I am the only surviving crew member that was on the last train out of Erwin, TN that made it through to destination point the night of the flood in 1977. I thought I'd never see the Nolichucky River that high again in my lifetime. Boy, was I wrong. I think it's a shame that a lawsuit has been filed by American Whitewater and American Rivers to halt or impede the reconstruction process that was ongoing. I'm currently retired from CSX and had another career after my RR career working with TVA's Aquatic Biology Department. As an avid outdoorsman and fisherman, I'm as concerned as anyone could be about the future of the Nolichucky. We need to make the necessary repairs and reconstruction ASAP and let the healing process begin. Thank you guys for the long hours you've put in and hopefully the nonsense will soon be behind us.
I Mean You Guys Are Doing The Best With What You Got....When You Gotta Get Infrastructure back & People Back to Work In the Aftermath of this Unprecedented Event Inevitably Your Going to Step on Some Toes & Get Lawsuits Flying....I Admire You Guys though & Wish You the Best in Your Efforts.
That flood was considered epic! Then Helene hit! I remember riding an excursion train from Marion to Erwin and back not too long after the damage from the 77 flood had been repaired, and concrete walls built in some location. I expect we’ll see a lot more of those walls built before this line is reopened! The work at Poplar is beyond fascinating to me, and I’m anxious to see if those bridge spans will be repaired and reused, or if new ones will be fabricated.
I’m a 40 year retired csx and the maintaining and re-establishing of this subdivision is good news and great and the jobs that will be kept will help all the members of the communities. Trains make America great …👍
Thank you CSX for putting this out! The reconstruction effort is immense, and you’ve got to be proud of all these forces facing situations that were unheard of before Helene! Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
I live along the former Clinchfield and have always enjoyed watching the trains go by. I was worried that the line would be abandoned with how much damage it sustained. I’m glad that CSX is putting in the effort to restore and update the line.
I was an Locomotive Engineers for CSX. We ran into Bostic, NC and we hand the trains over to the Erwin crews. They always spoke of how beautiful of run it was in the fall. Remember many of washouts over the years with heavy rains. 40 plus miles of damage is mind boggling for sure.
Is it presumptuous of me to think they are recycling Rail and Ties? Some of the entire sections look pretty good from the camera's perspective. What a great effort. I'm an old man now and I envy you guys working on such a worthwhile endeavor.
Usually is. Quote: So what happens to all those old train tracks? The physical parts of the old railroad tracks are usually recycled. The metal rails can be removed and sold as scrap metal, which eventually gets recycled into new products. The wooden railroad ties can find new uses as landscaping timbers. (end of quote).
The guy from Florence got to see all the water that came down from the western end. It's downhill from here. Whitewater, Horsepasture and Toxaway gorges.
Thanks for all of your hard work
Thank you to all the hard working people
Okay I just wanna say you guys are the best! Thank you for putting a smile on my niece’s face! ❤
