  • Why join a church? Dr. Dominic Aquila and Rev. Fred Greco explain the rights and responsibilities of church membership. The Bible calls on Christians to submit to their elders (Hebrews 13:17), which implies that Christians have elders. Elders must give an account for each Christian under their care. This relationship brings privileges and duties. Learn about church membership from the Book of Church Order in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).

This only applies to the organized institutional “church”. Please note that the use of the word “church” here does not refer to the people, ie: the people are the church, but rather to an institution as comprised of a group of clergy that oversees a laity. In this context the word “church” never actually refers to or includes the “laity”. This distinction is in error. There is no place where scripture commands that the believer formally “join” or be “bound” to certain religious institutions.

The doublespeak is incredible. You’re saying a so-called Non-Communicant member is an important part of the CHURCH but are barred from sharing the Supper. Incredible!

The Bible makes no distinction between so-called communicant and non communicant “members”. The Bible does not forbid “non communicant members” from sharing in the Supper, nor does it command a believer to make a particular “confession of faith” in order to share in the Supper.

The Bible can be made to say anything the reader likes.

Sorry if I missed it, but would baptism of any unbaptized children be required for membership? Thanks

No. People must be able to ascent to membership questions, but they aren't required to agree with infant baptism or practice it in order to join as a member.

The book of church order is not scripture. 😃
