  • So the manga got made into a trilogy of live action movies. Are they any good?
Today we look at all the live action adaptations of Naoki Urasawa's critically aclaimed manga 20th Century Boys. Taking a look at each one to see some of the major changes they make and how faithful they are to the manga. Also to pick up some of the great moments that come from simply having some sound in these scenes.

The worst problem with the 2nd movie is completely cutting off the pope assassination plan. The mole cop and masuo plots feels very contrived and friends ressurects out of nowhere when a random foreign politician approaches the corpse.
Also its a weird mix with the complete edition. Kenji's CE manga counterpart refuses to play gutalala at the concert since katsumata, co-creator of the music, died before, but movie Kenji sings it despite the katsumata scene at the rooftop being a copypaste of the CE.

I would be curious to know what their reasoning behind changing the pope stuff. I mean they cast someone in that role and have him elsewhere in the movie so definitely a weird choice.
Also yeah I agree. The concert works a lot better in the manga. Tying back into the ending and leaving that kind of sombre ending. The movies concert feels like this weird happy fanservice. I mean yeah it was enjoyable to watch but definitely misses the importance of not playing Bob Lennon

I really agree with your point of view of pacing issues , but I think there’s also alot of content in the manga aswell which can’t be all covered for the sake of the run time so I think that’s why we ended up with sort of a good idea of a movie idea but poor execution . The movie was really corny aswell at times which didn’t help either overall this was an amazing video and your analysis was amazing keep up the great content!!!😁

Thanks so much! I totally agree. I think it was going to be a real rough time to get everything from the 300ish chapters into 3 movies and still have good pacing. And yes those corny moments definitely didn't help. Though they certainly put a smile on my face while watching!

Very new to your channel here. I came from a couple of your Monster vids and wanted to see if you had a playlist of it and found the 20CB list. My experience with this series if only the live action movies. I watched them with my family when I was little (don’t ask why a child was watching just know I was definitely younger than 11). I loved the movies but also hated them. Deep down I was super unnerved by the entire thing but I would frequently ask to watch it. This has made me want to rewatch the films but diving into your 3 hour video on the manga. My family does own the manga but since I didn’t try to learn kanji when I was younger and the manga not having furigana it would take me a LONG time to read through it. Hoping it’ll satiate my hunger for the story.
Side note: I hope the comment is coherent. I typed this out very late in the evening and I am very tired. Sorry if it doesn’t make sense.

Been binging your 20thCB videos after finally reading the series. I watched the movies as they came out in the cinemas and I can say that even then, them trying to paint Yoshitsune as "Friend" did not make sense at all and I rmb sitting in the cinema like ?! But because it had been more than half a year between the final 2 movies, I might have gaslit myself into thinking I had forgotten some important details.
It took me so long to finally read the series but it definitely does so much better in building up the cast and emphasizing their friendships. I think Naoki Urasawa's art is extremely instrumental in making characters recognizeable across the timelines and that just can't be replicated as well in live-action. Though, coming back to this after reading, I have a newfound appreciation for the casting Keep up the good work with your videos!

Help, I somehow managed to get a glimpse on 20CB fandom. Never read or watched any clips regarding to this manga. This been recommended to me by many times but never had the time to binge. Now, I am planning to read/watch this.
As a normal weeb, will the movie make sense if I watched it without reading the manga? how many % will I miss if I watch the live action instead of reading 20/21CB?

I would always recommend reading over watching. The movies manage to keep in I'd say 90% of the major plot points but leave out a lot of the stuff that builds into them. Plus they change some things which, while still building the same story, feels very different to the manga. E.g. some characters take on roles in the movies that someone else has in the manga or entire subplots are left out and their conclusions are kind of clumsily stapled in.
TL;DR manga is better but if you're not keen on diving into 250 chapters, the movies will give you the main plot beats

Honestly, the movies were a great introduction to getting further into the manga (Altho, I haven't read it to this day but I will!)
I was a few years from graduating highschool, relatively aimless, and I saw the first 2 movies on a Japan Airlines flight lol.
I was just so friggin engaged. I related to Kenji. Thinking I was following my dream but failed. Wishing I was some sort of "hero" or something bigger.
This and knowing the manga was a great eye opener to something beyond Dragonball, Naruto, or Initial D. Just utter mindfucks and twists. Fast forward to 2024 and it's crazy when you think of the global pandemic or the political divisiveness. I guess we need music to somehow save the world again.
