One of the female singers from the early days Tina was a friend of my mother she used to come over to our house on Corbett st in SF and play our old upright piano
I love Dan Hicks & his Hoot Licks. Whenever my parents were listening to them after I’d gone to bed the funniest smell would fill the house. I now know we’ll what that smell was🤣😂🤣🔥🌿
nigga mane mufasa I have been listening for over thirty years...as a kid I made my parents play The Euphonious Whale repeatedly “ My Dad was lucky to enough to see them at The Lime Kiln. Their music is so rich with the layers of tremendous talents, the quirky seeming yet actually sophisticated lyrics. Charisma like this is rare. I saw him in a small bar in NY. It's hard to describe his style. He was great entertainer, who dared to be different and people loved him for that. Yes, Dan, dance and sing with the angels.
Same here.We always caught him( I recorded him at least 4 times) at THE ARK in Ann Arbor. His last tour was cancelled...and then he passed. He was always cordial...I have his last song list and he signed his new CD.
So wonderful I feel lucky that this was a round when I was first getting into more jazzy stuff and away from the am pop stuff. A great time to be alive.
Saw him live in the early 70's as an opening act. By the time they were thru with their set the audience just didn't want them to leave and actually booed the main act. Great live band!
Dan and the Hot Licks, as the original band, put on a real show for people. Dan is still one of the funniest people. He writes really fun music. I miss Maryann and Naomi. They were so kitschy. I always wanted to be a Lickette.
Until today I had never heard of Dan and the boys and girls only to be told he passed, I cant wait to see and hear everything I can get, wonderful, they a craftsmen {and women}
saw this band live 3 or 4 times in early + mid'70s a great dance band with deliciously comic songs+spirit + one of the rare bands for which energy invested to get near the stage was very much worth the investment, becuz the 3singers gave great visual comedy in their onstage presence. By the time. I saw them they were playing large halls like Winterland, so most of us couldn't tune in to that aspect of the show
They are musically talented and whimsical -- so fun to watch. I'm tickled. Where's Mary Anne Price today? She sang "I'm an Old Cowhand" better than anyone ever.
I had the opportunity to see Dan with the Acoustic Warriors in Tampa in 1988. My oldest brother was a fan, so of course so was I. That was when I was 12 or 13. I remember seeing him on the Tonight Show promoting the album Where's The Money." He was great then as he is now.
Farewell, Dan, thanks for all the great songs and thanks for helping me archive the history of the Charlatans. A true original in a culture of commercial formula. How Can You Go Away, When We'll Miss You?
Dan sounds like he was influenced by the Black Jazz from WW-II era France. It is a style that I hope is never lost. It is just pure fun and thank God someone is smart enough to keep playing it. Good music is just good and timeless. Thanks Dan
I saw these guys at the old Agora Club on North High St. in Columbus in the early 70s. They were amazing! Got all of his early albums which are true musical gems as well. Man there was some awesome music coming out in the 60s and early 70s.
I saw them on the bill with Cheech and Chong. I was there for Hicks and Licks, but the crowd kept shouting “Cheech”, “Chong”. Dan stepped to the front of the stage and asked “Has anybody ever heard of us?” They went on to do their usual dynamite performance.
When I was 15 yrs. old [1969] my good friend, Gary Hicks [no relation] turned me on to Dan Hicks and his fine music.I still hum the song, "I'm an old cowhand' to myself often and can't wait to play drums with him in that great ' arena in the sky ' some day. R.I.P. Dan.
In army '72 stationed ft wainwright fairbanks ak. Got letter from my brother said i... MUST go find any dan hicks album i could find...described as BEST show he had ever seen Believing my brother ran over to px and bought 2 Dan Hicks albums. DanHicks # 1 and+ #2 Where's the money ... ran back to barracks and my world 🌎 exploded with that absolute best of the best music i had ever heard. Found Striking it Rich couple months later . 50 +years by my count...and counting still. Music as fresh and powerful as anything ever wrtten even today he is still my champion... of you need to hear this music. Playing LAST TRAIN TO HICKVILLE for people who haven't heard him and band is always satisfying to see their reaction and BEATING THE HEAT Is so Atomic it is mesmerizing To the uninitiated. LOL!! Back in those days he could do those moves while playing his guitar and more , I always thought his legs looked like someone was wiggling a couple of pieces of spaghetti off the ground.
goddammit! I just found out he died. saddest death of the year for me. I'm 33, dan hicks has brought me to some wonderful places and gotten me out of some horrible places. rip dan! dammit
Great performer, nothing like their live shows--RIP---no one has come close to emulating Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli but these guys---a good movie for this type of music is " Sweet Lowdown" a woody allen movie
Dan could be a real a-----e, too drunk, a real jerk on stage, but he was an amazing performer. When he was on, it was great. He was very funny, sardonic and brilliant. Thanks for showing this clip.
Never saw him in his early days...but live toward the end..his pre song quips had us rolling w laughter.Truly miss seeing him live...esp sitting just 10 feet away at THE ARK in Ann Arbor.RIP DAN
Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks were such a hot group but too often overlooked! His earliest LP's are classics. Many pop stars used him as a mentor. No group mixed styles with true validiity as they did!
I knew Maryann Price (Hot Lick on the left) back in SF in the seventies as well as John Girton his guitar player (I think that is him in this video), they were living together at the time. This was after Hicks broke up the band at the height of there popularity. Good folks, John was a wizard and Maryann killed it. We were playing the streets and the Cannery and had mutual friends. Traded him an ES175 for a truck. Ah Good times. Might be Rob Wasserman in the video, can't quite tell.

An American treasure. Thanx for posting.

Elvis Costello keeps Hicks alive.
Won't be replaced. Period.
Man I man I loved this guy!!!
I saw him in a small bar in NY. It's hard to describe his style. He was great entertainer, who dared to be different and people loved him for that. Yes, Dan, dance and sing with the angels.
This little band can always put a smile on your face and a tap in your foot. I needed that today.
Sure do miss him, he was truly one-of-a-kind. So glad I got to see him numerous times over the years, he always put on a great show.
Same here.We always caught him( I recorded him at least 4 times) at THE ARK in Ann Arbor. His last tour was cancelled...and then he passed. He was always cordial...I have his last song list and he signed his new CD.
I saw them somewhere on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 72. Also at Tulagi in Boulder the same year. Heady times.
Didn't get the recognition he so richly deserved. Great artist in concert! RIP
Dan and the Hot Licks, as the original band, put on a real show for people. Dan is still one of the funniest people. He writes really fun music. I miss Maryann and Naomi. They were so kitschy. I always wanted to be a Lickette.

I was lucky enough to accidentally come across an outdoor DH concert about 18 or so years ago and was in heaven.
Oh, I feel so old now...I remember this like it was yesterday.

This is what would have happened if vaudeville had survived to the 60's and 70's. Truly an incredible band!
I remember this as a kid in the 70's
Just under one third of all my philosophy for life comes from Dan Hicks lyrics.
