Great content, thanks. Of course, if you don't want to pay tax and go through the hassle of filing a tax return in Thailand, stay less than 180 days a year in Thailand. Why would I be willing to pay Thai tax on remitted pension income when not a citizen or running a business in Thailand? What benefits do I get for being a foreign taxpayer in Thailand that would justify this expense? Paying tax just to live there year round is unreasonable.

You are probably guaranteed to have a different experience than me if you visit the Thai revenue office for your location.
Mine was great. My local office mgr called his provincial mgr who fortunately speaks English. Very courteous and helpful conversation with both. Yes, this included discussion about dual tax treaty between Thailand and my home country.
Turns out I need to file but likely my tax bill will be zero. The provincial boss said my local office will gladly assist me in filing my return once I come back with my numbers.
So your local revenue office MIGHT be a helpful resource.

Basically if you have a Thai bank account, foreign remittances will be logged and reported to the tax authorities. The banks have to do this. Thus you need to manage how much you send over from your home country. If you have a Thai wife/girlfriend/partner, you can also remit to their Thai bank account, and thus split the monies being sent over. For example my wife manages the food and house keeping finances. She remits money for this.I remit money over for car, etc. Buy stuff on Lazada using a foreign credit/debit card this means you don't need to use remitted money for alot of things. You can even buy alot of food stuffs, cleaning, oil, etc on Lazada. So it can be quite manageable. Non of what I suggest is illegal.

I lived in Europe for 8 years and had to deal with the complexities of double taxation treaties and local tax compliance issues. The only way to effectively comply with these rules I needed to hire a taxation specialist. Seems like the same case for Thailand. A bit unfortunate but required given the stakes for me personally.

Just be sure you have good health insurance that will repatriate you to Hawaii or your place in your country.

Let's see where I should start. I am a Vet like you, so it is not taxable. I am not required to file in the USA. I enquired with your guest's Tax firm last summer and was quoted $500 to do a return. No, thank you. Plus, with the Thai Tax form not being ready to put the amounts in the correct places, it seems like there are still plenty of kinks to work out. I will choose to ride this out, and if it gets out of hand, bail to Laos or Cambodia, as Thailand will no longer be a great place to relax and retire.

Interesting conversation. My perspective is that if a DTA covers government pensions or similar, it would not be considered ‘assessable income’ for tax purposes. Quote from Revenue Department website ‘In general, a person liable to PIT has to compute his tax liability, file tax return and pay tax, if any, accordingly on a calendar year basis.’ If I’m wrong , I’ll pay the 200B fine.😂 TIT.
