Question: "How do you flip those... what they're playing?"
I grew up in marching bands since age 3. My dad was a nationally accomplished band director in Ohio. I went on to be a star mellophone player in the 1980s. For most of us, the charts are just a reminder - kind of like class notes when you're given an open exam. We remember 98% of the material but it's nice to have the notes there to remind you, especially when you've got music like this that goes from 4/4 to 6/4 to 5/4 etc.
Composer Hans Zimmer writes in mixed meter. He's not giving you a constant 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 beat (4/4). He'll go from that to a 6/4 often (1-2-3 1-2-3 is the feel) but then he'll throw in the chaos of the (1-2 1-2 1-2) which transitions the 6/4 to a 5/4 (1-2 1-2-3 or 1-2-3 1-2). He does this to communicate to the listener a condition of instability and chaos. It's perfect for the films he composes to.
What's so incredible is the HM Royal Marines orchestrated this and march to it perfectly. Complex meter is super hard to march to given most people can't even coordinate to a 4/4 beat (LEFT-RIGHT LEFT-RIGHT!). As an Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band alum, when we did pieces in 5/4, it was painful and we had to have extra rehearsals for the 80% that couldn't innately feel the mixed meter. The HM Royal Marines are insanely exceptional here in performing at the top tier with mixed meter.
Also, whoever was the sound expert on this performance is a minor god. I still don't know how they pulled off this fidelity of performance.

Blimey HM Royal Marines is the Band of His Majesty's Royal Marines who are part of the United Kingdom's Armed Forces. HM Royal Marines are part of the Royal Navy here in the UK, they are the armed soldiers who are on Royal Navy war ships plus they are deployed in times of war, conflicts or special operations in parts of the world, some of them join a British Special Forces unit called the SBS who are a Navel version of the world known British Special Forces unit the SAS who come from the British Army. HM Royal Marines are known around the world as one of the Best Military Regiments in the World and one of the toughest and feared. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

HM Marines are either His Majesty or Her Majesty’s depending who the reigning monarch is.I am probably biased as my father was a Royal Marine during the war, however a lot of his time was stationed in and around London during the blitz, he then was attached to 40 commando for the rest of his service. But for me I personally think the Royal Marine band is the best and the smartest and most talented of military musicians.

If you love conducting, Ruby, I've got a challenge for you. Watch "Maestro" with Bradley Cooper. Watch it without critical narration. Throw yourself into the film. Then come back and consider how an actor - Bradley Cooper - channeled Leonard Bernstein.
I knew Bernstein in person. I performed solos under him in 1985 playing Brahms First Symphony as the principle french hornist. I have no idea how Bradley "became Bernstein" but the human on that film captured Bernstein's soul. I do know Cooper spent six years of his life learning how to conduct in Bernstein's style which is incredible.
Here's an insight into the world of a radically influential composer and conductor.
