intriguing, if you think about it. The other Disciples did not betray Jesus as Judas did, but they did abandon Him. Human beings are weak and fickle at the individual level, stronger together...
Don't you think an intro of this song really resembles "Hotel California" by Eagles?
Pope. Francis..,PHILLY. 2015!!!
This song scares me because Jesus says oh god I’m dead
At 1:21 I kinda imagine that's how the actual Jesus (assuming this happened) felt. You know, like: "Oh shit. This is happening. HE's really not gonna call this off? REALLY? Like, I'm his kid. What the fuck." I'd love to hear to awkward conversation between Jesus and God when Jesus fully ascends. Like, "So.. DAD..."
well its supposed to be during his crucifixion
No offence bebe x but I've seen the stage musical and the movie is far better
Sounds very Pink Floydish sometimes
"Oh God, I'm dead. Oh God you're dead" What is there to relate to? Followd by, "long live God"...
'Please prepare me the way of' that not being revealed as a load of shite.
