Can you buy the annuity directly from the insurance company and get a higher return? That commission is not costless to the consumer. (It is similar to a buyers agent saying his big commission costs nothing). On a $1million dollar immediate annuity I don't need $20k of my money coming out of the deal for a financial product that is so simple.
