- People often want to take the easy way. This includes in Buddhism where there are no shortage of "short cuts to Enlightenment". However, as Ajahn Brahm explains, there are no effective short cuts, only the Eightfold Path. And whilst we may not always get what we want, we usually get what we need.
Namo Amitabha Buddha
According to my (stupid) point of view, the Pure Land is the best place for us to practice the Eightfold Noble Path. Even if I practice the Eightfold Noble Path in this world, I still can't achieve any kind of sainthood, because the conditions here are quite bad, and the honored Shakya Muni Buddha has entered Parnirvarna 2600 years ago - our best teacher has gone. Therefore, I'm trying to seek rebirth to the Pure Land. Amitabha Buddha is dwelling there, and he is the best teacher for us, together with the assembly of Bodhisattvas. The living conditions there are good for Buddhist practicing, too. What do living beings in the Pure Land do? Practicing the Eightfold Path to attain sainthood!

why would you ever get enlightened in a place that is so good and pure that you have no motivation to become enlightened. the only thing that would happen in the "pure land" if it existed, is that you would eventually pass on, and be reborn back here. or perhaps a lower realm

As a Pure land practitioner after 35 years still finding the profound meaning of it found his doctrinal explanation a but shallow, but his framework of the world based on it was spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed his talk and the reminder of how even the worst of our suffering speaks of wisdom. Pure land sutras speak of everything teaching the dharma, and indeed, our contemporary existence all speaking the truth of Buddha nature is Pure land, if we choose to embrace it as such.

Your contention that Pure Land teachings appeared a 1000 years after the Buddha’s time is certainly incorrect.
I could very easily apply your same criticism of Pure Land followers yo many Theravāda followers who not only don’t meditate, they certainly don’t follow the five precepts. SE Asia is full of Buddhist who have never made one bit of improvement in their conduct.
But that’s not really fair, is it? Because there are plenty who have followed both of those traditions who are wonderful followers who should emulated. .
I have been a Buddhist for twenty years. Took precepts and refuge in Therevada yet at this stage of my life my practice is the Nembutsu of Jodo shu. When one enters deeply into pure land practice one actually finds all teachings contained therein. I would suggest deeper reading of master Shan Tao,Honen and ippen. Gassho

Can I know what teachings did you find? Was it in accordance with Buddha Shakyamuni teachings?
Ironically, in my view, Ajahn Brahm encapsulates the essence of nembutsu other-power teaching in this talk, even though he rejects the superficial idea. So, while the idea of nembutsu bringing you to the pure land after death may not be supported in Theravada, the idea of other-power seems to be, in the sense that we have no separate self, and we are not in control... so who is? The universe we are one with--including the Amitabha Buddha in all of us. Though, once again, Theravada does not teach the concept of Buddha nature (tathagatagarbha)
Pure land is simply the most easy, practical techniques in buddhism, one medicine for all. Amitabha is the answer for everything. you can use it as meditation, mindulness concentration, peace of mind, away from all moods, emotions, scattering mind. anyone can do it , anywhere, anytimes.. no need sitting, walking, prostrations, no rituals. It is not short cut, it is more than short cut. it is simplicity, practical. all you need to recite amitabha buddha , so you are not drowning in your thought or negative. But it is not easy, it is just simple that is all. And for people do not practice it, they think, it is fantasy like christianity, islam or juduism. it is not, it is real buddhism with clear, clarity and no nonses approach.

The profound teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and the Mahayana abide within the Pure Land teachings. This is what sets them apart from the incoherent and garbled teachings of the Abrahamic religions, and their God who, as described in scripture, lacks the limitless compassion for all sentient beings embodied even in a bodhisattva.
If we can eliminate our anger, hatred, greed, discontent, and jealousy, and cultivate a state of mind that is pure, serene, content, and carefree, then we will see a pure land everywhere.

I believe I will be reborn into a physical representation of pure land
Ajahn Brahm's talks are great. Much of what he says is true for both the teachings from the Pali suttas as well as the highest teachings from the Mahayana sutras. The Lotus Sutra is very clear that we should not view the Pure Land dualistically but instead see the Pure Land in our own world.
That's a pretty bold statement to make saying he understands the highest teachings of Mahayana Sutra's. Perhaps you should investigate the teachings of Master Shandao who was incarnation of Amitabha Buddha. Just like Ajahn Brahm there is a story I believe in this video I will share with you that a Master challenged Master Shandao with this same thought being talked about in this video and I will just say at the end of their debate, the other Master became Master Shandao's Disciple. Watch these 2 video's if you have any curiosity in what I'm saying. Also, Venerable Luang Por Sumedho who is the senior of Ajahn Brahm was very close to the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua because he said Master Hua was like his own Master Ajahn Chah. Master Hua did a commentary on the Amitabha Sutra and if you read it it's pretty clear its not to be mistaken for a puremind pureland approach. Sages of the past have all talked about the Western Pureland, and also the Last Dharma that will be left in the world when the Dharma Ending age is at it's very end is the name Namo Amituofo because it's the last Dharma to save living beings not because of puremind but because of Amitabha Buddha's 18th vow. People should investigate the Pureland Teachings more before they take the word of one Master that isn't even in the tradition and taking his own view point on the teachings. I'm not writing this comment to "prove my point" or "be right" but I am sharing to say many Patriarch's in their respected lineages of the past would very much disagree with this view on the Pureland. Master Hua was the 45th Patriarch in the Chan Lineage but never for a second did he say such things about the Pureland and very much encourages people to be reborn there. Calling Amitabha Buddha's name is a way of meditation, instead of breath. When we call His name, we remember His wonderful characters, our bad characters like anger, greed, jealosy disappear.
Although, in the beginning, he gave a very distorted, inaccurate view of Pure Land Buddhism, the rest of his talk was great.

Great Dhamma talk
I usually enjoy Venerable’s talks but I found this one rather strange. I don’t know why he has a go like this at Pure Land, I practise a mixture of Chan and Pure Land and my experience is nothing like what the Venerable describes. We follow the 5 precepts, indeed our induction is the 5 precepts ceremony. I have never heard any Pure Land follower to say they can do anything, no worries about what they do. Where does Venerable get these ideas from?

Yes, great talk. Still only half way through... When Ajahn said "This is the Pure Land. You're been reborn here. This is it." I almost fainted. So true. I have to appreciate what we have in the world more. I have the chance to meet people and be there and share with them and while sharing make both of our lives better. What can be better than that. I have to be honest, as one scorched and scolded by High Church rights and ceremony, I find the Pure Land doctrine very uncomfortable - especially here in Asia where all manner of gilt, golden, and baroque excess makes visiting a temple akin to going to the vatican (with just extra layers of gold). The sheer number of Gautama look-alikes is confusing, boggling, and reminds me more of rococo churches in Austria than the pure simple teachings of Gautama Buddha. But this is just my feeling. Also, the number of times I bought a "Buddha" statue without my glasses on, only to discover when I got home that it was one of the many buddhas within Pure Land Buddhism has been extremely annoying. ;)

I was curious, if I wanted to come out there sometime to be a monk would I have to not be on antidepressants or is that okay? Because I know monks aren't suppose to have intoxicants so I was wondering if that falls under the same rule?

I love you to death, Ajahn, but this is literally one of the most superficial representations of pure land Buddhism I’ve ever heard. I suggest you study the practice/teaching more deeply, or refrain from pontificating on matters which are not included in your area of expertise. You are basically calling Pure Land Buddhism a lazy path for those who just want to party in this lifetime, and it's actually pretty insulting to those of us who both practice now AND believe we will have the opportunity to perfect that practice in the next life. Please don't denigrate the beliefs of your fellow Buddhists just because they may not be taught in your own chosen sect. It's no better than what the Christian denominations do. ☮️💟🕉️
Death follows dmt rules. If you conquer your fear of death in life ypu can choose where you want to go next. Same with dmt, with intent and following your breath you can go to many of the hell and heaven realms. My friend who travel says 90 percent of the souls who end up in hell simply thought they deserved to be there. The same goes for heaven they say it in the Luthren religion. Pray to God for salvation before death and you'll be accepted into the kingdom of heaven. There is a reason they are called the great attractors. Aim up

If you don't know say, you don't know, don't harm your karma. Pure land is as good or better.
Becoming a stream-enterer, a once-returner, a non-returner, or an arahant the Theravada way may well be magical fiction for most people . I know my prospects are not great. Probably the best I can hope for in Theravada world is to be reborn in the deva realms

I’m 6 years late 😊, I just discovered this talk and your comment. There’s a good talk by a nun from the Deer Park monastery. She’s a disciple of Thich Nat Hunh. I found her talk very empathetic and real and helps me much in my grief.

The Buddha went through aeons of lifetimes in perfection of his paramis to be the enlightened one and to declare the Noble Eightfold path as the shortcut and the fastest, only path to liberation. How fortunate are we that we do not have to go through the same long journey of perfection to know this path to liberation! All we need to do is to follow and practice. Sadhu!
