    In this Majority Report clip, Owen Jones talks about how he was scolded by the Labour establishment for destroying the party.
    "Jeremy Corbyn’s critics have been forced to backtrack following last night’s shock election result, which saw Labour secure 261 seats and the Tories loses their majority.
    Sceptical political pundits and Labour MPs who were once deeply sceptical of Corbyn have now been forced to admit that they were wrong in light of Labour’s success.
    Labour managed to defy the odds and add 29 seats to their numbers in parliament.
    Corbyn secured a national vote of 40% for his party - higher than Tony Blair achieved in 2005. And in Wales, Labour got its highest share of the vote since 1997, securing 48.9%.
    Meanwhile, the Conservatives lost 12 seats in the UK, leaving them short of the 326 majority needed, with just 318 MPs."*

    Your title is completely wrong. Owen Jones is NOT Labour sceptic, never has been. He didn't like Corbyn for a while, but was still supporting Labour, attending fundraising events for the party. Since he was about 16 he has been a member of the Labour Party, with no breaks.

      He did more to increase the percentage of the party's vote than any other in decades. The net gain of seats was almost unique in history. And he could be forming a government if the electoral disaster in Scotland with the SNP had not happened. Remember, Labor lost Scotland then it is assumed that any future government of the party will be in alliance with the SNP and this could have happened had it not been for the electoral mess in the region.

    • @jacquescelliers6644

      Actually, Corbyn gained seats and the Tories lost the seats. It was a parliamentary election, not a presidential election. No party outright won or lost, it doesn't work like that.

    Can't wait for Corbyn to be P.M, he's such a wonderful, decisive, tolerant man! He's so tolerant in fact that he wont even stand up against xenophobes in his own party. I wonder how long it will take him to announce his first pogrom or gulag for those with the wrong ideas? He's not a nice old man he's a relic of the 80's who I find rather sinister, unfortunately as we could do with a strong opposition in the UK and all we've got at the moment are the Scottish NATIONALISTS.

      I needed a laugh, thanks. If you think I sound like a Blairite I'm going to assume you're either twelve years old or drunk. In what way is the Great Cobb bringing principle to Labour? I'd love to know. As far as I'm concerned Labour, Tories and the rest need a revolution up there backsides and the sooner the better.

    • @gerbil5101
      @gerbil5101 6 лет назад

      To be fair, I think most people would think you sound like a Blairite. Because you sound like a fucking Blairite. Or a LIb Dem, but they're basically the same thing anyway: Centrist faux-liberals. Maybe you are neither, but the things you have written here are exactly the kinds of things that you would expect someone of such political persuasions to say. So... you know, maybe stop writing such utter drivel if you don't like being called a Blairite.
      When you say that Corbyn has failed to stand up against xenophobia in Labour you must surely be talking about leaving the EU (the Blairites favourite refrain). You must also surely realise that reducing this issue to "xenophobia" is incredibly dishonest, or you are drunk, or 12yrs old.
      We had a vote -- *We* lost -- stop crying!

    The incessant demonising of Corbyn during his period as leader actually backfired on the perpetrators. When the election campaign started, people were expecting to see someone weak, someone who was a poor communicator, someone who didn't have a vision.
    When people actually saw him on their TV screens, they came to the realisation they had been lied to. In a situation like that, people will support the underdog because they hate negative campaigns.
    That change of attitude won't dissipate, people will remember the smear campaigns, and the Tories and the right wing press will, I believe, pay the price for their hubris.

    Owen wasn't wrong to think that; most of Labour's voters & membership (including myself) thought that Jeremy has been demonised by right wing press so much & Labour is sitting at 24% & if a snap election is called; Jeremy will become a liability for left... Owen is as lefty as it gets! & yes when the elections were called (basically because he was so far behind) almost the entire party came together & fought & took Labour from 24% to 40% in few weeks & Jeremy went to the mass electorate for the first time & proved he can win! Now Tories literally are in government without any power & Jeremy & Labour just have to count the days till government collapses mainly on Brexit & we have a Labour government!
    So STOP saying anything about Owen; he wasn't wrong & he did his 100% to help Jeremy in all 3 elections!

    Skeptic? The hell are you on about?
    He wasn't exactly wrong either in his beleaguered and tepid criticism. Labour lost the election. but gained seats, whereas everyone else believed they'd be wiped out. Labour, due to conservative incompetence now only need 62 seats in order to have a majority of 1. That result was with one of the most incompetent Conservative campaigns in living memory, and 10 years of austerity.
    Do yourself a favor and stop covering UK politics as if you know what is going on there, because you most certainly do not.

    • @Comando96
      @Comando96 7 лет назад

      You are ignorant are you? There's a Guardian Article you should look up _"How Jeremy Corbyn managed to bring Ukip voters back to Labour"_
      _"But many former Labour voters who had switched to Ukip in previous elections had done so out of disillusionment with New Labour, which lost 5m votes between 1997 and 2010._
      _Labour’s policy platform under Corbyn, and crucially the party’s respect for the result of the referendum, helped to win those Ukip voters back. The lazy caricature of Ukip supporters in the north of England as caring only about immigration was buried, as those voters chose instead Labour’s viable plan to improve their material wealth."_
      You can also look at the UKIP swing in individual constituencies, where the UKIP vote went mainly towards Labour, as opposed to the fear of the vote mostly going to the Conservatives. This is why I got so annoyed with people calling UKIP supporters middle England racists, as a lot weren't. Its similar to your weird situation where when polled most conservatives wanted to Vote Sanders, rather than Trump, but would vote Trump over Hillary.
      These are all a few example constituencies on wikipedia. The format should be /wiki/[paste]
      *Scroll down to the election section, and compare 2015 to 2017. Particularly look at the swing*
      Altrincham_and_Sale_West_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Braintree_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Canterbury_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Croydon_North_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Ealing_Southall_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Harwich_and_North_Essex_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Islington_South_and_Finsbury_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Luton_South_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Ludlow_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      Mid_Worcestershire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)
      If you don't trust my sample then pick your own. You will see a similar trend. The only randomly clicked constituency I didn't pick was Bradford, due to George Galloway's presence as an MP making it an oddity.
      Serious advise to you, don't attempt to guesstimate the politics of another country without studying it, or directly following the election.

    • @Comando96
      @Comando96 7 лет назад

      Because the left vote isn't split outside of Scotland to nearly the degree it has been in previous elections. With all Scottish seats going to Labour, and assume the greens die, Labour would still be sort seats and need to unify the Lib Dems and the DUP. The Lib Dems are also for all intents and purposes a dead party.
      But my main point stands, and you tacitly accept my first argument as you could only deign to criticize my non-addressing of the second(I too can play these cancerous word games). The reason that Labour did as well as they did, everything else standing was that the tories made the poor fearful, so those who voted brexit, had their options severely limited. He is still not popular, and in the face of a more reasonable conservative manifesto, those initial 20 point polls may have ended up at 10-15, and led to a comfy conservative victory.

    • @OsefKincaid
      @OsefKincaid 7 лет назад

      The overall point I'm making is that the completely allied forces of the right (regardless of how many UKIP voters went to labour) are only able to muster a 2% lead over the non-allied forces of the left. That point is undisputably true. So you can act all smug about how many people went from UKIP and how I didn't know that (that's true, I didn't think that many did but I'll take your word for it), it won't change that stuff like "b-b-but she won" are talking points of the highest order.

      This wasn't a vote for Corbyn's Labour. It was a vote against a harder line Conservative Party. Labour (Corbyn & Skinner in particular) unbeknownst to this show were complicit in Brexit. In fact Skinner who has already been deified by this show voted for it! Not to mention the fact that Corbyn has never met an enemy of the West for which he hasn't held some sympathy. Not to mention just the IRA for christ's sake! Couple that with the fact that he said he'd be unwilling to retaliate against a nuclear strike and you have someone not only not qualified to lead but not fit for opposition as well. In fact had Labour been more centrist like the Lib Dems who also picked up seats - they would have not only picked up seats they'd have won a majority! Corbyn is still quite simply too far left to be acceptable by the majority of people. And furthermore than that, to say this is in any way translatable to the US election is so off the mark as to not even be taken seriously. This however is basically a children's program at this point. So far be it from me to expect this audience to understand the nuances of parliamentary democracy. You simply see in your mind Corbyn as your godhead Sanders. And therefore hereafter, that is the lens in which you view all things regarding these islands and everywhere in between.

    • @jacquescelliers6644

      The whole talking about Corbyn just to relate his success to Bernies is so misguided. Corbyn is far more effective (which is the opposite to what those wearing the Sanders glasses think). It shows they have the mood wrong like they did during the pres election, a sure way to make sure Trump wins reelection. The things the US left crits Corbyn for are the things that make him popular, and they are also the things that Bernie lacks.

      The dynamics are different. Few Independent and young voters vote in primaries, Clinton won by smashing Sanders with old voters while Sanders crushed her with young voters, but they are underrepresented in the primaries. Also, most people who voted for Clinton like Sanders and vice versa, so it's a different dynamic.

    • @jacquescelliers6644
      @jacquescelliers6644 7 лет назад

      This. Bernie couldn't even beat his own left-leaning party, how does he expect to beat the republican machine? He would have been destroyed by Trump.

    • @KironVB
      @KironVB 7 лет назад

      Bernie couldn't beat his own party because of the momentum behind Clinton essentially, she had the name recognition, the entire stage was set for years for her to be the nom and Bernie was literally a nobody. The fact Bernie came slow close from being a "joke candidate" actually showed how weak Clinton was.
      Also the reason Clinton lost was really 2 reasons, Gerrymandering/vote rigging, but also the Clinton team ran the worst campaign I've seen in my life. It had no message, spoke to nothing and never talked about policy. It just assumed name recognition and Demographics alone were going to carry her, but it just didn't happen. It was lazy. There is no way in hell Bernie would have ran a campaign that bad. He would have been running rallies all across the Rust Belt. What did the Republican Machine even have on Bernie that was anywhere near the shit against Trump? What he wrote erotic fanfiction when he was a 20 year old? Who cares?
      There was no way Bernie would have lost the Rust Belt and he would have won literally every seat Clinton would have won because they weren't turning red anyway.
      Bernie 100% would have won. It could have been close, but honestly I don't even think it would have been close. Bernie had actually a real message for people of the Rust Belt and is now the most popular politician in the entire US.
      What liberals need to learn is elections are not about who is left or right or moderate, it's about who has vision who speaks to people. Trump was out there working his ass off stealing basically left wing populist economic messages, while Clinton had "America is already great" and "I'm with her". Trump had the vision. I called that election in early September and I was sadly right.

    • @jacquescelliers6644
      @jacquescelliers6644 7 лет назад

      Yeah the dem's played it dirty, but the Republicans wouldn't have? The presidential race was gerrymandered in Trumps favor.
      That's my point, Bernie couldn't take on the democrats who lets be honest are a better bunch than the republicans. The presidential race would have gone much the same as the primaries. In theory Bernie would have won the primary, but he didn't. In theory Bernie would win the pres election, but he wouldn't. The presidential election wouldn't have been fair just because it was against Bernie and not Clinton (who actually beat Trump).
      Its not just the democrats that are corrupt, so are the republicans and even more so. Its not just about beating them in a fair contest, its about beating them in an unfair contest (because lets face, candidates like Bernie and Corbyn will never get a fair contest). Corbyn managed to beat his party not for being like Bernie, but for being not like him. The things that have made Corbyn so successful are qualities Bernie doesn't posses. Just look how Bernie buckled and endorsed Hillary, he doesn't have the strength or back bone to stand up for himself. Bernie panders to those who fight him, while Corbyn fights back. Bernie moderates what he says while Corbyn purposelessly says things that will get him in trouble with the media.
      Sanders is too moderate and not militant enough. Trump, however, was extremely militant, aggressive and beat the media at their own game (Like Corbyn). Sanders is not a populist, he is a moderate.

      You don't understand the dynamics of a presidential election. Just flip a few states that Hillary lost and boom Bernie is President. Bernie BEAT Hillary in Wisconsin and Michigan, two critical states that Hillary lost to Trump. Who cares that Hillary beat Bernie in states like California, New York, Georgia, or Texas? Those states were never going to flip in either direction.

    unfortunately you know absolutely nothing. I have to admit to learning a lot from this election and the two elections before. Other than the terribly election campaign by the Tories there's nothing much to say about them specifically. Many of the ordinary people of the UK have had a tough time and that has strengthened Labours appeal. Sensible people however know that without economic growth there will be less money for the public services that they hold dear. The UK has changed over the last 3 decades and far fewer people are employed in safe state funded jobs. Labour MPs rebelled against Corbyn because he represents a siloed left leaning section of people who will always vote Labour. MPs however have to be elected by their constituents who are a wide range of the public. Since global financial crisis of 2008 (which affected the US too) the left has not stood up for the previous Labour administration while it was attacked by the Tories because they don't view the Blair/Brown administration as being a Labour government (The British electorate have not made that distinction. The Labour party is wrongly considered to be financially irresponsible - under Corbyn it really would be). The last 3 elections have been close with either no/slim majority. The British public are not polarised in the same way as the US are. We want a socially responsible but business friendly government. Give us that and we'll all vote for it. We don't want the 70s. We do know what a disaster that will be. Let's hope Brexit is not a disaster. Unfortunately it will be and ordinary people will pay the price of Brexit

      Most Brits are sick to the back teeth with austerity. It does shit for the national deficit and just hurts ordinary people.

      Thumper: true. A rapid fall in tax income in 2008/09; Iraq/Afghanistan; and bailing out the banks did massively increase the national debt (as it did in most western economies). However the impact has not fully been felt because the bank of England has been able to swap short term high interest loans for much longer term low interest loans. If interest rates /inflation rise (even moderately) then the government will be forced to borrow much less. WHEN that happens it will hurt. As usual it will hurt poor people disproportionately

    Jeremy Corbyn wants unlimited and uncontrolled immigration into the UK. The people of the UK would be utterly mad to vote for someone with such opinions.

      I agree totally. May was completely useless as Home Sectary. I am not a Tory supporter.

      DEUS VULT I'm not sure any public official is going to match our individual agendas 100% So we all have to weigh our importance levels.
      And based on the problems seemingly facing Britain, it could make since not to vote for him. America doesn't face a high level of problems with terrorism linked to immigration.

      That's an outright lie. CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION WAS IN THE MANIFESTO. As was leaving the single market (which includes immigration).
      Are you even British? He made it clear he was removing TARGETS because they have actually never even been met and they do nothing to actually control immigration. Removing pointless targets and quotas is not the same as "unlimited and uncontrolled".
      But yeah, pretend you are not a Tory. Its the only way you lying Tories can make yourself seem reasonable and not completely bat shit crazy.

      No, the labour policy is to have controlled immigration.
      You're completely wrong.

      Jeremy is on record as saying on many occasions that he does not want to put an upper limit on immigration.
