High Nitrogen is a 100 year old growing practice. High phosphorous is a 50 year old growing method. High potassium is a modern way of growing. But the hardest part is figuring out how much to use. Like your collegue who doesn't know how to grow orchids, I don't think anyone really does. We either copy what someone else does who doesn't know any better either or we try to figure it out while not knowing exactly what works well and takes a lifetime to figure out. I have heard literally every different way of doing it by now, luckily phalaenopsis are amongst the most resilient and beginner proof orchids and do fine unless one pours some petrol on them or something like that. I wish they were all as easy.
