Some peoples belief is just so fragile that it can't handle any criticism. I don't really blame them when you believe something without evidence, it's almost by definition fragile.
+Jonathan Campagna Probably because discussions regarding both religion and politics often result in a strong emotional response, regardless of perceived evidence for either person's position. Dave, Thank you for reading my letter., I come from 45 years of electronics industry experience. I think the more science the better and it shows that we as humans will be peeling back the onion for quite some time to come. I find the more I know the more it proves to me that God really is outside the box, way outside. All the best in the coming year!
So far outside the box that there is still zero evidence the further you look. Very crafty this god is! Equally plausible the Hindus are right in the many gods. But zero is still by far the most likely scenario. Thanks for sending the letter.
+Richard Ball You're right, it depends on self delusion and the rejection of logic. But hey, if it makes you happy, go for it. Just don't come knocking on my door trying to "save" me from your hateful god.
+treborrrrr It must be providence that my letter arrived when it did. I sent it back at Thanksgiving. Dave didn't read the part of my letter where I said that to unbelievers this all seems like nonsense, I does show that God must be working in people lives since they are getting all worked up over it. It shows conviction. Actually my God loves you so much that he created the entire universe just so you would have a place to live. If you reject His invitation he is only reluctantly granting your wish and he will leave you alone. If you are still upset about it ask yourself why? I don't get anything out of it except welcoming another to the family.
+EEVblog no Dave. There is plenty of evidence, you just make your common mistake of overconfidence in spite of evidence, like when you placed the Vichy meter last when it was the most accurate. You made up fictional excuses to justify your error in judgment and you have doggedly refused to admit your many mistakes. I understand it makes you feel better to deny your many mistakes but it's just not true. You flatter yourself that you are the smart one but you are not. You invoke science as your police badge of reason yet most of the greatest men of science have had faith. Isaac Newton, Maxwell, Galileo, Descartes, Bruno, Faraday, Heisenberg, Kelvin, Planck, Copernicus, Pascal, Kepler, and Volta. Schrödinger, Oppenheimer and Tesla were spiritual and Einstein was a relaxed pantheist. Do you know how many of the physics greats have been militant atheists? not a single effing one. Dave. Not one. Dirac was briefly in his youth, Pauli made fun of him and later in life Dirac said that life might be of such complexity as to require a creator. Qualia proves our spiritual nature with absolute certainty. Try as you might, you cannot make anything physical feel pain when it should be so simple according to the secular view. And please spare me your mindless assurances that pain is already understood. Have at least a modicum of intellectual integrity and think further than that. Does bool pain=true; make pain? does a matrix multiplication? pain is not a computational artifact. I am a vastly better scientist than you, Dave, and I am a christian. Contrary to your childish belief, I am not so because it is comforting. Indeed christianity is quite a burden. Not that you would understand high minded things.
Dave i already had tons of respect for you after you named your child Sagan. But after your glorious rant at the end, my respect has been doubled. Happy holidays!
I give you a lot of respect for not being afraid to voice your opinion in fear of loosing views. Whether your opinion be on garbage electronics or larger ideas like this, your honesty is a major reason why I and so many other people watch you.
When my grandfather bought me a Tandy Color Computer 2 for Christmas that I couldn't shut up about, my father got jealous and got me the Tandy Pocker Computer 3 for my birthday just a few days later. I used that thing ENDLESSLY. I took it to school and used it in my math classes. Whenever we were out and about and there was some downtime, I could just pull this thing out and practice by BASIC programming. Only ever needed one change of batteries since the 1980's! Loved it! Started collecting the other models a few years back and I'd just torn this PC-6 down a few days ago to check for leaky batteries and was very impressed by the build quality, aside from the QWERTY keyboard under the display of course. Funny to see one pop up on your bench just a few days later!
There was a big argument over on the Techmoan channel over whether the valves on those amps actually do anything. maybe you could do a video on whether the valves are actually connected Dave?
As a devout non believer, Christmyth drives me mental!! Even worse shit on TV than usual, Carol singing bollox, mindless decorations everywhere, excess, sheep tendencies etc, etc!! I just want it gone! Imagine in a 100 or 200 years, or whatever it takes, if humanity survives that long. People will be incredulous that humanity once believed such utter nonsense! I hope!
+turboslag My prediction is that what you see as religion today will be more like a tall tale in 100 years, but we'll adopt even stupider things that people start believing in. Why: Neural genetics. People are stupid because their brain is stupid. (Unless we also conqueror that too...?) See: Wiki on god gene / VMAT2. I've proven there is a 3x correlative factor using genetic data from opensnp. (But IANARS. RS = Real Scientist.)
Not "Chrismyth". It's properly Newtonmass... because Sir Issac Newton was born on the 25th of December and taught us the true gravity of our situation.
Ah, was that meant to be clever? Newton being dead and all, not being able to say anything? I only said something because christmyth and Sir Isaac Newton in the same sentence seemed off is all. By all means, carry on!
It's the time of year for family, friends and fun. One can be non-Christian and still celebrate those things, especially as the winter solstice was celebrated for thousands of years before Christianity. Much of the modern iconography of Christmas existed before long before Christianity began, anyways. Besides, celebrating the actual documented date of birth of a very important scientist and mathematician is more significant to me than the date of a maybe fictional character who the Romans changed the date of birth to suit the customs of their latests conquests.
+Antony T Curtis I never said a non Christian couldn't celebrate winter solstice. Even though winter solstice is celebrated on December 22nd or 21st not the 25th. Constantine celebrated Christ-Mass in 336 AD. Even though Christians celebrated it hundreds of years before that. Constantine adapted the celebration of "Christ-Mass" to the date of December the 25th. Please, explain how Christmas came before Christianity? If your going to celebrate' a man for his works, shouldn't you take into account his beliefs as well? Aren't a mans beliefs a part of who he is?
I have a lot of those colorful capacitors in my parts drawer. They were made by Philips many years ago. You can read their value just like on a resistor but then in picofarad. I think they look like candy :-)
“A man writes himself down as a hopeless Philistine if he speaks with ignorant contempt of the faith which produced St. Francis, which inspired Dante, and which found expression in the canvases of Bellini and in the stones of Venice. Even if I believed Christianity to be a myth, I should still salute with melancholy respect the superstition which had inspired such supreme artists in song, in paint and in stone, and should still find it difficult to understand how a mere superstition could take form in so noble a synthesis of spiritual and secular beauty.” - Arnold Lunn, 1932
I would like to point out that tube headphone amp was a hybrid amp where the tubes merely act as a buffer and the amplification is done by solid state. Most cheap tube amps under $150 are like this, but they still give a "tube sound" and can cut the edge off overly bright headphones.
I'll take the preamp if several hundred haven't yet! They would be something like 12AU7 that is useable at around 12 Volts. There might be something to double the supply voltage, but the valves not run within spec. There's nothing wrong with the new production valves, they just ruin the look of vintage items.
It fell in the canyon, and was dredged out 6 months later. It then went in an e-waste container to Nigeria, where it spent a few weeks in a pile in the sun, until it was graded and sent in a smaller container to China, where it was buffed up and put on Ebay. It was then shipped to USA and then on to That Crazy Aussie Bloke.

Merry Christmyth from the UK Dave. I am very lucky that working in STEM, it's such a rarity for me to ever come across a "believer" and even when I do, they are much less evangelical that most. That said, I would fight for the right for people to say "Merry Christmas" rather than that "Happy Holidays" crap, as only the truly stupid get offended by people saying Merry Christmas, and Christians are welcome to have their traditions
I almost went the route of hooking up my old IBM PC with RS485, but then I found that I could put a 10BT network card in it and use an old Windows XP box to transfer files. That ITT relay could very well be for telephone switching.
That's what I like on mailbag vids: Silego, "Silicon Lego", never heard of, pretty interesting stuff. They start there where Cypress PSoC is not flexible enough. Now I need to come up with something where I want to use them in ;)
That is the most overkill knife for opening a package and it's awesome! Your videos are great and even if I haven't got a clue what you're talking about half the time, it's still interesting!
To all those *so-called* Christians hating on Dave because of the Christmyth comment. Christmas is mentioned nowhere in the Bible, neither is Jesus birthday. It is a recycled pagan holiday by a man who was also far from Christian. Do your research. There is however a load of scriptures that condemn any participation in pagan worship. Then on top of it, Christmas today is highly commercialized. Commercializing Christianity, also far from Christian, didn't Jesus throw merchants out of the temple? So if you claim you're Christian and you celebrate a commercialized, recycled pagan holiday, you're at best ignorant and at worst a hypocrite. And ironically, in this regard Dave is WAY more Christian that you!
If that headphone amp has not been taken yet I would like to have it as I don't have anything to make them any louder as i only have windows volume control for my volume.
Good on ‘ya Dave! I really wish more people (especially those of celebrity and influence) had the balls to come out and dare say what they really think of religious myth and superstition. Knowledge of the fact that you’re a person of logic and reason solidifies my belief that the world has a chance for a future that may someday be relatively free from leadership and governance influenced by the scourge that is religion.
When I worked at Hughes Aircraft R/D lab, we would call the contents of the box "floor sweepings. If there was nothing of a secret nature, we would pack it off to a local high school or junior college.
I've had a total of 3 PC 6s. The first 2 had the memory expansion module, but were stolen. A friend gave me his manual after somebody wound up with his PC 6. Wow! 75% theft rate. Because of the high theft rate, I decided not to buy the memory expansion module again (for some perfect stranger). Unfortunately I never got the external expansion adapter, cassette storage, or external DMP printer. You might want to pull the dust cover out of the parallel port on the right side of the lower clam shell and scope it out.
The one in my car is a pressure sensor. I put a bag of groceries on the passenger seat and while i was driving I just started getting BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP., looked at the warnings on the dash and it showed passenger 2 not wearing seatbelt
Hey Dave. Please make a fundamental Friday about that new Christian high pass filter network of yours! I really hope you made it open source but then I can not find the licence to it?! May the electrons be with you in this new year!
Those are Chinese military tubes; some of them can actually be quite nice sounding. And the NE5532 is actually a pretty decent audio op-amp; I have them in my old Magnavox CD player.
Curious about the Subaru occupancy sensor... in my 2013 Subaru, if I put an iPad (with magnets) on the seat, it thinks someone is sitting there. It's failed to detect someone sitting in the seat at least once, too.
I don't think there is any segment of people out there with more absolute wank than the audiophile community. It's the only place in tech where lower performing, higher error/distortion is considered better, and people will pay insane money just to have it. Remember to go buy your vinyls this Christmas, because grooves on a PVC pancake are actually more capable of recording accurate audio than a digital format that can capture and play back every audible tone a human can hear! Just remember to buy the $1,500 1940s vintage record player, the $4,400 tube amp with authentic Soviet era tubes and the $55,000 Sennheiser Orpheus for the best experience!
+EEVblog Dave many thanks for the videos and information you provide - I very much appreciate it. May I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas without any religious connotations whatsoever. Although the Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't get enough coverage :) . I Look forward to learning more from you in the future. Sas.
I still have my Sharp EL-5500 III Scientific Computer; it's a great little thing for doing engineering math even with its problems with dodgy battery contacts... BTW that PC-6 is typical Sharp construction...
The evidence of Christians is in their fruits (actions) that are evidence of faith in one's heart. Nobody forces you to convert. To say otherwise is the definition of weakness. A Christian is such because he has been convinced that he can do nothing to overcome his sinful heart. He places his trust in Christ alone who has promised freedom of our will and bondage to sin. A person that doesn't believe there is a problem will not listen. And believe it or not, it's not our job as Christians to force you to believe. It is a personal decision and not our problem if you don't believe. We can testify with our actions and there is no need to convince: It's up to you. Simple.
He is the go-to for all things atheist. You won't arise an argument from me because I'm well read. I need not prove one thing to you as it seems you need to me. Have a happy new year.
"nobody forces you to convert" Most religious people never made a choice, their parents told them they were a particular religion and they just went along with it.
I've read the entire Bible. That passage is exactly the directive for ministers of the gospel to go out into the world and make disciples. A disciple is an individual that has been convinced of his need for a savior and feels called to preach that truth to others. I came to faith on my own when I realized the depths of my sin. Through the years, my faith has become unshakable because of the evidence of God's grace in my life. The evidence that he loves me more than anyone else on earth. The evidence of things unseen; things that others could not possibly understand. Because of this I am compelled to obey Him. Not a slavish fear. I make my own decisions in life within the boundaries of right and wrong. Just like anyone else. I don't consider myself special. I consider myself saved.
A parent's belief is not extended to their children which is clearly spelled out in . It is up to the individual to make that decision. There's not quite enough room for me to begin an exegesis on your concern so here is a link that should help clear that myth up. www.gotquestions.org/household-salvation.html
i shop on a site called Banggood. they sell a lot of one hung lo electronics. I am currently in the market for a project power box that controls output. I see a lot of them offered on Ebay. what one would you recommend as far as brand. I have guys telling me the cheap ones are ok to use except to watch out for power spikes. Is there any out there that meter the power output a little better than the cheap ones. I would be afraid of blowing out my electronics. What do you think? Any tear downs on those?
Wow, that's a sweet pocket computer! I had the Casio version in high school and college (late 80s); the database function held all my physics formula and the "P" program slots held my matrix algebra programs. It was very rare in the US; everyone was lusting after the HP calculators, but I wanted something I could program in BASIC. Unfortunately it broke, and Casio's warranty replacement was broke even worse. After that, I got into real computers and lost interest in the thing. And now my phone carries an emulator for every calculator that has ever existed.
Hey Dave, could you do a review of the Owon B35 Bluetooth multimeter? You could get a free review from the manafacturer. Thanks! :) Thinking about getting one.
Dave, speaking of Hoverboards, there are nowadays these cheap, Chinese pseudo-Segway-knockoffs that like to be called "hoverboard" (but still roll on wheels like anything else), and I've just read about one igniting a house in Australia, because they are apparently very insecurely constructed. Could you obtain such a beast and tear it down and show where exactly the dangers are?? This would be awesome!
I had one of those Tandy PC-6, was fun and loved writing little basic games for when I was bored in class. Spent a lot of time trying to figure out that 'assembly' but it seems to be a fake interpreted assembly language - no hacking. ah well.
Hi DaveHow about a quick test to see if the tubes are doing anything. I don't see a transformer to couple the high voltage, low current down to the headphones.
I had One from Radio shack, Loved it until she washed it in my coat :) .. The batteries , one was for battery backup while you changed out the Mains , on the side was even for a Printer connector (thermal) if i remember right

Sure, you have them now and then, but it really does seem like the channel is edging closer to quick turnaround stuff like teardowns and mailbags... Which he more or less confirms here. it's still interesting, and I absolutely LOVE retro teardowns in particular, but it seems a shame to waste the opportunity to teach something worthwhile.
+PIXscotland Your'e right, I also wonder what happened to Fundamental Friday. It was one of the rare good tutorial videos on youtube.
+Richard Ball For something to be *true*, then yes, it needs *evidence*.
Merry Christmyth Dave! Thank you for all the great content over the years!
Dave i already had tons of respect for you after you named your child Sagan. But after your glorious rant at the end, my respect has been doubled. Happy holidays!
Thanks.
I give you a lot of respect for not being afraid to voice your opinion in fear of loosing views. Whether your opinion be on garbage electronics or larger ideas like this, your honesty is a major reason why I and so many other people watch you.
Merry Christmyth to you and your family, Dave. :) Thanks for the link to the Sam Harris video.
After watching the part about the headphone amp, I was hoping that Lumintop would have trolled Dave with a tube-powered flashlight.
Actually the CR1220 is the memory backup battery. You can completely remove the 2032s for as long as you like while the 1220 keeps the RAM intact.
Other mailbags may have been more interesting, but this one was the most entertaining! You make His Noodleness proud, Dave!
There was a big argument over on the Techmoan channel over whether the valves on those amps actually do anything. maybe you could do a video on whether the valves are actually connected Dave?
+Jason james It honestly would not be that surprising if they weren't hooked up.
+Jason james I actually didn't think to look!
"insert christian calm down sentence here"
Were you thinking of "Grow the f%&k up"? :)
+Pook365 yep :D nice one
(Unless we also conqueror that too...?)
See: Wiki on god gene / VMAT2. I've proven there is a 3x correlative factor using genetic data from opensnp. (But IANARS. RS = Real Scientist.)
but people gie you free stuff in boxes
Not "Chrismyth". It's properly Newtonmass... because Sir Issac Newton was born on the 25th of December and taught us the true gravity of our situation.
+Antony T Curtis Sir Isaac Newton probably wouldn't like that idea, being a Christian and all.
+Popcanism If he complains about it, I'm sure all the people who choose to celebrate Newtonmass will voluntarily and politely stop.
Merry Christmas Dave to you and your family from southern California.
Even if I believed Christianity to be a myth, I should still salute with melancholy respect the superstition which had inspired such supreme artists in song, in paint and in stone, and should still find it difficult to understand how a mere superstition could take form in so noble a synthesis of spiritual and secular beauty.”
- Arnold Lunn, 1932
Those look like the same valves that were in the Marc Vincent white van speaker scam radio
The phrase 'It's grim in Grimsby' wasn't coined lightly...
+James Taylor
Agreed, I've been there! Worse though is Immingham!
I would like to point out that tube headphone amp was a hybrid amp where the tubes merely act as a buffer and the amplification is done by solid state. Most cheap tube amps under $150 are like this, but they still give a "tube sound" and can cut the edge off overly bright headphones.
Thanks for your videos, Dave. Merry ChristMYTH.
The mail bags are the best. Liked the bag of vintage components the most.
Hey Dave! Happy Chrismyth to you and your Family. Happy New Year As Well!!
Turkish board is very nice, very proud of his country, including both the country and the flag as central points on the board.
No Dave, Ankara is capital of Turkey. Refresh your geo.
+Stevan Simic HURR DURR YOU FUCKING TROLL UNSUB NOW IF YOU DO NOT LIKE DAVE YOURE WATCHING VIDEOS FOR FREE AND HE WAS IN "THE INDUSTRY" SO IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE A HATER /s
+radoinc WOAH! SETTLE DOWN!!!
Merry Christmyth Dave!
I almost went the route of hooking up my old IBM PC with RS485, but then I found that I could put a 10BT network card in it and use an old Windows XP box to transfer files.
That ITT relay could very well be for telephone switching.
Thanks for the upload Dave!
That's what I like on mailbag vids: Silego, "Silicon Lego", never heard of, pretty interesting stuff. They start there where Cypress PSoC is not flexible enough. Now I need to come up with something where I want to use them in ;)
Gatorade chip, what? Ohhhh, Gate Array. {:-p
+Mechaghostman2 I'll have a Gatorade chip.... its full of Electrolytes :P
+commandtheline this needs more attention! Hahaha!
+Mechaghostman2 Since it's Australia, maybe Gator Aid? Sound like a show that would air on Animal Planet :)
Ankara is actually the capital of Turkey, Istanbul is the largest city. I know, shocked me as well.
Happy Winter Solstice?
+NegiMudkip
not very Pagan of you
sampandolfyM2 Kek, yup
Last time I came this early I ended up with a kid
+Celestial Cereal merry christmas
+MuscleDad420 I don't get it.
+MuscleDad420 Happy Holidays!
Dave,
The cream was the HP-71B. Mine is still in use. Doesn't use RPN and it cost $400 USD back then but HP's and TI's were the best.
Rob
That is the most overkill knife for opening a package and it's awesome! Your videos are great and even if I haven't got a clue what you're talking about half the time, it's still interesting!
I'd sure be interested in taking a look at that tube headphone amp if you feel like sending it to Queensland :)
Happy Holidays Dave!
Looking forward to the Fundamentals Fridays in 2016!
If that headphone amp has not been taken yet I would like to have it as I don't have anything to make them any louder as i only have windows volume control for my volume.
happy christmas from Argentina. I love your channel! thanks for all the tips and reviews. :)
Merry Christmas!
+Steve Wayne I think religion is now in it's death throws. Just a few more generations...
The letter response was great, but the "Christmyth" phrase seemed terse and passive-aggressive.
if you don't believe in God you can't dress in formal Pirate attire
***** i'm not sure if you know what i'm talking about go check out the church of the flying spaghetti monster website for clarification
+stevencox75 Ramen!
Does anyone know if someone has sent in a high wattage vaping device? Would love to see Dave do a teardown on one.
Yay Mailbag. This is so exciting *.*
Faith is a sheep's certainty that there will be grass to crop.
Religion is the shepherd's certainty that there will be sheep to shear... and kill.
Curious about the Subaru occupancy sensor... in my 2013 Subaru, if I put an iPad (with magnets) on the seat, it thinks someone is sitting there. It's failed to detect someone sitting in the seat at least once, too.
Why not the flying spaghetti monster?
Headphone burn in and speaker burn in is a real thing, after 100-300 hours the sound gets more warm because the diaphragm and coils get worn in.
Have a nice winter/summer holiday Dave!
Not all audiophiles think that way, so I wouldn't stereotype them like that.
Dave is a savage when talking about religion, keep up the good work.
Actually I thought I was pretty polite in this one.
Atheists with a need to tell everyone all the time that they are atheist are even worse than the religious folks.
+EEVblog Agreed.
+EEVblog What are you doing on the net on chrissy day? Haven't you got a pig to roast, grog to swill and relos to get rid of?
+EEVblog Dave many thanks for the videos and information you provide - I very much appreciate it. May I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas without any religious connotations whatsoever. Although the Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't get enough coverage :) . I Look forward to learning more from you in the future. Sas.
Mailbaaaaaag :) Merry Christmas Dave and for Your cute family!
Apparently falling water has underrated steel members and had to be upgraded recently to avoid collapse.
Yeah, the over hang was sagging quite excitingly.
I still have my Sharp EL-5500 III Scientific Computer; it's a great little thing for doing engineering math even with its problems with dodgy battery contacts...
BTW that PC-6 is typical Sharp construction...
Ooh I would want the amp and I'm in Australia. Never had the chance to play with valves!
So i have few experience with audio. So who deos the valve works?? And what is it usted for?? Someone nice enough to answer :)
How do you know someone is an atheist?
Don't worry, they'll tell you.
Faith, as in accepting things without evidence. Always amusing they resort to faith seeing that it's unjustifiable from a rational point of view.
Not sure if anyone has commented about the headphone amp yet, but i wouldn't mind it. (In Tassie)
I tried to open the link but my phone reported the message as spam or something and your whole comment disappeared. Sorry about that.
"nobody forces you to convert"
Most religious people never made a choice, their parents told them they were a particular religion and they just went along with it.
That -i joke wasn't a real joke.
+James Grimwood
-i +1
i shop on a site called Banggood. they sell a lot of one hung lo electronics.
I've meant a free review unit.
Christmyth must the nation's favourite trigger word. I watched over that bit without batting an eyelid. Why can't people just be less sensitive?
+Prehistoricman It seems to be a new uprising. People need "safe spaces" in universities now it seems.
Spent a lot of time trying to figure out that 'assembly' but it seems to be a fake interpreted assembly language - no hacking. ah well.
Methinks that 'Smile' reader is actually a bank card reader used for securing internet banking
wowww, Isola Rossa, it's like 40 Km from where I live... :) wonderfull place in the sumer...
Hi DaveHow about a quick test to see if the tubes are doing anything. I don't see a transformer to couple the high voltage, low current down to the headphones.
I had One from Radio shack, Loved it until she washed it in my coat :) .. The batteries , one was for battery backup while you changed out the Mains , on the side was even for a Printer connector (thermal) if i remember right
Got to love the absolutely unnecessary yet so amusing blade you use to open this box :D
Ramen, brother!
The Tandy can use some glupptollytic formulation compound on the hinguletts there!
Great video Dave, hope you have a fantastic New Year :-)
In the mix of components, correct me if l'm wrong,
l think the relays are analog Telco
components.
Hi there Master Dave, im from oz, sa. Do you still have that turd available? You see I consider myself a rather avid fecal matter aficionado and think that this will look nice along with my collection browns...
I would like to register in your EEVLOG but I didnt get and I dont know what to do
Someone need to send Dave and additional Dremel and a letter telling him to keep it on the bench for mailbag LOL
If you ever will manage to have a go with some RF staff, I hugely support this idea!)
Haha Nice Paul and Thomas from BMSWEB, love their channel. You forgot to link them!
Where can I buy this oh so manly mail opener? (that knife is bigger than my hand)
