Day 101 of Cheering on Jeff: GO JEFF!
This is like Blacktails studios but for Moto. Great job. Keep it up.
Heard stuff goes quick on your profile!
Give it a few more years and you're gonna be doing your own bottom ends and port jobs. Bike work is almost as addicting as riding.
Hopefully sooner than that!! I’m addicted already🤙🏼
What is the bolt kit you use on your project? It comes I. The clear box for ktm’s? I saw it once on your videos and for the life of me I can’t find them again
SpecBolt Nickel Plated!
Hi Jeff this is awesome and glad to see everyone now discovering this product. I work for an MX race team in South Africa and I Cerakote coat all their stuff from Pistons to valves for a living. Done quite a few pro riders stuff as well. What I would suggest is the following. Stay away from Vapour blaster for Cerakote. You are not going to get desired anchor pattern/mechanical profile. Sure Vapour blast to clean it but still have to dry blast with medium like Aluminum Oxide or garnet at 60-80 grit to desired PSi as recommended by Cerakote which is what we call SA2.5 - SA3 white surface blast and then gasout in the oven as deep penetrated oil in porous aluminum substrate needs to come to surface. If no discoloration after gasout process blow off parts and spray. If you notice oils at the surface you have to start at step one all over again. Also when you spray don't mist the parts. Spray pattern must be 1 inch oval with 50% wet pool in centre. You have to do straight paths at 12° up and down with 50% overlap so you pool the paint on each run in an upward downward stroke. That's how you get high gloss levels and linear surface sheen... The less you stay trigger happy but linear the better the finish. Also side covers must be done in H series (Oven Cure) with H300 clear if you want it to last but have to have metal hopper on spray gun as part B will eat the plastic. Anyways I'm here to help if you get stuck because there will be plenty paint fails as you get really involved and start fiddling with different clears, metallic colors and FX flake.
I Need some advice. Can I get your ig?
I always just spray any surface discoloration with brake clean, usually it pulls the oil off and evaporates right away although sometimes I've had to put it back in the oven.
and yeah glass beads in a vapour blaster just embed water and glass into the pours of the metal which will cause corossion and prevent proper cure of cerakote
And he really should be using a cartridge filter mask. this stuff is very toxic.
Cerakote also very clearly calls for 1-2 passes just on the wet side which doesn't always matter but on certain coatings it can make or brake it.
Jeff’s cool , AJ is the dbag
Pick up an old toaster oven. Very cheap and still big enough to do alot for an MX sized motor.
I just traded my car for a 2019 ktm 250 xc, it has a orange head on it can't wait to rip this thing.
Hell yeah jwalk good job on the steady progress with both the bike and the shoulder seat time is right around the corner ❤
Idk, seems kinda lazy. You have a fully stocked dream garage, surely 30$ isn’t too much of a sacrifice for an oven from marketplace… it’s has many uses, and in the case of cerakote the finish seems to become far stronger when oven cured in my personal opinion. That’s the route I took, and since the cure time is only 2 hours with the oven cured coats instead of a full 24/48 hours for the c-series I would argue the oven cured stuff is far more time efficient. Outgassing cast aluminium parts is very important for a lasting finish, they recommend it for a reason. Whenever I coat cylinders or cases I always outgas them in the oven, and more often than not you see spots of oil seep to the Surface even though the part had been soaked in acetone.
My two cents, I recommend oven cure for serious use, and only C-series for high temp applications.
Nice work my guy! Glad to see you diving into the motor build. I loved doing mine and the cerakote makes it next level! Keeping up with this one…
nice job jeff. next time you should get you a real spray mask.. that little covid mask will not help you a bit ..
Sounds like you need to research X dimension and Squish since your playing with the head.
You can blow a bunch of money on something that runs worse than stock if you dont get it right.
We like the vids!
Such a transformation!!! Greatly appreciate the shout out and representation. Excited to see this thing move and smoke
Dude touched all his parts when they were hanging up before spraying lol
A fabric mask is no protection at all from volatiles, buy a cheap respirator!
Burnt bronze is so played out. I can’t get excited about it at all.
For Spraying in the garage.... set up a box fan with an AC filter 0n the intake side. It will catch some paint.
where's the squish band on that head insert dome???
More jealous of the green grass you still have.
Great vid Jeff! One constructive criticism though, when you’re giving instructions and tips on your process slow down your speech a little. I was seeing myself having to rewind to hear exactly what you said since you were talking so fast. All in all awesome vid and hella sick engine. Keep it up bro!
What’s that song during tear down?
I wonder if this new c series cerakote is as good as the "normal" version. I took my stuff to a firearm coatings guy last time, would be great if I can do it myself.
