  • This house was built in the late 1800s on the foothill of a small mountain, belonging to a landowner in the village near the plain. Facing east, it consists of the anchae (women’s quarters), sarangchae (men’s quarters), munganchae (gate quarters), and shed. When one walks in through the main gate, one sees the square bracket-shaped anchae in the northeast direction and the sarangchae in front of the anchae. There is no wall between the anchae’s courtyard and the sarangchae, but there is a middle gate on the left side of the sarangchae. The shed on the left side of the middle gate is blocking the south side of the anchae’s courtyard. The munganchae is sitting at a right angle with the courtyard of the sarangchae. On the northeast side of the courtyard are an outhouse and a pigpen. The sarangchae was built in a linear layout following the southern style. It has toenmaru (wood-floored veranda) in front, with the daecheong (main wooden floor), the sarangbang (master’s room), two rooms, and a kitchen arranged from the left side. A single pillar is erected in front of the toenmaru, with a tin roof to block sunshine and rain. The anchae was built in the southern style with the master’s room and daecheong placed side by side. What is peculiar about this house is that the daecheong is very large and is divided into three sections. Centering on the daecheong and master’s room are a 3-kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) wing on the left and a 4-kan wing on the right. A 3-kan kitchen with a room at the back is in the right wing. A 2-kan room and a 2-kan daecheong are at the center, with a room and a 2-kan daecheong on the left. There is a narrow wood-floored space between the master’s room and the big daecheong. The storage shed is on the north side between the anchae and sarangchae. This house was built in a typical architectural style of high-class houses in the southern region. The anchae seems to date back to the 18th century, whereas the sarangchae is presumed to have been built in the late 19th century. It does not have a garden, but the trees planted around the house created an elegant atmosphere. ※ Viewing of the cultural property above is usually available anytime but may be limited depending on the owner’s personal circumstances.
