- How To Make Handle Scales For A Knife - The Easy Way
In this video I´m making some quick and easy handle scales for an old, crappy knife.
Just another simple way to build vital stuff in and after the apocalypse.

Love the shop safety practice
Good content, I’d love to see you keep making it!
Please wear eye protection, especially around saw and sander - there’s no warnings on penetrating trauma to eyeball.
You *really* should consider also wearing ear & inhalation protection - those are less immediate risk - but damage is guaranteed in the long run if you don’t.
I’m not trying to be preachy, but do please give it some thought.
Nice work on the knife scales, I really enjoyed the vid.
Cheers
Very cool knife. You did a good on that!!
Great vid, thanks Survival Lilly for showing him in your homemade gas mask video so I can watch a good RUclipsr
Eh alle deutsch hier
turned out very nicely. i've done that with an old machete that had a crappy broken plastic handle but had a good steel blade.
TURNED OUT NICE
Cool video. Great job giving that blade a new life.
Awesome video! I love how you improvised for the pins.
Inspirational and really interesting choice of fixings.
Nice work. Came out looking great!
That was an awesome video, great improvisation with that copper fuel line. I really like how those scales came out with the motor oil, outstanding!!
what did he actualy improvise? he has a very good machine shop, and just took the material from around him. i have much pooorer tools and scavange materials all the time, hell sometimes i use empty cartidges for brass when i do an inlay or such. and i do not call it improvising.
"the easy way"??? more like the "if you have a fully decked out woodshop way"
everything he used a power tool for you can do with a hand tool.
it will just take more time and patience,
Im 16, i have two saws some files a drill and a pencil. I have made 6 sets of fairly nice scales
Since that comment I've gotten a 4x36 belt sander and i can grind bevels of knives and contor scales well I've git a drill too
You can make basic handle scales with just a few raps a saw and some sandpaper
@@karvast5726 yeah, and good ones at that, but it takes a lot of time.
The scales turned out nice. Good video!
Excellent work!
You did a very good job love the old engine oil stain
That's amazing 👏
Nice job you are an artist
Nice work! In the apocolypse I would probably save my electricity to keep my family warm through the winter and wrap knife blanks in duct tape and/or paracord to make handles. You gotta have priorities in the apocolypse! 🤣
Damn got nervous when you split that scale with a table saw. Nice video
Thanks for sharing. Good yob on that handle!
good easy and fantastic ,we see that in your mountains live happy jejeje
Well done on a great video. Thank you for sharing. Top$
so much skill & talent! thank you
+CarolPNW -Skills and talents are qualities you get automatically by trying and doing stuff (and sometimes by f**** up things really bad ;). Everyone can do it.
But thank you very much for the compliment!
I really like your work,it's amazing I wish I had the the skill to create something like you do its incredible keep up the good the work👍✌️😄
My friend is slowly dying right now of dust in his lungs.... just sayin... Great knife!
Rhyannon Lallatin that's what I was thinking. I'm a decorator sometimes I'm sanding all day
I was holding my breath the whole time he was sanding. 😳
wood is organic and will just be absorbed and filtered out by the body through natural processess.
muffemod are you sure?
@@muffemod There was a chap on The (Now defunct) British Blades forum that was sanding some exotic wood, It almost killed him, It turned out to be really toxic!!
Great job on that knife. You took an old knife and gave it a new beginning,...AWESOME! I'm subscribing to your channel, and I look forward to more great videos.
+jamzach thank you very much. Appreciate your support!
Awesome job
Non OSHA approved, but you did it and it works...cool
Great video
great vid!!!!
this ole boy isn't scared of any dust
Thanks for making that video I think I might try that
Wow,
Nice..!
Good job, well done. Jeff
great idea with the engine oil. never thought to do that but will use it in the future. subbed.
Ich freue mich immer wenn ich sehe das du ein neues Video geuploadet hast :) mach weiter so !
+ch1ntz Danke...freut mich immer, so etwas zu hören!
that's a nice looking shank bud!
Wonderbar!
OK, that was cool!
your vids are the best!!!!!!!😄
Hi. I like all of your videos. Nice job . And survivalily bring me this channel.. Succes
Thanks for the video
Very interesting video.
Anyone screaming "straighten the fuel line before you cut it"?
You've got some balls sanding that handle without any protection for the blade!
Agreed. Knife making 101: Safety glasses, Taping up the blade edge and a respirator wouldn't be a bad idea.
@@shaolinfox30 Clearly it's the first time he's done this. He has all his fingers!
Awesome
Thanks for sharing. But, please use a dustmask! Your lung is the best filter, but you can't change it. ;)
What don't kill you makes you stronger
Clever sway to prevent anyone from stealing the knife, soak the scales in toxic used motor oil.
Toxic??? Go hug another tree.
@@scbane Yes, toxic. Used motor oil is carcinogenic. That's why it's considered hazardous waste.
You wearn't allowed to play outside as a child,I'm betting.
@@bruceclark5627 I'm still not allowed to play outside!
good job
Survival Lily sent us to you....we subbed yah, cause she vouches for you. Looking forward to picking up Tips and Tricks from you. Cheers
+Kanzee -Thank you for subscribing to my channel...Really appreciate your support!
Sind sehr schöne Ideen dabei ! Werde bestimmt einige umsetzen ;D
thank you for sharing,,safety glasses hun............kids watch
nice video. bot. in an apocilyptic senerio. i feel it would be simply wraped in tape and fabric.
I don't know about easy but it was certainly cheap wood and stain. Gave me some good ideals. Gonna try pallet wood also as jmc71795 suggested. Thanks for the info everyone. Great video.
Good thing a ban saw would be easy to find in the apacolopse
You are very brave, dude. Your and so close the a table saw blade gives me the creeps.
Fantastic work. But I had a table saw accident doing exactly what you were doing. The piece kicked back so violent that it force my right hand back and shoved my left hand into the saw, wasted three fingers. I know longer let my left hand come past the front of the blade no matter what I'm doing.
Old engine oil? (Looks like diesel not changed on time). Not near my food, thank you or even on my skin. There is a reason why mechanics wear rubber gloves now days.
As an A.S.E. certified mechanic,I can tell you %99 of us wear gloves because it's cheaper than hand cleaner and it's easier to take and faster to just take them off when getting in a customers vehicle.
Did you make the rig on the band saw?? Does it help keep the blade from twisting?? I ‘d like to see a video showing how you made that!
I have tried to make it, this is not easy, but I managed to do it
good job, man! I really enjoy watching your work!
Sehr coole Ideen!!

Nice job! came out splendid and the camera person did an admirable job as well. What country are you in?
+BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose - Austria
PostapocalypticGarage beautiful country. I skied in my youth and in 1977-80, I skied the alps and anywhere else that would let a drunk/stoned America ski. I even skied Innsbruck.
Subbed!
looks very nice bro. a bit on the fat side but rather than that it looks nice. the idea on the old (used) car oil is great. love it.
cheers, Mike
+survivalmike Thank you very much bro! Feels good to hear that from a professional knife maker!
Down and dirty but you got the job done and gave me a few tips. Perhaps a finer belt on the sander would have been useful. Very good, thanks.
Very nice outline with that oil.. Is it old used car oil ?
super
Thanks
good job first of all.
Do you prefer male & female rivits or a solid rod to attach the scales?
That was a fun watch. Plus, Everybody wants you to be safer so you won't have an insurance claim but there is no insurance in a post apocalyptic world. That's also a cool accent. Are you from Alabama? :)
Excelent!!
What is that black liquid you used in the wood?
Thanks!
+zeroa6 -used engine oil from my 4x4
nice vid, well done. btw, what kind of wax/oil do you use in your mustache/beard?
+Jake Johnson Nothing at all...just a comb every morning
I liked the music too.
I have that same g-shock watch
excellent show as usual there's a company in Springfield Missouri it's called Grizzly Industrial you may want to take a look at their catalog you can order one I'm sure
+James Lane Thanks for the tip...checked it out already...really nice products...and they even are shipping to Austria👍👌
out of curiosity what is the knife you are using at 3:31 ? great video! i don't have any fancy tools but i suspect a rasp and files will work.
+TheElvenArcher For sure you can do everything with handtools...it will take you just a little bit longer but you'll have a much nicer outcome in the most cases.
The knife is the 'tactical hunter' from Ed Mahony. It's similar to the 'magnum urban king' from Böker knifes.
thanks
Dude, please wear a dust mask or respirator when power sanding. All of that fine sanding dust is going into your lungs. Also, your fingers were way too close to the table saw blade, use featherboards or push sticks to keep your fingers out of the danger zone.
Breathing was done off camera for safety. Also, a trained stunt person was used in the shots where hands were at risk.
Dale Martin Vikings don't care about safety
it's all a joke until someone gets lung cancer or cuts off a finger. I've seen both first hand and it's not pretty.
Can't keep everyone safe... Laughing is good for your health... With our two-prong attack on danger, we will save the world, or die trying.
Buck Starchaser haha
I can't wait for the video when your jewelry gets caught
or his beard, scarf etc lol
@@radionicsoftware5026 that's a buff aka a tube on his neck so it wont dangle down. If hes getting close enough to put his beard or neck into power tools somethings wrong lol. But yeah rings and jewelry are big no no's. Nobody wants a finger desheathed
Was that a regular drill bit? Great idea using the hot glue!
Hey presto! One Carcinogenic knife.
good video! be careful though... you only have ten fingers... just an old guys advice. Keep the videos coming!
Hi, were those scales made from white oak? That knife looks like it will last a few lifetimes. Nice job, nice shop.
Ray....Oklahoma
Shit I have a old crappy Knife I can do this too aswell lmao!! Thank you & always enjoy your videos man keep em coming!
+Survivalist by Nature -Thanks bro...just do it ;)
PostapocalypticGarage I am actually just making some minor edits to my bag before I make a video
Great job - hope you listened to previous commentary about masks?
What knife at 3:29?
u make it look so easy good job , me i ask u sir did u put it in used car oil ? and thx for the video
+Mossine Gago -yes...just regular used engine oil stains the wood really nicely and gives it good protection and water repelling capabilities
cool thx for answer , and good luck in ur channel we looking for new videos, thx agin
ok cool thx for answer and good luck in ur channel
I never knew you could use old engine oil to stain wood. Makes sense but I never though about it. Is there any advantage to it over a traditional stain?
+Mr. Beard - basically I prefer mineral oils over natural products...other than that there is no real other advantage except the pigments (black color)...the 'pigment' is basically fine metal dust from the moving parts of your engine. So it's very resistant to fading or friction.
Est ce que tu peux montrer le plan de la lame du couteau sur papiet.
merci
I learned "old engine oil". I will try that.
Just a suggestion, for nicer, but free wood, old pallets. Pallets tend to be made of hardwood, much of which has a very cool grain, when polished, and I've used them for knife and pistol grips.
na, just look in the forest for dead hardwood or broken branches. Take it home, dry it - done ;)
+jmcr71795
Really? All the pallets I have ever seen are crappy softwood. Usually pine.
Good to know. I'm giving it a try
All the pallets I've seen are pine and a few were cedar.
Most pallet are made out of pine which is definitly not my definition of "hardwood"
I would recommend a face mask and eye protection. Other than that, I really like your work. 🤙🏽👍🏽 thanks for sharing.
No electricity in an apocalyptic scenario. How you going to run them sanders and saws?
Perhaps you have heard of generators or solar power?
Dennis Grisham I was thinking the same thing!!!😂
Dennis Grisham
Car battery
you didn`t see the solar panels on his roof?
SOBA FET emp
Dude, your sander is really shaky. I think you should fix that first.
I look forward to seeing new videos from you in my notifications, its definitely one of my favorite channels now.
+Troy Rhoades Thanks my friend. Feels good to hear that from you!
Nice shop/work but why did we forego everything you learn in woodshop 101?
Staubmaske ftw
Nice video ..just take more precautions in the shop...you know what I mean
looks like you are using a really soft wood?
I have the same belt sander :D But im a balachsmith
