- Most AAA games don't include local multiplayer, and our community is missing out on the opportunity to share games with each other by playing side-by-side. This social aspect teaches us how to behave civilly even when a game gets heated or goes poorly.

What do we lose when we stop including local multiplayer in our games?
We lose local multiplayer, and have to set up LAN parties with multiple copies of the game and TV setups to play with local friends. Darn it, Platinum Games! The Wonderful 101 is not enough! I wanted to play Anarchy Reigns and Bayonetta 2 with other people on one console, sitting beside one another! I don't care about the frame rate or the visibility, I just want the experience. I hope the new Dissidia game will have local multiplayer…
+Extra Credits You lose the ability to play with your friends and family at home, some of my best memories are playing co op with my bro on halo 2, but I couldn't do that in halo 5.. :(
Plus racing games need local play, burnout 3 was the shit, but on ps4 the only racing game i know of that has local multiplayer is rocket league
We would be disconnected to people close to us............ unless they brought their console with them when they dropped on by and you guys just play together in the same(Assuming you have an extra TV for him to plug his console in) :) But I really hope that local multiplayer will never die cause it's an awesome way to hangout with the people close to you
+Extra Credits I'm pretty much of a loner anyways...useless feature :'(
+SuperJonnyMario Maybe having some games with Local Multiplayer could give you an excuse to invite someone over ;)
1:54
I can't stop repeating this part, it's so cute the couple don't getting mad each other
I know right It's SO GOD DAMN CUTE
There are dozens of games I refuse to buy because they lack local multiplayer.
good 4 u
+Dale MacKinnon You are missing out on a lot of good games then
+Chosen One 41 It can't be a good game if it is missing an option that is very important to you.
RudolphRandolphRübenrunkler What a horrible attitude to have towards games. Call me crazy but I play games before I feel I have the knowledge to say if they aren't good. It's gamers like you that are the reason so many games today are formulaic paint by numbers these days. God forbid a game tries to do something different.
I agree. This is the reason I didn't get Splatoon- a game that shines in multiplayer and I can't even play it with my family?
I'm rooting for games with local multiplayer AND online play.
Monster Hunter 👍🏻
Like call of duty infinite
I miss being able to grab my brother on the couch and jump into some online matches because we can’t afford extra consoles and copies of the game.
Streets of rage 4
Two words: smash bros.
I cannot stress enough how much Nintendo has done in the last years to preserve local multiplayer. And how key this is in third-world slow-connection countries like my own.
For all the flak they take on being rather unskilled handling online gaming, the big N's games are a blessing to most of us in regions where people cannot easily access higher speeds.
I agree. I live in the middle of nowhere, with shitty internet connection, so local is really the only way I can play.
Not to mention being able to reach over and slap the person you're playing with greatly improves any multiplayer experience.
Purple Ice For split screen, everything needs to be rendered twice I believe. So for some games it would be too much for the system to handle.
Nathan is right. It takes some time and tinkering to keep the game running smoothly on splitscreen. Still it's not hard. Just take the graphics down for multiplayer and bam! You're done. Sure you need to figure out which things to take down so the game still looks decent and all that. Console problem mostly as they have limited hardware.
Sebastian Vazquez-Ferrero you're absolutely right. Thanks for sharing
Games not having local multiplayer is seriously my most hatted thing about the game industry today. 1st, because when the servers are shut down a lot of games will become worthless. 2nd, because some of my greatest memories come from playing games with friends. It was always a blast to invite a bunch of friends over and we would do system link Halo 2.
Also one of my most remembered teaching moments came from local multiplayer. I remember playing Goldeneye with my older brother and he kept beating me over and over and over. Finally I got so mad that I through my controller at the tv. It didn't break but I did this right as my Mom walked into the room. She instantly gave me a scolding and told me that if I can't play the game and not get upset when I loose, then I can't play the game at all. To this day I tend to be pretty level headed when I play games and just laugh it off when I loose.
And this is why I love Nintendo
Same
While nintendo is arguably the company putting the most effort in local multiplayer, they aren't scott free. Splatoon's local was very underwhelming, and pokken tournament's local only runs at 30fps. A fighting game, at 30fps. With that said, at least they still put a good bit of effort into local with the likes of smash and mario kart.
Well...
+TJOEL20 Kirby's Epic Yarn was pretty cute... I think that game's old now though. :P
+Nintendoman The Pokkén thing was because if hardware limitations, so they didn't have much of a choice. However, they still overcame this obstacle by allowing you to play at 60 fps over LAN if your friend has a Wii U as well. Although it's inconvenient to plug in your friend's Wii U whenever you want to play with them, it shows that the developers did everything they could to give us a good multiplayer experience.
I really agree with this. Some of my best memories are of playing console games together with my friends. Versing a friend or achieving a co-operative game together can be so much more lively when they're right there next to you
I watch ur vids ya prude.
Get away, you sleazy prune.
This is the exact reason I kept all my old systems...Blow off the dust, plug'em in, and watch kids faces light up the same way yours did...
1:50 Except when playing Mario Kart or Mario Party.
Friendships died, when these games were put into their respective consoles.
Long lasting friendships...
Sons were disowned...
Daughters became unwanted...
Grandparents were left to rot in their own mud...
It was a good weekend, really.
When my girlfriend and I are bored, we'd turn on the Wii and play Mario Kart. When we play together we become super competitive and desperate to be the winner. But then over time we both become really angry at the NPCs and we have this shared aggression towards the other characters =P
It really helps us forget about the stresses in life while allowing us to spend time together. Local Multiplayer is awesome!
hey Jragon you watch extra credits too, interesting!
Cool
FRICKING BABY MARIO WITH HIS DUMB BLUE SHELLS
Glad I'm not the only one who wages war against NPCs in games.
I'd add that local multiplayer has a far lower barrier to entry. Both my flatmates aren't gamers at all and wouldn't set up their machines to play Quake or Warcraft 3 over the LAN, but we'll play Towerfall together for hours. (this is reflected in the game's design: easy to learn, difficult to master, random pickups to even the odds a little)
Most of the time, I'm annoyed at the lack of LAN in modern games. Especially in RTS. StarCraft 2 is a wonderful game, but *how can you make an RTS without LAN?!*
+Gergely Kozar IKR?
+Gergely Kozar What happened to Blizzard, they used to be cool.
+Gergely Kozar, IKNR? too many games have withheld on local multiplayer, also in the FPS front. Me and my mates would have Halo parties of 8-12 blokes (with generally 4-5 xboxs), we would sit back play halo (often on custom maps one of us created) talk a whole load of jive, drink (although i stayed away from the alcohol giving me a good edge against every one else towards the end of the night) have pizza and it was a good time. nowadays Halo 4's progression system made it a little unfair to guest players on Xboxs (so we stuck with reach). but when halo 5 on xbox one came out we just stopped having the halo nights since there was no split screen and only 3 guys bothered to buy an xbox one.
Oh, I miss the times when we could actually get people together with a LAN party. Nowadays, nobody wants that anymore because the games they play don't have it anymore.
0815UserII funny i just had a lan party using halo MCC then later halo reach (via the emulator) on xbox ones, it was such a prick of a thing to set up there is no obvious way to set up system link on MCC (unlike earlier titles) as they wanted you to play online. Then when we got reach we had to connect all the xboxes by ethernet cable or we would get an error message every time we tried to connect then we had to create a custom game over xbox live in order for it to work. In both scenarios we HAD to use Xbox Live (i had to actually renew a subscription that i stopped over a year ago because i stopped playing xbox live, just so i could play one night of games), it really was a cash cow set up by microsoft. having to have Xbox live Gold for a freaking lan party as the xbox ones don't seem to have the drivers to support system link like the old 360s or original xboxs.
The "Didja buy it yet?" slide is by far my favorite slide in Extra Credits history.
But ... but with local multi I have to put on pants. :(
+TPRJones you just don't have the proper friends for pants-less-ness then.
+TPRJones
Friends don't judge friends for not having pants on
TPRJones A noble sacrifice indeed, my friend.
TPRJones use a sheet
Are you sure you need pants?
I think that most Halo fans would agree that as long as the series stays on consoles local multiplayer should still be an option.
My friend Gabe brought Halo 5 over for us to play on my XBONE, but then I looked at the back of the box. We were sad.
Heck, even if Halo made the jump to PC I still think that split screen should be an option. LAN and internet play should be a given though at least.
+Clyde Marshall Halo 5 not having splitscreen was like a bullet in my heart and solidified not getting an Xbone anytime soon. Hell, splitscreen is what I considered console gaming to be best at...
+Clyde Marshall It's weird to say that, but Halo 5 not having local multiplayer was the most important reason for me to buy a ps4. It could have single-handedly kept me on xbox systems.
+Clyde Marshall unfortunetly numbers speak. Its the best selling halo. My buddies who I played every freaking halo with, had to buy the game so we could experience it together.
I really miss local multiplayer. I loved introducing new friends to halo and get them addicted and rage quit to the point they got better than me
PS3 allowed 7 controllers to be attached and I can't think of ANY games that used more than 2
The e-sports...
Rachel Evans fifa series can have up 4 players
Smash 4 WiiU could get eight
Rayman Legends. It allows you to play with 4 people locally.
I believe that mortal kombat also allows for 4 people to play, but never tried it.
little big planet allows you to play with 2-7 controllers
Was that an Osomatsu-san reference at 1:08?!?! Cheers to whoever put that in! Loved that anime!
+BlurryHeart15 It totally is. XD. Good eye!
Nothing brings back fonder memories between me and brothers than talking about our couch multiplayer days. Having the 3 of us gang up on NPC in fatal four way matches in WWE, or amazing kills in Halo 1&2, or hilarious wrecks, wins, or chaos of mario kart, everything about Goldeneye, or even just rocking out in the first Guitar hero. Sure we loved playing the SNES and stuff too. But when all 3 of us could play, those are the memories we're most fond of.
It also helps us remember that on the other side of that wire is not just some faceless bot, but a f******** screenwatcher!
OMG
The osomatsu reference
What's that
It's at 1:09.
+Sven Producties | bleuthoot It's an anime about six brothers.
+DigitalZ hahaha glad to see this as one of the comments here, i had to do a double take. (more so with Ace Attorney reference as well given the anime started recently) ;)
wish that show didnt suck dick as more episodes came out was godly the first half
"Those times when a heated match got a little bit ragey" meaning "every time Mario Party was plugged in", right?
On the other hand, Mario Party generally had you going OH COME ON THAT'S BULLSHIT to the game, and then you'd laugh with your friends. It was actually part of the fun.
+Keiya Bachhuber Monopoly on the other hand almost always ends up with someone leaving the table saying "fuck this, I'm done".
+G. ShadowBroker for you maybe, but Monopoly was MADE to show people how hegemon capitalism will be mutated from the seeds of liberal capitalism - the game basically wants you to know how frustrating it can be in real life, if its so fuck fuck fuck in game. Nowadays they changed the rules a bit so rage quit decreases, and so do economic lectures, but I can always find people rejoicing how they were dry anal raped that one time in Monopoly and how they would LOVE to get that again if only "Micheal was here"
What do you think communist revolutions are, but people going fuck this to the game of real-life Monopoly? Were getting a bit off topic though.
Those college nights spent playing Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye 64. Filled with friendly shouting, smack talking, and rage inducing taunting. And we loved it.
Now I have to listen to 11-year-olds scream the same curse word over and over, and over, and over...because they can. Sigh.
I so wish I could play games with other people locally. so miss those special days where a few of us were all gathered in one room and getting cheered on or whatever. It was the best of times in my youth. Especially so when I went to the arcade in high school during lunch and other people would gather around the cabinet. I miss that level of interaction and the fun having someone stood/sat next to you used to mean.
Local Multiplayer YEAH!

Borderlands is one of the few triple a games that totally embraces local multiplayer
So many memories there. I still refuse to forget the rocket launcher my brother stole from me. Good times
I love that borderlands the handsome collection had 4 player split screen. it was awesome to bring 3 friends to enjoy a new game they haven't played
Lol at the matsuno brothers 1:10
The point about local coop introducing new players with a little help from their friends really stuck with me. Years ago, I went to a buddy's place he had a console I didn't, the Xbox 360. And that was the day I was introduced to Halo, which became one of the most played/consumed franchises of my gaming life! Shame about that new trilogy though.
Also 1:55, that was just too adorable.
The artist was on fire this episode!
I'm happy when me and my boyfriend can find a game that has local multiplayer. We don't have a lot of money and my boyfriend is the only one that has a compatible gaming computer. I do have a laptop but it over heats quickly because it is not meant for games. So when we find a Game that has both online and local multiplayer we have a lot of fun. I do understand why major game companies don't have local multiplayer but if we lose multiplayer then I can't enjoy games with my boyfriend. Our favorite game so far is a resident evil game that has local multiplayer IN the main story line. And player two has a different role to play in the game then player one. It is really cool :)
I know that you probably won't read this, but I strongly suggest you Lovers in a dangerous spacetime, a game that is basically only local co-op, it can also run on a craptop!
I love the subtle anime references they make 😂👌🏻
Ikr
...what for example ?? *_*
DarkThomy the six kids when he explained that you sell more games without local multiplayer were from the series osomatsu-san
I totally agree about the topic. But I just wanted to point out that there is still one mayor company who does great local multiplayer: Nintendo
+Kevin Kerkhoff I don't have a wii U, but if i had one it would be only because of Nintendo Land. Having some easy to learn minigames to play with 4 or 5 people is amazing! Plus, i love asymetric versus games.
I was not expecting an Osomatsu reference...
I died there
"you played FACE to FACE. Today this isn't the CASE"
:'( man i miss local multiplayer so much! ... That's it! I'm buying a Wii U, some controllers and invite my friends to play super smash!
... do you live in Louisiana?
No, I live in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
+Lokime ayy lmao

Chibi James is super cute too!

+max Eguizabal You liked yourself, didn't you?
+3DMega I would not do such unspeakable horrors
max Eguizabal Ok... *stares at you*
Why are people liking this?
it's always better to get angry at a person sitting next to you than being angry at the screen. fists are meant for faces, not couches!
+wizzzer1337 yeah but controllers still break just as easily regardless of if you throw it at the floor or your opponents. face
I hear you say people dont cuss froends out when right next to them. Have you ever gotten blue shelled?
XD
A huge thumbs up for mentioning Goldeneye! Loved that one so much. That was among the games we used to play when we were still all in the same area, others include: M.U.L.E. (on my C64!), various Bomberman games, Perfect Dark, Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc. Really miss those days so have been playing some board games locally now as well!
Never gonna get Halo 5 because they removed the local multiplayer. Part of the reason I love Halo is because of the ability to go to a game night and play some rounds with friends on the couch, without that and the story being lackluster there I have no reason to ever pick it up, or a Xbox One for that matter, because Halo was pretty much the only exclusive that had me considering it getting that console.
Same here. With Halo 3 & 4, the only reason I ever bought those games was for local multiplayer with friends. I wasn't interested much in the story and online multiplayer wasn't as fun(I also never agreed with the business practice known as "Xbox Live Gold").
Aimela I never had Xbox Live Gold either.
And for my friends group our main go to is Halo Reach.
343 said they would put it back into Halo 6, and they are also thinking of a game that uses local multiplayer where you explore the halo universe (or maybe an area, like a ring)
TheMasterchiefan Well that is good, because that is partially what Halo was build off of. The multiplayer and mainly the local multiplayer, it was stupid of them to not include it in Halo 5.
Also the co-op exploration things sounds like it could be fun.
A few years back now, I spent a weekend playing Portal 2 co-op with a girl I was seeing at the time. Whenever we'd get stuck on a puzzle, we'd get frustrated, stop, and have sex. Then we'd go back to the game, then we'd have sex again, and so on. This went on until night.I bring this up because I realise that just recently I've been alternating between playing games online and watching porn. Something has seriously gone wrong with this situation.
Horribly so.
So basically . . . . . Local multiplayer=sex
...wondering what part of Portal turned you on.
Co-op doesn't have GladOS or Wheatley, right? Or the fetish of being turned into a potato (or attacked by birds)? I'm confused.
+Kilyle Nothing in the game, outside of it just being a bonding, cooperative experience. Just sitting on the couch next to each other with my arms wrapped around her so my controller is resting on her chest. Proximity leads to sex. You can't shag someone over a wireless headset.
LittleJimmy835 Demolition Man would counter that assertion. But that was a weird movie :\
some of these vids makes me straight up emotional, great informative content and your pathos really hits home.
I really miss local co-op. Some of my best memories as a youngster were of 2-player megadrive stuff. What does and doesn't do local is starting to be a big factor in my choice of games.
To get around the lack of local multiplayer, my friends and I typically haul a machine to each others place and play side-by-side. We love it THAT much.
And that's why I always have a Nintendo console at hand. A few of your mates, plenty of beers, a couple of pizzas and 4 player smash/kart, and you've got yourself an awesome evening. It even helped me be better at my job, as I bonded with several of my work mates that way. I can't imagine doing it over the net.
I've been WAITING for this episode!!
Personal proximity is EVERYTHING to behavioral correction!
I think Artemis Spacebridge Simulator is an excellent example of local multiplayer done in a way that doesn't cost the company sales. Each person needs to have their own copy of the game (which they sell in heavily discounted packs for group play), but it's highly recommended everyone play in the same physical room. Not to mention, the game itself requires some serious teamwork, and is just fun. Of course, this strategy wouldn't work with a lot of genres, but for what it is, it works well.
I love local multi-player games. Especially when I invite 3-4 friends over and we all play competitive games like smash and Mario Kart. One moment we'll never live down as group is when we were playing Animal crossing Amiibo festival, it was the end of the month on the very last day. One friend says "I'll only win if (insert friend name here) goes bankrupt," we handed her the controller and she tapped her Amiibo. She landed on a negative space and we were all afraid, and then it happened, she went bankrupt. We were all screaming whether it be out of joy or frustration. it was one of the best memories I've ever had playing a local multi-player game, and I really hope I'll be able to have more like it in the future.
One of the reasons I loved Deadlock was that it allowed all your friends to install the demo from your disc, and then as long as the host had the full game everyone could enjoy a full-featured multiplayer game.
THANKS EC. All of my best memories of gaming are from local multiplayer and LAN parties.
Jr High (1995), an entire summer was dedicated to beating SNES Mech Warrior 2040 in which one player controlled the legs/movement while another player controlled the turret/guns. It was amazing how you had to grow accustom to the other player and work like a real team.
Example, when on ice the firing the guns would push you backwards while the legs had to move on a slippery surface and avoid holes/spikes. Great game to force kids to work TOGETHER.
Nice Osomatsu-san reference @ 1:06
Was that the god damn Osomatsus?
This couldn't have come out at a more perfect time. Right now, myself and two of my friends are developing a game that focuses on local co-op multiplayer, and I had been having doubts about it. But now, having watched this video and looking at our GDD and current ideas, it made me realise that we are indeed on the right track. Thanks so much!
1:07 Osomatsu reference.
I've always loved local multiplayer games. I mean, back in the 90s, we had fun sharing the keyboard with player 2.
I mean, let's not forget the face of your friend when you pull a smashing reversal out of nowhere or you're ruthlessly dominating them with no hope for escape.
+TheFrogger sometimes what I do is i have a secret weapon, I let my friend thing they've won, then BAM! I win and I get to hear their salt. Best part is, we joke about it later.
UNLESS MARIO PARTY.
Mario party will make you hate anyone.
mario party is monopoly in disguise
+Anaru LST Hahaha, we all know that Mario Party rage XD
+Christoffer113 I hate mario party 10.
This was a great video, James! As full of purpose and verve as your classic older episodes. I feel so bad for my best friend, who got an Xbox One only be so disappointed that there were no games he wanted to buy--almost none of them had local multiplayer, and that's all he wants to play when it comes to video games.
OMG this explanes so much! I have a gaming buddy, who is only about 3 year younger (i'm still under 30) and we've recently started to regularly play board games. After several months as we got more comfortable he started to express his tendency to rage, like you would rage in an online game. Of course I would get mad about same situations as he, but him loosing would put nearest drink glasses at mortal danger.
We are quite similar in personality, but the difference in how we grew up with games probably makes the difference. I don't know about him, but i had to endure my big brother, beating me most of the time, at local multiplay games where we were literally sitting in front of the same keyboard elbowing each others and complaining that "you are pushing too many buttons at once, my keys aren't working". That taught me not to rage when the cause of my rage is my brother right next to me.
this is why i love the wii u, a console that actually use the benefit from consoles actually have rather than pretendings it's a PC.
+TheGoldminor - I'll drink to that. _[raises bottle of Coke]_
Twentydragon cheers
***** Local isn't ideal for every game, even on the Wii U. The majority of Wii U games use local well, a concept lost on the other consoles of the current generation. For good local multi, check out _Nintendo Land_ and _Super Mario 3D World_.
I kinda find it funny that fighting games, a genre about totally beating the other player on one's own, can be the one that have the nicest players, meanwhile games like CSGO, DotA, LoL, and others which are based on teamwork, have players that are ready to call you noob at every corner even when they're teammates
+User5C13nc5
It actually makes sense when you think about it: when you get beaten in a 1v1 game you have no-one to blame but yourself, so you have to acknowledge the other player's skill. When you lose in a team game, inevitably everyone made some mistakes or didn't play perfectly, so it's easy to see the one or two big mistakes your teammates made that cost you the game, while remaining blind to your own shortcomings. This easily leads to a culture where people on the losing team get incredibly toxic toward each other because they all think they're the only blameless one and that they're "stuck in the trench" because of "noobs" or "feeders."
I've played HoN/DOTA2 for years and it's very, very rare that people act toxic towards the opposing team compared to people flaming their own teammates (it does happen, but the ratio is like, 50:1). In fighting games, you have no teammates, so it's easy to treat people with respect.
I miss local coop so much, I had so much fun playing games with my Dad when I was growing up or a few mates going round to each other's houses to play the latest game they picked up. Being able to run through Halo, Army of Two and hell, even freaking Gauntlet was so much fun in coop. And boy oh boy, the crazy 8 player LANs for Halo where you'd all organise to borrow a friend's TV and get everyone round in the spare room, cables everywhere, terrible food and drink and the horrible realisation of what time it is when you see the first person yawn or the sun creep in through the gap in the blinds.
Man, I miss those days so much.
Me and my room mates share one xbox 360, and the presence of Local Multiplayer is pretty much the MAIN thing we consider when buying a game.
The DLC peer pressure at my high school's gaming club is hilarious. The poor guy who has smash for wii U has to buy EVERYTHING.
I miss local multiplayer, especially since my internet connection isn't that great...
I mean, they should pitch half the price for the DLC or something
Still do LAN parties even when the game is internet only because it isn't the same over a mic
Me and my younger brother, Pedro, playing Viva Piñata! is one of the dearest memories in my life.
We didn't share much in terms of interests, unfortunatelly, but I will always remember what a laughing and adorable kid he was. So many wacky hours! :-D
great content as always, I look forward to these
I really hate when games with co-op modes don't have a local version. I feel like consoles are kinda built to be that thing you both play online with friends from school\worK(jk if you're an adult with a job, buy a pc scrublord), or with your siblings\family while sitting on the couch. Or even friends if they come over because you got the day 1 copy of halo and they did not.
+Missed Lethal Love your side note about the PC master race ;)
Real talk, local multiplayer is why I bought DLC for Smash4.
My friends kept bugging me about it
It's not just games with local play, some of my best gaming memories come from me and my friends taking turns playing the game and watching each other. We'd make jokes, talk about the story, we tried to guide the person playing while they were blind. And most importantly we shared the single experience in a wholly unique way. But in general friends together on a coach playing, is something I love
I'll second this, my friends and I have moved on to board games so that we can hang out in the same room and play together. It was a hard sell at first but a lot of really interesting stuff has been happening in tabletop games the last ten years.
1:05
Todomatsu, Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu and Jyushimatsu!
shove this video up 343 studios
omg the extra credits crew as kids were adorable.
The art in this one was specially great. Congrats to Scott!
The one reason why i bought call of duty black ops 3 is because it is the only next gen cod that has 4 player split screen. Say what you want about call of duty, but playing gun game or team deathmatch with my best friends is some of the most fun I have ever had on my console. If only the new Doom game had split screen.
I hate how many AAA games have local multiplayer only on console and they remove it on pc...
Its so frustrating when i want to play something with my brother and there's no way to do it...
+Armando no shit, I wanted to play some Borderlands 2 with my GF and found out it only does local coop on consoles!
+Omnis Imperator borderlands 2 only does local co-op on consoles? Are you sure you have that right, because last year, me and my fiance played Borderlands 2 when she was in Mexico. That was not local by any means
Local multiplayer is just kinda weird on a PC. Depends on the game I guess. Nidhogg has excellent local multiplayer, and that's on Steam.
+Focie wait. i think I misunderstood. I think I got it
pureblackeagle Yeah I agree that it is weird usually. I only do it in big picture mode these days. Focie Sorry I could have worded that better lol
This was an awesome, very heartfelt video! I'd like this twice if I could!
"You played face to face, today this isn't the case" I'm going to use this quote more often.
I miss the lan play on PC. Some games are great for lan parties, and lack of that option in modern games makes me mad.
+Kwad_rat I'm too young to know what a LAN party is
+Dusty Burkybile Its nothing old just look it up :)
+Dusty Burkybile they are still in games, but if you don't know it when you jave multiple computers connected in some way to play a game. for example in minecraft if you have a friend over you can create a LAN world to play on with one another as the game can't be played on one screen
I remember playing W40K: Dawn of War on lan, because when we rented a flat with no internet (and there was no way to get it in there) so, all guys who lived there, played it using some long ass ethernet cable and some wifi on laptops. This was two-storey apartment in the attic and the cable run from one floor to another (and was a little short so it was stretched in midair across the hallway). Also it was a time when we still played Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. Today lanplay is not so common in most of games and this was a great way to play shooters and RTS.
+Kwad_rat I can't really think of the last game i played that had online-multiplayer but didn't allow for lan connections. Although i also don't really see why you can't just gather in a lan-party and then play online.
1:09 yooo, Osomatsu-san reference
Love this episode!
I recently got the chance to go to a local Hearthstone Tavern Hero tournament, and let me tell you I am a new NEW Hearthstone player, haven't been playing for more than a month and the guys I was playing against had been playing since the release and almost achieved Legendary in ranked play, but even when I lost there was no bitterness or anger that I usually feel when playing someone clearly leagues better than me online. They were friendly and understanding and gave me pointers and we talked about our time on WoW and heck I even beat them once (cause of a mis-play but still!), I even walked away with the fireside card back and it was just one of the best video game experiences I have had since Sonic Boom 2012. Local multiplayer really does bring you together, and I urge people who are interested to join or heck even host something like this, the joys of sharing your love of games has a feeling unparalleled by anything else.
I'm embarrassed in online multiplay when I suck. And I suck most of times. I wish I could play the same games with my family and friends. They don't mind that I suck. They suck too. Those who suck together have fun together.
The perfect example for this?
Keep talking and nobody explodes. If it was online, the experts and the defusers would flame everytime someone failed.
Make it local, and they will all laugh instead.
+Supaserrin Thing is, that game can also be played online if you just get your online pal to find the manual and be the bomb expert.
Key difference is that you know that person, ofc.
+Supaserrin Well, I actually play Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes over the internet way more than in person.
I play it with friends of mine over skype, and I think that an entire discussion can be made about games that feel very similar to local multiplayer even though they aren't. I don't think it was intentional, but playing over skype means the restriction on what you can see is natural. It's kind of the perfect game for that.
Dude this video was hilarious! I loved the facial expressions.
We lose the personal interaction that we rarely get when playing on the web. I personally think that local multiplayer is the best way to play. Actually knowing who is playing with you creates and possibly breaks bonds. And that's what humans are for. If we had no interaction, we could never make friends, know more about our world, even get rid of grudges over a game of Munchkin. I feel that playing with a brother, friend, cousin, uncle or even a random stranger is the best way to strengthen bonds and, over all, lets us feel even more human.
Yeah, you just can't beat local MP. It was so good that, as kids in the 90's, we'd gladly sacrifice half of our 15inch TV's in order to play split screen MP with a friend, and we'd sacrifice even more screen space when playing with 2 or more other people! Haha, good times. Online MP just isn't the same.
Shots fired to Halo 5.
Agreed. Some of my best memories involve playing splitscreen, on a LAN, or just passing around the controller between friends and family. While I was recovering from my accident, my little brother introduced me to tons of new games via splitscreen and it's how I introduced my friends to Halo.
THANK YOU!
My Best friend and I have started lugging over our consols to one another's houses simply to play in the same room even though we are playing single player games like Fallout. Some of my favorite memories back in highschool were the caffeine induced all nighters with my closest mates playing left for dead and halo.
Well thanks now I miss dem Wii days
+David van Scheppingen Wii? How old are you, that was not even 5 years ago...
This is what pissed me off about Splatoon. Here you have Nintendo, a company well known for continuing to push the "play with friends and family" angle over "playing with random assholes online", and they left out local multiplayer for no good reason.
Incidentally, you know who continued including local multiplayer on console games after everyone else had stopped? Valve, a company that's not even known for their console games. They understood their audience better than people who had been catering to that audience for years.
+stevethepocket Splatoon did have a local multiplayer mode, I played it with my friend when the game launched. It wasn't really ideal, but then again, a game like that where the gamepad is the focus, as is the 'teams larger than 1' aspect, isn't really ideal for the concept either.
+Sato "the gamepad is the focus" is the central problem with pretty much everything wrong with the WiiU, frankly.
stevethepocket
Can't say I really agree. I'm glad they're trying new things, making unique experiences that are only possible on that console, otherwise why not just have a PC? Although I do agree that a game like Splatoon, being the *only* first party shooter game, should have embraced traditional controls a *little* more.
+stevethepocket Splatoon is an online arena shooter through and through. The fact that they actually bothered to include any form of local multiplayer is something I doubt any company except for Nintendo would've done.
Just like Dan says in this video, though, most games probably aren't meant for local multiplayer.
wow totally agree. My group of friends and I love playing together you know, like real people, and that expediente is just great.
I wish this video was posted in every game forum on the Internet. Truer words...
Get a Nintendo Switch and get ready to Share The Joy(TM).
I have passed on games because they don't have local multiplayer. Racing games, specifically. Being able to play alongside my racing-enthusiast buddies is a big thing for me. So every time I see a Need For Speed or some other game neglect this feature, I just won't bother with it. It's just going to lead to some awkwardness when I have them over and have to explain that we can't sit on the couch and play it together.
Same. Of course, I don't buy NfS because the customization since Underground 2 just feels less fun. Yeah, much of the game was making your car look like a ridiculous tuner, but that was fun
Didn't know a racing game without local multiplayer could make it past development.
I can tell you the greatest moments I've had are when I was playing SSB4 with 6 people in the same room. It never gets better than finally destroying your buddy with one final Back Slash, then being able to relive that for the next day and talk about it.
0:45 Lol!!! I love how hilarious you guys make angry people look!!!
