  • Prof. Noam Chomsky warns about South Asian future, at PIDE Debate with Dr. Abdul Jalil (Professor of Economics at PIDE)
For Pakistan, to start a new journey on the right track, first of all, it has get itself free from the clutches of colonial legacy and institutions, said Professor Noam Chomsky - an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, social critic, political activist and also known as "the father of modern linguistics". He authored more than 150 books on range of topics. Chomsky was in conversation with Dr. Abdul Jalil, PIDE
Dr. Jalil asked about the academic view of the reasons behind Pakistan’s sad state of affairs; on economic front in particular. Moreover, if Pakistan has to reset, with the current circumstance, then where is the starting point?

It doesn't matter who comes to power in Pakistan. This country has been steadily sinking since Jinnah died. Look at Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc are all Islamic, but have given priority to economics. Islam is not a problem, some extreme 'Pakistani Muslims' and corrupt Military + Politicians + Madarsas are the key problem.

I think PIDE should get another moderator. While Dr. Jalil is a well-known and articulate economist in Pakistan in Urdu, his command of English and holding a deep discourse with heavy weights like Noam Chomsky (in English) was not good.
Also, his demeanour of “respect” (which comes from how we are told to respect our teachers in school in Pakistan) was on full display. This was not so much a debate, but a school lecture received like a schoolboy by Dr. Jalil. In the beginning and the end of the interview, I don’t know how many times Dr. Jalil thanked Dr. Chomsky and called him “Sir”…. the way I would shake my head from side to side at school when my teacher would say something. Why?
Why did’nt Dr. Jalil question Chomsky on why Chomsky thought that the United States did not follow their comparative advantage after the American Revolution? and as a result was set on a growth path. Explosively, why did’nt he question Chomsky on how education in Pakistan could change to follow his principles of “open mindedness”. Given that we are still an “Islamic” Republic, what Chomsky means by education and open mindedness, would not at all suit the likes of Dr. Jalil. Is Pakistani education ready to teach evolutionary biology to its children in grade school? Is it ready to keep the books of Salman Rushdie on it’s bookshelves? Is it ready to allow its children to question Islam (or any religion) and their faith through the books of Christopher Hitchins and Richard Dawkins? Are we prepared to teach our children that all citizens are equal, including Qadianis?
I think the problem is that “Development” has very little to do with “Economics”. It has everything to do with open mindedness, critical thinking, questioning everything without the fear of being persecuted (teachers, parents, army, God), equality of all citizens, rule of law, entrepreneurship, Justice, and respect for institutions.
The recent political turmoil in Pakistan has laid two things bare for all of us to see: First, that Pakistan’s elite are not there to serve the will of its people. Indeed, the Jagirdars, Waderas, and Sarmayadars - who are the current crop of law makers in Pakistan - are there to serve their own interests and hide their thievery. Second, that the future of Pakistan is ACTUALLY very bright. I mean, in which other country have people come out en masse to protest against these band of dacoits, and willing to fight for their rights in their millions?

I like most of the points you highlighted and the sense of hope you have for the bright future of your country. I like the way you summarized many many things like the question of education by Dr. Chomsky. Even though he is a great man and I honor him a lot, but still he and his likes always supported the state of Israel whose basis are purely religious/zionist. I feel religion is very personal to a people while the education doesn't mean to shun it off. We can be best Muslims and great intellectuals at the same time, provided we are taught how to think.

As Dr. Chomsky points out India and Pak can both benefit from action on water and climate change. That is a good starting point. That being said at this point it is impossible for South Asia to decouple from global economies. We are all energy dependent. An interesting dichotomy.

  • @aamirafzal3062

Firstly, for a country to prosper, it has to be free to do so. While looking that way, we know how free Pakistan and even India is from the external influence, especially the West. They can't survive without the outsiders. To build a home, we have to own it first and we know how dire the Pakistan's economy is. They already have more than 10 billion in debt. and they always require foreign aid to be rescued. Their failed economy is the outcome of their corrupt and inept governments, which have always been puppets. So it is a cycle of events which doesn't allow it to grow. And as Dr. Chomsky made it clear that the nations have prospered by crushing others, that explains the development by the others, which is not possible for Pakistan at the moment and in fact is a victim of it.
So it is not just education, open-mindedness or shunning off the orthodoxy which will free Pakistan from its shackles. Rather in addition, the hard work, resilience, resoluteness, harmony with the neighbors, great statesmanship of its people and a will to go forward without the foreign interference (for which they have to strengthen their institutions) that will uplift it and make a role model in the era we are living in.

Chomsky is a role model intellectual for the world. His comments on Pakistan are so apt because of his genius, his diligence, his modesty, his honesty, and his respect and regard for his interlocutor. There was not a whiff of arrogance towards what seemed at times to be simple-minded questions. The interlocutor in fact was rather good - and Chomsky instinctively knew that he was engaging not with the intellectual "elite" of Pakistan but with a person far more representative of the common perceptions of Pakistanis - and as such far more interesting.

    SIGNS OF ALMIGHTY ALLAH
    IN THE HOLY QUR'AN
We shall show them Our Signs in the Universe and within their own selves, Dunhill it becomes clear to them that He is the Truth
    (Qur'an,41:53)
A man can't see Almighty Allah therefore He manifested Himself in His Signs in the horizons (universe).
If we study and research the verses of the Holy Qur'an we will find many signs that will guide us to the existence of Almighty Allah.
One of His Signs mentioned in this verse:
و جعلنا السماء سقفا محفوظا و ھم عن آياتها معرضون o
And We have made the sky a roof withheld (from them). Yet they turned away from its portents.
    (Qur'an,21:32)
Our life on earth is secured from all kind of space attacks like atomic charged solar winds come from the Sun and space strikes.
Who can tell us 1500 years ago that our life on earth is protected by a protecting roof well guarded ?
What if there is no magnetic fields/shields?
Almighty Allah is the Originator of the universe and Creator of the Mankind. All such verses are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an guide us to the existence of Almighty

In order for the Pakistan military to abandon the deadly competition with India, Pakistani Muslims must acknowledge their ancestry, culture & history of having Vedic (Hindu) roots.
Second: Muslims in general must understand the basic concepts of sanatana dharma (Hinduism).
    Concepts such as 'murti'.
To understand murti we have to ask:
    can God have a form?
well, I have a form & you have a form.
How can God (being the source of everything) be missing a form?
God must have a form, yet the form of God is spiritual, not material.
God can be in all places at all times - we can't.
God can transform the spirit into the matter & vice versa.
What follows from these basic philosophical rules is that God can have an unlimited number of spiritual forms.
God being omnipotent (all powerful) can do that.
Murti is a form of God that is visible to individuals on a material level of consciousness.
    Murti is not an idol.
How does murit appear on a temple altar is another topic.
There are thick volumes that describe the process.
Idol worship is very popular among many religionists:
many Christians, Hindus, Muslems. Jews & other religious people worship idols.
Adoring cricket stars, movie stars or having money & power as the goal of life is proper idol worship.
Seeing one's religion as the only way to God is another.
This idea comes from pride, arrogance & greed.
God is not Muslim, Hindu or Christian.
    God is God!
Sanatana dharma has an extremely long history of respecting other religions & of helping them.
Simply ask the Parsis of India.
    Or the Jews.
Yet when a minority culture like Islam or Christianity starts to compete with the native one, no wonder there have been problems.
The reason that the Muslims & Christians undermine & criticise sanatana dharma (Vedic tradition) comes from their desire to convert the Hindus.
This desire (again) comes form pride in thinking themselves better.
Why did Muslims come to Bharat?
The conquest was motivated by greed & pride.
    The same with the Christians.
    Are we willing to cooperate?
Are we willing to respect one another?
Is the welfare of all in our hearts?
There will be no improvement in the relations between Pakistan & India unless & until these ideas are tackled & understood by Muslims.

We already know that our ancestors were Hindus or Buddhist and we have no problem in acknowledging that but when Indian insists on so called ''Ghar Wapasi'' this becomes Problematic.
Half of your comment about concept of God is near to Islam like God has no material form but on Murti Problem Islam is categorically clear about any kind of Idol worship be it Murti, Animals or Movies stars.
Muslims just cannot stand the concept of Murti worship, this leads to so much superstition, unnecessary fears and exploitations at the hands of Gurus or holy men. In fact most Indians are superstitious and are exploited at hands of some kind of fake Babas and fake Gurus.
No doubt Muslims need to stop hating Hindus and equating them with Pagans of Makkah who first expelled and then imposed war on Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.
I think debate in a scholarly environment between Islam and Hinduism is the only way forward because we cant afford war in atomic age.

      @@TajamalGhumman Thanks for your reply.
      I appreciate your honest writing
No doubt Muslims need to stop hating Hindus
Any honest devotee of God would never cause harm to another living being.
Any so-called Hindu causing harm to Muslims is not really a Hindu.
The same with all the looting, temple demolition & countless genocides of Hindus by so-called Muslims.
These are just greedy people using religion to steal, kill etc.
I'm glad we agree on this one.
      A question from your text?
Muslims just cannot stand the concept of Murti worship.
As I have explained, murti is a form of God that is visible to those who can't see the spiritual realm.
Isn't it true that both matter & spirit is manifested by God?
If God is the source of matter why can't Hie appear in His own energy as Prophet Moses (Musa), pbuh, saw God in a form of a burning bush?
The Jews & Christians accept that God can appear on the material element fire.
      Murti is not an idol.
Yes, God has also an impersonal aspect.
If you treat me badly I'll show you my impersonal side by avoiding you by not talking to you.
But my personal aspect is the primary one.
A relationship must be between persons.
A relationship with money or other objects never satisfies anyone.
In any case, we do respect your choice of understanding God as an impersonal energy, eternal light etc. God that cannot be understood by us.
Yet, as God is all-powerful, He can make us understand Him... If He so chooses.
But whatever is that our heart goes to (persona God or an impersonal Deity), let us find a way to live in peace, acceptance & cooperation.
I do not share your beliefs but I accept that those are your beliefs.
We as the same in the name of brotherhood & peaceful co-existence.
      Please respect our choice.
      What is your good name?
      Salaam aleikum

I dont think religious understanding is needed, we need to coexist not become best of freinds, coexist means respecting each others belief without understanding it, not what you said, french secularist ideologies were very different to christian kingdom of britian, eventhough their beliefs were different and they didnt accept this, there is peace, you need this in south asia region, forget about your gods and your beliefs, make it point that violation of ones rights as it pertains to religious propagana be outlawed to maintain civility between to strong set of beliefs, this well help this region. i also think gandhi is good example of religious coexistence although we need a separation of state in both countries as religions will always clash this way them being outside will help internally

Even the person asking questions jalil is wearing his religion on his sleeve. Looking at him itself does not give any hope for any country !! Islam as its national goal will not take Pakistan anywhere. There is no hope for Pakistan that's for sure as long as the aasmani kitab is the driving force of that country.

By why are you to shake? Strange! You should be confident enough to ‘tackle’ this talk. You seem to be soooo obedient; do you know what impression of Pakistan are you leaving on people! Didn’t they have anyone better who knew language and communication better? What is ‘Sir’; you should use the word ‘Professor’. Arent you even ashamed of what and how you do stuff? What a conservative behaviour!
