- Today we cover a super exciting video on recent pokemon card purchases from sealed products to pokemon singles! As well we have our first of PSA Graded returns! Using these recent 1996 Kobe Bryant rookies as an example I will show you how I cover the cost of purchasing, grading, and reach a total return on investment that far exceeds my initial cost. Collecting, grading, and investing in trading cards can be an extremely fun and rewarding hobby and anyone with any level of income can enjoy the experience. There's never been a better time to be a collector!

Ebay is good, you can always try sniping an auction. TCGplayer is also another great source. And you can check your local game store
How likely is it for the return on investment to be positive? For example, what are the chances I sent in a bunch of ungraded cards for Pokémon and they come back with scores that make the return on investment and negative or neutral? With Kobe Bryant, you timed it right with his death, so it may be different for something that doesn’t have such a surge since it is too late now
You'll have to look at the cost of the ungraded card vs the graded and see if there are healthy margins. There are cards where the ungraded copy is $10 but the graded is $100 - $200. That is a healthy margin with room for profit.
Your RUclips channel is amazing. I feel like I’m late to the Pokémon game in terms of collecting, but excited to learn what you did to see if I can apply it.
Do you have a system or strategy with regards to how you make decisions? Do you just use your left over earnings to buy things?
Do you buy like 3 times what you want to collect with plans to flip 1/3rd, invest 1/3rd and collect the other 1/3rs so you can make enough money to build collection? Or something like that?
How do you decide what is going to go up in value? Or do you just try to get one of each card in every deck and by doing so you figure out what is hardest to get?
Nice! I opened roughly 200 of those Darkness 2pk blisters and compared them to booster boxes.
Booster box was 7-9 hits per box. A booster box in price (23 2pk blisters) worth of the 2pk blisters was 12-15 hits per “box”.
A booster box equivalent in total packs, 36 total ($72 worth SS AND DARKNESS MIX) averaged 10-12 hits in the 2pk blisters.
Overall. I love these 2pk blisters. Sometimes you do pull nothing haha.

I like the breakdown of the Kobe grading costs/profit. It would be helpful if you also included how much the raw, ungraded Kobe card is going for currently so that we could compare the ROI of keeping it ungraded versus getting them graded. Thanks for the awesome video!
Ungraded cards are currently going for $200 - $400.
NONE of my 90's sports cards were worth anything. Apparently, card printers in the 90s went "brrrrrrr"
Loved your video it was super instructional..quick question for you❓. I have a bunch of unopened pokemon cards like booster boxes and unopened packs...not old there newer...should I just put the in a box and forget about them or open them up and try to find some of the chase cards people want

I opened a couple of the 2 pack blisters and I pulled 3 v cards, 1 vmax, and the rillaboom gold secret rare. I got really lucky!

yeah they have pretty good pull rates ive opened like 10-15 and gotten 1 gold card multiple v cards and 2 full art
I got lucky and got two pokeball tins and got a full art lugia ex gyrados gx full art wickie and rr zerora gx but the last 4-6 boosters have had no luck but nice to know other people have been having luck

Yeah it's definitely a great idea to purchase multiples of a card if you want a real good chance at a perfect card. It's funny because I did this before even seeing this video. I bought 12 amazing rare rayquaza and and 5 jirachi lol so yeah I don't blame you for going crazy buying multiples 😆

About the box in the flat rate envelope; not a loophole but a smart shipper. Flat rate doesn’t mean a flat envelope. Usps’ motto was even ,”if it fits it ships. You just can’t modify the envelope.

Wow that's crazy returns, I think more people are starting to catch onto this now going by the insane numbers of Pokemon submissions I'm seeing from the UK. I'm curious to see how it will affect the market a few months down the line although I think most people will hold onto most of their submissions and it's not like there's going to be a massive surge in vintage pops to override the demand
Hi Jake! Thank you so much for the thorough content, as always. Quick question: is it safe and worth it in terms of wait time to send cards into PSA right now? I still can't get over what happened to Leonhart's Charizard, and I have a very sentimental card from the Neo series (and a few others) I've been wanting to grade. I'm just wondering if I should wait for things to simmer down with the pandemic in the states (I know postage is delayed on many things right now), or if it's still a good time to submit to PSA.
What happened to Leonhart is extremely rare although there's always a small chance. I always have insurance on my packages. Right now the wait time at PSA is extremely long, think 6 - 8 months from time of shipping. So it's up to you if can accept that, or try another grader like BGS or CGC

What's your thoughts on the secret rare from Fates Collide, the gold rimmed Alakazam EX being such a low valued card? I thought it would be a much more sought after card being as Alakazam is an original pokemon and the art work on the card is amazing!
Fates Collide isn't a particular memorable set. If you enjoy the card then do collect it. EX cards are very affordable right now that's true. You never know when that might turn around.

I look and make sure it's properly center, the corners aren't bent, that there aren't any scratches on the surface. If you see any imperfections then they will also surely catch it. A good candidate is a card that I see little to no issues with.

Really great video! The Kobe investment was a big score! When it comes to buying raw cards and grading them for profit, what do you look for when choosing to invest? With the increase in Kobe memorabilia that made a lot of sense. How would you select options that might not be as clear cut. I hope this makes sense lol. Anyways great stuff, thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
I collect things I enjoy. For Pokemon cards I select the cards that have the most stand out art and popularity. For sports cards you want to pick rookie cards of popular players.

You don't need a membership but the membership does offer card grading deals. It gets cheaper as you send in larger card orders. As to where I purchase my cards I go through multiple sources, eBay, Mercari, facebook marketplace, local hobby shops. You never know where you'll find a good deal.

Ive gotten the same problem. They send packages as post and not package... So its cheaper, but makes a bigger issue for the local post office.
And btw the HF Ultra Premium collection box is going for a lot more than 150$
Jake, what do you think about the Armored Mewtwo card? Obviously a lot less talked about than the Shiny Ray, but its a very unique and cool card that was only available in those collector chests IIRC.

Hey man! I recently bought some ultra pro card savers but they are reasonably warped (the csrd savers). Are they still worth it to use for sending cards to psa and store cards in? It's some weird bents as well that would not look nice on a card
Up to your own judgement. If they're borked then I would let Ultra Pro know and they'll probably replace it.

Its not a loophole, if they catch it, it will be sent back or you will have to cover the difference in cost. that is for flat items

Just saw some cosmic eclipse single packs at walmart. I'm just getting back into and wondering what to start on. I picked this sword and shield base and darkness ablaze because of the 2 for 4 deal. I bought 4 evolutions at dollar general the other day not the $1 packs and I want to get those because that's from when I started but haven't seen anymore in the stores

Those 2 for 1 packs are awesome! I got 4/5 ultra rated just from burning shawdows!
do you think the shining ho-oh will increase in value? As you can only get it from the ETB. I just purchased 14 of them.
You purchased them from the recent Pokemon center release? The shining ho-oh has already been steadily climbing in value. Unfortunately Ho-oh is not the most popular pokemon right now but the ETBs are a fine pick up as a long term investment.
TwicebakedJake I just purchased the promos alone from a seller. Ended up getting 14 for $100 cad so it was about 7 cad (5 usd) per card. Figured I’d just hold them for a while as such a low investment
TwicebakedJake also, if you don’t mind me asking, is it better value to keep them in the promo package or sleeve and top load them? I personally want to sleeve and top load but I’m not sure if taking out of the promo package reduces the value
when did you send in your submission, how long was your predicted turnaround, and what was your actual turnaround time?
Their turn around time for sports card is different than Pokemon cards. Right now it takes 3 - 6 months to have your cards graded and sent back.

If you're worried about losing money then buy what Pokemon cards you like.

They charge more depending on value of card and speed of service. PSA will break it down for you on their website

I JUST got my first ever psa submission back two days ago. I got a psa 10 Boss's Orders Rainbow Secret Rare and Psa 10 Full art Gold Twin Energy Secret rare. For these two cards not much info is out there for what I should price it at. What is your opinion? Thank you in advance :D
If you can't find a price you can always make your own. No reason you can't set prices. I would charge twice the current card cost + PSA grading cost.

Hey jake, I have a question regarding grading the Charizard VMAX (just pulled it haha) from PSA. There was no autocompleted description on the submission page and so do I have to manually type out the card? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!
For brand new cards they may not be in the PSA system yet. You don't have to find the auto complete. Just typing Charizard VMAX is fine!

How did you get a $20 dollar grading cost? I sent in a single card to beckett and the entire cost was $71 dollars including insurance, shipping, and the grading.
Depends on how expensive the card you send in. PSA has their prices right on their website. $20 is actually excessively expensive for me. My usual Pokemon submissions usually only cost $8 per card.

What about buying booster boxes and selling cards as singles and maybe grading those that are worth it ? Do you think that’s a good way to get started ?
The expected value of packs are almost always lower than the cost of buying the pack. If you're looking for the easiest growth I would recommend buying singles that are the most collectibles rather than doing mass pack openings

The newer sets (hidden fates and now the reprint version) are much easier to grade, therefore I'd suggest using BGS and hope for a chance getting the 10s - especially the Black Labels (BL pop report is 100+). Make Centerings your #1 priority. Cards must have perfect (or very close to) centerings both on back / front. Factory damages are #2 priority.
If you have big bucks, maybe you should buy PSA 10 shiny zards (ensure they have no visible damages / have perfect centerings), crack em up and submit to BGS. Even better, some older sets (WOTC era) like the Skyridge have also really good printing quality. Mass buy Crystal zards (most of them is literally flawless) and submit all of them to BGS. Good odds you'll get the 10s.

Prices on master set really vary. I don't see why you can't ask high and lower slowly over time

I found it online. I'm very confident it's legit since it's authenticated. There's no dedicated shop for signed Funkos. You can try eBay, Mercari, or Facebook marketplace.
Hey Jake do you have a idea what a full masterset of darkness ablaze will be coast? You think 1000 doller is a good price? Or more or less? 🤔😅
Hey mate, I was going to reply to your email but here is fine. Most master sets are around a $1,000. The Darkness Ablaze set has some pretty expensive cards including a $100 Charizard so I wouldn't be surprised if the full set went for over $1,000.
