Yep.. Just like that.. We were issued those when I joined in 1984.. Still in.. We Field Eat out of card board trays now.. Biodegradable, less cases of dysentery from poorly cleaned Kit... But flimsy. Stainless is the way to go for chow kits.
The ww2 mess kit was thicker. Double layer just like the canteen cup and jug. If you are burning stuff get one that is military surplus. You will see the difference.
Aluminium mess kits cook like a b*tch. Unless you make soup or pasta. It's possible to make a grilled cheese, bake an egg etc but damn does aluminium burn quickly. The heat source doesn't disperse well, even if you're cooking on charred wood/coal embers. Unless it's really heavy gauge aluminium. Steel bakes much easier.
The stainless steel are well better I have a original 1944 not used for a good few years but won't part with it you'll see the difference much better than the alloy mess tin,
Just purchased the stainless steel one. Waiting for it to arrived. Thanks for the measurements and video.
Your welcome. You'll love it mate, I use mine all the time 👍

Would you use the handled part as frying pan or is it really only designed to put pre cooked food in?
IV used it as a frying pan many times
Nice review! Great bit of kit! Have a blessed day
Thank you
Watch wind talkers and you will see how the mess kit and canteen kit all tie together.
