  • During a July 24 science update at NASA headquarters, new surprising imagery and science results were revealed from the recent flyby of Pluto, by the New Horizons spacecraft. These included an image from the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager or (LORRI) - looking back at Pluto - hours after the historic flyby that shows haze in the planet’s sunlit atmosphere, that extends as high as 80 miles above Pluto’s surface - much higher than expected. Models suggest that the hazes form when ultraviolet sunlight breaks apart methane gas.
    LORRI images also show evidence that exotic ices have flowed - and may still be flowing across Pluto’s surface, similar to glacial movement on Earth. This unpredicted sign of present-day geologic activity was detected in Sputnik Planum - an area in the western part of Pluto’s heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio.
    Additionally, new compositional data from New Horizons’ Ralph instrument indicate that the center of Sputnik Planum is rich in nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane ices.

    I would never have expected that pluto would have been such a complex and active world. I'd have thought it would have been just a cratered ball of ice, frozen in the outer parts of our solar system.
    It is incredible that they were able to discover so much with just a small part of the data of a single flyby!
    My greatest congratulations and thanks to the New Horizons team!

    They shouldn't create false expectations by saying "if you are seeing a cardiologist, you may want to leave the room" (9:11).
    I expected to hear about something really drastic, like a liquid ocean/lake of some sort, ice eruptions, etc. that would've justified such warning... But seasonal ice transportation, larger atmosphere haze than expected and glacial flow, will hardly cause any heart attacks...

    This data is so amazing, and the pictures are just gorgeous. People got upset when it was downgraded from a planet, but now it's easily the most interesting Kuiper Belt object, dwarf planet, and only dual-planetoid system. I'm so glad we finally have this sort of information on Pluto. I was always disappointed growing up, since when you talked about the solar system, all you had of Pluto was some fuzzy blob for a picture and it would say, "It's really cold, it's made of ice, and we don't know much more."
    Not anymore!

Also, what was the precision of each measurement through time? It seems data from 1980 would be much less certain than more recent data.

    51:56. Alan Stern says that the New Horizons team had not been able to get a new mass estimate for Pluto. That isn't correct. They certainly did.
    As New Horizons approached Pluto, it increased the precision in the measurement of the two quantities needed to calculate the mass by Kepler's laws: the sidereal period of the Pluto-Charon orbit and the separations of Pluto and Charon from their mutual barycenter. With that done, an improved estimate of the masses of Pluto and Charon became possible.
    The subsequent precise measurement of their radii made possible improved estimates of their average densities, which allowed better estimates of the ice- and rock-fractions for each body.
    The calculation goes like this. Let subscript 1 denote Pluto. Let subscript 2 denote Charon. d is the distance to the Pluto-Charon barycenter. P is the sidereal period. M is mass. R is radius.
    d₁ = 2035 km
    d₂ = 17536 km
    P = 6.387230 days = 551856.7 sec
    G = 6.67384e-11 m³ kg⁻¹ sec⁻²
    M₁+M₂ = 4π²(d₁+d₂)³/(GP²) = 1.45603e22 kg
    M₁ = (M₁+M₂) d₂ / (d₁+d₂) = 1.3046e22 kg
    M₂ = (M₁+M₂) d₁ / (d₁+d₂) = 1.5140e21 kg
    R₁ = 1186000 m
    ρ₁ = 3M₁/(4πR₁³) = 1.867 g cm⁻³
    R₂ = 603500 m
    ρ₂ = 3M₁/(4πR₂³) = 1.644 g cm⁻³
    b = density of rock = 3 g cm⁻³
    a = density of ice = 1 g cm⁻³
    fraction ice by volume = (b−ρ)/(b−a) = (3−ρ)/2
    → Pluto: 0.5665
    → Charon: 0.6778
    fraction ice by mass = a(b/ρ − 1)/(b−a) = (3/ρ − 1)/2
    → Pluto: 0.3034
    → Charon: 0.4122
    If that was done correctly, then Pluto probably has a rocky core with a 897.6 km radius, overlaid by an icy shell of 288.4 km thickness.
    I kept the general form of the density calculation visible in case someone wants to adjust the values of a and b. Methane ice has a density of about 1.35 g cm⁻³ and nitrogen ice has a density of about 1.25 g cm⁻³ at Pluto temperatures. Water ice's density is about 0.94 g cm⁻³. Pick the mix of water, nitrogen, and methane ices that you think is the right one, figure its density, and assign that value to a.
    Similarly, maybe you think there's a small metal core inside the rocky core, which would increase the value of b. (Earth's moon's average density is 3.34 g cm⁻³ because it has a metal inner core.)
    Then refigure the fractions of ice for Pluto and for Charon by mass and by volume.

    However, that flag-waving at mission control was unnecessary. The world knows whose mission it was without us gloating about it. It appeared very contrived & even embarrassing to some of the participants. The time to wave the flag is when someone tells us we can't wave it -- such as the illegal aliens who violently opposed its display during their Cinco de Mayo celebrations in California.

    Also, being that the Earth and Moon could be considered a Double Planet System, it would seem that even if there are no Gravitational tidal affects at present that the possibility of Neptune's gravity may have affected these two PLANETS in the past as this system does cross inside Neptune's orbit at some point in time.

    Do not dream of such a coincidence. The planet that may look like our in terms of location form its sun does not necessarily say that it is equal to earth. Studies may need to determine what is the solar heat temperature that each of those planets receives, radiation, cosmic, gamma. or ultraviolet rays, if they are existent. We are still far away from finding an earth alike environment from finding one, but let us hope so.

    Amazing, how with one Photographic frame Mr. William McKinnon can tell if there is nitrogen ice flow. Why is this not possible? Answer: Because FLOW by definition is a time dependent phenomena which would require more than one frame to determine flow and this flyby is not going to give you this data to determine the rate of flow. He Should is honest and tell us that this is his interpretation which is flawed, because he only has one data point and he would need more than one, in a time domain to establish this as Scientific fact! But I guess he’s safe because Pluto is 3,000,000,000 miles away and he has a PhD , a license to hoodwink people! All of these scientist are just giving us guesses or maybe they are just deceiving us! And the media, is just incompetent.

    What is he on about? 8:42 "Available to release"?
    Release them all!!!!
    Typical NASA. I'd have rather seen a video on what you have than all the waffle about engineering and delays.
    My son is good with Photoshop if you want a hand?
    Pointless NASA blah blah video...

    It's amazing that we are so intrigued by life on other planets yet we hate one another from different parts not looking like us.
    Can you believe how we would treat E. T. Perhaps it's a reason the other earth like planet with humans is so far away .
    There is another earth like planet simply because nothing in nature is a one time occurrence

    "In this conceptual photograph, we observed evidencve of".... I was born at night, but it wasn't last night. It cannot be evidence and a concept; Doc says it a few times... I'd really like to know which one they are... renders from data or conceptual art. I'd like to believe it's data rendered to visual rep after an hour of rambling on, but after so many times saying "Animation" and "Concept" I'm like... Wow, thanks for the cartoon speculation.

      the languages of the civilizations that really made a difference on Earth's history and that are contained in the Golden Record of Voyager 1... A few (little) civilizations will be able to overcome self-destructive instincts, though humankind on Earth, if it lasts for more 5000 years it will be very very very lucky.Humans are self-destructive. Their capabilities of building a long civilized period are very limited. The last x in the Drake equation is how long a civilization lasts. In the case of humans, it's very low. It's estimated that humankind, either due to ISIS and Co., greedy climate change deniers, and the profound selfishness and warmongering across the human tribes on Earth (and Americans, for instance, are a very dangerous human tribe), it's very likely they won't last for a long time, unless the whole world suddenly becomes a giant Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Ireland or New Zealand... not very likely.
